mewho, you are probably thinking of Daiya cheese.

in reply to: The long awaited Bais Hamikdosh #3! #964469

Well, neither would we! Any technology that our enemies could have used against us is technology that we also could have used to defend ourselves and fight back.

Sam2, my husband has a close friend who is very frum and has an attraction to both genders that is making him miserable. He wants his homosexual attraction to just go away, but so far he has been unsuccessful. He is in his late twenties and refuses shidduchim, because he doesn’t think it is fair to any woman for him to marry her and still have these thoughts about men. It has driven him into a deep depression such that it is even difficult for him to hold down a job. He hates himself. I so wish there was something we could do for him.

in reply to: Major Spelling Mistake #983073

I have also seen many people misspell “definitely” as “definatly” or even “defiantly” (notice that the latter will not get picked up by a spell-checker because it is actually a different word).

in reply to: What are they thinking? #964845

“To my knowledge, many Conservative synagogues will still go through the entire sedrah in the course of a week; they just break it up differently (so that a little is being done at Shabbat Shacharit, a little at Mincha, and a little on Monday and Thursday).”

I have never heard of such a system. Even my mother’s Conservative shul, whose rabbi is extremely knowledgeable and considered “right-wing” Conservative, does not have enough members who can lein in order to cover the full sedrah. As it is, they can barely scrape together the triennial leining. Kal v’chomer the less traditional Conservative shuls certainly can’t do it.

“Jf2 it is a great word used to mean ignorance. I agree about the spelling”

It is used to mean ignorance. Unfortunately, those who use it display their own ignorance, since it is completely made up & you won’t find it in any dictionary.

“we had a few customers who clearly were not jewish, one wearing a burka (the thing that only lets you see their eyes is a nikab)”

I think you mean a hijab.

in reply to: My steering wheel is BURNING my hands! #964990

I bought a leopard print steering wheel cover at a yard sale for $1 and it even came with a matching cell phone case. Of course my brother refuses to drive with it because he thinks it’s “too girly”. I’ll take leopard print anytime for $1 when the alternative is buying a fancy one from the car dealership that will cost you upwards of $20.

in reply to: US Supreme Court recent rulings #965252

“The problem for gay rights activists is that, when searching for a biological basis, the only ‘acceptable’ options are genetic or epigenetic as neurological or developmental origins would then catagorise homosexuality as either a condition or a disorder (note that these do not necessarily imply disease or illness, just deviation from ‘standard set-up’) whereas the activists need to portray homosexuality as simply another variant of the standard human set-up. Simply speaking, a neurological condition would mean that the brain functions differently to the basic programmed settings for all humanity. If we admit such, it means also admitting that heterosexuality is the default mode of human orientation and that homosexuality is, in some way, an aberration. This is something no self-respecting activist is willing to do.”

Well, fortunately, I am not a gay rights activist and I have no qualms about saying that I believe that homosexuality IS in fact a disorder. Heterosexuality is the “default”, or “norm”, or whatever you want to call it, and some people unfortunately have to live with being born gay. Whether it is neurological or developmental, I don’t know, but it is not a lifestyle choice any more than a cleft palate, for instance, is a lifestyle choice. It is a disorder. Furthermore, it is a disorder with no known cure. Frum homosexuals who control their sexual appetites and live alone or married to lesbians are true tzaddikim.

in reply to: If someone said that they'd give you a car… #1105532

My husband and I have very different taste in cars. Although there are a few we agree on, we’ve decided that when the time comes that we really need a car on a regular basis, we’ll lease and trade off choosing the model every three years.

I really like “boxy” shaped cars: Scion XB, Nissan Cube, and Honda Element. I also like pickup trucks (haven’t done enough research on those yet, but so far I like Chevy Silverado) and some Volvos (again, haven’t done enough research) and the Chevy Volt.

My husband doesn’t like the look of the boxy cars. He also prefers sedans, while I prefer crossovers or SUVs (I’ll probably win on this point once we start having children, iy”H). He likes small, fuel-efficient cars: Toyota Prius, smart car, and MINI Cooper.

At the July 4 event we went to last week, a local dealership showed up with three display cars (Infiniti) and raffled off a weekend rental. We didn’t win, but we did have a long conversation with a salesman and he showed us the car’s features. Infiniti is beyond our price range right now (and we’re also not in the market for another 9-12 months), but we both liked it and plan to test drive it at some point.

You are probably looking for something like “amaratzus”. But I have news for you: it’s not a real word. “Am ha’aretz” in the singular makes sense. If you want to pluralize it, it should be “amei ha’aretz”, not the popular and incorrect “amaratzim”. “Amaratzus” as a noun form is just silly. Think about it. What would the literal translation of that be?

in reply to: US Supreme Court recent rulings #965249

“So when s/o starts becoming like this at 40 -where were they all these years? Late bloomers – huh?”

