??????????? ???????? ?????????? – Bring us back, our father, to your Torah

The Avudraham asks, why is the word, ???????? (our father) used here when asking for Torah?

The Midrash in Shmos Rabba says (on the passuk) “???? ???-???, ???: ?????, ???? ????” (The Torah that Moshe commanded us is the heritage of the Congregation of Yaakov, passuk in V’zos HaBracha) don’t read it ?????, heritage, rather ?????, an inheritance.

One inherits from their father. HaKadosh Baruch Hu is considered a father to Klal Yisroel ???? ???, ??’ ??????. Therefore we call Hashem ????????, our father. The other nations, however, do not have this level of closeness to HaKadosh Baruch Hu, just slaves to a master. Therefore it says ???? ???-???, ???: ?????/?????, to whom, to ???? ???? and to nobody else.

So, back to our original question, why use the word ????????, when asking to be returned to Torah?

The answer is given through a Mashal. The son of a king leaves the kingdom of his father. When he hears that his father is dying, he returns to receive his inheritance. He isn’t embarrassed to ask for it, after all, he is a son of the king.

Likewise, by saying ??????????? ???????? ??????????, with the addition of the word ????????, we ask Hashem that all those who have left the Derech HaYashar return to Torah without any embarrassment in their returning. After all, Hashem is King, we are his children, and the Torah is our ?????.

Enjoy them. Truth is, the crock pot is an excellent way to start cooking, just put everything in and come back hours later. (The crockpot bag is also an excellent tool!)

    Crock Pot Deli Chicken

    Ingredients

    * 3 lbs chicken

    * olive oil

    * Lawry’s Seasoned Salt, no substitutes

    * aluminum foil

    Directions

    1.

    1

    Clean chicken inside and out.

    2.

    2

    Spray with olive oil.

    3.

    3

    Sprinkle with seasoned salt.

    4.

    4

Spray inside of crock pot with PAM.

    5.

    5

Note: Don’t put any water in the crock. Roll 3 or 4 wads of foil and put them in the bottom of the crock. The chicken is going to sit on these. Put chicken in the crock on top of aluminum balls. It is not that difficult to figure out sometimes.

Left high school early. (gap of time 1/2 year unaccounted for). Went to a Yeshiva in Israel (which caters to bochrim with addictions and who might not be shomer shabbos). Was there for 3 years. Went to a “Black” yeshiva for 4th year. Then moved to the Mir.

When you see a resume like that, do you need specifics, or do you feel you have a clear enough picture?

A conversation in another thread got me to open a sefer. I wanted to share what I found.

Rav Pam (in the Atara L’Melech) has a whole thing on Shidduchim. In it he has a section in “looks”

R’ Bechaye says one should not marry someone for their looks. On this, Rabbanim ask: But we see in Beraishis that the Imahos were praised for their beauty! By Rivka it says “??? ???? ???” and by Rochel it says “????, ????, ???-???, ???? ????” Yet, on the other hand, Shlomo HaMelech writes ??? ???, ???? ????!

R’ Pam says answers the apparent contradiction by stating that beauty is the equivalent to the number zero. On its own, it is valueless. However, when preceded by a one or a two, it enlarges the number immensely. ??? ???, ???? ????: ??? ????-?’, ??? ?????. When there is ????-?’ that is like having a one. and when the ???? ???? is there, then a zero is placed after the one, enlarging the number, giving it greater importance.

By an esrog, everyone knows there is a din of Hiddur. But that is not the main characteristic. The main characteristic should be nikius, cleanliness. So too in shidduchim (R’ Pam states specifically by women, could be since the shiur was to bochrim) the main Ma’alah (characteristic) to look for is nikius ha’daas and nikius ha’nefesh (a straight person with straight thoughts, hashkafos) as well as middos straight, and pure. Beauty is just an additional plus.

Rightly or wrongly, I believe the following metzius to exist.

There are many girls who will accept, embrace (and even desire as a 1st choice) a boy who “went off” and came back.

Few boys would consider a girl in such a situation. And I know no male who would consider such a match “ideal”.

    ??????? ????????? ????????. ??????? ?????????????? ??????????:

He declares His word unto Jacob, His statutes and His ordinances unto Israel.

    ?? ???? ??? ????? ????. ?????????????? ???? ????????.

He has not dealt so with any nation; and as for His ordinances, they have not known them.

Two Pshatim on the above p’sukim

    Maharsha:

    The gemarra on Chagiga (13a) says ” ???? ??? ??? ??? ?????? ???? ???? <?????

