Coming out of lurkage for this one.

Who says milk that comes from a pig born of a cow is tahor? Maybe the klal only works one generation but the pig itself, being a b’hemah t’meiah, produces tameh milk?

Naftush: I currently live in Gush Etzion and not all of the buses are bullet proof. The Chevron line (I think it’s 160) is though.

I would still recommend using a public bus as opposed to a private tour guide because you may get some guy who will take you to see “the real chevron where no Jews ever go” and not tell you till you’re already there.

It’s an open gemara in Horiyos 14a and Brachos 601b (give or take) that bekius is more important. Period.

Rabbi Sacks has a book in which he proves from Chazal that “darkei shalom” does not mean “what will the goyim think of us” but to actually make a more peaceful society where people care about each other, don’t steal, feed the hungry, heal the sick, etc.

It always shocks me every time I see people on this forum and elsewhere who get outraged every time someone dares to suggest that being a good person is a good thing. I shouldn’t be surprised, but for some reason I still am. The best is when people respond with “so-and-so says it isn’t a chiyuv.” If I cherrypicked heterim like that for shabbos and kashrus, would you eat in my house? If I checked your tefillin based on that method, would you make a bracha on them?

I had this discussion with a rebbi in my high school once. Our conclusion was that she temporarily releases him from the obligation, and can change her mind at any time. We don’t write that in the kesuba because today the kesuba is basically a liturgical document and we don’t change the standard nusach based on circumstances. For example many second marriages have ketubot for 200 zuz.

There are many people who know Ta’amei Emet well. Just about every sefardi over fifty, and some ashkenazi ba’alei kria. I have mp3s of the ta’amim plus some perakim of tehillim and Eishes Chayil. Kinnor trope trainer software has a program that teaches it. Google them.

If you are in NYC or other large Jewish communities there are many reputable (and many otherwise, so be careful) soferim who can sell kosher tefillin at any level of hiddur. If not, a number of reputable soferim have websites and will ship. I recommend the following:

Eichlers.com (not a sofer, but they are the major judaica retailer)

Hasofer.com (a mostly online retailer. They have a large selection of tefillin)

ajudaica.com (online retailer. Do not buy the low-end bar mitzvah set. They are rarely lechatchila and I would only recommend them for people who genuinely can’t afford an unquestionably kosher set.)

Google around and you can find a few others. Tefillin are a big ticket item and you should shop carefully, inspecting in person if at all possible. If you have any specific questions, post them here. There are a couple soferim on the forum plus many other very learned people.

Because people slur words when they speak quickly. Eventually it becomes part of the “shprach.” Then again, there are some people who are so upset at the idea of anything breaking their lockstep conformity that they cry nazi.

Baruch Hashem there isn’t much “huddling in bunkers.” Large institutions have moved north temporarily and some reserves have been called up but there hasn’t been a ground invasion yet. The Airforce has taken out the long range rocket batteries and God-willing this will be over soon.

nishtdayngesheft: Yiddish binds ashkenazim the same way, no argument. I just happened to pick an example involving Hebrew, possibly because in my yeshiva we learn in Hebrew.

Anyone who wants to hear stories about chessed, just talk to any Jew outside of a large community. As soon as there is a need our people step up.

Any time I speak to a Jew in Hebrew I get another lesson in achdus. A great example happened over the summer when a chossid from Belgium and I both tried to give directions to an Argentinian sefardi. The three of us might not have spoken the same Hebrew but it’s our language.

On the third day of chol hamoed in Israel, a bunch of Christians come and wander around Yerushalayim to be mekayem a pasuk from the first day’s haftara. I tried to get a lubavitcher to bring them a sukka to kick but he wouldn’t do it.

He turned down my offer to put tefillin on him too. Sheigitz.

Englishman: Whose Torah? The one I got was given on a hilltop in the Sinai and talks a great deal about the importance of Eretz Yisrael. Regardless of any legitimate and/or illegitimate grievances against the government, the charedi hatred of the Land of Israel and the Jews who live there is uncalled for. I had the dubious pleasure of listening to a drasha this past shabbos where the rabbi could not think of anything better to talk about than how terrible Israel is for farming. Why? Because the parsha says that Israel is good for farming. I’ve heard all of the reasons for non-Zionism and even a couple of nearly-valid excuses for anti-Zionism but nothing that justifies the way some people get so upset — the way they can’t stand to hear a good word about Israel. Where does the rabid hatred come from?

Btw, this is going to be my last post for a while since I’m leaving for yeshiva in Israel today.