There is no such thing as “becoming like this” at age 40. Most gay people will tell you that they always “knew” they were gay from the age of five, or twelve, or fifteen or whatever, but that they tried to suppress it. And let’s face it, who wouldn’t try to suppress it? Who would want to have a homosexual attraction? Those who “come out of the closet” at age 40 have been hiding in it for decades.

Isn’t there already a thread on a similar subject?

Making havdalah shabbos morning? I have never heard of such a thing in a Conservative shul. Wow. That is even more nuts than their “triennial” service.

in reply to: What pet would you want? #964277

    1) There are many different valid ways of exercising. Walking a dog is one of them, and if you had ever owned a dog you would know that they don’t need to do their business every 10 minutes.

    2) A properly trained dog will not make a mess in your house. If you’re worried about shedding, get a short-haired dog and keep it properly groomed.

    3) Feminism is not the same as egalitarianism. Feminist theory does not, as is popularly and mistakenly believed, advocate that women are the SAME as men. I believe in Jewish values of gender roles, but that does not mean that I cannot also be a feminist.

in reply to: Stupid ASPCA commercials #1040089

Right, that’s why I said to make sure you are getting a pet that is ALREADY neutered.

in reply to: Stupid ASPCA commercials #1040078

Curiosity, you are not making any sense. I literally just read your post three times and have no idea what you are trying to say.

in reply to: What pet would you want? #964275

Nope, not an oxymoron and you haven’t convinced me. Walking and playing with the dog is much-needed exercise, disciplining your children is good parenting (if they weren’t “torturing” the dog they’d get into some other mischief and you’d have to discipline them anyway), and cleaning up after it is part of our achrayus to take care of the environment.

in reply to: Stupid ASPCA commercials #1040074

Agreed. But the other extreme of “extinct” is overpopulation, which creates a glut of animals who wander around starving and diseased in acute distress. They (as a whole) are in this state because we (as a whole) think they’re pretty and cuddly and breed them for pets. Therefore we have an achrayus to control their population numbers so as to eradicate the suffering that we caused.

A friend once said to me, regarding overpopulated deer that the city had tagged for observation, “they’d be doing them a greater kindness to just put a bullet through their heads”. That was hard for me to hear, but I have to admit that he was probably right.

in reply to: Stupid ASPCA commercials #1040071

I think we are in agreement, and arguing over semantics.

Individual animals and their stories are behind the mechanism that arouses compassion in people and leads them to donate to the ASPCA. But the mission of the ASPCA is to help animals as a whole, and its success is measured in numbers (e.g. how many animals did it rescue?) Within this framework, each individual animal is fairly insignificant.

I’m sorry…how is that bittul torah, exactly?

in reply to: Anti-Semitic Apartment Rating #964627

As far as I know, the review was submitted anonymously (and judging by the dates, I believe she moved out before my friend moved in anyway).

in reply to: Stupid ASPCA commercials #1040069

I never suggested feeding baby squirrels (that’s cute, though).

Yes, urban sprawl is constructive. We are not going to go back to pre 1800 and this really is the right decision for us. But we should consider the impact it has on the environment, including both plants and animals, and take appropriate corrective action.

in reply to: Anti-Semitic Apartment Rating #964626

Every complex has its issues. I’m sure the management/maintenance is not absolutely perfect. But the higher rates for non-Jewish residents must be a complete fabrication. If it were true, they would have been sued long ago.

in reply to: Stupid ASPCA commercials #1040067

Why not? “The earth” means the earth and everything in it, no?

in reply to: Stupid ASPCA commercials #1040064

With power comes responsibility. If we have “conquered” the earth, and are in charge of all its creatures, that means we need to make responsible decisions. “Conquer” does not mean “abuse”.

    Human beings as a whole have this achrayus, regardless of whether or not we as individuals were the abusers of animals. ?????? ??????? ????????? ???-???????, ???????????; ??????? ???????? ??????, ???????? ???????????, ???????-??????, ?????????? ???-???????.

    It’s not a joke, unfortunately.

in reply to: Who Is Your Favourite President #963896

If by the “official story” you mean proven fact…

in reply to: Stupid ASPCA commercials #1040059

benignuman, 1) if more people were to support the ASPCA, they could afford to provide food and shelter for strays indefinitely, and 2) a quick and painless lethal injection provides the animal with a much more pleasant exit from this world than the ravages of starvation and disease on the streets.

in reply to: Stupid ASPCA commercials #1040058

Curiosity, the question was hypothetical. I was not actually expecting a list of the tzedakahs you support. Please explain (in more detail than “basic daas Torah”) why you believe it is assur to donate to the ASPCA.

in reply to: Stupid ASPCA commercials #1040057

You are correct. I should have said that we can make sure when we are buying/adopting pets that we choose one that is already spayed or neutered.

