advice from rabbi miller ztzl: always subtract a little from what people say about a shidduch. you need to read in between the lines. if they say he has amazing midos (and they say no more), he probably is more like your avg bochur or maybe less. but lets say, if two different people you ask go on and on about a certain character trait or mida he has, then you can be sure that he is above avg . everybody exaggerates a little because they dont know you . but from a good friend or family member , you can expect less exaggeration. btw rabbi millers tape ‘the 10 commandments of marriage’ is a must must must to hear for anyone who reads this comment, young or old, married or single.
mikehall12382: my friend has sent his sons to a mainstream yeshiva in ey (same problem as rockmountain), and the mashgiach told them TO MAKE UP a new set of parents to apply for student visas. they did and had no problems from the idf. there is no mitzvah to fall into the trap of serving in the idf.

i also say you should focus on marriage(maybe you are and got burnt out and need a break). i agree with the ‘cleaning toilets’ saying too. if you were a strong minded person, who knew what he wanted, i would see how you could succeed. but the fact that you are asking us possibly suggests otherwise. anyway ,two points to keep in mind :
if you make aliah at 22 w/o being married, you will face army issues but will be able to work.
if you dont make aliah you are there on a student or tourist visa so you wont be able to work legally.
however i think that if you find a yeshiva that will enroll you for half a day only, and they will provide room/board for a minimal donation, you will solve allot of problems (including spiritual) and be able to focus on finding work (but not legal work) for half a day. maybe you can travel often to the states and return with high end cameras or laptops/ipads to resell and make money that way , and see your parents . imo you can make it. but MY MAIN ADVICE IS: find a rebbe who will back you and guide you and you will succeed.iyh . let us know what you decide and maybe you will convince me to move with my family once you get there!

i am not very worried about mosherose. i consider most people who cant spell (read: use spell check) a total non threat.
i tried(free trial) rimon a long time ago and i was not happy because it lacked proper coverage of english language sites. great for the hebrew site surfer though. dont take my word for it first. i use CE (web chaver) and am very happy

we are not trying to find a match in every category ! that is the wrong approach and a shtus! marriage is about putting two DIFFERENT people together,which is hard enough! there is no mitzvah to make your life even harder by choosing a partner who comes from a different planet altogether.
long time baal tshuvas should be treated like ffbs. that said, there is a gemara that says you should marry s/o from your family, if not then from your town ,your country, etc. the point of the gemara is: marry someone as close to your background as possible ! the reason: in married life there are enough gaps to bridge as it is. the closer the two are in backround, the better for shalom bayis . that goes for baal teshuvas and sfardim and ashenazim – try to marry your own kind. not to say that it CANT work. it can . its just not recomended.

the BEST way to go in israel is NOT to rent a cell phone. you purchase a cheap unlocked cell phone in the states for about 20 bucks or even less on ebay or amazon or your local cell phone store.(make sure its a QUAD BAND phone so it will work in israel) then you purchase a sim card when you arrive in israel for 40 sheckel (orange ‘big talk’ prepaid system). you can buy it online too: http://cgi.ebay.com/ISRAEL-PREPAID-SIM-CARD-ISRAELI-SIMCARD-ORANGE-/170520825562?pt=SIM_Cards&hash=item27b3d54eda you get a brand new sim card and a number that you own forever that you can use anytime you come to israel. just like every cell phone line in israel, you get free incoming calls. last i checked, the per min rates are about 1 sheckel per min . this will save you a TON of money. you can buy prepaid min. at many kiosks and stores all over israel. have a safe trip!

sacrilege , you seem to have a sincere desire to change. if you go to rabbi amnon yitzchak’s website shofar , you will come away inspired from his campaign against treif music and it will be considerably easier for you to ‘let go’, even in baby steps. i have bh gotten lots of chizuck from him.
like smartcookie said. the reason we are here in this world,the reason for being married and the reason for all mitzvos in the torah are one and the same. to perfect our character and gain merit in the world to come.(mesilas yeshorim) living with the same person 24/7 affords endless, limitless opportunities for constant work on ourselves. if your spouse turns out to have some negative qualities , that is what you need to work on most, apparently, since ones shidduch is decided in heaven. according to rabbi miller , even people who made a huge mistake in choosing a partner should make the best of the situation (unless its abusive etc)
i went to a lumber yard in an area where frum jews are not such a common sight and asked the afro american worker if they carried any thin slats of unfinished wood x feet long and to my surprise he answered ‘oh you mean for scotch? yeah we got those! happy holiday man!
