I was told by an older relative, that the minhag in Vienna was to give salamis. Since salamis are hung (just like Haman, in case you did not make that connection yourself)

    >>There is UNQUESTIONABLY a lot of shmutz in this world, no doubt about that. But the things you mention show a singular hysteria that is a typical component of decriers of the internet (and why are you posting on it, btw, if you are so opposed and “cannot fathom anything worse in this world?”). Do you seriously not think there are FAR worse, DARKER things in this world than the internet? If so, then I don’t think that I am the naive one, nor do I need to prove a point, because you prove it for me.<<

No, I just know that any of these dark things have sites representing them. I am not saying it should be banned for that reason. Simply questioning the notion that the good outweighs the bad.

    >> All things, money, food, enjoyment of nature, etc. can be used for good purposes or nefarious ones. If we asser everything because it has a potential for bad, then we also lose out on its potential for good<<

Agreed, but realize, just like there are sites out there working on suicide prevention, there are sites out there where people encourage each other to actually commit suicide and give advice on how to do it.

I have no issue with the Gedolim assuring it based upon the notion that the bad outweighs the good. They told us to forgo the zechusim of the Shofar and lulav because of the MERE POTENTIAL of chillul shabbos did they not?!?

    >>Your remark about kids being abducted, as it relates to frum kids, bothered me a great deal. Many kids who are abducted, meet predators in on-line chat rooms. It is far more likely to happen in the general (rather than frum)population where kids need to truly be monitored in their computer use, both at home and by friends<<

In 1995 I was in my mid-teens and active on the youth boards of the Jewish forum of AOL (way back before the offered an unlimited plan). My bio was up in the penpal section. TWICE a frum guy e-mailed me claiming to be in his 40s, from Brooklyn, like me, asking to befriend me. Needless to say I shunned his request. (I wonder to this day if her was successful)

Can someone please explain to me why we must weigh one against the other??

It seems like the only reason we are having this discussion is because some people have tried to discredit the original post by asking what a yeshiva bochur is doing online. Other than that, what is worse a stroke or a heart attack? BOTH CAN KILL!!

As for the comment “The potential for good use of the internet far outweighs the bad, in my opinion.”

Wow you are either totally naive about what is truly out there on the internet, or so blinded by your desire to prove a point that you would make such a statement. I cannot fathom anything worse in this world then the darkest depths of the internet. The internet has been used to abduct children for the purpose of (whatever) and other criminal and immoral activities! I see no way the good can outweigh stuff like that

    Just in case Yashrus20 hasn’t recovered…

R’ Moshe Sternbuch asks why is it that yidden arrange their calendar based upon a lunar calculation, when most other religions base their’s upon a solar calculation.

The Moon has no light of its own. Any illumination viewed from the moon is basically a ricochet from the sun.

Likewise, Klal Yisroel understand that Olam HaZeh is comparable to Choshech (night i.e. moon), and the light of Olam HaZeh is only from the sun (Olam HaRuchni, the spiritual world).

We can enlighten the darkness of this world only through d’vakus b’hashem in Torah and Mitzvos.

This is the the lesson of the lunar calendar.

    >>easy solution, get the Rabbonim to issue a ruling, that no girls are allowed to date/marry any boys that smoke. That will end it quite quickly <<

As if we do not have enough of a shidduch crisis, now we need to remove a large amount of boys from the “shidduch pool”

As I said before, in 2000, there were signs all over Mea Sharim and other neighborhoods about a psak signed by about 35 gedolim (ones people have heard of) stating that “due to new information, smoking is dangerous. It is forbidden to start, we encourage those who have to quit, and if one must smoke, one should do it away from others.”

The signs were up no more than 48 hours. I’d see people ripping them down in front of Zichron Moshe before lighting up.

Incidentally, this psak came out the same time the no-internet psak came out in Eretz Yisroel.

As for those who say that it is none of their business what they do and how they do it. Next time you are on a plane, take a window seat and break open your window mid-flight. When anyone tries to stop you remind them YOU have the Window seat and YOU want the window open and THEY can mind their own business.

About 9 years ago, signs went around all of the charedi neighborhoods of Yerushalyaim signed by ALL of the gedolim stating unequivocally, that smoking was ossur.

