A friend of mine drove down a flight of stairs on a dare (and it was the girl’s 1st ever date)

How you ask? It was Yerushalayim on one of the streets which turn into a staircase at the end. This one did not have a barrier

The boy should go before the girl. AND THE GIRL SHOULD HAVE NO IDEA THE BOY IS LOOKING INTO HER!! This way, the girl should only know when a boy says yes, and it is only the boys who need to deal with rejection (since the girl will only have the opportunity to decide yes or no after the boy says yes).

The problem is that people spill the beans (see previous thread titled “privacy” for further discussion). But ideally, the way it should work is that a girl will not know when a boy has said no.

Thanks, good to know I am of some help.

I am a shaddchan (small time) and I also give hadracha (when asked). If you have any questions I’d be happy to answer. But I think those “basics” were a good start.

    1. Make sure all parties have a Rov or mentor who they are in contact with vis-a-vis the checking and dating process

    2. Know the difference between ???? and ??? (Hashkafos are ????, Tablecloths and what soup is served friday night is a ???.

    3. Let it be known you are listening to suggestions, but keep quiet about your dating, ESPECIALLY TO OTHER BOCHURIM OR SINGLE GIRLS. Only speak with family and your Rov/Mentor about the dates.

    4. Be Aware, and be a Mentch. Often dates turn sour because one party lacks a certain level of awareness towards the other person. Try to read their features, are they cold, tired, thirsty (You can ask if you have a doubt!)

    5. If it doesn’t work out, you can suggest it to a friend if you think it might be Shayach.

    6. You need not be 100% certain an idea will work in order to reht a shidduch

    7. When you have an answer, give it. Nothing is worse than waiting for the other party to give an answer.

    8. Be Honest with the Shaddchan, if you have an aversion to Hotel Lobbies, tell the shaddchan to let the other side know.

    9. Try not to go out 2 days in a row. Also, if possible, try to avoid going back to the same place. Easier to differentiate what happened on what date when things are in different locations.

    10. Be yourself. And always to a cheshbon after each date asking yourself “How do I act in the presence of this person?” am I honest, do they bring out my good qualities, or those middos I need to improve? You get a much clearer picture when you analyze yourself. Only afterwords should you analyze the other party.

That is just some quick things off the top of my head.

R’ Aryeh Finkel (As seen in the Lekach Tov on Shabbos) says that Shabbos is a time for Teshuva.

The Midrash Rabba on Bereishis says that after Kayin killed Hevel, He had the following encounter with his father Adam HaRishon:

Adam HaRishon: “How did your case turn out?”

Kayin: “I did Teshuva and was spared”

Adam HaRishon then proclaims: “This is the power of Teshuva, and I had not known (until now)! He then said “????? ???, ???? ????.”. We need to understand the connection between this psalm, and teshuva. When looking at this psalm, it does not appear to have any mention of teshuva. Additionally, other than the 1st line, what does it have to do with Shabbos?

We can answer this from a story with R’ Sa’adia Gaon. R’ Sa’adia Gaon says he learned the Inyan of teshuva from a simple individual. R’ Sa’adia Gaon was once due to arrive in a specific town, and that town held a lottery as to who would meet and escort the Rav during his stay in this town. The lottery was won by a simple man, who did not know the gadlus of R’ Sa’adia Gaon. Nevertheless, he was respectful to the Rav and fulfilled every request the Rav had. When he discovered the true gadlus of R’ Sa’adia Gaon, he apologized and requested mechila, for had he known the gadlus of the Rav, he would have honored him much more.

R’ Sa’adia Gaon says that we learn teshuva from this person. A person does teshuva for recognizing that he did not honor, respect or serve HaKadosh Baruch Hu properly. Behold, now he better realizes the Gadlus of Hashem, and thus he acknowledges that he should have served Hashem better than he has until now. Everyday a tzaddik has a greater realization of the Gadlus of Hashem, and thus he realizes that his servitude until now has been lacking. Even more so when one recognizes that Aveiros have been committed, this shows a lacking in one’s acceptance of the Gadlus Hashem, and when one is able to recognize this Gadlus, ultimately a teshuva needs to be done to repair the previous flawed servitude.

So, what is the connection to Shabbos? On Shabbos we have a Nishama Yiseira and (as the Ibn Ezra says) we have a greater ability of recognition. Therefore, through Shabbos, one can reach a higher level of Emuna (and this is inbuilt within the Shabbos, from Ma’aseh Breishis). Then one is awakened to do teshuva, since he realizes that his service of Hashem until now wasn’t 100%.

