dovrosenbaum: Which Dunkin Donuts? There are a number of “Kosher DD” sites under different hashgachos. Please be more specific. While there may not be a mashgiach temidi some hashgachos have a “yotzei v’nichnas”.

Theprof1: this is why every thread goes off topic. The person is specifically asking about the store Coffee Bean. What does Starbucks and Dunkin Donuts have to with it?

“The availability of kosher certified food varies by location”. I take that to mean that while Store “1” sell products “A”, “B”, and “C”, Store “2” only sells “B” and “C”.

VerZogt: What a great idea for a present – how to deal with “disappointment”. So he doesn’t get everything that his friends received. They are supposed to be “presents” or “gifts” not entitlements. He wants a steel band? Oh well, I as the person giving the gift like the leather band better.

Did one ever wonder why a tallis and kittel are given as a present to the chosson? MAYBE, it’s because they are the only gifts that he will take with him “nach a hundredt un tzvanzig”. Why give a watch? To make him aware of the greatest gift Hashem gives a human being – the gift of time and how to use it correctly…and not just as an adornment for the wrist.

Is a silver esrog box important? Maybe buying an esrog and lulav for the first 10 years would be more important then the box that holds it.

Why does it have to be cute/funny? I personally prefer just to be introduced and then open up with a funny line or joke.

I heard in the name of R’ Avigdor Miller TZATZAL: Gan Eden and Gehinom are the same place. You are in a shiur and the break is at 1:00 PM. The clock is stopped at 12:55 PM. To some it is Gan Eden; to others Gehinom!

An almost impossible question to answer without knowing the age of the child. How to motivate a 6 year old will differ from a 9 year old, 12 year old and a teenager.

absan: I was saying that when my wife gave birth, we bottle fed and the nighttime hours (10:00 PM – 6:00 AM) were mine to take care of the newborn while my wife slept. There is an old joke about fathers sleeping like babies…..up every three hours and very cranky. It has been a while since we had our youngest child.

As I said my wife made her own decision as to where to go from the hospital. She did not want to go to her parents (even with our bechor). She felt that being home was the best thing for her.

absan: Had you stated that in your original post I probably would not have asked the question. Since you do counseling it seems to me that you do don’t want to add an extra financial burden on one that can’t afford the “kimputar heim”. B”H I live in a neighborhood where people will help with making dinners or I myself cooked for the family. Most of my children were bottle fed so I took care of the nighttime feedings…and yes I slept like a baby…up every three hours and very cranky.

Actually my wife came home to her house and her bed after each birth. This way she was home to be there when our other children came home from school and to direct me what needed to be done around the house. She also did not want to go to her mothers house. And yes these were her decisions.

Geodie613: It was a regional issue in Europe as to what to do about hats or taleisim over the head. It is brought down that in Slabodka, R’ Yaakov wore his hat over the head because that was the minhag hamakom. See Mishna Berura 91:6 – he quotes the Pri Megadim about covering one’s head with “talis shel mitzva”.

As the first poster listed, they open up credit cards in your name. That means you will have to supply some anonymous person your Social Security number. Many credit cards offer you points when you sign up. However, you must charge a certain amount on the credit card over ………(3 months, 6 months, 12 months). Since most credit card points are sold at between 1.3 and 1.4 cents per point they would have to accumulate some 75,000 points to recoup $1,000. Since they are supposedly paying for these charges then you will never see the credit card statements. What if they don’t pay the charges? The credit card issuers will come after you not them.

In the USA, anyone can be stopped for going even 1 MPH over the speed limit. However, many police officers/state troopers will not stop motorists unless they are travelling at 10 MPH or more over the speed limit. In NYS, the fines and the points increase depending on how many miles over the limit the motorist is travelling. In NYC, the speed cameras allow for 10 MPH over the limit before the photo is taken (at least anyone I know who has received a speed camera ticket was going >10 MPH.)

Syag: “i have heard that you are supposed to pay in relation to how much you “cost” the host”.

That is common in the non-jewish world where the bride and groom generally pay for their own wedding. The weddings are much smaller (most of my coworkers had 150 guests or less).

This has never been common in our community. You give what you can afford.

“Not really sure how someone cheshbons that”.

If you want to go with the cost per person all you have to do is call the hall and ask what is the price per person.

Comlink-X: It could be……but the point that I believe Sparkly was trying to make, that since the adverse health effects of smoking violates Venishmartem Meod L’nafshoseichim and therefore a person who smokes is OTD. (Sparkly if I am misquoting you please tell me). Since all these other things may also be violations of Venishmartem or are other miztvas asay or a lo sasay…..

Health: I have my own opinion and I only use this alias. From what I can see from all of your posts (on this and all other topics) is that YOU ARE THE ONE TRYING TO MANIPULATE EVERYONE. You quoted the sources for the gedolim you mentioned. All I said was that quoting R’ Moshe accurately is not a krumkeit. I never said that R’ Moshe paskened it was muttar to smoke. I personally do not smoke and I wish everyone would stop/not start. My original position though is the same. If Sparkly wants to consider smokers OTD then anyone who:

    Drives above the speed limit

    passes red lights

crosses in the middle of the street

    Eats fatty foods

    don’t exercise

    bungee jumps

    rides a large roller coaster

    talk loshon hara

    is not shomer negiah

uses air conditioners with shabbos clocks (R’ Moshe paskens that it is assur)

    etc are all OTD.

Health: Quoting R’ Moshe accurately is NOT A KRUMKEIT! If R’ Reuven says that the psak is no longer applicable, then it is HIS psak that his father’s psak no longer applies. R’ Moshe had to pasken with what he knew and understood at the time. Further research has proved that smoking is even more dangerous than what he knew. That doesn’t give us the right to misquote his original psak.
