Lightbrite: do you even know who R’ Boruch Ber is and when he lived? While this quote may not be appropriate in today’s circumstances (although it was quoted by the Morah Dasra of my shul) take into account when and where it was said. He was the Rosh Yeshiva of Kaminetz and was inspiring HIS talmidim for Simchas Torah. It could very well be that there were no elderly people, invalids, or others at that place and time. Stop trying to put modern day political correctness onto what are gedolim said and did 100 years ago.

I don’t understand your logic in questioning one of the greatest roshei yeshivas in Europe on a comment he made 80 – 100 years ago to his talmidim.

There’s a difference between “appearance” and “mode of dress”. A woman may have a good “appearance” but will turn some guys off if her dress/skirt is above her knees or shirt/blouse above the elbows.

While it has become the “protocol” for the loser to concede, there is no law or rule that says they have to.

Joseph: My son who went to Chofetz Chaim has a beard and does not wear peyos behind his ears. My second son (not exactly a “Brisker” but learning in a similar type of yeshiva) does not have a beard but wears peyos behind his ears.

The big difference is that my older son started helping and learning with teenagers as soon as he was able (aged 22 now 26) while my other son is still involved with his own learning and not even thinking yet about harbotzos torah (and he is 24).

BYG: generally they try to build communities in the US and Canada and yes I mean “out of town”. However, they may or not be remote depending on which State we are talking about. Either I or my son (who attended Chafetz Chaim for high school) know musmachim in places such as LA, Las Vegas, Dallas, St. Louis, Orlando, Miami, Rochester, Milwaukee (home of WITS), Memphis, Vancouver, Ottawa to name a few. However, they may also go to places where there is no frum infrastructure and build from scratch.

LF: Just a reminder that what you state is for Nusach Sfard. I daven Nussach Ashkenaz so the last tefillah is the “Shir Shel Yom” not Aleinu.

Why do people leave early? For some it is car pool issues. Their sons have to be in Yeshiva at a certain time and the school does not provide bus service. The fathers have to drive them to yeshiva. For others it is their work schedule. They may not have a minyan near where they work so they daven first with a minyan and then leave to go to work.

Buy a shlock……..except if it doesn’t rain to the point that it ruins your soup you are still required to eat in your sukkah and therefore the decorations can still get wet.

Kollelman: You can have a meeting with the individual who gave your son “an earful”. I had an incident like this when my oldest (now 26) was in 9th grade. I allowed him to stay home during a 12 inch snow storm. The next day when mass transit was normal he went to yeshiva and the menahel read him “the riot act” about missing yeshiva. My son called me and I called the menahel and told him that I gave him permission to stay home. I then asked the menahel why he wasn’t in yeshiva during the snow storm and he answered that he was stuck in Monsey. I then read him the “riot act” about practice what you preach. Needless to say he never questioned any of my decisions after that.
