Same by the Ashkenazim. however, we refer to it as a KEIL MALAY RACHAMIM.

mentsch1: My issue is that you are using this forum for your mussar when it was not the reason for these bochurim being issued the tickets. They did not get a ticket because cars passed them. They go a ticket because there is a law on the books making hitchhiking illegal for whatever reason the legislature passed the law. If you don’t agree with the law, move to New Jersey (unless you already live there), run for the legislature and change it.

Why is this different than our fights against shecita bans etc. ? Because we cannot live a normal life without shechita.. Hitchhiking (however you want to twist yourself into a pretzel and turn it into a chesed) is not. If the boys were just walking along the road towards Lakewood, your mussar would be correct. The fact that they were actively trying to hitchhike in an area where it is forbidden is the problem.

To solve the problem would be to designate an area where yeshiva bochurim to congregate and drivers know to go there to offer them rides. It would be similar to the groups that gather at “Shomrei Shabbos” on 53rd and 13th Ave. looking for rides from Brooklyn to Lakewood.

mentsch1: implicit in your posts is something that is not part of this story…..not giving a ride is a maaseh sedom. Where in the story is there any mention that 5, 10 or 20 cars passed these boys without stopping? The posters are just stating that the cops did not do anything out of line by issuing a ticket, just like if you passed a red light and were issued a ticket. Ignorance of the law is not a valid defense.

And here was my response to you: mentsch1: Picking up a hitchhiker maybe an act of chesed but the hitchhiker is violating NJ law whether you like it or not. I am not so naive to believe these boys were looking for a ride just so the driver can be credited with an act of chesed.

DovidBT: Just trying to bolster what Avi K wrote, look at the last half of the 5th Perek of Megilas Esther (starting at passuk Tes). Haman thinks he is on a roll and describes all the good that has happened but then meets Mordechai who still doesn’t rise or move for him. The megilla then describes that Haman went home and devised a plot against Mordechai. Haman at that moment felt that he would succeed based on R’ Yitzchok’s teaching. However, since Mordechai ignored him and did not contend with him, Hashem reversed the fortunes and Mordechai and Klal Yisroel were saved.

Avi K: While you are correct it a the yom hadin, there is still an aspect of yom tov to it as stated in Nechemiah 8:10-12 –

10: And he said to them, “Go, eat fat foods and drink sweet drinks and send portions to whoever has nothing prepared, for the day is holy to our Lord, and do not be sad, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.”
11: And the Levites quieted all the people, saying, “Hush, for the day is holy, and do not be sad.”
12: Then all the people went to eat and to drink and to send portions and to rejoice greatly, for they understood the words that they informed them of.

CTL: If I remember correctly you have had family “celebrations” this past year (bris of a grandson) so a family get together may not necessarily trigger bad memories in the minds of the younger grandchildren. I am not a psychologist so I am not talking with any specialized training.

I can understand Mrs. CTL’s feelings as my father’s petirah was two weeks before chanukah and I was far from being in a celebratory mood.

Since your wife has already expressed certain feelings, maybe it would be a good idea to move the seudos to one of your children, but have them ask your wife to come help with preparations. My .02

Either way your family should have a nechomah from the petirah of Mrs. CTL’s mother and may she be a “MELITZAH YESHARAH” for your entire mishpacha.

i know that many Rabbanim from Flatbush do take vacations during the summer yet in almost every case there is a sign up with the Rav’s vacation location and/or summer phone number or a listing of Rabbanim who can be called if there are shailos. There are also many Rabbanim who are home who are available to answer shailos.

The Rav of my shul does not take a “vacation” but does go away for a shabbos or 2 to visit his children. Many years ago I had a shailoh during the nine days, called my Rav and on his answering machine were the names and telephone numbers of 4 poskim to cal if there was an urgent need for a psak.

I have heard that R’ Asher Zimmerman TZATZAL, did not go away for the summer so he can be home to answer shailos.

Joseph-The FCC is the agency that enforces these rules and understand that they may have the legal ability to confiscate. That doesn’t change the fact that Hatzoloh, a a private entity, does not. tHE ARTICLE STATES “They were interfering with Hatzolah for the past two weeks in the Woodridge area, until they were tracked down by Hatzolah members. They immediately had their radios confiscated.” The way it is written, it seems that the Hatzoloh members who “tracked them down” confiscated them.

Midwest2: I am waiting for a talmid of Rav Belsky to respond to your question where we can find the original psak. The CRCWEB dot org cite has a number of piskei halacha that were heard from Rav Belsky directly including:

Copepods in New York City Water
Submitted by: Rabbi Yaakov D. Lach
Rav Belsky permits drinking New York City water
without a filter. His primary reason is that the reservoir,
by definition and in function, is a bor (water pit) and
therefore the creatures that develop there are
permitted. Although the heter of a water pit is only to
drink straight from the pit (since when removed from
the pit, the creatures are considered “piraish” /
separated and become prohibited), in our case this is
not a concern. This is because in New York City all the
creatures show up dead at the tap, due to
chlorination. There are Rishonim who are lenient and
rule that once dead, the creature remains mutar,
even when separated. We are allowed to follow this
opinion when there is a tziruf (additional lenient
factor). Here, the tziruf is that the incidence of the
creatures is not very common, generally being only a
miut hamatzui. Rav Belsky himself drinks unfiltered
    water.

Rabbi Belsky permitted drinking New York City water, even though it contains copepods. He argued that since Jews have been drinking this water for over one hundred years, and no one ever noticed them, they must not be considered nirah l’einayim (visible to the the naked eye). Furthermore, since the copepods only live in the reservoirs, which have the status of mei borot (gathered water), the copepods are actually permissible to be eaten. [Note: In deference to the opinion of other posekim, the OU requires filtration of New York City water.]

The question for the OP is how do you know if it’s an “illegal driveway” or not? and what geographic location are you located?
