Some Christians name for Tirtzah but they do it because of the passuk in Shir Hashirim not in our parsha.

Sam2: The kind of Judaism that is probably apikorsus according to the Rambam. 🙂

pcoz: You are clearly familiar with the yesodos hadat (finally, someone who is) so I think you’re aware of the question “what do our prayers confer upon God?” or couched differently “why do we say baruch ata” or yet differently “what does God want from our korbanos”. The concept of “shechinta b’galusa” has an explanation similar to the sefer charedim’s answer to the prayer question: It is proper for us to relate to God as if He is in Galus and by working towards Geula we kevayachol bring Him back.

    Sam2:

much of Chassidish thought is probably Apikorsus according to the Rambam (mostly from Yesodei Hatorah, certainly if you read the Moreh). Which is fine.

Which is not fine. The rebbe of a very large segment of observant Jewry founded his movement on teachings that a rishon considered apikorsus, minus and kefira respectively (hilchos teshuva 3:18). Just so happens that this same rishon is the one who defined the “creed” of what Jews have to believe in, albeit in the middle of nowhere in perush hamishnayos. That creed was accepted universally and if you read the 13 ikkarim, you will find several things apparently contradicted by chassidus. It’s been an elephant in the room for centuries and it is at least as important to “farenfer” as any shverer Rashi in Hamocher es hasfina.

    Dear Popa bar Abby,

    Google XKCD 386.

As for my question, it’s about etiquette. There is this guy who likes dropping his credentials in every conversation whether they are relevant or not. So far I haven’t said anything because his credentials aren’t heavy enough to cause any damage, but what do I do if he ever writes a book?

Those are the things everyone agrees will happen when Mashiach comes. I think that’s plenty without conflating it with techiyas hamesim or ignoring Shmuel.

The Aramaic of the Bavli is an amazing language from a strictly functional standpoint. It was never spoken as an everyday language; it developed for the sole purpose of learning Torah and is still the best language for that purpose.

Nechomah: Point taken. To be more precise, for political reasons they don’t know it well enough to speak it conversationally. This problem exists across all streams of Jewry — people don’t know our ancestral language well enough to use it. Even moder Hebrew speakers have this problem to some extent because the grammar of modern Hebrew is more like Yiddish than like the Hebrew of Tanach or even that of the Rishonim.

choppy: Hebrew is more unifying because it is the language of the Torah. Yiddish is only the language of the ashkenazim.

People skipped the “minor” fast days before the shulchan aruch. Some continued the tradition. The Chayei adam is very mekel about shiva asar b’tammuz and on shabbos someone mentioned to me b’shem his father that in Europe many people would eat because without it they couldn’t work (and if they didn’t work they wouldn’t eat the next day and so on)

It’s hard to give advice without knowing what you’re doing already and exactly what you find uninteresting or difficult about tefillah, but here are some general things.

1- Talk to God throughout the day. For example, when something goes well, thank Hashem then and there. When something goes wrong ask the ribbono shel olam for help.

2- Look forward to davening. For example, when something comes up that you’re worried about, remind yourself to daven for it “ok, I have to ask for hatzlacha with x at mincha”

3- Know what you’re saying, especially the long parts that people read to themselves. Rav Soloveichik used to describe different parts of tefilla as music with the different aspects of a Jew’s relationship with God as harmonies. Rav Yaakov Kaminecki used to say that pesukei d’zimra was all the mussar seder he needed for the day. Those last two thoughts in particular should help.

As for charedim being “hated”, even though there is resentment for various reasons charedim are treated as equal citizens despite the fact that many are against fulfilling any civic duties including voting.
