“The Rebbe said to shave my head.”
Did your husband hear this?
If so, what was his reaction?
Shaving, or even cutting your hair short may be disrespecting him and his Roshei Yeshivos.
May 30, 2011 5:19 pm at 5:19 pm in reply to: Were not Chassidish at all, but we go to Rebbes for Brachos #773186Josh31ParticipantFor those married the advice also has to be compatible with your spouse.
May 30, 2011 2:30 pm at 2:30 pm in reply to: Were not Chassidish at all, but we go to Rebbes for Brachos #773182Josh31ParticipantWhen a Bracha (blessing) is needed, going to a Torah leader whose overall approach you are most comfortable with is appropriate.
Expect a Bracha to be accompanied with advise and the advise has to be compatible with Halacha (Torah law) and you.
Josh31ParticipantFor girls I can see one desire driving many of them OTD. It is the desire to always be able to grow their hair long and not have to shave it every month like a Nazir and Metzorah (for Nazir / Metzorah – a one shot shaving).
Perhaps I am in error, and no woman is ever forced to shave her head to be part of a community???
For those who can not fit in one community, are all attempts made to find them a “home” in another shomer Torah and Mitzvos community???
Josh31Participantshlishi, you are pushing Fire and Brimstone Judaism, not darchei noam. Your attitude and the sarcastic attitude of Daas Yochid is what turns people off.
Fortunately, there are plenty of parents and teachers who do not share this attitude, and thanks to them Torah Judaism will survive.
Josh31Participantpopa_bar_abba:
Girls are driven to become very career oriented.
During the 80 hour workweeks to make Law Partner the role as a Jewish wife / mother is lost.
Josh31Participantcanine: You are also correct.
Example that comes to mind:
The obligation of a husband to support his family
Josh31ParticipantThose who are smarter than Shlomo Hamelech who said “Hanoch le-naar al pi darco” are a big cause of boys going in improper ways.
Most boys are not future Roshei Yeshivos.
If the wrong boy is pushed in the “Rosh Yeshiva” path, he will drag the “Crown of Torah” through the mud in a public thoroughfare.
Others will be pushed away by a teacher who misrepresents a Chassidic Minhag as a a major Biblical law.
May 22, 2011 4:20 am at 4:20 am in reply to: Why don't jews have dogs? It is clear in the gemara and shulchan aruch that #770371Josh31ParticipantSheep herding uses dogs. When we get back to bringing the Pesach offering we will need sheep and in turn some dogs.
Josh31ParticipantI have strong doubts that the fine Egyptian linen of 2000 years ago was created with any less improper intentions than modern denim. However, it was used by the Kohain Gadol on Yom Kippur.
We can not ban a material from being used to create clothing that are now associated with modest orthodox Jewish women.
Josh31Participant“were invented for farmers”
If you were awake last Shabbos during the reading of the Torah, then you would not look down on farming.
To Kshmo Kein Hu: Tight jean pants and long jean skirts are worlds apart.
Josh31ParticipantA woman wearing a long jean skirt communicates that she believes in a) traditional modesty, b) that G-d is involved in the destiny of the Jewish people and C) the unity of the Jewish people.
Josh31ParticipantThe real problem with jean skirts is that it makes you look like a ZIONIST.
On the other topic IBM loosened up its dress code in 1994. Since then the company has done quite well. I am an engineer and if another one looks like a BANKER he loses credibility with me.
Josh31Participant“don’t argue with success”
One offshoot from Judaism has 2.1 billion followers.
Josh31ParticipantPunishment has to fit the crime.
Instead it appears to fit the power structure.
There are far worse things adults in communities do, and are punished far less.
Josh31ParticipantFamily simchos are another story.
There kids that grow up having been told that school is too important to miss when a family simcha occurs will ignore family in favor of their profession.
Josh31ParticipantA decision to expel is a very serious decision. Unless the expelled student is immediately transferred to another orthodox Jewish school, the student is being pushed “with both hands” out of the Torah community. This can only be justified if the student’s continued presence in the school will destroy others spiritually. At least in one case where a girl had to be expelled, one of the administrators did indeed fast the rest of of the day. This is similar to the fasting Beis Din would do when they had to sentence someone to death.
Josh31ParticipantIf indeed this is the policy of the school to expel boys for talking to girls, I ask that the school inform every potential donor of this before accepting any monies.
May 8, 2011 5:56 pm at 5:56 pm in reply to: Is Osama Bin Laden Dead or Alive in America's Custody #764931Josh31ParticipantObama was born on Krypton, Osama is alive and 42 years ago we had the first moon landing simulation.
Josh31ParticipantBig Levayah in the Netherworld!!!
Josh31ParticipantThe Treason Act has nothing to do with morality and everything to do with damaging the “Malchus” or Kingship.
Josh31Participant“Diana should be executed and Charles is off free…”
No matter what Charles did, the legitimacy of William would not be affected.
Legitimacy of a future Head of State is a big issue.
Here we have the whole “birther” movement, and Obama had to release his full birth certificate to try to quell them.
Our own King David had to deal with legitimacy issues because of Ruth and Moab. (Moavi v’lo moavit)
Josh31Participant“generally accepted that techeiles will not return until Moshiach comes”
Please provide sources for this.
Josh31ParticipantNo Apikorsus has ever been taught in the Electoral College.
