Someone once tried to explain to me how they now had an instrument which can’t be Assur on Shabbos. It basically uses some sort of magnetic frequencies and it creates music by passing your hand in the air between them.

Google “Theremin” for such an instrument. It’s nothing new. The story of the inventor is fascinating – cold war, defection, kidnapping – and worth a read. For those who listen(ed) to secular music, the Beach Boys’ song “Good Vibrations” used it extensively.

A device that would allow anything I’m looking for to beep, like you can search for the cordless phone by making it beep, or call your cell phone if you don’t know where it is.

    This too already exists!

Google “Ultra 8 Wireless RF Electronic Locater – SI676FUN”

    ====================

    My invention idea:

A device that can be used to pay for parking that would work similar to e-z pass.

Using this device would save you from having to walk to the parking pay device, inserting cash or CC, then walking back to your car and putting the ticket in the windshield.

It would also save you from expired meter tickets. It would NOT save you from parking too long in a time-limited metered spot, or illegal parking.

    Here’s how it would work:

    1) Open an account and receive a device for your dashboard (just like e-z pass) that’s connected to your credit card.

    2) The device would only be valid for license plates that you register, making its theft useless for the thief.

    3) When you park in a metered spot, push a button to start the billing cycle. The appropriate amount will be deducted for each time period the device continues to run.

    4) A built-in GPS will be used to determine the parking rate, based on boro, street, time, etc. This info will be available for the owner to see. The GPS will end the billing once the vehicle is moved, the hour changes to non-metered parking, or a manual “off” button is pushed.

    5) A hand-held device used by traffic agents will determine if you’ve set your device to pay for parking (or perhaps just a green LED to indicate it’s been set?) If you haven’t set it, you’ll get the same ticket as you would have for an expired meter.

    6) If you’ve overstayed the legal duration at a particular parking spot, you’ll also get a ticket.

    7) For those who prefer to pay by cash or CC, they can continue to do so (just like the “Cash” lanes that coexist with e-z pass lanes).

    The MENSA Wannabe

I walked into the local Mensa

Sat down on their new credenza

    Said I wanted to apply

Instead, I got the evil eye

My ego dragging on the floor

I turned and headed for the door

Saw a Mensa member (with his great brain,)

Trying to exit, push and strain

Now I have a little hope

For although with brains, his head was full

Shimmy to the top of a rope.

Cut the other rope at its very top.

Create a loop of rope at the top of the rope you’re on (probably using a foot or two of rope).

Hold on to the loop, and cut the looped rope below the loop.

Tie the two cut ropes together.

Run the tied rope thru the loop, letting each end hang equally below the loop.

Climb down the tied rope, being careful to keep hold of both sides.

Once you reach the bottom, release one side, and pull the entire thing thru the loop, leaving you with @ 198′ – 199′ of rope.

    Correction:

There are eleven steps needed to get from “Utter” to “Chaos”. There are ten words between “Utter” and “Chaos”.

Hint #2: there are three consecutive words that have “u” in the second position, followed by five consecutive words with the same vowel that isn’t “u” in the second position.

Your troll-detection radar is better than mine ?.

Some threads arouse my suspicions, but this one didn’t; probably because I actually had this occur to me many years ago, when a neighbor came by to let me know my cordless phone conversations were coming over their radio.

in reply to: The Riddle Thread…. #1069860

Hint: More than one word in the solution list is of the 4 + 1 (e.g. takes, taker, taken, etc) variety. (don’t try to darshen what “more than one” means – it’s deliberately vague and can be any number between two and all eleven.)

    Utter Chaos

    (by the great Will Shortz)

Can you go from “Utter” to “Chaos” in eleven steps, using the following rules?

    1) Each step allows one letter to be changed.

    2) The order of letters can’t be changed.

    3) A valid five-letter word must created in each step.

    4) If adding additional letters to a shorter word creates a valid form of the word, e.g. take ==> takes, that’s also OK.

(as an added incentive, be aware that I didn’t solve this one. you now have the opportunity to demonstrate that at least one person here has a bonier head that you do. ?)

If anyone is interested , cowboom.com is still selling used ipod touch 4th gen 32gb models for about $5 more than yesterday, but today you can pick and choose which specific item you want (some are in better condition and/or include accessories).

