Jewish ThinkerParticipant
Sam2 and DaasYochid-This is a machlokes haposkim. Some do hold it works and some poskim hold it is symbolic, therefore you should ask a Rav. Nobody is saying it is a bad minhag, we’re just questioning if it is a real hatarah or just symbolic.
Please see the Hebrew books link I posted above.
I just have one question. What exactly is the concern of one not specifying their neder? Is it that we are concerned it is a neder that the judge won’t matir? Why would a dayan not be matir a neder?
Jewish ThinkerParticipantBump
Jewish ThinkerParticipantSam2- Very interesting. Lichora according to what Rav Ovadiah tz”l says there, he would be mater kol isha on a video.
Jewish ThinkerParticipantListen, kids out there, please don’t smoke, cigs and e-cigs! Regular cigarettes are dangerous and E- cigs have chemicals that are dangerous and are also addictive. Scientists don’t yet know the long term effect of e-cigs.
Please, I beg you, don’t make the mistake and smoke! Please, Hashem loves you and gave you a beautiful body. Don’t ruin it by smoking, chas vesholom. Have you ever seen a lung cancer ward? If you ever see one, you can see the terrible effets of smoking.
Barech Hashem, the number of smokers have significaly decreased.
Jewish ThinkerParticipantsushibagel-E-cigs do have harmful chemicals and are addictive.
I am not against someone using them to try to end his addiction to regular cigarettes, but I think you agree that if you are taking them at first, ie. you are not using it to cure an addiction problem to regular cigarettes, it is not a good idea. Indeed, it is a very bad idea.
Jewish ThinkerParticipantWhat do you mean? I always thought that chalav yisrael is not required for cheese and butter.
Jewish ThinkerParticipantTosafos’s heter of aplie telasa is different.
Jewish ThinkerParticipantUMBUMP
Jewish ThinkerParticipantSomeone told me this can possibly be a daas yochid. Anybody know?
Jewish ThinkerParticipantButter and Cheese
Jewish ThinkerParticipantA lot of people rely on this heter, even though the Chazon Ish disagreed.
Jewish ThinkerParticipantDY- I think you need to understand teenager physocology. A teenage kid wants to smoke e-cigs, but he doesn’t know if it is dangerous or mutar. He visits the CR and see people talking about hechsherim on it. Most do not mention the health problems, or the halachik issues. Boom, chas vesholom the kid could end up smoking if given the chance.
Do you want to be the cause of more kids smoking? Does anybody?
Jewish ThinkerParticipantWell, it is the end of the year. Regents, Finals, all the works….
Jewish ThinkerParticipantBump
Jewish ThinkerParticipantI don’t want to bring up the whole debate again, but it is very not pashut, that smoking is mutar. One should certainly ask a Rav before starting to smoke (which has numerous health problems associated with it)
Jewish ThinkerParticipantSam2:
That story is false. R’ Ovadiah knew what she looked like and still listened. He obviously considered it Muttar anyway.
To reiterate Avi K’s question:
How do you know that, and it contradicts his psak in Yabia Omer 1:6(13)?
Jewish ThinkerParticipantJust to add, I know some people here are not big fans of the Frumteens Moderator, but please be respectful.
Jewish ThinkerParticipantThe Frumteens Moderator has a lot on Zionism and the binding nature of the oaths.
PAA, why don’t you debate him directly on Frumteens? You seem very knowledgeable yourself.
Jewish ThinkerParticipantThe Rambam’s heter of aplie telasa lets me repeat loshon hara if it was said in front of three people, and it is the first time, ie. if someone said loshon hara in front of 3 and then one of the 3 repeated it to 3, those 3 can’t repeat it. (There are loads of limitations to this rule, so don’t take this at face value).
So when I bump a thread, I am just repeating over the original loshon hara, in a sense, it is in front of 3 and then I am just repeating it. Maybe there is something to rely upon.
Anyone agree of disagree?
Jewish ThinkerParticipantI don’t understand why Rav Zilber tz”l writes that the whole shayla about the path being longer is only according to the Rashbam?
By his pshat also, we need to know if it is ???? or ????, to know if he loses control and looks, is he a rasha or not?
Jewish ThinkerParticipantDaasYochid, your subtitle is pretty cool, “a singular mind”. Awesome!
Jewish ThinkerParticipantThe Chofetz Chaim is explaining the position of the Rashbam. Why by avodah zarah can one go and not look, but by arayos he can’t? So he answers, like you just posted above. But if one has no other choice he can rely on himself not to come to hirhur, unless he knows he’ll have hirhur. (HebrewBooks doesn’t have Igros Moshe Even Haezer Chelek Aleph on it, but if you see there at the end of Siman 56, it might clarify for you)
Rav Zilber is learning, not like the Rashbam, so even if you have another path, it is mutar if you make sure to close your eyes.
