Can you believe that people actually get ANGRY at some anonymous poster?
intellegentMemberCurious too, but not worth giving up my anonymity.
intellegentMemberJoseph,
That sounds like examples I remember from a grammar book!
It would look like this:
“without you guys wouldn’t be able to survive!!!!!”
Does that mean?
“without you guys, wouldn’t be able to survive!!!!!”
“without you, guys wouldn’t be able to survive!!!!!”
I think asdfghjkl meant the former, LOL!
intellegentMemberI can only try,
COOL! I copied it to notepad and it showed up beautifully. I realized it’s candlesticks already on the thread but didn’t get what all the m’s were for. It is REALLY shtick!
intellegentMemberNot sure about the first question (although I remember seeing a little lit up santa claus mentchy in someone’s window when I was little and my older brother told me that we should spit at it [not literally at it, it was on a second floor but towards it])
About the second question, I was brought up in a house where it was called “Kratz Mich” (not sure but I think that’s the pronunciation and it’s supposed to me scratch me)
intellegentMemberOh SJSinNYC, I’m good bh!
LeiderLeider…
Yikes, I didn’t realize people actually remember everything I ever say about myself. I’d better be more careful in the future! LOL! Yeah, I’m the “lady” in the house.
intellegentMemberYa know what:
this is the sillyest thing I ever heard of.
Did Yated/Hamodia/Mishpacha ever include a survey in their newspaper/magazine on whether their readers feel a certain topic should be included or not? I think the one running this site should decide for himself if he has any backbone and not go and find out what the readers’ responses will be. It should be based on your principals(les?) not on whether or not people will get angry or not.
Unless, you just figured it would be a good thread and really have no intentions on following up.
intellegentMemberI’ll say it again:
HA HA!
Don’t be so gullible everyone!
No one here is gulllible. Speaking of gulllible, did you know that the proper spelling is with 3 L’s? – YW Moderator-42
intellegentMemberWow!
I’m really getting good ideas from all of you! I guess the coffee room can actually be a good thing once in a while!
mdlevine,
When I read your post, I thought, wow, that would be a great present for me! (pizza, yum!) Then I read the last paragraph… :-
SJSinNYC
Do you know if that could be bought in e”y? I guess you don’t live here so maybe not. But does anyone know?
intellegentMemberha ha
intellegentMembersmalltowngirl,
We shouldn’t idolize gedolim but many put pictures on their wall because there is an inyan to look at a tzaddik and also, we don’t just learn an “art” from a gadol, but we are supposed to look up to and hope to follow them as a WHOLE person. Sports celebreties would probably belong to a catagory on the opposite extreme. I doubt you would want any of them as a role model on how to live your life. So let’s not make comparisons.
All those who say, if you want you don’t have to read it: I don’t get it? Isn’t there such a thing as standards and values that publications/websites/books/companies have? What if they’d all say, if you don’t like it, don’t read it? In order to open a book or go to a website, you want to know what kind of standards they have and based on that is how you (should) decide if it is for you.
Again, I am not expressing an opinion on whether or not the thread should be made, just clarifying certain issues.
intellegentMemberI live in ey. but not exactly in the know of how these things work
intellegentMembergavra_at_work
Again, I don’t mean to dispute the words of a gadol, just looking for explanation.
Doesn’t that sound a bit far fetched? The frei people do a lot of things on shabbos. In a lot of circles in America, the kids play sports and don’t have an inkling of what’s goes on at a big baseball game and barely know what the yankees are.
intellegentMemberMy shadow,
I was thinking of that, but then I realized that who said it has to be specific for me? Why not give ideas for e/o?
But if you want to know, we can focus specifically on presents for spouses in this thread.
intellegentMemberAnything else?
intellegentMembergavra_at_work,
You sound pretty sarcastic, but seriously, is it just the rebbeim in the chedarim that decided it is assur for little children to have some fun? Or is it really something that was officially banned. I don’t want to disrespect chashuva people but I can’t understand what could be wrong with 9-year-old children throwing a ball at recess. Is it better that they do crazy stuff in the street and have chutzpa to adults who pass them?
About the sports thread, I think there are two catagories under this topic. The first is the actual playing of it and the second is the culture. I don’t know much about either catagories, but I do realize that since the separate catagory is something that is entrenched in secular culture, it would probably not be appropriate on a “Yeshiva World” website. I am not expressing an opinion on whether it should be allowed at all, just whether it should be included in this website. I’m sure there are plenty of sources for sports news. On the other hand, maybe it would be best to have the news from a kosher source.
In any case, don’t you have a moreh derech that you consult? Why are you asking us?
intellegentMembergreat ideas! really! thanks!
mrmoose-that is really a great idea-but not always feasible (I think that would be a better present for me…LOL)
intellegentMemberI can only try,
are you saying that all colors don’t have rhyming words?