It is remarkably free of Pritzus.
There are no coed dorms.
Josh31ParticipantYou tell him or her that your count is wrong, you are only 99 and should have many more years.
March 22, 2011 1:50 am at 1:50 am in reply to: I think of death a lot. Do you? why is it so ignored? #751052Josh31ParticipantDeath is not a central theme in Judaism. In ancient Egypt it was.
Egyptian priests mainly ministered to the dead.
Jewish Cohanim were prohibited to have contact with the dead. None of the Korbanos (temple sacrifices) were offered on behalf of the dead.
Kadish is not a prayer for the dead, but an obligation for the sons to “step up to the plate” and sanctify G-d in THIS world.
Too much thinking about death is not healthy and a psychologist should be consulted.
Josh31Participant“???’ ??? ????? ???? “
Modern day practical approach would be for a friend to quietly loan him an extra Lexus he has on hand.
Josh31ParticipantHere in Texas the expression is All Hat No Cattle!!!
Josh31ParticipantOur Governor Rick Perry:
He has kept Texas business friendly and prosperous, encouraged doctors to see Medicare patients thru malpractice reform and welcomed the evacuees from Katrina.
Josh31ParticipantClothing are worn to send a message.
Three generations ago we wore hats and jackets to show that we were of those:
“in accordance with the practice of Jewish husbands, who work for their wives, honor, provide for and support them in truth.”
In three days from now we will dress to show that we are of those who do not work on but honor the Shabbos.
Josh31ParticipantThe compensation components that public employee unions negotiate for are not ones that energize workers. They are tenure after only 3 years, defined benefit pensions and salary advancements based strictly on seniority. Such compensation elements are rarely found nowadays in the private sector, because they do not drive improved productivity.
On the other hand, raises based upon merit, cash bonuses and defined contribution retirement plans do energize workers and are prevalent in the private sector.
Josh31ParticipantWith everyone having cell phones which display the time, watches are now getting to be used only on Shabbos or Yom Tov.
Josh31ParticipantI would like to believe a male; but on the internet anything is possible.
A poster here could be a product of Artificial Intelligence, which would really reflect the collective will of several computer science students!!!
Best would be for poster to switch to “Chayav Adam Lirat” after Purim in the spirit of the next holiday which also involves wine…
Josh31ParticipantWhat’s unusual about Yosi?
I had a roommate named Yosi when I was in Yeshiva.
As long as it is not a Coffee Room “Joseph” or “mosherose”.
Josh31ParticipantWas the Starbucks on a street corner?
If yes, then sitting their for 10 and a half hours will qualify you as the “yoshvei keranos” (those who sit at street corners as opposed to the Beit Medrash) mentioned at every Siyum.
To avoid this designation go to a Starbucks that is not at a street corner, or stand up at least once every 18 minutes.
This year I get to do Purim Torah for 2 months!!!
Josh31ParticipantFor me add “certainly not Joseph”.
Josh31ParticipantFortunately we do not Paskin like the one who says Maneh is $100 and Manos the plural is at least $200. Some even say the two hundred is the same as in the Ketubah!!!
Josh31Participant“I always said starbucks was a bunch of”
Degrading people created BeTzelem Elokim is worse than eating non Kosher.
Josh31ParticipantMy best understanding is that public hazards should be removed on Shabbos as long as a real biblical violation of one of the 39 categories does not occur.
Problem with shoveling snow is that it is a hazardous activity for many. The Weather Service in Chicago warned that in a previous snowstorm tens of people died from heart attacks shoveling snow.
Josh31Participant“i figured all men know how to park”
I am a man, and that assumption is wrong.
I live in a city where parking skills are not as critical.
A strong possibility is that he did not want to damage two cars.
Josh31ParticipantIf you stick enough people in a limo, you end up with a glorified BUS!!!
Josh31Participant“The split is 13-12; effectively even.”
If tonight’s football game (lehavdil) ends 13-12 it will be declared a tie…
Josh31ParticipantEvery religion has its “Torah”, we had first the Exodus and Har Sinai experiences and then the Torah that Moshe brought down to us.
Tefilin have to written in order. First the Exodus and then acceptance of G-d’s sovereignty.
Josh31ParticipantThey are two separate windows to knowledge.
Torah is a shared national experience (Exodus and Har Sinai) and can not be reproduced in the lab.
Science is what can be observed and / or reproduced in the lab.
Josh31ParticipantI thought this was about a whole separate underground frum public transportation system!!!
But this requires billions of dollars. The amount of money involved can be used to guarantee that every teacher of Torah in the US is paid $2000 a week and on time. If that happened we would have less Josephs’ in this coffee room.
Josh31ParticipantThe Green Bay Cheesehead seems appropriate for this, although cheese has more to do with Chanukah!!!
February 2, 2011 4:49 am at 4:49 am in reply to: Are you going to watch/listen to the superbowl? #735637Josh31Participant“Some delicious gastronomical delights”
That has to include cheese(heads)!!!
Josh31ParticipantThunderstorm
Heavy Snow
Small Hail/Snow Pellets
Blowing Snow
Freezing Fog
and Windy
WOW!!!
Josh31Participant“Baba Miseh”
Too spooky for me.
Is this the Harry Potter series?
Josh31ParticipantWrite about the blizzard!!!!