So, what did it all accomplish??

    MORE GARBAGE!!!

People just tore down the signs!! Since you can’t smoke next to the sign telling you it is Ossur!! That is what it accomplished!!

I wish you the best of luck in this endeavor.

    at least we are good.

Not everyone is able to follow conversations on the boards. Remember, a few days ago, there were many more posts in between. Additionally, not every time is a poster coming as a continuation of their previous post sometimes they are coming with a fresh idea. Try to keep that in mind in the future.

Since you want Chassidishe, here you go! (By the way, the following was quoted by the Chasam Sofer)

R’ Shimson Ostropoli asks, Where do we see that Moshe was told to warm Paroh about the Arbeh (i.e. how did he know that the 7th plague would be arbeh)?

    ?? ??-????: ??-??? ?????? ??-???, ???-?? ?????, ???? ??? ???? ???, ?????

There is a known rule in ????? that certain letters form groups based upon how they are said, and letter in these groups can be interchangeable. ???? form a group of guttural letters. ???? form a group of letters which are said using the lips.

So, getting back to the point, how did Moshe know to warn Paroh about Arbeh?

    Hashem tells Moshe: ?? ??-???? – put the word ?? into ????.

    In order ???? ??? ???? ???, ?????

???? ???- In order that I may place

???? ???, ????? these LETTERS in him. since the ? is in the same group as the ?. and the ? is in the same group as the ?. Put the letters of ?? into the word ???? replacing the letters of their group, and what are we left with (after scrambling the letters)?

    ????

That is how Moshe was able to tell Paroh what the 7th plague would be.

    >>I feel this shows that your claims have all been based on emotion. Your passion to defend your lifestyle, by claiming everyone throughout history has lived exactly as you do, has led you way of base. Again it was a point regarding history, I had a support.<<

Please show me where I have made this claim. I know the history and I know about the drives to get women to resume covering their hair in the USA. I too have pictures of frum family members showing all of their hair (once again, great job making an accusation without basis of facts).

Additionally, my comment was not about the history, only the fact that YOU did not indicate that you were bringing in the Aruch to show that women didn’t cover their hair WHETHER OR NOT IT WAS ERVA. By saying what you did, “He wrote that it is no longer a dover sheberva and therefore a man can make a brocha in front of uncovered hair” you ventured into a halachic conversation.

    >>No, but your ignorance of the subject would lead anyone to make a similar “accusation”.<<

Where is the ignorance. I only requested that you make it known why you were quoting the aruch in the first place, which you did not. and you then follow up your statement which was easily taken out of context by insulting people who took it on face value.

    >>Not everyone has time like Joseph and you to write a whole megilla<<

fewer people have the time, resources or know-how to look up the aruch. So why say the quote that you did, and why assume people would either know the aruch or look it up, when by your own admission acknowlege people do not have the time for such things.

You know what you wanted to say, but that does not mean that the other members of the coffee room do, AND THAT DOES NOT MEAN THAT WE ARE IGNORANT.

Once again, I am not a revisionist and I am not here to paint a different picture of the past. but your original comment and subsequent justifications are akin to saying that we say 3 times day in davening : ??-??-????? ??? ??-?????? ?????.

    Azi said:

    >>JayMatt19,

You are correct in quoting me, but you haven’t seen the Aruch inside, so it’s only fair that you don’t understand what he was referring to (and ipso facto what I meant).<<

No, I have seen it inside. Do you often make accusations without basis of fact?

    >> He wrote that it is no longer a dover sheberva and therefore a man can make a brocha in front of uncovered hair. He didn’t write, nor did I claim that he wrote that women do not need to cover their hair.<<

He did not write that it is “no longer” he was discussing a situation where one is in a location where such is the practice. He did not say that is is now an “across the board halacha”. It is actually quite a relative halacha.

Additionally, you did not initially make this distinction. You originally claimed “See the Aruch Hashulchan who paskens that hair in longer a dover sheberva, since woman don’t cover it anymore.” This very much implies that since it is not a davar sheb’erva, one need not cover it. You did not make the distinction that this was solely a halacha regarding brachos. It was only after Joseph made the distinction that you applied it as well. Did you not know the distinction? Did you want people to look it up? or did you purposely mislead people?

