Rav Yitzchok Elchonon At his hesped was mourned repeatedly

Problem was the plutocratic powers that be have endless funds
    Plus

    yitzyk,
Your story proves the almost precise opposite The reason why it was remarkable and extraordinary for him to say that because normally he was very averse for Jewish youth going to the Army

iirc In 1952 most institutions accepted almost anybody as long as they were sincere and ready
to self sacrifice To the nth degree, which indeed wasn’t usual

That presumably would apply for Jews also

    DY,
Everyone loves to quote that one .
however he refused to look at the face of Ben Gurion because he wicked
    how do they reconcile that?

    furthermore
So it seems some for personal sins Even grievous ones they may be Tinuk Shenishbah such a category
If one was submerged in that atmosphere

For one who however promotes them and and attempts to influence in public (e.g a parade)
there never Can be categorized as such

    Rabbi Dr. Raymond Apple, 29/10/18 11:37 | updated: 23:33

Rabbi Dr Raymond Apple AO RFD is Emeritus Rabbi of the Great Synagogue, Sydney. He is now retired and lives in Jerusalem, where he publishes OzTorah, a weekly email list and website with Torah insights from an Australian perspective.

    Q. Should people be prohibited from having guns?

    A. Guns have wrought immense harm in the United States and elsewhere in the hands of people on a rampage. Hundreds of innocent victims have been killed and hundreds wounded.

Whatever the perpetrators’ motives they have made normal life like going to school and shul vulnerable and unsafe.

There can be no justification for imperiling or destroying human life: everyone, young or old, must be able to “sit under their vine or fig tree with none to make them afraid” (Micah 4:4). Wanton killing is the worst crime there is (Exodus 20:13), even if it is unpremeditated (Numbers 35:11).

The problem with guns is threefold:

    1. The gun, which is the symbol of all means of doing harm.

In Jewish law a person must not own a dangerous dog (Bava Kamma 79a). If one owns a dangerous dog it must be kept under restraint at all times (Choshen Mishpat 409:3). Even a dog that is unlikely to do harm must be kept under restraint because it can frighten people (Shabbat 63b).

Hence it is best that nobody should own a gun and if they do they must keep it under restraint. Not only guns but all potential means of harm must be identified and dealt with as if they were guns, though it is admitted that guns seem to have a worse potential for harm than many other means of damage.

    2. The motivation: society must train its members to be law-abiding and peaceful and not use violence even if they are aggrieved or angry. In the long term, therefore, moral education must aim for good citizenship…

The community as a whole has this responsibility because no-one should “stand idly by when your fellow’s blood is shed” (Leviticus 19:16). This recommendation does not imply that teachers should be armed. That would be an irrelevant “quick fix”.

Some gun owners will insist that they have valid reasons to possess weapons. This may have an element of validity but there is still something that they can do.

Acknowledging that other gun owners are a threat to others, “decent” gun owners must exercise self-discipline and allow themselves and their genuine motives to be placed on a register and be regularly monitored. Fair’s fair and this is something they can do to alleviate the problem.

    Geordie,
    You’re right,
it doesn’t make sense and it shouldn’t.
Americans are too lost in talk shows.
Just as citizens or subjects other countries are lost in and influence by things that wouldn’t make sense to Americans and probably don’t make sense
Now rationally could try to explain it as Australian professor P Hogg on the difference between Canada vis a vis the US
Canada (At least prior to pot legalization ) ran according to what he calls Hoggs P.o.g
most important is peace ,order, and stable government while Americans have always relatively
been more concerned with legalisms Liberty and limits of freedom

1.They were supposed to have all the requisite qualifications
2 If a majority of the people backed Sadducees for example
the leaders eg Shimon ben Shetach were Entitled and obligated still
    to throw them out
    3.According to the braisa
they were promoted from lower Courts based on pure character ,
    meritocratic ,And perhaps dialectic traits

in reply to: Lubavitch Hats #1607841

    Reb Shmuel Berenbaum related
A couple of members of lubavitch were passing through the town of Mir in Europe. In Der Mir, the practice was that students did not wear their tzitzis on the outside of their clothes. On of those fellows asked one of the Mir bochrim “where are your tzitzis?” He received the rejoinder “here we don’t wear tzitzis (at all)”
    “Why not” was the query.
The immediate quip was Talmudic diction ” ‘k’dei shelo levayesh mi she’ain lo’
[ in order not to embarrass one who doesn’t have]”

    postscript

What followed was a public condemnation of the Mir in chabad circles, circulating that the Mirrers do not wear tzitzis.
R’ Shmuel chuckled and said that already in Europe we had trouble from them.