Now we can see how this psalm works (even without explicitly talking about Shabbos, or Teshuva). Adam HaRishon saw the power of teshuva, and said ????? ???, ???? ????. Shabbos completes the creation (of a person), and with this power that Shabbos adds, one has a greater lever of understanding the Koach and Gadlus of Hashem, and this brings him to the aforementioned teshuva.

    This also explains why the psalm only discusses praise of Hashem. For when Shabbos enters a person (and completes him) he then sees the greatness of Hashem and he says: ?? ?????? ?’ ?????; ????? ???? ???? (For you make me glad by your deeds, Hashem;

I sing for joy at the works of your hands.) Through this happiness we are able to do teshuva.

This is how we see that the psalm ????? ???, ???? ???? discusses both Shabbos and Teshuva without ever mentioning Teshuva!

Wow, ghost town. (Yashrus, hope you are feeling better, but it is after midnight here in Yerushalayim, and I have yet to see Torah on the board today) Besides, I like challenging myself to find something new to post, so thanks everyone for helping me! (Trying to judge ??? ????, which is the topic)

Here is something from the Gevuras Yitzchak on Pirchei Avos:

???? ?? ?? ?? ???? ??? ????. (One should judge every man with the benefit of the doubt).

    Does this apply towards non-Jews?

Tosfos in Bava Kama says that ??? only refers to Yidden. However, it doesn’t say ??? here, it says ????, and that CAN incorporate non-Jews as well. Therefore, it appears that here, in Pirchei Avos, we are told that we must judge EVERYONE with the benefit of the doubt.

The Rambam in the Sefer HaMitzvos states that the obligation of judging someone with the benefit of the doubt is derived from the passuk ????, ???? ????? (with righteousness you shall judge your fellow). Non-Jews, are not included in the word ?????, therefore, it would seem obvious that they are not included in the obligation to judge with the benefit of the doubt.

However, the Chafetz Chaim quotes the Rambam’s Peirush HaMishnayos on this Mishna, where he states that our mishna in Pirchei Avos is not Halacha, just “Darchei HaChassidus”. Therefore, the mishna is saying even in cases where one need not judge with the benefit of the doubt (according to the letter of the law), nevertheless, Darchei HaChassidus says to judge favorably. Therefore we can say that even though one is not obligated according to the letter of the law to give the benefit of the doubt to non-Jews, Darchei HaChassidus, as taught here in Pirchei Avos, says one should give them the benefit of the doubt.

The Gevuras Yitzchak concludes with the famous words “????? ???? ???” (and this requires further investigation!)

    >>JayMatt, I completely feel and sympathize with what happened. I just don’t understand how you were not engaged if you had a (small) l’chayim already.<<

I was not keeping a secret from my family. We wanted to give my mom the kavod of meeting her before becoming officially engaged, but also wanted a tiny celebration with my mother-in-law prior to departing to the USA (I was departing a week earlier than my wife). It wasn’t an easy juggle, but we tried. Only to have this random woman call everyone, even a close friend of mine.

100% with you on this one. My wife and I met in Israel and were going to become officially engaged in NY (after she came to meet my parents). Prior to leaving Israel, we had a small l’chaim. Someone heard about the l’chaim, called his mother in NY to say what was going on. She turned a called all of my friends and my parents friends to say I was engaged. She truly robbed my mother. This absolutely devastated my mother as she felt that she was not allowed to meet my wife before we got engaged. Did we do anything wrong, no. Were we engaged, no. She just decided to spread the news too soon, for no reason other than she knew something others did not.

Here is something so that we have a Wednesday d’var torah (do I have a chazaka for Wednesdays yet?) Please continue to give and encourage others to sign up!!

The Importance of T’fillas Mincha (As Seen in the Sifsei Chaim (Rinas Chaim on Shmoneh Esrei)

During a Ta’anis, the Kehilla only says Aneinu (in their silent Shmoneh Esrei) by mincha. Why?

The Gemarra in Brachos says: “A person shall always be cautious with t’fillas mincha, for Eliyahi HaNavi was only answered during Mincha”. We see from here that their is a special segulah for mincha prayers to be accepted

The Tur adds to question of why is Mincha a special advantage? He says that Shachris has a set time when one wakes up, prior to going to work. Ma’ariv also has a set time, after one has come home, done with a day’s work. Mincha however, being in the middle of the day is during one’s working hours. One needs to stop working in order to daven. And one who is able to put their work aside in order to daven a proper mincha (with proper Kavana, not thinking about work or other things) one receives great reward. As it says in pirchei avos “???? ???? ????” in accordance with the struggle is the reward.