in reply to: Stupid ASPCA commercials #1040052

Well, then, to reference one of your earlier posts: if animals could live in their natural habitat without us bothering them or them bothering us, all would be fine and there would be no need for the ASPCA. I shed no tears for animals killed by natural predators. However, because of human intrusion into animal environments (industrialization destroying the places where they live and feed is a big example, not to mention human breeding of animals for pets causing an overrun of strays with not enough food to go around), we have made it impossible for them to live as they should, according to the biological programming you mentioned. Therefore, we have an achrayus to correct this issue by spaying/neutering our pets, rescuing animals we come across who are in obvious distress (this should go without saying but do it safely), etc. One way to help rectify the damage we have done is to donate to the ASPCA, which provides food and shelter for those strays and rehabilitates animals who have been cruelly abused by humans.

in reply to: Stupid ASPCA commercials #1040048

Curiosity, your first post was expressed in a hate-filled way, although your later posts were toned down more.

popa, if you think there is “no charitable purpose at all” in relieving the suffering of Hashem’s briyos, then I guess we have nothing more to discuss.

in reply to: Stupid ASPCA commercials #1040045

To add to that: if you have pets, you must feed them first, and you must relieve the burden of a donkey even if his owner is your enemy.

By the way, Curiosity, do you/would you donate to yeshivos? Why, when you could instead donate to a tzedakah that feeds starving people or one that provides medical care to dying people? Do you donate to BOTH the yeshivos AND the lifesaving tzedakahs? In that case, why shouldn’t one donate to the ASPCA as well?

in reply to: Who Is Your Favourite President #963891

He was born on August 4, 1961 in Hawaii. The above claim has been debunked over and over again.

in reply to: Who Is Your Favourite President #963889

Fun fact: the youngest U.S. president to be in office was Theodore Roosevelt at age 42.

in reply to: What pet would you want? #964266

Sadly, my husband is allergic to pet hair. Otherwise I would want a big, cuddly, energetic dog (either a Scottish deerhound or a borzoi).

Eventually, we are going to get a bunny rabbit and keep it in an outside hutch. Smaller animal=less hair=healthy husband 🙂

in reply to: Stupid ASPCA commercials #1040040

Thanks for your concern for my neshama.

First of all, Hashem does not desire korbanos from us anymore, since we don’t have a Beis Hamikdash, and the Rambam in Moreh Nevuchim even suggests that He will not desire korbanos from us in the future, when it is rebuilt. But all that is an aside, since it wasn’t my actual point.

Second of all, the pasuk is generally interpreted as saying that Hashem is not interested in our bein adam l’makom if our bein adam l’chaveiro is totally out of whack. (After some more hyperbole in the same vein as the first pasuk I quoted, the navi goes on to say ??????? ?????? ????????? ?????????, ????????? ??????; ???????? ??????, ?????? ?????????. Learn to do well; seek justice, relieve the oppressed, judge the fatherless, plead for the widow).

in reply to: Stupid ASPCA commercials #1040036

.??????-???? ???-?????????? ?????? ??????, ??????????? ?????? ??????? ??????? ?????????; ????? ??????? ??????????? ????????????, ??? ?????????? (Yeshayahu 1:11) To what purpose is the multitude of your sacrifices unto Me? saith the LORD; I am full of the burnt-offerings of rams, and the fat of fed beasts; and I delight not in the blood of bullocks, or of lambs, or of he-goats.

in reply to: Stupid ASPCA commercials #1040034

I am sure the ASPCA does not make juvenile character judgments of those who disagree with them. Passion can be expressed in many different ways. Some are polite and make the point without lambasting people; others are unedited and attack-based (btw, you want to talk about letting emotions control you? look to your own posting first).

Now PETA is another story. Please do not equate PETA with the ASPCA.

in reply to: Stupid ASPCA commercials #1040030

The ASPCA and its supporters, as should be obvious.

The usage of capital letters, multiple exclamation points, and language like “SOOO STUPID”, “completely worthless”, and “junk”, in addition to the general hysterical tone of the posting, supports my conclusion.

in reply to: Anti-Semitic Apartment Rating #964621

Google for some interesting articles on the subject of hyphenating the word. I hyphenate because it is still the accepted English spelling and most reliable sources hyphenate.

    haifagirl, any thoughts?

in reply to: Women exercising in public #963937

Sure, but if she is dressed tzniusly, it is still your aveirah for looking.

in reply to: Help Me Forgive #971396

I would find it easier to forgive if the person who hurt me were to stop withholding important information from me for no apparent reason, or at least give an honest answer as to why he can’t/won’t give me the information. Once it is rectified, I have no reason to hold a grudge anymore.

    V’hameyvin yavin.

in reply to: Notary Gemach #963819

Correct. We had our halachic prenup notarized for free by my bank.

If you want to look at a girl who’s jogging, you won’t get to look at her very long unless you too are jogging, because pretty soon she’ll leave you behind!

in reply to: Watching the trial live #964427

What is the license plate game?

in reply to: Stupid ASPCA commercials #1040027

    Curiosity:

“The fact that they keep airing this commercial is a disgrace to humanity. How can a person be SOOO STUPID as to fall for this junk?! The ASPCA clearly preys on the emotions of people to get them to fork over their hard earned cash towards a “charity” that is completely worthless.”

If that’s not hatred, I don’t know what is.
