??-? ????? ?????? ?????? ??? ?????? ???? ?????? ????? ?? ??? ?? ??? ?????
ItcheSrulikMemberToi: Get your facts straight. You are talking about the Union Prayer Book (reform) not the Sim Shalom Prayerbook (Conservative).
popa: Yet everyone trusted Tzeduki shechita.
October 5, 2011 1:19 am at 1:19 am in reply to: Oseh HaShalom vs. Hamvorach es amo Yisroel BaShalom #814309ItcheSrulikMemberProbably for the same reason they say L’david mizmor before aleinu at maariv on the yamim noraim. They adopted other minhagim. If you’re a yekke, stay a yekke.
ItcheSrulikMemberold man: That is a gross misunderstanding of the concept. There is no such thing as an averah lishmah despite what some people take from reading Rav Tzaddok too quickly.
ItcheSrulikMember??? ????? is not really mussar any more than Tanya. It’s machshava hamevi l’ydei maaseh. Of course some would argue that that’s better than mussar.
ItcheSrulikMember????? ?????? ??? ????? ??????
October 5, 2011 12:27 am at 12:27 am in reply to: Oseh HaShalom vs. Hamvorach es amo Yisroel BaShalom #814307ItcheSrulikMemberI think the old minhag ashkenaz is Oseh Hashalom. Check your Rodelheim siddur. Then the question is why so many ashkenazim don’t say it that way.
October 5, 2011 12:25 am at 12:25 am in reply to: Why do some people DAVKA stress the wrong part of words while davening or leining? #814385ItcheSrulikMemberyitayningwut: We aren’t critiquing amaratzim and tinokos. We’re critiquing baalei kria and baalei tefilla.
Toi: Your sarcasm is well-taken but we’re talking about things that actually change the meaning. Yiskatel v’yiskadesh is almost birkas Hasheim d’oraisa.
ItcheSrulikMemberI heard that in yeshiva but I could never find a source. In the end I found it in a kuntres of popular “chazals” that are not found in the primary sources (Mishna, Tosefta, Bavli, Yerushalmi, Sifra, Sifre).
HolyMoe: Who said he was right? Who says it wasn’t guzma?
ItcheSrulikMemberYes, for a short time after its founding. After it became conservative, it retained Orthodox faculty for quite a while. The uncle of one of my chavrusas in yeshiva was good friends with a former Professor of Mishnah from JTS who he describes as a “big talmid chochom.”
October 4, 2011 12:19 am at 12:19 am in reply to: Need translation of one page of R"ma mipano (??"? ?????), will pay #813994ItcheSrulikMemberWow! this is great and almost all literal. I have a couple comments if you want them though.
October 4, 2011 12:12 am at 12:12 am in reply to: Why do some people DAVKA stress the wrong part of words while davening or leining? #814377ItcheSrulikMembernitpicker:
I assume your name is a translation of ??????
1) What about people who pronounce the sheim ah-dee-NOY? I’m sure they know what a ???? looks like. They pronounce every other cholom as ???. It has to be davka. Ditto for “????? ?????? ???? ???” which is just plain blasphemous.
2) And in Bava Kama. So what, it’s talking about a different job. When I lein, I’m a baal kria. When I build the sukka I’m a baal Koreh.
3) Yep, and when I talk about dead Rebbes I say ????? ??? ?????
ItcheSrulikMember????? ??? ???? ??? ??? ? ?? ?????? ??? ????? ???? ??? ?????
ItcheSrulikMemberI checked and you guys were right about the founding of the conservative movement. I made the mistake of confusing the attitudes of the members with the origins of the leadership.
JTS was once Orthodox.
There’s a great story about Saul Lieberman talking to Rav Soloveitchik about higher criticism of the mishnah.
October 3, 2011 12:57 am at 12:57 am in reply to: Need translation of one page of R"ma mipano (??"? ?????), will pay #813989ItcheSrulikMemberGo right ahead. Academic English is not the best language for learning rishonim. I was just worried that OP or whoever he needs it for doesn’t speak yeshivish. And sorry about the formatting. I typed it up with bold and italics as indicated but I forgot to put them back when I pasted it in to post.
