sometimes it’s better to be “narrow-minded” than too “open-minded”.

I agree with you.
SJS,
you have a point there. If your hub got to know you always looking casual then he doesn’t expect more so it means you probably look beautiful to him the way you do (and maybe to the world as well, wouldn’t know, never saw you :-)) I went on formal dates, dressed my best, blew my hair and put on a full face of make up. It really makes a difference to my husband that I wear make up and it’s funny but some people are so obsessed with their looks that it is completely overdone while I have to work on myself to make myself look good (and I fail miserably 🙂
a side point, I know s/o who’s husband always tells her that she looks better without make up but he obviously doesn’t realize when she is wearing make up because whenever she puts on make up he comments that she looks very good. LOL!!
Also, I have a magnet that I think is hysterical. It goes, “We can’t both look good-it’s either me or my house.” So true!
(sorry for going so off topic.)
intellegentMemberasdfghjkl,
Oh no!
Am I that bad?
I know, I know – worse!
December 11, 2008 5:16 pm at 5:16 pm in reply to: Looking For a Mamar Chazal About Cosmetics #635050intellegentMembersqueak,
I don’t even know why I am honoring you with a response. Your comments were totally uncalled for.
I do not see anything in my silly post that is BASELESS DISPARAGING GENERALITIES that give people a negative self image.
The first part of my comment did not even contain my opinion on the matter. I just said that if you think it is a necessity then… and if you think it’s an extra then… I did not assert my view on the matter and I don’t even know what my view is because I did not really put much thought into that aspect.
I then added that I feel that make up can make a big difference to someone who does not have natural color and is not as noticeable on someone who has natural color. This is REGARDLESS of whether they are considered “pretty” or not.
I do not see anything that I wrote that would make someone think that they are ugly. And I certainly would never make any of my friends feel like they are ugly even subtly!
Your post sounds to me like you were upset about this issue for some reason and want to scream about it so you decided to use my post as a springboard, but I really don’t see the connection. I’d think you’d better cool it as well as taking some course in reading comprehension.
intellegentMemberbrooklyn,
1. arizona has 10 and california and florida have much more. i believe Louisiana has the least. not sure how many, though.
Did I misunderstand the question? I thought he meant the most southern point which would be florida. What are those numbers? oh. now i see, electoral college votes.
Joseph is that what you meant??
2. alaska. I think California has the largest population
Does NYC have the biggest population from cities? (wow that’s worded wierd.)

🙂
intellegentMemberbrook,
well good to hear that you don’t sit around waiting to get married (although I do hope it’s high up in your list of priorities…) I know exactly what you mean, some people are literally sitting around waiting to get married instead of making the most of the opportunity that you’ll never again have in your life whatever.
Oh! And by the way, I have something else to add to your profile;
you have a nice sized ego.
intellegentMemberA train track runs between 2 train stations.
It takes exactly 12 hours for a train to go from station A to station B and the same amount of time from B to A.
Every hour, a train leaves from each station.
If you get on a train at station A, how many trains will you pass coming in the opposite direction from station B?
intellegentMembermyshadow
very impressed
I agree that it is silly to rehash the same topics over and over especially if we don’t know that much what we’re talking about but come on! If you don’t like the topic just don’t click!
intellegentMemberbym,
i guess you were referring to the fact that I said “give me a break”. I just meant that your post about calling something stupid was a bit far fetched. I thought you were kidding. Sorry if I offended you .
intellegentMemberjoseph,
totally didn’t follow exactly what you’re saying and have no patience anymore for this math but don’t worry, I didn’t think I really did it right, opened a math book last way to long ago.
bym,
Not sure what you mean by that you offended me. Maybe I’ll go back and check earlier posts when I have patience.
intellegentMemberI don’t think chumras = kids going off the derech.
AT ALL.
My in-laws keep more chumras than anyone else I know and the none of the children have so far shown any signs of rebelling! It has a lot to do with how it is done. Somehow, my hub and his siblings are all extremely proud of the way they do things. they look up to their father more than anyone else I know.
When a child is “at risk” it usually means that they have a set of factors that can cause them to become a “problem” or “go off the derech”. However they are only at risk. It is not definite that they will go off because some people go through adversity and come out stronger and some come out broken. I am not judging a child who has a rough childhood but the fact is some are just made of stronger stuff! (Looking back, I think I could have had some good excuses to “go off the derech” should I have wanted to but I didn’t want to so I never came close to anything like that!)
I also think that when you say chumros = off the derech? it could have something to do with how the parents are. In other words if children see that their parents are two-faced, having tons of chumras to show off to the world and then are not so good at home. But it really has nothing to do because they are the exception. there are those who are really sincere and are good at home and in the streets. whatever.
December 10, 2008 7:26 pm at 7:26 pm in reply to: Looking For a Mamar Chazal About Cosmetics #635027intellegentMembersjs and oomis
here is a simple conclusion to your argument about NEED or WANT.
If you consider it a necessity to look nice, than according to oomis, some people NEED make up (which I agree with). If looking nice is just nice and not a necessety then you would probably WANT to wear makeup to fulfill that desire.
I think people with natural color, even if they are not so beautiful, makeup doesn’t make a difference on them. But people who have white skin must wear foundation to look decent and they can look BEAUTIFUL with makeup but really not good without.
Anyway, I am sounding very vain (is that how it’s spelled) and I am really not! (I have to really force myself to put on makeup…)
intellegentMembercharlie brown
Hmmm, I’m really gonna have to think about that one. This is not a decision you make lightly.
intellegentMembersqueak
Most brooklyners under the age of 55 don’t say gaaaawjzis. At least the ones I know.
intellegentMemberJoseph,
Alright, here it is:
( [3x – 3x^2 +1]^744 ) x ( [- 3x + 3x^2 +1]^745 ) ?
Actually I’m not sure what you mean by the sum of the coefficient (btw, wouldn’t that be product?)
((3 – 9)^744)((-3 + 9)^745)
(-6)^744
x 6^745
_______
1
or do you mean
( [3x – 3x^2 +1]^744 ) x ( [- 3x + 3x^2 +1]^745 ) ?
((3x – 9x +1)^744)((-3x + 9x +1)^745)
((-6x +1)^744)((6x+1)^745)
Well actually I guess I get one in any case. or is that 2? I really don’t remember.
or is it 6x+1?
(copied and pasted the post from the other thread.)
What’s the answer?
intellegentMemberJoseph,
How did you post that if you are away from your computer?
And are you closer to the riddle thread? 😐
I never really go to the riddle thread. should I start now? Does that makes sense? I don’t like doing things that don’t make sense. :-
intellegentMemberkitzur_dot_net
It’s not only the gashmius aspect. It’s a whole new culture, language. A child can go from being Mr./Miss popular to a wierd foreigner.
I think even if they adjust “well” and don’t go “off the derech”, I still wonder if it is right to a child to uproot them at such a stage away from everything familiar to them.
intellegentMemberJoseph,
thanks!
Never knew that!
abcd1234,
If you click “end” on your keyboard it should take you to the bottom. Or you can hold the little bar by the scroll down on the side of the screen and drag it down. It takes a lot faster than scrolling.

