Toi: Get your facts straight. You are talking about the Union Prayer Book (reform) not the Sim Shalom Prayerbook (Conservative).

Probably for the same reason they say L’david mizmor before aleinu at maariv on the yamim noraim. They adopted other minhagim. If you’re a yekke, stay a yekke.

??? ????? is not really mussar any more than Tanya. It’s machshava hamevi l’ydei maaseh. Of course some would argue that that’s better than mussar.

I think the old minhag ashkenaz is Oseh Hashalom. Check your Rodelheim siddur. Then the question is why so many ashkenazim don’t say it that way.

I heard that in yeshiva but I could never find a source. In the end I found it in a kuntres of popular “chazals” that are not found in the primary sources (Mishna, Tosefta, Bavli, Yerushalmi, Sifra, Sifre).

Yes, for a short time after its founding. After it became conservative, it retained Orthodox faculty for quite a while. The uncle of one of my chavrusas in yeshiva was good friends with a former Professor of Mishnah from JTS who he describes as a “big talmid chochom.”

I assume your name is a translation of ??????

    1) What about people who pronounce the sheim ah-dee-NOY? I’m sure they know what a ???? looks like. They pronounce every other cholom as ???. It has to be davka. Ditto for “????? ?????? ???? ???” which is just plain blasphemous.

    2) And in Bava Kama. So what, it’s talking about a different job. When I lein, I’m a baal kria. When I build the sukka I’m a baal Koreh.

    3) Yep, and when I talk about dead Rebbes I say ????? ??? ?????

I checked and you guys were right about the founding of the conservative movement. I made the mistake of confusing the attitudes of the members with the origins of the leadership.

    JTS was once Orthodox.

There’s a great story about Saul Lieberman talking to Rav Soloveitchik about higher criticism of the mishnah.

Go right ahead. Academic English is not the best language for learning rishonim. I was just worried that OP or whoever he needs it for doesn’t speak yeshivish. And sorry about the formatting. I typed it up with bold and italics as indicated but I forgot to put them back when I pasted it in to post.

I did the first page until footnote aleph. It’s a bit academic since I wasn’t quite sure what you needed it for.

You can’t translate this kind of thing without some interpolation. Any words that I added for explanation are in italics. Verbatim quotes are in bold. Translation probably has more background info and stilted academic English than you need but it’s there to help anyone who wants to use it.

We begin with the gemara under discussion:

This mishnah is only dealing with long-term relationships like the RaMBaM’s description of a concubine. However, if the relationship was casual, chazal suspected her of having other relationships and therefore could not determine that the child was in fact his and therefore is not considered an heir for yibum and chalitza. In fact, the child is not considered acknowledged even if they were in jail together the whole time because of the halachic axiom of ??? ????????? ?????? .

Sam2: Conservative did all those things, but they only developed a doctrine after they broke with Orthodoxy. They started off as orthodox rabbis who looked for kulos to grow their congregations. Then they started using illegitimate kulos to the point that they had to define a movement to justify them. From there, it was a short jump to the “committee on Jewish law and standards” that serves as the Conservative sanhedrin today.

And yes, apparently we are talking about two different kinds of egalitarian minyanim. I was talking about the conservative kind that bills themselves as “fully egalitarian services led by men and women.” You seem to be talking about similar groups who just don’t have the guts to go all the way.

Reb Ber: So Creedmoorer chassidim won’t go to women’s minyanim because there’s a chshash heter?

    shmoel: Actually, they didn’t.

Sam2: Consevative didn’t start out denying basic tenets of Judaism either. They started off with “s’iz shver tzu bleiben ah yid” and went down hill from there.

Also, egalitarian minyanim let women do everything, not just kabbalas shabbos and pesukei d’zimra.

I like number three. Here’s the kapporos ad a friend and I thought up last year:

    !!YOM KIPPUR SPECIAL!!

THREE — count ’em — THREE!!! Chayvei krisus for the price of a chicken:

    1- Shchutei chutz

    2- Hakravas baal mum

    3- bringing a min sh’aino ra’ui lamizbeiach.

Chap arein before yom kippur while there’s still time to be judged!

Sometimes I do, sometimes I don’t. This year I didn’t. Learning during chazoras hashatz doesn’t make it “better.” I’d rather go outside and shmooze. I’m not listening, and that way I’d at least get some air.

I can only say what my father did when he took me to the museums.

Dinosaurs: He pretty much told me what mod-80 said. That and complained about the inane placards about Dinosaurs and birds.

Art at the Met: He was always too busy trying to drag me out of the arms and armor exhibit to tell me anything about the art. 🙂

Trust me, you are far from the only one. Here’s some practical advice:

1- Prepare one slicha for each day (I do the pizmon) ahead of time as if you were going to teach it. Translate it. Read it as poetry. Look up the psukim. Understand the literary devices. Then when you get up to there during davening you appreciate it because you don’t feel like you’re seeing it for the first time.

2- If you drink coffee before shacharis, do it this week. If you don’t, do it anyway. If you’re saying slichos before dawn like we should, there’s no issue.

3- This shabbos, find some time –not at the expense of your nap — to lear through the collections of psukim we say at the beginning of slichos and right before vidui. Look them up in context. Learn some of them with commentaries.

Now, if anyone has any advice to help me concentrate during the Geonic parts towards the end, please let me know. That’s where I really need chizuk.

Some more chabad minhagim. (Note that so many chabad minhagim have to do with learning)

Say a perek tehillim corresponding to your age.

“Hayom yom” — a daily thought of chassidus said after shacharis. The original book was written by the sixth Lubavitcher Rebbe a good fifty+ years before “a lesson a day” was popular.

Finishing tehillim on the monthly cycle

Finishing the whole tehillim on shabbos mevorchim.

    RaMBaM yomi.

    Chita”s.

    No daf.

    Chasidus every morning before shacharis.

Dviding up shas every year on 19 kislev.