Brown was basically saying that what R’ Miller said is of course emes but he said it in a bais medrash and not everything has to be repeated on the internet for ALL to read. (I think targum shivim could be a good example, where certain things were changed so they should not be offensive to them…)
intellegentMemberctrl z= undo
intellegentMemberbrooklyn19,
I am not expressing any views about kollel/work etc. but just btw, sitting in an office may not be traditional but modern day kollel is probably also not traditional. THings were done a lot differently in Europe. I think yitzy99 was referring to work in general which can be translated into the type of work that is done in certain time periods.

anyone have less common examples?
intellegentMemberActually, I got married in a “cheap” hall. I did not feel that I needed anything more. I was more than happy that my parents did not have to spend a fortune (they were anyway). I wish everyone to have such a beautiful wedding as I did. I think it was the most enjoyable night of my life so far! I wish weddings could start being even cheaper. It is such a shame to blow so much money on a wedding.
intellegentMembernoitallmr
LOL! Literally!
(But you really shouldn’t say that to your brother…)
December 15, 2008 7:02 pm at 7:02 pm in reply to: Please Share Recommendations For Children’s Fiction #670100intellegentMemberI read wayside school quite a few times. I enjoyed them but at the same time found them to be a bit queer; in fact a bit spooky if you ask me.
intellegentMemberillini07,
Is your remark better?
sjs,
Whether you can understand it or not, we follow the Chafetz Chaim’s approach in general. I don’t know of anyone who does not follow the Chafetz Chaim when it comes to Shmiras Halashon etc. Sometimes we put the Torah and the words of our Rabbanim before our own logic. (Although I did not either check it up so I am not confirming that that is what the Chofetz Chaim recommends)
Also, the way you explained your approach with your friend sounds different than when you originally mentioned it. When you use the word “accept” often it can somehow make it sound like you accept what she is doing.
intellegentMembermw13,
I believe when you scroll down it makes it smaller. When you scroll up, it enlarges the text.
December 15, 2008 2:05 pm at 2:05 pm in reply to: Please Share Recommendations For Children’s Fiction #670094intellegentMemberLittle house on the prairie-it’s a whole series.
Anne of Green Gables, the first book.
intellegentMemberjewishfeminist02 is correct. When you use the word “that”, the following words are not in quotes.
(If icot was missing the comma, you should have also mentioned that he was missing the quotes, no?)
intellegentMemberIf you mention it to any of these people, they say that that is the only way they can eat but I wonder if they ever bothered trying an other way.
intellegentMemberDoes it bother anyone that Gedolim are starting to be treated as celebreties L’havdil? They put the gadol’s picture on their organization’s brochure or on ads in the paper. I find it a bit degrading but maybe I’m wrong.

I will reword what I meant. I was not referring exclusively to people who did not own a tv/video. I was referring to those who never really watched it. Of course it is possible that some had access to movies but those people can be placed in a catagory of people who do watch. I meant that those who never really were exposed to movies don’t have a taava. (If someone never tasted chocolate they will generally not crave chocolate… And then again, there are some who tasted it and don’t like it just as there are those who “tasted” movies and are not interested in it.)
intellegentMemberSJSinNYC,
I guess it partially depends on how you define “open-minded”. I’m sure there is not only one definition. In any case, the example that you bring about thinking that ONLY your Rav is correct and even when he starts to go a bit awry you are still clinging to him is a very good example. I think in that respect I am not at all like that. You seem to lean a bit in that direction because you are constantly referring to your Rav’s opinion and seem to really consult him for a good part of your life which is wonderful but I hope you realize that he is human and can make mistakes so you look out for that.
“Being open minded does NOT mean that you just agree with everything that anyone says. It means that you listen and discern that you are not always correct.”
I agree.
What I meant by being “open-minded” can sometimes be worse than being narrow-minded is that when you are too accepting it is not good either. You have to be firm in knowing that the Torah is the ONLY way. Also, you have to be firm in your convictions and not easily sway from your derech. (which according to your post does not seem to be a problem for you at all! 🙂 ) However, you do need to accept that your derech is not the only correct way.
By the way, before you accuse anyone of being narrow-minded, I don’t mean to offend you, but to a certain extent you seem to be a bit narrow-minded. You have a certain view of the “frummer” community that you don’t seem to budge from. You also don’t seem to display any awareness that there is a possibility that anything but you Derech is correct. I don’t mean to insult you or anything, but please realize that sometimes being open-minded is realizing that you may not view things completely objectively.
People tend to think of being open-minded as being able to accept lower standards. But what about being able to accept higher standards? In other words, is someone who accepts more “modern” views open-minded even if they do not consider anyone “frummer” than them valid? (I know modern doesn’t literally mean less frum but couldn’t think of a better word so please let’s not get into that)
intellegentMemberRAAAAA!
It really drives me nuts (But I don’t know if I can be described as the most calm…)