I guess that’s why you asked me if I live in Israel. Looking for a place to go on shabbos? Well sorry but by the time you come here, I’ll be on the other side of the ocean so you’ll have to find someone else. Or you’ll be smart and take the $20,000 and use it to start off with after you’re married instead! It can really come in handy then. Go to seminary in Brooklyn or Lakewood or Detroit or wherever. It does not hamper shidduchim at all! (Unless you are in the crowd where coming to Eretz Yisroel is a MUST but then again you seem to be proud of your BAIS YAAKOV status and if that means Yeshivish, most people are fine with in town sems. If you need people in any of those towns, I can hook you up. LOL!)
Why I crack you up is because you make yourself sound like a little rebetzin (afraid of L”H etc.) but then you go on the internet e/ night…
intellegentMembermost people who are out of high school were once in high school and most of us don’t have amnesia. Whatever. Forget it.
brooklyn19- I would say you are a girl who lives in Flatbush and is about 21-22 age range and looking for a shidduch. You are NOT a 35 year old “guy”! LOL!
intellegentMemberBais Yaakov maydel,
Give me a break!
Joseph,
What’s up!? What’s the answer. I can’t take the suspense any longer!
I’m breathless!
intellegentMemberasdfghjkl,
I don’t think you’re really from Ireland.
brooklyn19,
Are you sure you’re from Brooklyn? You did gorgeously on your history regents?
And btw, forget history, I think you are ready to be awarded the “most posts on ywn award”!
intellegentMemberWell, I’ll come outright with this.
I COULD NOT CARE LESS WHAT ANY OF YOU CALL ME!
I was KIDDING!
mdlevine, (made sure not to capitalize) you really think deeply! I just misspelled it but that is very funny!
any other comments?
I am feeling very good with all the attention!
intellegentMemberI second the time stamp thing. Most of us know how to count so if we want to know how long ago it was we can use our fingers and toes.
brookly19 that is a great idea!
and about the “news room”, good joke! I don’t think anyone is envisioning a posh office on the 14th story in Manhattan! I’m sure it is made up of a couple of desks or dining room tables in some houses in boro park or monsey. In fact maybe only one.
intellegentMemberHm. everyone is really confusing me. I’m not even sure what I want anymore.
Anon,
Thanks for your understanding (if someone spelled their name rivke or Chona or Ezter, that would still be the spelling of their name, no?)
charlie brown,
That’s not exactly what i meant but I guess it’s true, LOL!
Joseph,
Wow! You are brilliant! How’d ya know what I meant?!? :-0
intellegentMemberActually, I have a sister-in-law who is a student in bais faiga. As far as I know, she is home from school so who said it was cancelled? (I also know some people very well who teach there.)