    >>Do you think I assumed that the Aruch Hashulchan was a reform rabbi, changing halacha with the times?<<

    Not at all.

    >> He wrote what I said he wrote, thats a fact, if you don’t like it, go find where he’s buried and complain.<<

That is like saying Dovid Hamelech said: ??-??-????? ??? ??-?????? ?????

    >> I’m just his humble messenger. <<

I’m not sure what disturbs me more the claim of being a messenger, or the claim of doing it humbly. Neither one seems fitting

In the beginning of this week’s parsha, Paroh asks Moshe: ?? ???, ?????? (lit. Who and Who will be the journeymen?)

The Ba’al Haturim has an interesting way of understanding this dialogue. According to the Ba’al Haturim, Paroh is telling Moshe ?? ???, ?????? who is going to leave here to enter into Eretz Yisroel? it is ?? ???, only 2 people! Only Yehoshua and Calev will leave and enter into Eretz Yisroel, everyone else will die in the Midbar.

    ?? ???, ?????? in Gematria is ??? ??? ???

To this Moshe Rabbeinu replied: ??????? ???????? ??? (With our youth and with our elders we shall go). That the punishment preventing the dor hamidbar from entering into Eretz Yisroel was not placed upon those under the age of 20, nor was it placed upon those over the age of 60.

quote “hey curious, i’ve never heard of the shoes question before! but i don’t get it- which one is supposed to be frummer/better- lace up or slip on?”

Seriously speaking, that is the best part of the question, When speaking with references one should try to ask questions in a fashion in which the one being asked does not know what answer the questioner is seeking.

When I was doing research for a bochur who wanted to learn, but likes taking time out to do chessed, I was asked to make sure the girl would not think the guy is not serious in his learning were he to take a seder off to check the local eruv. Rather than asking if she would be okay were he to do chessed at times (obviously a leading question) I asked if there were a situation where a chesed arose which could be done by someone else would she prefer her husband be in the yeshiva learning or go do the chessed. Two people ducked the question then asked me what the proper answer is. My response “THE PROPER ANSWER IS WHATEVER THE GIRL WOULD HONESTLY WANT!!”

Nevertheless, the shoes question is one of the most ridiculous ones out there.

Maybe we should inquire about all her shoes 😉

    ????, ??-????? ??-???? ???-????–??-? ???; ???? ?’, ?? ?????? ???

Rashi in Dibur HaMaschil ???? says “?? ?????”

The question here is What was bothering Rashi? (note: d’var torah not taken from Rabbi Bonchek’s book with the same name) We can see from the rest of the passuk that it was to the ?????!

The Ramban says that this was in essence a printers error. That the entire dibbur hamaschil was supposed to be the whole passuk, but someone shortened ??-????? ??-???? ???-???? to ?? ?????.

This answer is difficult on a number of reasons (especially since we don’t like to just take a difficulty and avoid it by saying it is a printers error)

So, how to all those other Rishonim and Achronim who don’t say like the Ramban understand what Rashi is adding here?

I saw in the Tallilei Oros (from a source whom I have never heard of before) the following p’shat. ?? ?????, and make the ???? not ?? ?????. Meaning that Hashem spoke with each one, since each one was an ??. Hashem spoke to ???? &???? not because they were the son and grandson of ?????, rather, each one had their own zechusim and each one had a right on their own to be called an ??.

We would but we cannot pronounce it! I never thought I’d say this, but it would be much easier to pronounce the name of the tyrant running Iran than your screenname 😉

Anyways, since somehow I was told I have volunteered to give a d’var torah, here goes.

    Parshas Vaera

After the 3rd plague, the wizards tell Paroh that “It is the finger of G-d”.

The Ibn Ezra has an interesting way of interpreting this assessment of the wizards.

The Ibn Ezra writes that the wizards told Paroh that this plague was not brought for the benefit of the Jews (i.e. that they be freed), rather the stars are showing that it is purely a punishment for the Egyptians.

The Ibn Ezra learned the Paroh did not recognize Hashem at this point, and the proof of this (as well as the previous p’shat) is the fact that they say Etzba Elokim He (It is the finger of G-d) without mentioning that Hashem is Elokei Yisroel

No action here for a bit, so here is a bonus d’var torah.