Did you happen to read the mishpacha this week?
intellegentMemberJoseph,
“all”?
intellegentMemberI think you should never allow people to post their emails and the like. As far as I recall, one of the “dangers of the internet” is the possibility of hooking up with anonymous people. Why would you want to help create such a situation?
intellegentMemberIs your daughter the one with the brown ponytail and flat shoes?
intellegentMemberI can only try,
I guess if you count the train that is coming out of the station as The General pulls in then it’s 25. In my opinion, you either count #1 or #25, not both.
intellegentMemberoomis1105
How did rashi know what H’ meant when He said Naaseh Adam?
PLEASE! They had Ruach HaKodesh and other ways of knowing things. They didn’t look it up in history books.
About speaking Lashon Harah about people who do certain aveiros, as Tzippi says, it is not pashut. There are a LOT t’nais that it depends on. I don’t recall all of them unfortunately but pretty sure it includes having the right intentions which the typical yente probably does not. However, based on the fact that it is allowed on condoned in certain situations is proof that there are situations where we deal with people in a not such nice-and-friendly-no-matter-what-way!
Not everything is ACCEPTABLE!
(I recently read a story in Horizons about someone who was very close with a Rosh Yeshiva who had EXPELLED him from school years before! How could that happen? The Rosh Yeshiva was warm to him and even instituted a program where the classmates could raise money to bring him back to school. there was also a behavioral program for the classmates to earn him back in class. When the bachur saw what was going on and how hard his classmates were working to have him back, he felt so good that it really worked and today his issues are over.)
Obviously there are times that people have to be pushed away but it has to be done in the right way and with the right intentions.
intellegentMemberI can only try
I think it’s 24 actually. Not sure what you mean by the 13th
There are 12 trains already out on the track which you pass by the time you’re halfway through and then you pass the next 12 as you finish the second half of the way. You’re basically meeting a train e/ 1/2 hour.
December 14, 2008 12:58 pm at 12:58 pm in reply to: Television: A Cry of Anguish and Appeal to Our Jewish Brethren 📺 #1192810intellegentMemberI grew up with videos-no tv. My family long since got rid of it but by that time it was easy to get hold of a dvd and slip it into the innocent (??) computer.
Most people in my circles have absolutely no taava to watch videos because they never or rarely watched so it is not something they think about. I, however, really enjoy it and have a strong taava for it. I don’t have any in my home now so I barely have access but when I do I would love to watch. I’m not interested in anything innapropriate and would be quick to forward those parts and in general only view clean things.
Still, I wish I wouldn’t care for it and am trying to work on myself to “free” myself of it.
Now you might say you only watch the news or documantaries or whatever they’re called but still. Don’t try to convince yourself that tv is a positive thing. I understand that everyone has different nisyonos but once you realize that it is a negative thing that is the first step to freedom.
Don’t fool yourself.
intellegentMemberSJSinNYC,
hm… good rationalizing but you would probably be checking each post 10 times every time one more post was added so would probably take at least as long!
intellegentMemberWe=me?
Learn your grammar!
“Me are looking for a REAL yeshiva guy”?
shouldn’t that be “I”?
jk
intellegentMembercharlie brown- EXACTLY!
intellegentMemberJoseph,
Oh come one, do you want to be referred to as a number ?
intellegentMemberWho are the shapiro bros?

Not sure if you sincerely misunderstood me or are getting a kick out of taking my words out of context. I would like to think the former. On the other hand, the way you quoted 1/2 a sentence ( 1) “according to oomis, some people NEED make up (which I agree with)” sounds like it’s the latter.
Anyway, who cares, I know what I meant.
intellegentMemberSJSinNYC
Haven’t you noticed by now that she thinks very highly of herself? Since she has so many maalos, it can’t be that she is only one person so she refers to herself in the plural form.
brooklyn,
I’m really just kidding! 🙂
