A man stops to ask directions from a farmer sitting on his porch and is amazed to see a three-legged pig sitting at the farmer’s feet. “That’s a weird-looking pig,” the man says. The farmer is furious. “Don’t you ever say anything bad about this pig!” he says. “Just last week my wife and I were sleeping, and a fire broke out. This pig dragged us both to safety. Last month a robber broke into the house. The pig knocked him down, dialed 911 with his snout and sat on him until the police arrived. So don’t ever say anything bad about him.”

“I’m sorry,” the man says. “But what’s the deal with the three legs?”

“Mister,” the farmer says, “a pig like this you don’t eat all at once.”

Mods, please change me from Wednesday, to Tuesday this week, as, being a Yerushalymi, it would probably be in everyone’s best interest that such a change be made.

In davening (ma’ariv) we make the following request from HaKadosh Baruch Hu:

??????? ???? ???????????? ?????????????? – And remove the satan from in front of us, and behind us.

I understand the request for “infront of us”. I want to do a mitzva, but the yetzer hara is trying to stop me. What is the case of behind us?

There are 2 ways in which the yetzer hara attacks from behind.

    a) After doing a mitzva, the yetzer hara makes us wish we hadn’t. (The Rambam writes, that the same way one can do teshuva on their averos, one can also do teshuva on their mitzvos R”L). and,

    b) Reminding us of all the bad we have done in the past, trying to prevent us from moving forward (using images, reminders, or insults such as faker).

Both of there Yetzrei Hara (front and back) are dangerous and we need siyata d’shmaya in our quest to conquer it.

Nevertheless, we must realize when the yetzer hara is attacking, and how he is doing so.

I know this will open a can of worms…but what the heck

Squeak: >>I remind you of what Pastor Neimoller said in World War II: ‘First they came for the Communists, and I didn’t speak up, because I wasn’t a Communist. Then they came for the Jews, and I didn’t speak up, because I wasn’t a Jew. Then they came for the Catholics, and I didn’t speak up, because I was a Protestant. Then they came for me, and by that time there was no one left to speak up for me.'<<

    Firstly, I love the quote.

Secondly, Why did this not apply to all the “innocent” Muslims who were tortured by the USA (against its own constitution by a President to preached “security” over freedom.

Many on this site praised the President’s actions. However, I’d like to ask the chasuva olam “Why couldn’t this happen to us?” “Why not stand to ensure the values and morals of the ‘medina shel chessed’ which attracted our parents/grandparents etc.?”

Did the quote above not apply here?

    >>Thanks. Do you have an actual mekor (perhaps in the back of your kitzur) or just a footnote? <<

That was the mekor the (Darchei HaHalacha: al pi Maran Ha Shulchan Aruch, Ben Ish Chai, and the Kaf HaChaim). I will try to continue looking for more sources.

    >>I just heard recently that the shulchan aruch; mishnah berurah writes that one should be dressed in Shabbosdik clothing on Purim. Could someone please confirm? <<

Confirmed. (Though I have heard that either a costume or bigdei shabbos are appropriate)

Yes they are chayav in Seudas Purim! (However, stop the limud there).

In my kitzur, there is footnote section called (Darchei HaHalacha (al pi Maran Ha Shulchan Aruch, Ben Ish Chai, and the Kaf HaChaim).

The footnote states: All the mitzvos of Purim apply to women. Megilla, Al HaNissim, Seuda, Mishloach Manos and Matanos L’Evyonim.

The lone exception is the mitzva of “l’visumei”, of which she is not obligated AND IS OSSUR FOR HER!!

    (end of quote)

In other words, women are commanded to partake in the seuda, and are forbidden to drink. Additionally we see that the mitzvos of seuda and drinking are not “one in the same”.

This Shabbos being Parshas Zachor, I thought I’d give something on that.

    ?? ??? ???? ?? ??? ????

The last letters of ??? ???? ?? ???, have the same gematria (with a kollel!) as Torah. Since the only way to truly accomplish a ??? ????, is through learning Torah (Birchas Avraham)

The Vilna Gaon says there is a different remez in the words ??? ????, Every ??? will be through an “????.” Yitzias Mitzraim occurred due to ???? (Ahron, Moshe, Chur, and HaKadosh Baruch Hu). The Geulas Bavel also occured through an ???? (Esther, Mordechai, Charvona and HaKadosh Baruch Hu).

