You are correct, but this was intended for illustrative purposes – to show a possible format that would allow people to easily track if a letter had been used or not.

If I understand you correctly, you want info on how to speed up your downloads, not speed up your actual computer.
In that case, most of my earlier questions are not nogeah, because computer speed and download speed are two different issues.
Also, if you regularly plan on downloading huge files (i.e. movies) you may be among the minority of people who should spend the extra $$$ and get a cable modem rather than DSL.
Does this address / answer your question?

2) Why are you asking? Did the system slow down? A major slowdown? Was it sudden or gradual?
4) What model computer do you own? How old is it?
5) How much memory does your system have?
6) What application(s) do you run? Does the slowdown occur with any particular app?
7) Is your computer connected to the internet? How?
8) Do you have antivirus, antispyware and firewall software installed? Are they current?
9) Do you run Windows Update either manually or automatically?
If you have concerns and are not tech-savvy you may be best off simply bringing your computer to a pro for an evaluation (or getting your neighborhood 15-year-old whiz to take a look).

Someone please tell me, what is the difference (if any) between a laptop and a “notebook?”
If there is a difference, is one better than the other?
Can either or both do exactly what a desktop tower and monitor can do?
Basically, yes. This depends, of course, on the hardware each is set up with (i.e. DVD burner, memory, etc.)

Please fix a couple of errors in my prior posting:
1)??????????? should be ????? ?????? – two words.
2)”that he write” should be “that he write”
3)”upon the miracles” should be “for the miracles”
4)”the mockery of card-playing” should be “card-playing”
1 and 4 are important because they affect the accuracy of the quote and translation of the words of the Chofetz Chaim.
(There is no need to post this correction request.)
Thank you.

Thank you for looking it up and pointing it out. I probably should have looked in the Biur Halocha while I was looking up the Mishna Berura.

Translated:
And they are accustomed to saying songs and praises etc: In the teshuvos of the Maharshal siman 85 that he write that it is fitting that the simcha (joyousness) should be blended and saturated with a Torah-like simcha, and should not be nullified from its establishment. And in our multitude of sins there are men that instead of songs and praises that are fitting to praise H-shem (may he be blessed) upon the miracles that he performed for us, they increase the mockery of card-playing, and the holy seforim ascribe much wickedness to this, and one who watches his neshama (soul) will distance himself from this.

b) the answer is always an even number (including possibly zero).
Since these hints didn’t help me, I omitted them.
If you want to try to solve the puzzle with these hints STOP READING NOW.
==================================================================================

The answer is: All dice which have a dot in the center have all their other dots (petals) added.
A one has no other dots.
A three has two other dots.
A five has four other dots.
The two, four and six have no center dot.

I can only tryMemberThe Smart Fortwo (not a typo) has full-size seating for two adults. Its safety rating is excellent for a small car, and quite good overall because of its well-designed and extremely strong frame.
It is highway-capable with a top speed of slightly over 80 mph, although stability is noticeably affected at that speed.
The mileage is very good, but not spectacular at 33 mg city, 41 highway. The Prius and Civic hybrids get better mileage, and the Mini Cooper is only slightly lower. The Smart Fortwo diesel, which was sold in Canada got almost twice as good mileage, but is not available here.
Parking is a huge plus with such a short (front-to-rear) car in congested urban areas with scarce parking.
The car is made by Mercedes (a German company). The Mini Cooper is made by BMW (also German).

Many posters here include mekoros, which can be quite helpful.
For one who will look in the Shulchan Orech or Mishna Berura, a mekor listing can provide a shortcut to something that they would do anyway.
For all others who are unsure of a halacha, while learning and discussing svoros are definitely talmud Torah, for an actual psak (or halocha lemaiseh according to a rav without an actual psak), ask your LOR.