Look, in this sugya, the Gemara gives you some element of trusting yoursef, but acc. to Rashbam as explained by Rav Moshe tz”l, that is only by ???? ???? ??????. Rav Zilber tz”l learns that even by ?? ????? ???? ??????, you can trust yourself not to look.
Rav Moshe is explaining that by ???? ???? ??????, if one looks, then the Torah is patur you (Rashbam), but you still have to guard oneself from Hirhur. But, by ???? ???? ??????, you shouldn’t have put yourself in that position, and besides you know that there is not tznius things there, so that itself might lead to hirhur. By going according to Rav Zilber’s explanation, you avoid Rav Moshe’s kashya. You can’t look either by ???? ???? ?????? or ????, but if you put yourself in a situation and then look, you are a rasha. If by ????, then your not a rasha. So the question of what about hirhur doesn’t arise, bec even by ???? it is assur to look. Acc. to Rashbam, the Torah paturs you, so we have the kashya of what about hirhur that Rav Moshe tz”l deals with.
(I am also a little confused with this sugya)
Jewish ThinkerParticipantnewbee-He says that Tosafos is not a Raayah.
He discusses more about the path’s being longer on the next page after the discussing the Tosafos. Page 300 in Hebrew Books count
???? ?? ????? ??? ??? ??????, ?????? ???? ?? ????? ??? ???? ?????? ?????
?? ???? ???? ??? ???? ???? ????? ??? ???? ?????? ?? ????? ??? ???? ????? ?????
?? ??? ????? ????? ???? ???? ????? ???? ???? ???? ?? ???? ???? ??? ???? ????
???? ????? ?????, ??? ??? ?? ?????? ???? ????? ????????? ????? ?? ?????? ???
????? ????? ?? ???? ?????? ????? ???????? ??? ?????? ???? ???? ????? ?????? ????
?? ?? ???? ????
Interesting, Rav Moshe Feinstein tz”l does not seem to learn like this when he discusses the sugya at the end of Igros Moshe EH Vol. I, 56
Jewish ThinkerParticipantRav Zilber tz”l does mention that if one knows he can’t control himself, he can’t go:
???? ??? ??? ????? ???? ????? ?????
?? ????? ????? ????? ????? ???????? ????? ???? ?? ?????
It is in the lengthy footnote.
newbee-My point is that people read that Rashbam and will tell you Halacha Lemaseh is like that. But that is not pashut, as I have shown.
Just to add, Rav Zilber’s kula also brings a chumra. If you have no other path (????? ???? ??????), you still have to close your eyes.
As he writes:
???? ???
???? ????? ????? ???? ????? ??? ?? ??? ??? ???? ????? ????? ??? ??? ??? ????
???? ??? ???? ???
Rashbam says the Torah paturs you if you look by ???? ???? ??????, but Rav Zilber does not seem to pasken like that.
Jewish ThinkerParticipantOh my gosh, I forgot to put the words ?? ????? next to the words “and the”. Moderators, can you correct?
And further in the teshuva he writes:
??????
??? ????? ?????? ??? ???? ???? ?????, ??? ????? ????? ?? ????? ???? ????? ??????
?? ????? ???? ?? ???? ??????? ???? ????? ?????

Q: What’s the penalty for bigamy?
A: Two mothers-in-law.
The Wolf
RebYid- I can’t believe you used Wolf’s signature, he can sue you, you know 🙂
Jewish ThinkerParticipantGood Shabbos, Good Yom Tov
Jewish ThinkerParticipantI think Rav Frank tz”l was saying (I never really looked into it, so correct me if I am wrong) that since there is no gezeirah on powdered milk, you don’t need a Jew to watch it. But you still need to make sure it is kosher, so government regulations (or maybe even in a country where there are basically no non-kosher animals) we can assume it is from a cow. Rav Moshe tz”l held that government regulation in America is strong enough to actually make it like a Jew watched it. (Anan Sahadi) So it seems that Rav Tzvi Pesach Frank tz”l argued on Rav Moshe’s blanket heter since he only allows one to rely on regulation when one can reasonably assume it is kosher and does not need Chazal’s takannha ie. the gezeirah is not in affect.
So, yes, it seems that in a country where one cannot even assume it is from a cow, it is assur.
Jewish ThinkerParticipantIf you live in a third world country where the government cannot or does not adequately guarantee that the milk presented as cow’s milk is actually cow’s milk, then I believe all would agree that (what we, today, call) CY is an actual bona fide requirement. No?
Shouldn’t powdered milk be allowed still (if you follow those who hold powdered milk does not need to be cy)?