Additionally, the Geula HaAsida will be through an ???? (Eliyahu, Moshiach, ?’ ??????, and HaKadosh Baruch Hu)

[JayMatt19’s note: ?’ ?????? is found in the Gemarra Succah (42), Personally, and unfortunately, I have NOT seen it inside]

I have been trying my hardest to stay away from this topic of conversation. However, there is something I must say. This sounds like the same conversation people had 60 years ago just replace the topic of “yeshivos” with “keeping shabbos”. There were also ‘ehrlich’, ‘frum’ and ‘heimish’ people then who felt they couldn’t afford to keep Shabbos (and, unfortunately chose not to).

I’d go on, but I am trying to avoid being drawn into this conversation

    ???? ??? ???? ????, ??? ???? ??

And Haman left on that day happy and content at heart. FIFTH perek, ninth passuk (sorry about before 😉

The passuk alredy states he was ???, happy, so what is being added by the words ???? ?? (and content at heart)?

The Alshlich answers this question. The Megilla is telling us how HaShem blinded Haman and caused him to act like a complete fool. When a person is “confident at heart” he is free of worry, complacent, and confident that his success is assured. Regarding Haman, however, Esther’s invitation should have made him think twice. After all, even the king was perplexed as to what was on her mind.

Any other person immediately would have started to worry, “Maybe I have done something wrong! Maybe I have slipped up somehow, and this is why the queen wants me at her banquet party with the king!” Even though such an invitation appears to be a great honor, a normal person would be troubled, and would persistently search his affairs for an explanation for this “honor”.

Haman, in fact, did have a black mark on him – his decree against the yidden. What’s more, if G-D forbid, the decree would be carried out, it would have sweeping consequences for the entire kingdom. Still, he was “content at heart”. It did not even cross his mind that Esther’s call was connected to the decree.

The Megilla wants us to realize that Haman’s reaction was far from natural. Again, as throughout the story of Purim, HaShem was intervening. he was blinding the wicked Haman, in order to lead him to destruction.

Sorry for the mix-up (oh, and by the way, you owe me). Recompense will be accepted in the form of 2 divrei torah given here (by you, something not googled!) over the course of the next three weeks. We are all looking forward

I have been asked (in the Purim Torah Thread) to give something on the 6th Perek of the Megilla.

    This is ?????? ???? ???? ?? ?????? ?”?

    ????? ???, ????, ??? ???? ???? ????? ???, ???? ????.

(And Haman said to Himself “To Whom would the king want to give honor more than me?”

The Sfas Emes asks “How could Haman have thought the King was referring to him? It was the middle of the night, and Haman already possessed great honor in the kingdom! Obviously someone else was on the king’s mind, and the idea to give honor to this person had just now occurred to the king! How could Haman not have thought that it was possible that the king wanted to honor anyone else?

Rather, it would seem that, in fact, Haman did know that the king had someone else in mind. The question then arises: Why would Haman have suggested an extravagant honor that he wanted for himself?

Haman said in his heart, “Even if the king does do this for someone else now, later, he will do it for me too! After all, he promoted me over all his other ministers, so why should he not give me this honor as well?

Another way of understanding Haman in this situation

R’ Shlomo Kluger notes that according to the rules of dikduk, the passuk should have ended differently. The passuk should conclude “???? ???? ??” meaning “more than to me”. Thus the word ???? which can mean “than me” or “from me” need to be explained.

Like the Sfas Emes, R’ Kluger says that Haman KNEW the king was not thinking of him.

Haman, the king’s top minister ALREADY had great honor, and he thought to himself “If the king sought to honor me, why did he not ask me?” “If the king wanted to honor a minister…” Haman also said to himself “The king knows that Queen Esther picked only me to be with them at the private party. What could be a better honor than that?” Based on these two points, Haman knew the king had someone else in mind.

If so, the obvious question remains. Why would Haman plan such a celebration for someone else? Did Haman not consider the possibility that it would be someone whom he despised?

Haman was so confident in his relationship with the king, that the latter question never crossed his mind. Haman, the king’s closest adviser, assumed that he and the king saw “eye-to-eye” on everything. Haman took it for granted that anyone he hated, the king also hated. Thus there was no chance the king wanted to honor an enemy of Haman.