intellegentMemberJoseph,
Just the coefficients?
is that 1?
-6^744 x 6^745
intellegentMemberanon for this,
well, I don’t know but I remember looking up places on a map and I don’t think there were any c’s or k’s on the map but maybe I’m mistaken. And those examples are actual signs. It’s really queer (or keer?)
about spelling my name “intelligent” I will have to think about that. The truth is, I get very offended when people spell my name differently but I guess if it really causes you Tza’ar I will try to be mevater.
intellegentMemberBais Yaakov maydel,
I’m also out of high school. What’s the shaychus?
Yanky55,
I think that would be way too intelligent of a decision. Since I am intellegent and not intelligent, I will stick to my screen name. Now you will only really get what I mean if you are intelligent or is that intellegent?
Oh and thanks for the apology, I really went to sleep crying last night. You have to be carefull with what you say!
What does living in Israel have to do with this?
intellegentMemberSJSinNYC,
Why are you so obssessed with cash businesses…?
Anyway, who said that some people are obsessed with one chumra and forget about all else. That may be true for some people, but what has that got to do with the subject?? If Tznius is being discussed, other mitzvos don’t necessarily have to be mentioned! If you tell someone that it is wrong to have a cash business and they answer you, yeah, but some people are so busy not having cash businesses, they forget about Tznius.. You will think they fell off the wall. what has one got to do with an other.
Also, what people are failing to realize is that there is an other aspect to some of these “guidelines” that are not necessarily Tznius per se. We are told to be different than the goyim. So following their styles and going after all the silly trends, is wrong even if it can be defined as Tznius. Of course some will argue, so does that mean that we can’t wear button down shirts, stockings etc. because after all it started by the goyim? Obviously it is not so clear cut. Some will say that denim is OUT and some think that denim is fine. There are some things though that if you have a sensitivity for, it should really be obvious. But of course there will always be different definitions.
Also, as long as people aren’t causing tzaar to others, it is sometimes a good thing for someone to feel very strongly about the things they do. If everyone would be milchig about yiddishkeit, where would we be?

intellegentMemberThere will obviously be a difference in culture between two different countries! Not all teenagers are capable of literally starting a new and completely different life at that stage. Parents have to think of their kids before making the lofty decision of making Aliya.
intellegentMemberWhat’s today’s date?
Who’s the president of the United States of America?
intellegentMemberand by the way, WHAT is why someone who can’t spell INTELLIGENT would fit in perfectly here.
intellegentMemberYanky55,
I do know how to spell intelligent but one misspelling caused me lifelong repercussions! (Actually, I hope I will not be busy with the coffee room for THAT long, but I guess life-on-YWN-long repercussions.)
intellegentMemberHaQer
I guess you live in E”Y where the “k” and “c” were not invented yet.
(ex. Eli Haqoen Street and Petah Tiqwe)
Now let’s see who can figure those out!

December 7, 2008 7:59 pm at 7:59 pm in reply to: The Yetzer Hara of Bitul Zman – Online – Internet Addiction? #1076958intellegentMemberBais Yaakov maydel,
If you had a job that causes you to be in front of the computer for hours… would be a bit different.
Where are you during the day? in BY?
intellegentMemberSJSinNYC,
We do not believe in “the end justifies the means”. That is the main point that I am trying to bring out.
I’m not discussing about a Rabbi telling a BT to take it slow. I can’t imagine it would be possible for someone to start keeping every single halacha in one day! What I mean to say is that it is wrong to think, that driving on Shabbos can be a GOOD thing. It is not (no matter what benefit can come out of it).
If you are saying the same thing as me, great! It sounded to me like you were arguing my point, but I guess I was wrong.
intellegentMember000646,
Hey! I said that first. You stole it!
You are not a moderator, at least I hope not.
December 4, 2008 7:26 pm at 7:26 pm in reply to: The Yetzer Hara of Bitul Zman – Online – Internet Addiction? #1076942intellegentMemberdveykus613,
Oh My! You are totally speaking for me! I feel good knowing I’m not the only one, but don’t worry I still know it’s wrong!
Of course it’s not YWN’s responsibility to battle our nisyanos but your thread made me think that maybe they should have certain times of day that all the new posts (at least in the coffee room) get added.
Let’s say at 9 am, they post all the comments that were added since the end of the work day the night before and then again at 1 pm for all the morning posts and then at 5 pm for all the afternoon posts. I guess they could add one in at 10 pm or something like that. The down side is that there will be less back and forth but it would be better in a way because we won’t have to keep checking every ten minutes. We’ll know that once it’s updated it will get updated again only in a few hours…
intellegentMemberI think many Roshei Yeshiva and Rebbeim feel they can’t say anything to the bochurim because they smoke themselves! However, if they are in their 60’s, there was not as much awareness when they started and EVERYONE practically smoked then. Of course they should stop but it is very difficult. Still bochurim SHOULD NOT SMOKE. It should be considered an embarressment to smoke and not “cool”!
