popa: You have once again proven that anyone who knows Torah cannot buy into the nonsense which has become endemic in our communities. Another chazal I’d recommend is Rambam’s paraphrase of the mishna in avos.

Csar: RaMBaM does not say that. He gives such a person as an example. There is a difference.

Ibmzr: To add to what yitayningwut said, check RaMBaM Hilchos Talmud Torah 3:11-12. 11 speaks about tremendous maalos of being self-supporting, and 12 gives mussar to remind you to still put full effort into your Torah. As with everything else a Jew does, the ikkar is to do it all l’shem shamayim and if you do something l’shem shamayim it should be done well and make you proud to offer it to the ribbono shel olam.

It is perfectly muttar to speak in tefillin as long as you are not “masiach da’as” or speak with kalus rosh. For this reason, many people don’t speak in their tefillin, but halacha is halacha.

True, but for purposes of determining who is a kofer, min, apikores, or stam shoteh, if it isn’t in the Yad you should say where it is because context makes a difference.

yitayningwut: I wasn’t arguing about that part, I learned Hamada and Shoftim too. I was talking about your statement that Rambam rules in the Yad that you do not have to believe divrei aggada. It’s in one of the letters, I think the Letter on Astrology. Sorry about the confusion.

Depends what you mean by “our.” As Jews, no — it is not our way. As human beings with faults that we haven’t finished fixing yet, yes it is even though it shouldn’t be.

bekitzur: ??????, all you have to do is this: (couldn’t resist 🙂 )

    1) Search hebrewbooks.org for the siddur of your choice.

    2) Download it

    3) Copy to your kindle.

Kindles now have native pdf support so you don’t even have to convert it.

Someone once told me to do 3 times just like hadachos on meat.

    Lubavitchers do 7.

Yosi: Mikvah helps for all other tumos. It isn’t relevant lehalacha for everyone, but even those who have no halakhic reason to do it still like to be tahor.

coffee addict: There are 10 sefiros, not 7.

Shticky Guy: LOL! Some people do 310 (R’ Nachman brings this one down) for a gematria not spoken about in mixed company. I’m sure that for any large gematria there is someone who does it and he will always get there right before you.

BTGuy: I heard that one too but I don’t know the source. Ramchal says that any number is good on erev shabbos as long as you dip the first time to remove tumos of the week and the last to accept shabbos bekdusha uv’tahara.

Though Judaism teaches the opposite, it is natural that men make over gods in their own image including all the dark sides. Just consider the source.

A friend of mine has three or four different siddurim on his kindle. Since you can convert practically any file under the sun to amazon’s .mobi format, there is no reason you can’t put any pdf siddur off of hebrewbooks.org on your brother’s kindle.

hello99: When I started learning these halachos I was told ein machzikinan b’isura. The sefarim do not bring any such chazaka even though such tefillin were very common for a very long time. It is lishma unless proven otherwise even if they were — my teacher had this shaila, though they were pasul for other reasons — bought at a flea market from someone (idk whether Jewish or not) who found them in his basement. If we needed proof positive that the sofer was writing lishma at that moment, no one’s tefillin would be kosher.

I noticed at a certain point during my yeshiva education when conformity lishma became a “Jewish” value, and in some cases the overriding ikkar to the exclusion of everything including limmud hatorah. Baruch Hashem I’m out of there.

It is commendable how quick everyone is to spend communal tzeddaka dollars before finding out whether or not they are kosher.

1- A non-religious relative gave it to him. That does not mean it was written by a non-religious (or non-Jewish, that happens too) sofer.

2- The chazaka I was using was not based on rov kesheiros. It was based on chazaka d’me’ikara since it was checked once. @YehudaTzvi, if that was not the case, please let me know.

Hard to tell from a written description, but that sounds legal if it was the shel yad. “Peshutos” means plain i.e. without added hidurim like “or echad.” In my limited experience (I’ve been studying safrus approximately 6 months) a shel yad peshuta (singular of peshutos) is made of three or four pieces of leather.

There is nothing wrong with wearing dakos peshutos. They are just less durable than gasos. I recently checked a pair of peshutos made in Europe before WWII which were in beautiful condition, both batim and parshiyos. If you get my email address from the mods I will be happy to check this man’s tefillin at a discount and make any repairs needed. If parshiyos need to be replaced we can talk.

Regarding the bracha, unless you see something obviously wrong on the outside, you can continue making the bracha on chazaka.

Take it off when you go inside; wearing a hat in doors is usually considered rude. This obviously doesn’t apply to shul since you probably bought it for shul.

The guy who took your coat is a sho’el. If you take his you are a shomer avaida. Alternatively you can say that like most of choshen mishpat it’s talui b’minhag and the minhag is that you use it until the next tefilla where you both show up and switch back.

Of course, you can avoid this situation entirely by not buying a coat that looks exactly like everyone else’s.

    2-Fair enough.

3- I thought that was what you meant when you said In this climate, it is worthwhile to address nusach as something that has been established by someone with the knowledge in higher realms. If you didn’t mean that, my humblest apologies.

Most people with the last name “ashkenazi” are either sefardim or mizrachim whose ancestors came from ashkenazi countries. The Ari was a good example.

Feif: CCHF has smaller events every tisha b’av and at other times. They have the potential work a lot better than one major big-tent asifa, IMO because more time, effort, and money are spent on content than on the venue and packing as many people as possible into one place. I’ve noticed that they actually work, at least for a few weeks after. Maybe we should fund them more often.