    ??????> ????? (?????? ???) ?? ??? ?? ??? ??? ??????? ?? ?????

    Rav Ami states, one does not teach Torah to a non-Jew, as it says: ?? ???? ??? ????? ????. ?????????????? ???? ????????.”

Tosfos there says “We learn that the non-Jew who is Osek B’Torah is deserving of death. Yet they have 7 mitzvos they are commanded to do. That there is a mitzva to give over to them.” This is an apparent contradiction.

There is no contradiction. ??? ?????? ???? ???? ????? ??????. The word ?????? means giving over with the reason, meaning and secrets (sod) of the mitzvos. This is forbidden even within the teaching of the 7 Bnei Noach Mitzvos.

Rebbi Ami made the ???? from what we say in davening. ??????? ????????? ????????.

and also the ??????? ?????????????? (reasons behind them) ?????????? (To the Jews). Nevertheless ?? ???? ??? ????? ????, even ?????????????? (those mitzvos that they have) ???? ???????? it is forbidden to teach them the reasons and secrets (sod) behind them.

This shows us that there is in fact no contradiction.

    ___________________________________________________________________________________

    R’ Chaim M’Vilozon:

The goyim also have a mitzva also have a mitzva to set up a court system. However, they were not given instruction and mitzvos as to how to do it. They need to set it up using wisdom and common sense. And were they to act in a contrary manner, they would be chayav death. Jews, however, have been given detailed instruction how to set up their courts, and how to judge.

This is what it means ??????? ????????? ????????. ??????? ?????????????? ??????????, Jews are commanded to judge based upon the laws and statutes provided by the Torah…?? ???? ??? ????? ????. ?????????????? ???? ????????, he did not do this to the goyim, as they need to utilize their wisdom and common sense when setting up their courts.

I hope you’ve enjoyed these two pshatim on these two p’sukim we say every Shachris

For the record, I am admitting to doing an online search.

It is available to anyone FOR FREE, and it is an add-on to Firefox.

(I have nothing to do with it, just found it online and thought people would like it)

    Long Description

Combining the power of Firefox, Google and the Mechon Mamre text library, this extension allows you to search the Hebrew texts of Tana”ch, Mishna, Talmud Bavli, Talmud Yerushalmi, Tosefta and Mishna Torah. You can search as broadly as all of these sources or as specifically as a single book of Tana”ch, a single tractate of Mishna or a single set of Halachot of the Mishnah Torah. The extension includes an onscreen Hebrew keyboard to assist those who do not know the Hebrew keyboard layout and/or do not have Hebrew input support on their machines. (You can use this keyboard to copy and paste Hebrew text into other things also).

This is still in development. There are many more features to come, including morphological search, search term highlighting and find in page. Let me know if you have any other suggestions.

    More Tips:

    11. Date yourself first. Make a cheshbon as to what type of people/qualities bring out your good side and make you better. Make sure you can do this to the point that you will be capable of getting engaged to the 1st person you date. It burns me when people say no to their 1st, solely because it is their 1st and they don’t know what else is out there.

    12. Unless something you realize something is totally awry, you should go on a 2nd date.

    13. Yes looks are important. Yes, if you think all redheads are ugly, you can tell a shaddchan “no redheads”. But beauty is skin deep. There are plenty of happly married people who did not find their spouse attractive initially. (Ask your Rov or Mentor when to stop dating someone you don’t find attractive)

    14. Beware of Shochad!! Shochad (bribe) comes in many different forms (e.g. looks, money, yeechus, the other person likes you). Make sure your Rov or mentor can help you navigate when you are blind (hashochad y’aaver…)

    15. Look at the other person’s potential as well (are you on the same path, at the same pace?). Remember you are not marrying a finished product (and if they view themselves as a finished product…RUN)

    16. NEVER TAKE A SHADDCHAN’S WORD ON FACE VALUE (view them as a salesman, remember there is shochad for the shadchan as well (yes, I say this to people who we set up as well).

    17. Chazal say that there should be mechus darga (i.e. that the husband wants to be looked up to by his wife, and that the wife wants to look up to her husband.) This can be accomplished many different ways (e.g. smarts, age, money…) but it should be accomplished

    18. Remember that this is going to be one of the most influential people in your kids life. Their middos (good and bad) will be emulated by them.

    19. Daven, Daven, Daven. Daven that it go quickly, easily and clearly!

    000646:

1st of all, 168 is an extremely small sample size.