the above holds true to a lesser extent,
    for FDs and SWAT teams

in reply to: Female Police Handling Men #1606013

A big problem with females in the military
is that they disrupt male bonding.
People in the military die for their friends. They don’t die for a cause or the nation or whatever else is being fought for. They die for their friends. Disrupting male bonding means fewer are willing to die for friends if they don’t consider those in the unit friends because of the disruption of male bonding which happens when females are present in combat and in training .(try running bloody and naked through a river carrying a comrade with a member of the opposite gender nearby)
All female or all male units have been successful in Russian studies, but don’t mix males and females in training/combat/air combat units.

in reply to: Female Police Handling Men #1606011

Females do not have the bone density of males and get stress fractures easily and could not even carry the rifle and backpack at the USMA (West Point) without getting stress fractures so that had to be modified as is so much for females to pass requirements. In 1948, Israel had males and females in the IDF equal in combat and that caused the deaths of males to soar as they compromised their missions to protect the women and the Arabs fought harder to avoid being defeated by females in battle. It was too costly in lives to continue.

That is a special calling for females to sacrifice so much to put haShem and family before all else.

    Avi,
Was it a critique of full bodied conservatism or rather degraded conservatism?

in reply to: Alex Jones Banned From Social Media #1599796

should’ve put my post in quotes
iirc am personally not a libertarian of any stripe

in reply to: Alex Jones Banned From Social Media #1599578

As one libertarian put it—with admirable, if frightful clarity—“We’re an economy with a country, not a country with an economy.” Most Americans—thank God—don’t see it that way. They understand that politics supersedes economics, and for a reason. Politics properly understood must be concerned with the comprehensive good, which means with the highest good. There are limits to what politics can do, both practically and—yes—morally in interfering with the market. But indifference is not an option for a civilization that wants to survive.
The modern tech information monopoly is a threat to self-government in at least three ways. First its aforementioned consolidation of monopoly power, which the techies are using to guarantee the outcome they want and to suppress dissent. It’s working. How much does anyone wanna bet that many will come back with “Well, this is all inevitable anyway.” Whose interests does that argument serve? Which is perhaps one reason they push it so incessantly that people now reflexively repeat it, even people who really ought to know better.
Second, and related, is the way that social media digitizes pitchforked mobs. Aristocrats used to have to fear the masses; now they enable, weaponize, and deploy them. Imagine if the Marquis St. Evrémonde could have utilized, rather than having to flee, the Paris mob. The grandees of Professorville and Sand Hill Road and Outer Broadway can and routinely do use social justice warriors to their advantage. Come to that, hundreds of thousands of whom, like modern Red Guards, don’t have to be mobilized or even paid. They seek to stifle dissent and destroy lives and careers for the sheer joy of it.
Third and most important, tech-as-time-sucking-frivolity is infantilizing and enstupefying society—corroding the reason-based public discourse without which no republic can exist. Libertarians cannot see that, not because I am wrong and tech is actually good, but because libertarianism and degraded “conservatism” have no philosophic or moral framework for judging good from bad or right from wrong. To them, these categories do not exist except at the very lowest level. Little else but outright theft and the (non-consensual) infliction of bodily harm are condemnable.
But all the dynamism and innovation that silicon valley and their choir praise only emerge from a bedrock of republican virtue. This is the core truth that libertarians seem unable to appreciate. Silicon Valley is undermining that virtue—with its products, with its tightening grip on power, and with its attempt to reengineer society, the economy, and human life. When and if that virtue is finally gone, it will be an open question whether anything like the high-tech nirvana that so profess to admire can be sustained. If not, well . . .
If it can, it won’t be in a political environment that is republican, much less conservative or libertarian. And we know who will be in charge.

in reply to: Alex Jones Banned From Social Media #1599577

As has been pointed out many times, to companies like FB, Google and Twitter, which provide services for “free”, we are the product.
I am something of an economic libertarian but the threat the tech titans are deploying against liberty itself is concerning.
At the very least, they deserve to no longer be considered mere pipelines if they are going to edit what political content is allowed to flow and are instead required to function as publishers with their inherent legal liabilities.
Applying a reasonable law equally seems like a concept even fringe
libertarians would not have a problem with.
