“perhaps because the recent fast (in the case of Tu B’Av) ‘
By the 6th day after the fast, it is not so recent.
When the temple stood, the 9th of Av was not a fast day.
There are many sources besides “Tu B’Av” that show that the stringencies of modern day Chassidus were not the norm throughout the vast majority of our history.
Chassidus is not for everyone, and non-Chassidic paths of keeping Torah and Mitzvos must be available to any child who does not connect to Chassidus.

The Kitzur is known to very stringent in such matters.
Please bring a more middle of the road source.

They also treat earning too much money as a crime.
On the other hand, some mean spirited cities and states try to criminalize the poor with draconian fines.
November 10, 2010 3:04 pm at 3:04 pm in reply to: Dose of reality: Kids kicked out of school #709006Josh31ParticipantThe reality is that we the Jewish people were assigned Israel, in the middle of civilization, and not Tibet to develop as a nation.
Hence, total insularity is not an option.
Josh31ParticipantEngineering and accounting lead to decent jobs with just a Bachelor’s degree.
Having a degree in a field with strong demand gives you a lot of leverage when Shabbos / Yom Tov issues come up.

“I dont have any solution and if you have one please provide it.”
Based upon this, even the most insulated communities in Yerushalayim and Bnei Brak are lost causes, unless you close them off and make everyone pass thru a metal detector to enter.
Only solution:
Set up a frum community at the base of the highest mountains of the world.
Josh31ParticipantI missed several.
Just look at the “Couples Having Shabbos Guests” thread!!!

November 10, 2010 2:03 am at 2:03 am in reply to: Dressing More Professionally at work(schools) #708470Josh31ParticipantA few weeks ago we had complaints about hats, now snoods.
Someone must be heavily invested in the Shaitel business.
However, if you are married and before a judge as a Tax Certiorari trying to get a property assesed at $300 Million down to $270 Million then nothing less than a $3000 Shaitel will do. Think Sacrilege in a few years IY”H!!!
Josh31ParticipantThe essential pre-requisite for any discussion of the ideal of women being at home is a large supply of frum men ready and able to fully support their families from the wedding day on.
The harsh reality for frum women now is that they must get as strong an education (parnasah related) as possible in order to survive with any dignity.
November 7, 2010 5:26 am at 5:26 am in reply to: Dressing More Professionally at work(schools) #708437Josh31ParticipantBased upon what preschool teachers are paid snoods may be all they can afford.
Josh31ParticipantSometimes kids get kicked out because they could not keep up with the recent rapid shift to the right and greater insularity.
Josh31ParticipantWe are a nation of shared national experiences starting with the Exodus, not based upon a single prophet or philosopher. I am sure that shortly after the Exodus and the Giving of the Torah someone could have written a brilliant work showing how everything that happened was the work of the “Dark Side”.
Josh31ParticipantYou graduate from a good law school $120K in debt and if you are a good student you will be offered jobs that pay $40 per hour that they expect you to work. However, only jobs expecting either 1000 hours or 4000 hours of solid work per year will be offered.

Who is HaRav HaMachshir on this balony???
The Republicans also believe in uplifting the poor; but not with draconian taxes that will:
a) drive hundreds of billions in capital out of the country;
b) create massive tax avoidance (legal) and evasion (illegal);
and c) really slow down the economy.
Josh31ParticipantStill winning the American League Championship with a team with a $54 Million payroll is a much bigger accomplishment than not winning it with a $206 Million payroll!!!

Josh31Participant20 hours to chicken soup!!!
Knowing there is chicken soup Friday evening helps energize the last 3 work days of the work week.
Josh31ParticipantFabie’s OP on this thread shows that learning can not be done in a vacuum.
If your learning is being done when you you have obligations to your wife and / or daughters and / or sons; and by learning you default on these obligations; you have not fulfilled the Mitzvah of learning.
Josh31ParticipantI doubt kashrus certifying agencies review the packaging writing and pictures at all. They probably just give permission to use their trademark based upon the food content. This time of the year there are candies with both pictures of goblins and reliable kashrus marks.
Josh31ParticipantThe term “Ben Torah” implies such a high level of service to G-d and piety, that it should not be used to praise the living.
Josh31Participant44 hours to chicken soup!!!

But shuls need to accommodate outsiders.
In New York, that means a good inventory of jackets in all sizes.
In this Southwestern city there has to be a good selection of Hawaiian shirts.
Josh31Participant8-0: The Rangers will be closing this thread soon.
Josh31ParticipantWrong, Friday night was a fluke and Saturday was merely the better team winning.
Josh31Participant“Josh, we want freedom to operate within our religion.”
What did I write that made you think I was limiting freedoms?
Only item I wrote about was my fear of animal rights zealots.
What does marriage have to do with shechita and meat. The only possibility is that the government starts recognizing marriages involving animals. Fortunately that is not on the agenda of either party.
Josh31Participant“Judaism is sensitive to animal rights too.”
Do you want the government enforcing animal rights with the same zeal as human rights?
The Torah standard is not to cause animals unneeded pain, we are allowed to kill them when needed. The term animal welfare is more appropriate.
Josh31Participant6 of the 7 scheduled World Series games will be during Night Seder!!!
Josh31Participant“sympathetic to causes like shechita”
The problems come from those who are too sympathetic to animal rights.
Josh31ParticipantCivil Rights Act of 1964 was very much a true bipartisan achievement.
Both parties have changed drastically in the past 50 years.
Still in 2010 being a blatant racist of any type will get you kicked out of both parties.
In 2010 anti Israel and anti Jew sentiment has found a home in the far left.
Josh31Participant“but Leket, Peah, Shich’chah, and Maaser Oni — to remind prospective converts that the world belongs to HaShem, not to us.”
None of these 4 gifts go through the hands of any bureaucrat.
It is an interesting question why prospective converts are informed about these Mitzvot when they do not get a portion in the land to farm.
Perhaps it is to assure them that they will not starve if they convert?
The “talk” given to would be converts contains warnings of negative consequences, but also also positive consequences.
This belongs on another thread…
Josh31ParticipantA long post season for the Yankees will cause a lot of Bitul Torah. The Texas Rangers will be shutting down this Bitul Torah quickly.
October 13, 2010 1:30 am at 1:30 am in reply to: Why do some wives (newlyweds) act like Mashgichim to their husbands? #701919Josh31ParticipantFor some of the more right wing male posters here I am actually hoping they find real rich Shidduchin with a father in law guaranteeing support for 10 years such that neither the Kollel guy nor his wife need to work. This way each right wing poster can have his full time personal Mashgiach for 10 years!!!
October 13, 2010 12:52 am at 12:52 am in reply to: Why do some wives (newlyweds) act like Mashgichim to their husbands? #701917Josh31ParticipantIn some cases I suspect the new wife is holding him to the same standards of Hasmodah (diligence in learning) and zeal in Avodas HaShem that he was “marketed” to have.
In other cases he is being held to the same standards of perfection that she and her high school classmates were held to.