ItcheSrulikMember3
ItcheSrulikMemberAh, the one whose name and reputation go so well together. Yeah, I can’t blame her for not wanting him, even before the scandal.
October 2, 2011 9:11 pm at 9:11 pm in reply to: Need translation of one page of R"ma mipano (??"? ?????), will pay #813987ItcheSrulikMemberI did the first page until footnote aleph. It’s a bit academic since I wasn’t quite sure what you needed it for.
You can’t translate this kind of thing without some interpolation. Any words that I added for explanation are in italics. Verbatim quotes are in bold. Translation probably has more background info and stilted academic English than you need but it’s there to help anyone who wants to use it.
We begin with the gemara under discussion:
This mishnah is only dealing with long-term relationships like the RaMBaM’s description of a concubine. However, if the relationship was casual, chazal suspected her of having other relationships and therefore could not determine that the child was in fact his and therefore is not considered an heir for yibum and chalitza. In fact, the child is not considered acknowledged even if they were in jail together the whole time because of the halachic axiom of ??? ????????? ?????? .
ItcheSrulikMemberpopa: The youngest Jewish congressman is in his forties and married. If you suggested him to me I would have punched you. 😛
ItcheSrulikMembertickle toe itus: They started off as a breakoff from orthodoxy that tried to conserve (hence the name) as much as they felt was possible. The orthodox showed them how much really was possible.
sam4321: Are you talking about American reform, German reform, or the Hungarian neologs? All three had completely different origins.
ItcheSrulikMembertwisted: What do you propose to do about that?
ItcheSrulikMemberGo. Enjoy. The more visible shomrei mitzvos there, the bigger the kiddush Hashem.
ItcheSrulikMemberSam2: Conservative did all those things, but they only developed a doctrine after they broke with Orthodoxy. They started off as orthodox rabbis who looked for kulos to grow their congregations. Then they started using illegitimate kulos to the point that they had to define a movement to justify them. From there, it was a short jump to the “committee on Jewish law and standards” that serves as the Conservative sanhedrin today.
And yes, apparently we are talking about two different kinds of egalitarian minyanim. I was talking about the conservative kind that bills themselves as “fully egalitarian services led by men and women.” You seem to be talking about similar groups who just don’t have the guts to go all the way.
Reb Ber: So Creedmoorer chassidim won’t go to women’s minyanim because there’s a chshash heter?
October 2, 2011 6:13 pm at 6:13 pm in reply to: IMPORTANT: Don't forget Kiddush on Yom Kippur #1033982ItcheSrulikMemberPY: As Sam2 pointed out, we pasken chatzi shiur assur.
ItcheSrulikMembershmoel: Actually, they didn’t.
Sam2: Consevative didn’t start out denying basic tenets of Judaism either. They started off with “s’iz shver tzu bleiben ah yid” and went down hill from there.
Also, egalitarian minyanim let women do everything, not just kabbalas shabbos and pesukei d’zimra.
October 2, 2011 2:53 am at 2:53 am in reply to: Popa's reflections on Motzaei Shabbos; Haazinu #973001ItcheSrulikMemberI like number three. Here’s the kapporos ad a friend and I thought up last year:
!!YOM KIPPUR SPECIAL!!
THREE — count ’em — THREE!!! Chayvei krisus for the price of a chicken:
1- Shchutei chutz
2- Hakravas baal mum
3- bringing a min sh’aino ra’ui lamizbeiach.
Chap arein before yom kippur while there’s still time to be judged!
ItcheSrulikMemberSometimes I do, sometimes I don’t. This year I didn’t. Learning during chazoras hashatz doesn’t make it “better.” I’d rather go outside and shmooze. I’m not listening, and that way I’d at least get some air.
September 28, 2011 6:14 pm at 6:14 pm in reply to: Need translation of one page of R"ma mipano (??"? ?????), will pay #813979ItcheSrulikMemberSame here. You can crowd source it to everyone who responds and use the translation you like best.
September 27, 2011 10:08 pm at 10:08 pm in reply to: Ideas for learning for Rav Elyashiv refua shelama #825744ItcheSrulikMemberThanks for fixing the Rambam spreadsheet. Took three perakim.