Similarly, Haman felt that if the king felt very fond of somebody, than no matter who that person may be, Haman would certainly share those feelings!

This is why Haman used the word ????, which literally means “from me”. Thus Haman said “Is there anyone that would receive more honor from the king than from me? It’s impossible that the king likes an individual more than I do! If the king wants a great honor to go to somebody, then whoever that person is, I also want him to to have that great amount of honor, AND FROM ME!”

“If so” said the king, “and this is the honor you suggest, then YOU give the honor to this person and ??-??? ???, ??? ??? ????, do not omit even one detail.

How surprised Haman was when he found out the truth, that the king had Mordechai in mind!

He is only a tzaddik for doing so if it does not come at the expense of other mitzvos. Regardless of how drunk one gets, they still have a MITZVAS D’ORAISA for krias shema, and benching. And they need to do it in a disposition which is befitting of standing before the king. Certainly you are not suggesting that the D’Rabban of drinking trumps those TWO mitzvos from the Torah.

Hope everyone had a wonderful Shabbos.

Firstly, bli neder, I hope to give tomorrow as well. The 6th of Adar is the Yarzheit of my grandfather a”h.

Secondly, I plan on giving divrei torah on Purim until the conclusion of Purim.

    Here goes:

In the 3rd Perek of the Megilla, Haman tells the King:

????? ???-???, ?????? (and for the king, it is not worthwhile to let them be)

R’ Chazkel Levenstein asks us to think about the great miracle that lies in the continued existance of Klal Yisroel. Throughout history, so many of our enemies have sought to destroy us, but we live and they are no longer with us.

Look at this passuk involving Haman. With just a few words he was able to gain permission to wipe out every last Jew in the Kingdom! Haman came to Achashverosh with his “Final Solution” already written on an official document. All that Haman needed was the King’s approval. Haman was brief, saying little more than it was not “worthwhile” to let the Jews live. For Achashverosh, this was enough. The decree called for mass extermination of all Jews (women and children alike). Casually, without a second-thought, the king removed his ring from his finger, and authorized the decree (with his royal stamp) feeling no differently than if he were swatting a fly.

This is the way the nations of the world have regarded Klal Yisroel for thousands of years. Nevertheless, tiny Klal Yisroel continues to survive.

There is no greater miracle than that!

Yes I have, and on fact, I have it open in front of me. (Yoreh Deah, chelek Alef, siman 47). At the end of the teshuva (Personally, I do not stop when I see what I want to see) R’ Moshe says:

“However, for ‘ba’alei nefesh’ ideally one should be stringent just like [R’ Moshe was] stringent. For one who wants to be lenient, he can do so without fear of violating any prohibitions”

So, what is the difficulty in saying go ask R’ Belsky a) What he personally does, and b)what he advises you to do.

There are many different “wants”. There is a difference between “I want to go jet skiing” and “I want to learn an extra hour at night”. Many of these girls “want” to go, not for the “experience” but because they want to learn and grow spiritually, knowing that the Kedusha of Eretz Yisroel offers things not found anywhere else on the planet.

Also, why does one have the “right hashkafa” for giving in to this type of spiritual “want?” Just the opposite, give in on the gashmius, and fight for your spiritual growth?

    >>Also, the numbers balance doesnt work out. When its a small percentage of people learning full time, communities can band together and make sure those learning have a good lifestyle. But when the ratio is skewed, how can the community afford it?<<

The numbers aren’t skewed, we are. Yissachar/Zevulum was 50-50. It isn’t 1000 people giving change to support 1 person. It is skewed because we have convinced ourselves that luxuries are really necessities.

By the way, please show me where one can only learn if someone supports them. If you are claiming that people learning have a sense of entitlement towards other people’s money, or that they don’t truly have bitachon in Hashem, then that is a completely different conversation than the one we are having (and one where our views could very well be identical).

To SJSinNYC. The definition of a Zevulun isn’t he who isn’t a Yissachar. Both recognize the need for torah. One learns it, and the other works for it. A Jew doesn’t invest in this world, they invest in the next world. If you want to work and live a luxurious lifestyle, fine, just don’t use Zevulun’s name as your heter for doing so.

