cantoresq, The Torah runs without cash. I have no idea (nor care) what you mean by that, but can assure you our Yeshivos and Talmedei Chachomim have thrived in poverty more so than in wealth.

And here is a modern orthodox perspective on intermarriage:

In a lecture at Yeshiva University in 1988, Rav Aharon Lichtenstein unequivocally stated his opposition to retaining ties with a family member who has intermarried. He explained that a Jew who has chosen to intermarry has “crossed a Rubicon” and has turned his back on the Jewish people, whose survival depends on Jews marrying Jews and raising Jewish children who will continue the heritage of our ancestors.

Rav Yechiel Yaakov Weinberg (Teshuvot Seridei Eish 2:6 in the original edition) says that one who has married a non-Jewish woman, whom we certainly according to Halacha are obligated to excommunicate to discourage such behavior, has the status of one who has been excommunicated.

rabbiofberlin – There are many hundreds of thousands in Eretz Yisroel itself who are anti-zionists (despite your silly redefinition of making anyone who livesthere into a zionist), aside from the hundreds of thousands in chutz l’aaretz. In fact a majority of Torah Jewry is clearly opposed to zionism.

Mayan_Dvash, Some people here don’t like hearing about what the Gemorah says, as they say it is 1,500 years old. Unbelievable, but true.

    Pashuteh Yid –

I was responding to a incorrect factual point made by yossiea, so please try not to lease any sleep over it.

Zionism has ALREADY ended up on the wrong side of history. History has ALREADY proven the Gedolim correct.

And why don’t you take your apikorsus elsewhere? No one is burning Rambam, but you are trying (unsuccesfully) to (C’V) burn the Torah itself.

cherrybim, Yes, I in fact do. And yes, I in fact ask.

Now please don’t skirt the issue and address the Gemorah and Rambam I quoted. (Which goes hand-in-hand from what I’ve been told by a Rav on this type of situation. And with what the Rabbonim over the centuries [including contemporary] have instituted.)

This is at least the second time you defended your argument claiming you were personally at hand at a “godol hador” who you can’t identify that coincidentally backed up your position. Unlike last time, this time you say it was a godol hador ben godol hador. Who will it be (an unnamed godol hador ben godol hador ben godol hador?) the next time your argument fails on the halachic merits?

cantoresq, That wasn’t my implication. Who am I to make such a determination? I suggested that who are we to determine so and so does belong at the table, or does not. So who are either of us to say Rabbi so-and-so deserves a place at the table? Its neither of our perogitives.

Now this point having been made, let me proceed. You ask to name a single non-chareidi (which I take you to mean MO) godol. Who said that there is one? (I am not saying yea or nay.) You have declared yourself unable to define what a godol even is.

cantoresq: “The proof of that is that he is not even allowed “in the room” much less given a seat “at the table” when the chareidi “greats” convene to dsicuss issues of communal importance.”

And who is to say that any particular Rabbi is so entitled to a seat at the table with the greats?

cantoresq, I think you are convoluting respect and acceptance. Rav Schachter is respected by Chareidim (I’m not referring to every yodle who finds it necessary to give his two cents in a forum, but rather the Rabbinical establishment.) But his psak and opinions are not necessarily accepted.

When you say that “the left wing of Orthodoxy, is generally far more respectful of the right wing” you are actually alluding to acceptance more so than respect. Just on a basic level, what is there not to accept if someone is more stringent? (You can’t fault the next guy for having stringencies you don’t.) The reverse cannot necessarily be said. And indeed the left wing seeks advice from the Gedolim (who are on the right.)

    milchig,

Trust me, I don’t need a response. It is the heilige Yidden from Williamsburg, whom you maliciously defamed in comment #10 here http://www.theyeshivaworld.com/article.php?p=23426 who you need to apologize to. Calling them cheats and perverts, as you referred to “many” of them is an outrage and defamation of character against a whole community of Jews. And anyone who hears that false allegation leveled against another Yid, and fails to respond to such loshon hora, rechilus, and motzi shem ra becomes as guilty as the one who mouthed that sheker. Its still a week before Rosh Hashonah.

Or are the Jews in Williamsburg excluded from your call?

As far as sitting shiva for a Jew who married a goy, there may be a difference if its a Jewish woman C’V marrying a gentile man, or a Jewish man C’V marrying a gentile woman (which seems is worse.)

Here is some information I located regarding intermarriage:

The Mishnah says [Sanhedrin 81b] that the punishment for a Jewish man who has relations with a gentile woman is that zealots can kill the man. Rambam adds [Hilchos Malachim 9:7] that any gentile woman who purposely has relations with a Jewish man should be put to death. In addition to the punishment that a zealot can do to a man who has relations with a non-Jewess, a man who has relations with such a woman is subject to flogging from Beis Din because there are four different prohibitions upon such a woman. If the conditions are not able to meet the criteria needed for such a sinner to be flogged, the sinner would be punished by HaShem Himself with kares as it says [Malachi 2:11] [one who worships] .

The prohibition of intermarriage is so stringent that the Gemora equates intermarriage with idolatry [Sanhedrin 82a]

the relative who married the goy, is rather what I intended to type. (The goy him/herself you certainly have no relationship with.)

Marrying a non-Jew is one of the most cardinal sins a Jew can commit.

SJS: “…or non-Jews marrying into their family.”

If a non-Jew CHAS V’SHALOM marrier into your family, you immediately break off the relationship with the relative who married into the family. (Offhand, I forget if you sit shiva for him as well.)

    lesschumras,

Aside from your very screen name being an outright denegration to all those Yidden who fold dear and follow the chumras Chazal and our Chachomim have instituted over the years, you frequently mock Chareidim and insinuate false imputations on a regular basis.

I will not dignify it by providing any examples, but anyone who looks at the threads you have attacked Rabbonim and the like, immediately sees your demagoguery.

cantoresq, To address your main point, it is necessary to break it into its two components. I agree with you it is wrong to denigrate any proper Rabbi. But as far as “refusing to recognize the greatness”, I’ll have to disagree with you. You can’t, to take R. Goren as an example again, impose on us to accept “the greatness” of someone like that. (We had a long conversation about him a number of months ago.)

cantoresq, are you implying that you consider R. Shlomo Goren (to pick one from your list) to be some sort of godol?

Please define your definition of Godol.

I noticed lately that every sub-group feels left out unless they take the top 10% of their Rabbis and declare them to be “gedolim.” Otherwise how could they compete with the universally acknowledged Gedolim, who happen to be from outside their hashkofos?

It is similar to how now the Reform/Conservative have co-opted various terms, and have their own “Rosh Yeshivas”, and the like. Its obvious they feel less Jewish unless they too can have it.

less, the response was appropriate for the vitriol expressed by the clown.

Incidentally, the Ran we are discussing is famous for holding that Dina Dmalchusa Dina is inapplicable in Eretz Yisroel. This teitch is not in dispute by anyone.

In fact, taxation is the primary component of Dina Dmalchusa. And the fact that a Jew is not obligated to pay taxes in Eretz Yisroel, clearly demonstrates Dina Dmalchusa is not binding in Eretz Yisroel.

This is aside from a whole host of other reasons that Jews are not bound to the laws of the illegitimate zionist regime in the holy land. (Without getting into the contentious specifics, i.e. the 3 shvuos, etc.)

Incidentally, the way I teitched it is how Rabbi Herschel Schachter teitched it. You can say omg again.