September 26, 2011 10:11 pm at 10:11 pm in reply to: In honor of Tisha B'av. What you respect about… #1165154ItcheSrulikMemberI respect the two guys I saw when I walked into shul at 6 for slichos. They were already learning for a while.
ItcheSrulikMemberYup, I thought you were serious. Otherwise I would have said the same thing, and meant it.
ItcheSrulikMemberThe Jewish way of “taking protection” is:
? ???? ?????? ???? ???-???????, ??????-?????? ????????? ????? ????–???-??????? ?????????, ??????????? ????????? ?????. ? ???-???????? ????, ???????? ??????-???????? ???????, ????? ????????, ???????? ?????????? ???????????. ?? ???????, ?????; ???????? ???? ????????????, ???????? ???-?????????. ?? ????-???????? ??????, ????-?????? ??????; ?????????, ??????????? ????????, ?????? ?????????, ???????? ?????? ??????????. ?? ??????? ????????, ??? ?????? ?????????. ?? ???? ????????? ????????, ?????? ?????? ??????? ??????–???-?????????? ?????-????????, ??????????; ????????–??? ???, ????? ???? ?????? ?????????.
ItcheSrulikMemberI’d love to daven in such a shul, as I’ve said many times.
ItcheSrulikMember??? ?????? ??? ?????? ?????? ?? ???? ?? ???? ??? ??? ?????
September 25, 2011 11:09 pm at 11:09 pm in reply to: Ideas for learning for Rav Elyashiv refua shelama #825740ItcheSrulikMemberSigned up for the shas. I can’t seem to edit the Rambam spreadsheet.
ItcheSrulikMemberI can only say what my father did when he took me to the museums.
Dinosaurs: He pretty much told me what mod-80 said. That and complained about the inane placards about Dinosaurs and birds.
Art at the Met: He was always too busy trying to drag me out of the arms and armor exhibit to tell me anything about the art. 🙂
ItcheSrulikMemberTrust me, you are far from the only one. Here’s some practical advice:
1- Prepare one slicha for each day (I do the pizmon) ahead of time as if you were going to teach it. Translate it. Read it as poetry. Look up the psukim. Understand the literary devices. Then when you get up to there during davening you appreciate it because you don’t feel like you’re seeing it for the first time.
2- If you drink coffee before shacharis, do it this week. If you don’t, do it anyway. If you’re saying slichos before dawn like we should, there’s no issue.
3- This shabbos, find some time –not at the expense of your nap — to lear through the collections of psukim we say at the beginning of slichos and right before vidui. Look them up in context. Learn some of them with commentaries.
Now, if anyone has any advice to help me concentrate during the Geonic parts towards the end, please let me know. That’s where I really need chizuk.

September 21, 2011 8:57 pm at 8:57 pm in reply to: Chassidish Minhagim and which Chassidus does it #972655ItcheSrulikMemberUniversal is a fancy English word that means “by inzere” 🙂
ItcheSrulikMemberToi: So let them takeh be either tried or institutionalised. One or the other is definitely necessary.
ItcheSrulikMemberWhile the original Neturei Karta was founded by talmidei Hagra, a lot of the organization’s members today are ex-Satmar.
ItcheSrulikMemberThat, sadly, I also expect.
BTW in all seriousness, while I listen to secular music, I don’t listen to that group or hip-hop in general. Everyone has lines.
ItcheSrulikMemberYou probably do not want to tell her that 350 is also gematria ??? ??????

September 20, 2011 11:52 pm at 11:52 pm in reply to: Chassidish Minhagim and which Chassidus does it #972646ItcheSrulikMemberSome more chabad minhagim. (Note that so many chabad minhagim have to do with learning)
Say a perek tehillim corresponding to your age.
“Hayom yom” — a daily thought of chassidus said after shacharis. The original book was written by the sixth Lubavitcher Rebbe a good fifty+ years before “a lesson a day” was popular.
Finishing tehillim on the monthly cycle
Finishing the whole tehillim on shabbos mevorchim.
RaMBaM yomi.
Chita”s.
No daf.
Chasidus every morning before shacharis.
Dviding up shas every year on 19 kislev.
ItcheSrulikMemberbpt: I expect a college shaigetz like me to get it, but a BP Totty? Tsk tsk. 🙂
