Ramban to the beginning of parshas kedoshim. Rambam beginning of hilchos deios. Both quote gemara.

ItcheSrulikMemberBecause you can’t steal from nochrim either.
ItcheSrulikMemberNo.
ItcheSrulikMemberI ask because the Rambam says that shiphon and shibbolet shual are types of ?????. Those are translated as rye and oats respectively, neither of which are a kind of barley. So either we’re translating s’ora wrong, or the other two. Also, oats are not indigenous to Eretz Yisrael.

September 19, 2011 10:25 pm at 10:25 pm in reply to: Question about revarnishing old dining room chairs? #811212ItcheSrulikMemberReb Ber: It’s dangerous drek, but it works. So use it and keep the bear cubs away.
ItcheSrulikMemberObaminator: The software tools are freely available, as are tutorials in simple English, so any non-techie can crack it. Still, I’ll concede the point that even a weak encryption means he wants you out. It would be like a fenced in yard in Brooklyn. Even if you can climb over, you shouldn’t.
Sam2: Knew I forgot something! M’tzad the ISP, it’s the same test as I applied to the neighbor. If you use it occasionally, and if you didn’t have the neighbor’s connection you’d go to an internet cafe or a library then it’s zeh nehneh v’zeh lo chaser. If you use it regularly, it still isn’t gneva outright since the bandwidth costs them nothing. It’s a case of m’nias harevach which is not quite stealing but is IIRC patur b’dinei adam v’chayav b’dinei shamayim. What do you think?
ItcheSrulikMemberThey are fruits that grow abundantly and naturally in Israel, so they are special because Eretz Yisrael is.
A related question is, are we sure that our barley is the ????? of the chumash?

ItcheSrulikMemberI really enjoy the Torah threads. We haven’t had a good one lately since every time somebody starts one it gets political.
ItcheSrulikMemberFirst of all, you should ask a rav who knows both choshen mishpat and the relevant technologies.
Here’s my two cents as a systems guy and a programming student.
1- These days when the setup utilities usually prompt you to create a password, the network would probably have the din of a bench in front of someone’s house which, according to the gemara in Bava Kama, falls under the rubric of zeh neheneh v’zeh lo chaser. I.e., if you were to use it lightly enough that your usage wouldn’t impact the network, it’s not a problem. If you were to use it to seed torrents or play online games that would be the equivalent of popa bar abba sitting on the bench in the gemara. (Sorry popa, couldn’t resist. :))
2- WEP encryption should have a din of an unsecured network because it really is that easy.
3- Even if you got a heter, it’s still unethical.
4- Even if you got a heter and don’t have any objections ethically (mitzad yashrus) it’s not a very smart thing to do from a security standpoint.
September 18, 2011 10:18 pm at 10:18 pm in reply to: Question about revarnishing old dining room chairs? #811207ItcheSrulikMemberWood bleach or some stripping compound will get most of it off but you have to sand down the rest. Today they make foam brushes that are even better than cheesecloth for staining.
Note: Flame spreaders will not work.

You must get every trace of the old stain off or the results will not look very nice, as you’ve just found out. Worse, there is no good way to fix that. You can either paint it over in some solid color, or strip it again and start from scratch. Also, if you try it again, use a polyurethane-based stain.
ItcheSrulikMemberThe EMS switchboard is a simpler shaila than the power grid because if a call comes in it immediately becomes muttar to pick up. The question is who’s running the telephone exchange? Today it’s almost entirely automated, but 30 years ago that would have been a problem in an all observant society.
Tums: HEY! I’m a Torah Vodaath alumnus…
ItcheSrulikMemberSo that Jews will have better things to do than waste time on forums. 🙂

Second, yes they are asking for a special accommodation. They’re within their rights to ask, but it’s up to you to decide if it’s worth the extra effort.

ItcheSrulikMemberhappym19: My question was about putting back something that was taken out. That is an issue. If it’s low enough to just keep it warm (not yad soledes bo, as others have already said) there is no problem. I think the reason more people don’t do it is that most ovens have a safety feature that turns the oven off after it’s been on longer than twelve hours.
ItcheSrulikMemberI’ll bite. Which shul?

ItcheSrulikMemberToi: Yes, but you can’t go into them because they contain treif reading material like history books.
/sarcasm
ItcheSrulikMemberDo they put it back or do they just leave it in over night and take it out for the meal? I’ve seen plenty of people, including rabbis, do that.

ItcheSrulikMemberYep, the man himself.

It may be too modern for you but it couldn’t hurt to check it out.
ItcheSrulikMemberSam2: Once again my sarcasm fails to come across online. Gotta stop doing that. 🙂
For the record, I think that we will end up paskening like Ramban not Rambam for a variety of reasons.
ItcheSrulikMemberFlorence’s shul is new by Italian standards. It’s only about 500 years old. Their community really is one of our oldest.

ItcheSrulikMemberHaLeivi: I must have gotten the daf wrong. There is a gemara on an amud beis in the 8th perek of bava basra that has the whole shtickle about 4 things lo hayu v’lo asid lihyos etc. and on tanna says “but there was a ben sorer umoreh, I sat on his matzeva and ate.” I have to look the daf up now.

Can anyone guess what I do on shabbos? 🙂
ItcheSrulikMemberAbbelleh: Thanks for reminding me about the kindle. I was going to ask Rav Belsky about it when I got one but I didn’t use it much so the shaila wasn’t necessary.