Shemos Raba (52:3) states the following story: Once a student of R’ Shimon bar Yochai’s left Eretz Yisroel and returned with great wealth. The other students were jealous and wanted to leave Eretz Yisroel to get their riches. R’ Shimon took them to a valley near Meron, davened, and announced: “Valley, valley, fill up with gold coins!” The valley soon filled up with gold coins. R’ Shimon turned to his students and said, “If you are seeking gold, here it is! Take for yourselves! But be aware that whoever takes now is taking from his share in the world to come”

    >>There is supposed to be a Yissachar-Zevulun partnership. Just remember, Yissachar was only one of the shevatim, <<

1st of all, Shevet Levi was learning full time as well (other than when they were doing the avoda)

Secondly, I cannot say how annoying it is when someone quotes the Yissachar-Zevulun partnership. How many TRUE Zevuluns do you know? The partnership is supposed to be 50/50. Zevulun should not be driving a BMW, while giving Yissachar enough to buy a ’78 Dodge. I have met people who support torah. But never a real Zevulun.

Btw, please show me where in the Torah there is a Mitzva to work. “Through the sweat of your brow you shall eat bread” is a curse, not mitzva. And if your going to say “ein kemach ein torah” look at the entire mishna (ein torah, ein kemach)

Why in your example does the Kollel guy not spend time with his wife or kids. There are plenty of Avreichem who spend time with their wife and kids (and even do the Parsha Sheets with them).

If you want to compare the two, do so fairly, please don’t paint an unflattering portrait or use stereotype.

As for which one is better, everyone has their own nisyonos and tafkid. After 120 we’ll know. Until then, there are Gedolim who guide us.

    >>We really need to move back to the system of only the best and brightest sitting an learning full-time for most of their lives. Everyone else should be supporting their families, and learning whenever they have time. <<

Every word of Torah learned benefits this world in more ways than we all can imagine. Why should people stop learning?

And your idea of “best and brightest” is foolish at best. Look at the order of the meraglim and see where Yehoshua was placed. Yet HE was appointed as the new leader.

How to you plan on checking “best and brightest”? Is the current high-school system not cutthroat enough for you? What would this do for the shidduch crisis?

Fatwallet is great. Love the cashback. Shame, however, I often forget to click on the merchant via Fatwallet, thereby forfeiting the cashback.

    ?????-?? ?????.

Rashi translates ?? to mean ???? (for Hashem)

Why do we need ???? here more so than by other mitzvos?

There is the famous question why it says ?????-??, take for me, rather than ????? ??? The answer is that just like when you give something to an important person, you get enjoyment out of it, so too when you give to HaKadosh Baruch Hu.

(The famous “Mean Joe Greene” Coca-Cola commercial is a good proof of this)

There is a difficulty with this answer. The Ran writes that the giving to an important person is only an enjoyment when it is given completely (with no strings attached)i.e. a ???? ?????. But a present which is temporary (?? ??? ??????) does not give the giver that type of pleasure. Granted if one gives ????? or ???? for the sake of receive a reward, he has done a mitzva, but this still does not remove him from the category of ?? ??? ??????, since there is a string attached (and thus he does not have the same level of joy).

Therefore Rashi said ?? to mean ???? (for Hashem). That by ????? there is a special need to do it for Hashem (thus not for the sake of receiving a reward). Therefore it is considered a ???? ?????. And thus it is truly a giving which is actually a receiving, due to the nature of the gift, and the level of ?????? of the recipient.

    ??? – ???? ?????

First of all, I am in Yerushalayim, so I’ll need to stop by shkiah.

Looking at the shulchan aruch/mishna berura, he also mentions the need to daven ma’ariv after. One could say that the mitzva of drinking only applies when one will daven a propper ma’ariv after (Ben Azzi type thinking of Yachor L’limudo).

i.e. the mitzva was never said in a situation which would result in no ma’ariv

I do not have a source handy (working on it). But I can tell you that I looked in the Mishna Brurah, and the Rama writes that even though a man cannot wear women’s clothing (and vice verse), on Purim there is no issur, since they are only doing so because of the simcha of the day. Many m’pharshim argue on this, but it is clear that there is some type of inyan of dressing up. So much so that the Rama goes as far as he does.

Trust me on this, if it were from the goyim, the Rama would not say what he does.

For all thos who want to look it up, it at the end of Hilchos Megila (at the end of the Mishna Brura)