    $149.99 – 15% = $127.50 + free shipping + tax

30 day no questions asked money back guarantee.

They have a site-wide 15% off sale, which expires Dec. 30.

Personally, I’ve bought computers and other electronic items from them and I’ve been satisfied. One word of caution – some items they sell aren’t good buys and/or are ridiculously overpriced (for example some used netbooks they were selling for $320 before dropping them to $100). Make sure you know what’s a good price before you buy from them.

Thank you – $45 sounds very good, and the location is reasonably convenient.

I did a Google street view of Avenue O and West 7th St. I saw a Reisman’s bakery on the corner and a few other other stores there, but nothing that looks like an electronics shop. Do you have the store’s name or address?

    longisland

Thank you, but $99 is more than the owner will pay.

in reply to: Poor Tim Tebow #932010

OK, now that I had my fun with the silly previous post, here’s a real answer:

Tebow seems to be a really decent young guy. He has been extremely gracious in handling the way he has been (mis)used this year, the way he never was given a chance to play regularly, and the way he wasn’t given a chance to start when the starter failed. In summary, he seems to be more of a “mentch” than anyone in pro sports nowadays.

    However…

He shouldn’t be a NFL QB. He’s a great athlete, he’s built like a tank, and can run really well. But, his throws have no accuracy. If he was a fullback who occasionally threw option passes, that might be his best fit.

If the starter (Sanchez) was a better throwing QB, Tebow would be a change of pace. As is, a switch just changes a poor throwing QB who’s not a deep threat with an even poorer throwing QB who’s a running threat – this isn’t something that can cause a defense substitution problems.

    In summary:

-Tebow’s a nice young man and I wish him the best of luck.

-He was 100% mislead as to how he would be used in NY.

-I don’t want to see him as my team’s QB.

-He may find success playing a different position.

Sometimes a person will stop posting because they simply don’t have much time, they lose interest, or just don’t have much to say. While they may be missed by other posters, that’s just the way things go sometimes, and it doesn’t mean it’s a problem.

If someone leaves because they were insulted, angered, hurt, put off, or similar reasons, that is a problem. It would be a shame if “coffee addict” leaves for any of those reasons. Speaking for myself (and surely others), thoughtful posts are something I enjoy reading, whether or not I respond to them.

    big deal

    Good point re: the flooring.

I neglected to mention that other sites also mentioned “floating” flooring as an effective component in vibration absorption and noise blocking.

I am assuming that this is an already finished house, where a ceiling is easier to work on and add stuff to than a floor would be.

On one of the threads I read on this subject, people were discussing running a separate trunk line for the central heat & a/c in the basement, just to avoid having noise from other rooms travel thru the vents. I can also think of some ways of avoiding fixtures and their boxes create pathways for the noise to travel thru, the most extreme being to use wiremold (or conduit) – but I would look into it to see if that made sense or was too extreme.

    getzel1

You probably also saw this, but “Roxul stone wool” is something like insulation which is also (according to several people) effective in dampening noise.

…the problem is when talking to people that did either each person has very varied opinions.

Hopefully, they had success stories using different methods, which means there’s more than one way to approach this, as opposed to contradictory info as to what works and what doesn’t.

It seems that there isn’t only one “right way” of going about this; there are several different methods that can be used, some together, and each one will help.

in reply to: What is The Best Ways to Sound Insulate the basement for a tennant #910307

    getzel1

Instead of just regurgitating what I read, here are a few suggestions:

    3) Potential solutions can be very different, depending on whether the basement currently has a ceiling or is exposed joists.

    6) Mass Loaded Vinyl is another material that some people recommend as a component to soundproofing.

    7) Different frequencies of sound are blocked more or less effectively, depending on what you do.

    big deal

Did you do the work yourself?

    If so:

What method did you use? Existing ceiling, green glue, new sheetrock? New sheetrock, green glue, new sheetrock? Did you use sound clips? Insulation? Anything else?

    If not:

Did you have it done professionally? Would you recommend the person or company that did it?

This is the time of year that we ask H-shem to judge us with a forgiving eye and view our actions in the most understanding and favorable light.

We must remember that there is always another person behind the SN we are arguing with, and the pain we can inflict on that person is just as real as that inflicted by a face-to-face insult.

Last year I inadvertently insulted another poster with something I said shortly before Rosh Hashana.