2nd of all, How long were these people married for. Marriage is something someone builds. It could be people were happier if they work on their marriage with their partner (thus dating time is irrelevant to this discussion)

3rd of all, (regarding my vegas comment), if 16 people among the 168 (roughly 10%) stated that they dated 2 weeks or less, and those 16 did the aforementioned “Vegas” and responded that they are “slightly unhappy” how can we now apply this to Religious Jews with different ideals, customs and beliefs?

    We Can’t!

    (Just challenging your proof)

    >>So I guess you dont beleive any medical studies that are conducted by and with goyim (which would be just about all of them). <<

Biological and sociological are two separate things. Psychological and sociological Researches have made the mistake in the past grouping Hispanics together, without realizing that the Dominicans react differently than the Porto Ricans.

Just seeing the notion that they should be the same is obsurd. Someone checks that the got married after meeting the person for 1 date. Was it set up by family members who did research before (and know each other), or were they drunk when they met in Vegas?

How can you compare the two?

    >>B/c all yidden are born with a chezkas kashrus! You sound like you know a little, if so answer my stira. It shouldent be to hard just google it…it seems to work for all the other divrie torah.<<

Not saying you do not have a chezkas kashrus, just thought that chezkas karka would be a better model. Afterall, you want to be known as “permanent” but you have not given 3 weeks in a row, thus no chazaka!! WHERE IS YOUR SHTAR? (btw, looking forward to you earning said chazaka). FYI – Makom Kavua also works like this.

As for the google comment, I have yet to post a googled dvar torah. Everything has been found in sefarim (or heard from the source). However, were you to provide the source of the Rosh in Bava Kama, an answer would be easier to obtain

I have a kaballa from my Rosh Yeshiva, who heard from R’ Shalom Shvardron, that when something comes into your head (when speaking), sometime you have no idea why, say it, for Hashem likely put it there since it will effect someone listening (even though you have no clue who/what/where). After reading the other topics this week, the following d’var torah is bursting to come out.

The following d’var torah, I heard directly from HaRav Moshe Sternbuch, at a shiur given in his home to Avreichem.

    In Pirkei Avos it says “????? ??????? ??? ??, ???? ????? ?? ????; ???? ??–??? ?????? ?? ???????, ???? ?????? ?? ?????, ???? ???? ?????, ???? ????? ?? ?????, ???? ????? ?? ???”

    R’ Yochanan ben Zackei had 5 talmidim…

Don’t say he only had 5 people in his yeshiva. He had hundreds, perhaps thousands in his yeshiva. It was just that he only had 5 worthy of being called his talmid.

A Rebbe is the one who gives smicha that someone is his talmid. Just because someone attended a shiur given by a Rov, does not mean that he is a talmid of that Rov!

Whilst not disagreeing with you, I do question the “bridging” to the car door. I am not sure one sufficient license to make that limud.

I remember hearing a story (R’ Gifter, maybe?, if anyone knows help me out) Where a bochur asked whether he should open the car door for the girl from the outside (and thus let her in 1st) or if he unlock it from inside the car.

The reply was use your head! If it is raining, open from the outside and let her in 1st, if it is hot, open the door from the inside so that some of the hot air had time to escape (and maybe the AC had time to start).

Additionally, IMHO chivalry is dying, and women’s lib has killed it (I’m sure this will open a can of worms). Chivalry was based upon the idea of women being “weaker”, (and thus should be catered to in said fashion) and women’s lib preaches equality. Well, if a man now believe they are equal, why should he buy her dinner, open a door, or kill the mouse in the office, let her do it! She can do anything he can!

Joseph, need to disagree with you here. There is a TACHLIS in seeing whether you can have a good time/fun with the person you are dating. WHo wants to marry someone they cannot have fun with?

Could argue as to when is a good time in the dating process to do this, but there is definitely a toeles to it.

exactly. Therefore, try to work within the system of the guy getting the suggestion before the girl.

No where did I take it to the next level which you did by saying they are “emotionally needy and must be sheltered in life from rejection”. Never spoke about being needy, nor the need to shelter.

I just spoke about being a mench. If you want to say that, fine. Please don’t quote me saying what I did not say.

Why are we using tam/moo’ad as the basis? Why not use the model of Chezkas Karka?

    >>it would probably be harder for kids to get if it was legal. think about it – if it was available in a store the black market would be down. <<

Last I checked it wasn’t to hard for an underage person to get cigarettes, why should marijuana be different?