There is also another reason. During Shachris, one has Birchas HaShachar, pezukei d’zimra, Birchas Krias Shema and Krias Shema all prior to the Shmoneh Esrei of Shachris. It is therefore easier for one to have the proper mindset during Shmoneh Esrei. Ma’ariv also has Krias Shema and brachos before its Shmoneh Esrei. Mincha, however, only has Ashrei, and then immediately into Shmoneh Esrei. Therefore, if one is able to strengthen oneself to have the proper kavana during mincha, their reward will be great.

Since Mincha has the ability to be heard (accepted) greater than other t’fillos, it was therefore established that Aneinu be added only during Mincha on a ta’anis.

May we all be zoche to using the message, to strengthen our Mincha prayers, to say them with proper kavana and focus.

    >> To call the tefilah for parnassah a segulah is misleading. Saying it today is no different than saying it yesterday or tomorrow. It may be nice to say it today if you need it, but then say it every day.<<

There is such a thing as an Eis Ratzon. A time where certain types of tefillos are more powerful. There is a beautiful tfilla from the Shlah HaKaddosh about raising children. It can be said whenever you wish, but there is a speciall Inyan to say it Yom Kippur Katan for Sivan.

    >>Many “segulos” come from pagan and other non-Jewish sources, and they are worthless at best.<<

No argument here, but why passul the real segulas because of this? We see in Parshas VaYetzei that the Dudaim had the power to assist in becoming pregnant, so much so that Leah and Rochel fought over them! (And have a look at the Rabeinu Bechaye who says that It is rubies, and it still works for someone who has fertility issues or trouble giving birth). Is it automatic? hardy. Can it work without tfillos? doubt it.

But all sgulos are worthless? There are Mishnayos, Gmorros, Rishonim and others who humbly disagree with your opinion

This is L’Illuy Nishmas my grandmother (Yehudis Dasha Bas Zev) whose Yarzheit is today, the 9th of Shvat.

(Mod, if you want to have this as the Tuesday d’var torah and you’ll give Wednesday that is fine, also if you want me to give another so we have one for Wed, that is fine too).

(nossond, hope this is not your d’var torah for next week)

R’ Shimon Schwab inquires about the placement of a particular passuk in this weeks Parsha. In between the Shira of Az Yashir and the Shira of Miriam and the women, the Torah tells us: ?? ?? ??? ???? ????? ???????, ???

(Rashi says that it was because Paroh and his people were chasing, therefore Miriam and the other women took musical instruments)

    Nevertheless, why the interruption?

The Gemarra in Sotah says that it was in the zechus of the righteous women that Klal Yisroel escaped mizraim. R’ Schwab says that we can even say that durin the miracle at the Yam that the Women had a higher level of Emunah and Bitachon then the men.

The men only said their Shira after ???? ????? ??-?????, ?? ??-??? ???. Only after the men saw that the Mitzrim were dead did they say shira (they were afraid that the same way they went in, so too the mitzrim, and the same way they’d come out, so too the mitzrim). And only ??, only once that fear was calmed, then ????-??? ???? ????? ??-????? ????, were they able to say their shira.

The women, however, said shira once ?? ?? ??? ???? ????? ???????, ???. Since they did not have the same fear as the men, and they were able to recognize the fact that a ?? was occurring and would continue to occur to provide them with salvation. Thus they were able to say their shira before the men did.

This is the lesson of the interruption of the one passuk.

I saw this during the whole El-Al / Shabbos Fiasco:

In view of El Al’s handling of the recent unfortunate situation of potentially having aircraft and passengers stranded on Erev Shabbat in the aftermath of a general strike in Israel, I propose that a new Charedi airline should now be established offering the following facilities:

    * Strict pre flight passenger religious profiling. Booking available through Haimishe Travel Agents only, positively no internet booking or check in facilities. No airport (or any other) taxes.

    * Flexible departure times, Magen Avraham, Gra, Rabbenu Tam etc.

    * Security personal to be replaced by modesty police to check appropriate attire.

    * Exclusive Platinum check in desk for all passengers.

    * Unique “Maso Umattan” desk to negotiate upgrades and denied boarding compensation.

    * Flight check in to commence 90 minutes after scheduled departure time.

    * Unlimited checked in and hand baggage allowances.

*Only 279 Passengers may be booked for seating on any flight. Additional passengers may board right before takeoff to Standing Room Only” area for “Simchas Ya’aleh V’yavo”.