Is there a reason the mods don’t care about this? Because I find it is starting to make it very unenjoyable to post here…

I think the moderators and the site owner do care about it, some very much.

It’s just that it’s pretty much impossible to stop someone from behaving this way, and when they tried an alternate approach, i.e. to “out” all the SNs that belonged to this person, innocent people ended up getting suspected and hurt – some pretty badly.

I agree that it detracts a lot from a comfortable “heimish” environment for all CR participants, especially for those who’ve been targeted.

    -Reasonably priced

-Easy to splice and remove portions of videos

    -Easy to use transitions

-Easy to create and flexible menus

-Easy to use fade-in / fade-out of background voice and/or music

    -Crash and bug free software

-Reasonably easy volume and brightness/color adjustment

-Easy patching in still images (photos)

-Easy speed manipulation (speed up / slow down)

    Anything else?

    Apparently not 🙁

    1) It’s not slaying a troll, it’s merely attacking one of the Hydra’s heads.

    And here we go again…

Of course I wanted it to end, several posts ago in fact. But since you clearly can’t stand not to have the last word, here is your excuse for violating your earlier pledge not to continue; I guess this is your way of continuing.

    Oh, please.

I know exactly what time of the year it is, and which Yomim Tovim are coming up.

I regret nothing I said here, and (believe it or not) am trying very hard to expose the bad faith you’ve engaged in throughout this entire discussion without personally attacking you.

My *only* point about dina dmalchusa in this discussion, is how it relates to this issue being discussed. We could have a six page discussion on just dina dmalchusa, and all its intracacies and various opinions, if we so wished. But that wasn’t where I was going. I was simply pointing out that there are shittos, probably in the majority and including RYSE, that interpersonal (and business) monetary issues aren’t covered under DDD. Nor are criminal statues covered across the board. If Congress passed a law requiring, under criminal penalty, that all Americans hang a picture of the POTUS on their wall, DDD would not require compliace with that law despite its being criminal in nature and even assuming it not being a violation of halacha.

    A ridiculous example.

    Per WHICH poskim?

And you are saying that Rav Belsky and any other posek who says dmd applies for things other than taxes and counterfeiting is arguing with the Shulchan Aruch? If so, I don’t believe you.

Furthermore, I won’t even loo up the Shulchan Aruch now because:

    b) Almost every single reference that you have supplied until now that I looked up has been misrepresented by you, either thru distortion or omission.

Rav Shapiro said that per RYSE the tnai itself is acceptable to be used but that RYSE never indicated that the buyer ever agreed and is therefore subject to the tnai — and that he is not, in fact.

    Here’s the quote:

Also, all three rabbonim I have discussed (unlike Rav Belsky) do allow the individual to trust his own judgement as to whether he would or would not have purchased the CD (or other IP).

You also question my describing the majority of poskim’s position since you think I probably don’t know what the majority hold

    True.

…yet a few days ago above you yourself describe a position as that of the “overwhelming majority of poskim” without any knowledge of such.

A valid point, believe it or not.

Rav Belsky, lbclc Rav Moshe, and the overwhelming majority of poskim and rabonim whose opinions can be found online also say it isn’t allowed, for varying reasons.

I didn’t make notes on all those who forbid copying music, but Rav Schapiro and Rabbi Bleich are the ones who I saw allow it.

Yet you persist in falsely saying I am “cherry-picking”. Sticking with my own Rov’s position, the same Rov I use for ALL my shailos (when he is available), is hardly “cherry-picking”. Furthermore, even though I hadn’t identified him, I did give you two other poskim who are on-the-record that copying is permissible under the circumstances.

    However:

    2) You DID omit parts of what Rav Schapiro said that were machmir and that said that even if hasogas gvul wasn’t a halocha “it is unethical and should not be done” portion of his explanation of “yored letoch umnosoh…”

I have addressed every single point in every one of your arguments.

    -Some I have challenged.

    -Some I have agreed with.

-One or two I have conceded on.

    Ksiva V’Chasima Tova

    You, too.

While we’re on Rosh Hashona plans, here’s a bit of advice from someone who’s stuck up for you a few times in the past:

    -Do teshuva.

-Realize the damage you can do to a Rav’s reputation if you present yourself as a follower of his and act unscrupously.

-Stop trying to fool people and present yourself as something that you are not.

    -Be honest.