There has been some discussion here about the brachos of “shelo asani Isha” and “She’asani k’rtzono”. So here are two pshatim I saw.

The question here is: “Why do men not say “She’asani K’rtzono” are we not according to his ratzon? (yashrus20, I think i saw that R’ Schwab quotes the Maharal who says your pshat)

Anyways #1: After creating man, Hashem said “Lo Tov…”, and altered his original creation. So, according to this opinion (The Ma’asas Kepi) the bracha “She’asani K’rtzono” is said not because it is only women who are made like his ratzon, rather, the 1st woman was created K’rzono (in line with his desire) as Hashem did not need to make changes to this creation where are the 1st man was not made K’rtzono (as evident by the need to make a change)

Answer #2 (Siach Zvi, quoted by R’ Yehuda Leib Liff): When Hashem created man :Na’aseh Adam”, Chazal learn that Hashem conferred with the angels about whether to, and how to make man. However, when creating the female, no such exchange took place, and as such the woman was created 100% from Hashem’s will (K’rtzono) i.e. without any outside assistance.

And now we can see why the bracha of “She’asani K’rtzono” is ideal for women but not for men

no prob doing Motzei Shabbos as a “permanent” (might be a good idea since i am in Yerushalayim)

Might be an idea to have 2 sign ups, the 1st for permanents, and the second on a weekly basis. With 2 each day, there will be less opportunity to miss a day.

and on to the d’var Torah…

I said this at my table Leil Shabbos (found in the Tallilei Oros):

The Ramban (quoting the Ibn Ezra) asks why the Torah goes out of its way, to mention all the details of Sarah’s miraculous birth at age 90, while all but ignoring the fact that Yocheved gave birth to Moshe at age 130?!?

The answer he gives is that the Torah (and Neviim) goes out of its way to state the miracles which where foretold though prophecy, while generally turning a “blind eye” to those which occur without being foretold via prophecy.

The Apirion states that since the miracle was already mentioned by Sarah, there was no need for the Torah to mention the occurrence of a similar miracle by Yocheved.

The Dubna Maggid gives a Mashal to answer this question.

Two paupers (who collect door-to-door) met each other on the road one night. The started chatting about where the other was coming from, and how they did there. Reuven told Shimon that he came from Plonyville, and everyone there gave him $20.

Shimon responded to Reuven, stating that when he went to Plonyville, everyone gave him $40.

Reuven asked Shimon when he collected there. Shimon’s reply: “Purim”

Reuven ten told Shimon that Purim is neither a chiddush nor a proof, since on Purim many members of Klal Yisroel go out of their way to give extra Matanos L’evyonim. It could even be, said Reuven, that my $20 during regular times is a greater proof of their generosity then the $40 you received on Purim.

So what is the connection? Yocheved had Moshe during the time of “Paru V’Yashritzu V’Yarbu B’me’od me’od”. It was considered normal for sextuplets to be born. As such, Yocheved having a child at 130 was nothing special. However, nothing of the sort was happening during the time of Avraham and Sarah. During there time, things were operating under the laws of teva (nature). Thus the birth of Yitchak was indeed much more miraculous, despite the fact that, at the time of their respective births, Sarah was 40 year Yocheved’s junior.

I feel a bit embarrassed that there has not been any action on this board basically all day.

Since multiple divrei torah are permitted, here goes:

The Vilna Gaon was once asked why the notes “Kadma V’azla” were assigned to the words “V’yimarriru es chayeyhem” (and he embittered their lives), since they are notes generally used for happier instances.

The Vilna Gaon replied that since the Egyptians embittered the lives of Bnei Yisroel, “Kadmu V’Azlu” Benei Yisroel got up (Kadmu) and left (azlu) 190 years earlier than destined.

Additionally, Kadman V’Azla is gematria 190

If one does a bris on their son at 5 days old, they have not done a mitzva. We are commanded that for the first seven days the orlah must remain, and only on the eighth day must it be removed. Perhaps one of the lessons we can see from a bris is that: What was good enough yesterday is not good enough for today, and what is good enough for today, should not be good enough for tomorrow.