    * Arrival at the departure gate 15 minutes after the last call positively encouraged.

    * Frequent flyer “Middos Points” awarded on the basis of in flight Blatt Gemmoro learned. Bonus points available for the most original new Chumras submitted to the Board.

    * On board fully equipped Beis Hamidrash offering running Minyanim, shiurim and live video links to your Rebbe. Unrestricted use of mobile (Kosher) phones, absolutely no internet access.

*Pilots cabin will be reconfigured to hold 3-5 baby seats (in addition to normal cabin crew)

*Emergency under seat inflatable vests will now come in black or dark navy as Yellow is not a Tznisudik color

*To offset operating expenses Charedi Air will lease its planes from a reputable Brooklyn car leasing establishment (don’t worry about excess mileage)

    * Four unique travel classes ranging from the exclusive Rambam First Class for Gedolei Hador only; Shelita Class for Dayanim and senior Rabbonim; Kolel Class for those who have been in full time learning for at least 30 years and Yeshivishe Class with optional seating. Women will be seated at the rear of the hold (subject to receiving permission to board from the modesty police). Women deemed to be immodestly dressed or wearing wigs with Indian hair will be relegated into overhead compartment

    * Mashgichim Temidim to replace flight attendants offering a choice of cuisine with outstanding Hechsherim ranging from Bedatz to Monsey Super Glatt.

    * No refreshments will be served on the following Taanesim:- Taanis Esther, Tzom Gedalyo, Asoro BeTeves, Shivo Osor BeTammuz and Hey Iyyar.

    * To prevent the possible desecration of the holy Shabbos (chas v’sholom) flights will only be scheduled on Monday to Wednesday. In addition flights will not run on the following days:-Erev Yom Tov, Yom Tov Sheini Shel Golyus, Isru Chag, Purim, 1-10 Av (until after Chatzos). Schedules are subject to disruption after Purim during which time aircraft will be thoroughly Kashered for Pesach.

*Seat belts will be replaced by “Seat Gartels”

*”Pre flight” safety video will be replaced by professional make and female actors (all shoimer shabbos who will depict instructions)

*Free retouching of passport pictures for single girls 16 and over

    *Lighting should be chandeliers

*All cabin crew should be either Hispanic or Polish with shared passport

*First class isn’t booked its auctioned for a tzedaka

*Baby carriages don’t have to be stored, they can be left in the aisles

*Planes are allowed to double and triple park on runways if pilot has to “run into terminal for just a second”

    The Rinas Chaim asks:

Why in the Bracha of Barech Aleynu do we specifically ask HaKadosh Baruch Hu to bless the Shana (year)? ??????? ???????? ?’ ?????-???? ??? ?????????

Additionally, why do we only ask for the Shana HaZos (current year)? ??????? ???????? ?’

    ?????-???? ??? ????????? ??????

Let us ask for a general unlimited Bracha!

The Rinas Chaim answers the above questions using the “Avnei Eliyahu” as a guide. It is called a ???????? Since there are 355 days in a non-leap year (with Cheshvan and Kislev both having months of 30). ??????? is also in the same “family as ????? (change) since a year has many different periods (hot season, cold season, wet season, dry season etc.)

    So, when we say

    ??????? ???????? ? ?????-???? ??? ????????? ??????’

We are asking HaKadosh Baruch Hu for all the changes, and every period and season be plentiful, prosperous and good.

oomis said “I still do not agree with the points about the awfulness of the computer,”

What will it take for you to admit that the dangers outweigh the advantages?

Chazal said all of klal yisroel stops blowing the shofar on shabbos because SOMEONE MIGHT carry it B’SHOGEG. How much more so when we KNOW there are MANY frum yidden who use the internet for things which are ossur!

Do I need to give examples?

How many Frum Yidden do you think saw…

    – the Daniel Pearl video?

    -The Saddam hanging?

-movies rated “worse than R” ? (trying to keep it clean hear Mods)

    -any Yousef Al-Khattab messages?

Do you not think there was a reason the Agudah donated an entire convention to the threat posed by bloggers? Children hear one thing from a Rebbe, then go on the internet to see that a blogger who has anointed him or herself with da’as torah says differently.

Have you heard of “FailedMessiah” or “UnorthodoxJew” (If you have not all the power to you).

Need instructions how to build a bomb? How to do other illegal activities? It is all here.

Obviously I am an internet user. I am just asking why you insist that a) It is not that bad, and b)the good far outweighs it?