Jewish ThinkerParticipantWell, why don’t you eat chalav stam, is it bec. you consider yourself a baal nefesh or you hold like Rav Yakkov Breisch that the heter of chalav stam is:
?? ?????? ??????? ?????? ?????, ?????? ????? ???? ??? ??? ?? ?? ?????
Jewish ThinkerParticipantThe truth is, I have seen many good arguments of why the three oaths are binding.
Jewish ThinkerParticipantRebYidd23-Do you like apple pie?
Jewish ThinkerParticipantThere seems to be a trend of yeshiva bochurim wearing more fitted clothing. Is that tzinius?
Ya, I know a school that had a rule against very tight fitting clothing for the boys.
Jewish ThinkerParticipantI agree with you. You can still be anti-zionist and hold that the shavous are not binding.
Just to finish off the qoute from Rav Moshe tz”l:
?? ?? ?????? ??? ??????? ??? ?????????, ?”? ?? ?????, ????? ?????? ?? ????? ??????, ????? ?????? ?”? ????? ????? ????. ???? ????? ???? ????? ?? ????? ?????? ?? ????”? ????? ?? ???? ?? ??? ???? ?????, ????? ????? ??.
Jewish ThinkerParticipantAt worst, it’s a violation of the 3 shevuos which is not one of the 613 Mitzvos, it’s not one of the 13 ikkarim of the Rambam, and it’s not even brought down lehalacha by most poskim.
I agree with you. When did the shalash shevous become such a major thing? The fact that there is so little halachik literature on it before the Vayoel Moshe proves my point. (But still if the three oaths are really halachikly binding, then the punishment for it is terrible, “your flesh will be hunted down like animals in the field” chas vesholom)
Just to quote Rav Moshe Feinstein (Thanks, PAA)
????? ?? ???? ????? ??? ???? ?? ??? ??? ?????? ?? ????? ???”? ?? ????? ?????? ??? ???????? ?? ??????? ???? ????? ????? ?????? ?????? ????? ?? ??? ????? ????? ??? ??????

May 8, 2015 9:27 pm at 9:27 pm in reply to: HaRav Shmuel Auerbach: We Must Follow the Path of Gedolei Hadoros Not New Things #1077270Jewish ThinkerParticipantI never understood the not voting thing. Is it Three Oaths related?
Jewish ThinkerParticipantJoseph-I knew you would be pro the story, since you are such an Anti-Chalav Stamist yourself.
Jewish ThinkerParticipant…….still no source for the story
Jewish ThinkerParticipantAnd as always contact your own Rav (From me, not mods)
I take that back, I don’t want to give mussar to people in certain areas.
DaasYochid- Why is this not a case of tzarich iyun?
Jewish ThinkerParticipantubiquitin- When there is a major halachik issue, it is good people go to the Poskim or bring up the problem. When someone sees what they percieve to be a problem (bugs in oj, bugs in water, kosherswitch) and they want to know if there is a real issue. So they go the Rabbonim and they give their psak.
Jewish ThinkerParticipantThe Gemara means it comes from goyim, not that a Jew who is not shomer torah umitzvos and lives like a goy (which Dennis Prager does not, by the way). Your explanation is forced.
Jewish ThinkerParticipantA Yid not living according to the Torah is ?????????.
No, he is still a Yid.
Jewish ThinkerParticipantDaasYochid-It is not nice to make fun of someone else’s hard work.
Jewish ThinkerParticipantI can’t believe Rav Aharon Lichtenstein tzvk”l was niftar. What a gadol he was.
Jewish ThinkerParticipantI was thining about this a little, and it may be possible that bumping a thread with loshon hara on it might fall under the Rambam’s heter of aplie telasa.
Jewish ThinkerParticipantBUMP
April 19, 2015 10:10 pm at 10:10 pm in reply to: Loshon Hora shittas different than the Chofetz Chaim #1134708Jewish ThinkerParticipantMaybe in hashkafah/aggadatah. But in halacha, it seems they were quite lenient. Ever heard of the heter of in front of 3? Just from the Gemara, it is very lenient but the medieval commentators limit its application and the Chofetz Chaim takes a pretty stringent shittah in explaining that Gemara which basically renders the leniency basically, practically, inapplicable.
Jewish ThinkerParticipant??? ????? ????? ????? ?? ????? ???? ???? ???? ??? ????? ???, ??? ?? ?????, ??? ?? ????? ???? ??? ??????? ????? ??? ?? ?????
DaasYochid-This is from the Rabbi Weinfeld teshuva. We don’t know what Rav Moshe tz”l meant when he said “??? ???? ???? ??? ????? ???”? How can you know the price and bother range he meant?
Jewish ThinkerParticipantRebYidd23-It is a random thread.