My haskama isn’t needed – I don’t have ownership of this thread (or any other), but if your asking for my two-cents, go for it.
When teaching shop, it’s understood that some tasks will be botched and leave a mess, but as long as a student doesn’t run a finger thru a bandsaw or router-table, no problem – that’s part of the learning process.
My intent in starting this thread was to localize the mess, and give people (including me) a chance to “potchke around”.
The text on my earlier post with the HTML tags was preceded and followed by backticks, and the lists on my later post were manually typed, so that doesn’t prove anything re: “messing up” the rest of the page.
As “curious”, “Charlie Brown” and I demonstrated via our repeated efforts, perseverance pays off.

I saw the vort you quoted re: kvitlech at http://halachafortoday.com/weekinreview.aspx
Based on the actual Orech Hashulchan which states:
(Cut-and-pasted, but confirmed in a sefer that these are his words verbatim)
The tranlation is: “But those who play with cards – their punishment is large, and in our multitude of sins this plague of leprosy is spread in the house of Israel. Woe upon us that this has ocurred in our day, and how many types of sins hinge on this! And he (who) is merciful shall forgive sin(s). And he who is capable of eradicating this – his reward will be very great”
1) While the Orech Hashulchan does not approve of playing cards, there is quite a bit added in “halachafortoday” that is not in that Orech Hashulchan.
2) I don’t know who “halachafortoday” is. It’s possible I just missed it, but without knowing who something is coming from, I would not automatically assume it is correct.
I did not look up Yesod V’Shoresh Ha’Avodah.

For whatever reason, the site software doesn’t display the rest of the page properly after a list is entered (see the lower part of the first page of this thread), so that may be just as well.
That said, here’s what the site Joseph’s URL pointed to said:
Ordered list-
<OL>

<LI>Cross the 14th Street Bridge
<LI>Take the Maine Avenue exit
<LI>Turn left at the first light

<UL>
<LI>Andy Hodges
<LI>Trey Gregory
</UL>
<LI>Engineering
<UL>
<LI>Karen Joslin
<LI>Sheila Malone
<LI>Karl Heinz
</UL>
</UL>The UL tag is for Unordered List and must be closed.
The OL tag is for Ordered List and must be closed.
The LI tag is for List Items and (aparently) doesn’t need to be closed.

The specific laser being discussed is projecting its beam where there are no vapors, dusts or smoke in the air. The answer portion states If there is dust, smoke, or mist in the air, you will see that light pass through it. You will see a flashlight beam scattered by these particles and you will also see a laser beam.
The atmosphere can and does distort light to an extent, which is why computer enhancement of satellite photos taken at extreme magnification is helpful, and even necessary in some cases.
Thermal currents can also cause distortion aka heat waves.

A couple of tips:
1) Ascii art is best with a fixed-with font such as courier or courier new. The “Font” tag is disabled (for us) on this page, but putting a backtick before and after the entire drawing both preserves spaces and forces a fixed font.
2) The first line within the backticks left-justifies. Try using a “throwaway” first line before your art.
3) The backtick is the little apostrophe-like character under the tilde.
4) Before risking a public viewing of not-ready-for-prime-time ascii art, why not try it in the CR Laboratory?

The info below was cut-and-pasted from a discussion about lasers.
It contains a reasonably concise explanation of what I tried to describe above.
Why does the laser not create a beam of light that you can see as it travels through the air to its destination (like a flashlight)?
You can only see light travel across a room if something in the air scatters that light toward you. If there is dust, smoke, or mist in the air, you will see that light pass through it. You will see a flashlight beam scattered by these particles and you will also see a laser beam. In that respect, the two kinds of light are very similar. Some laser beams are so intense that the Rayleigh scattering (the scattering that creates the blue sky) is strong enough to make the beams visible even in perfectly dust-free air. The beams shown in class are not that strong and would only be visible if something in the air scattered their light toward your eyes.

If “All Summer in a Day” is the short about a planet that rains constantly (Venus, before people knew how hot and full of CO2 it really is), I remember that story well. It was a haunting morality tale of the irreversible harm that can be done to someone else due to a thoughtless prank.

I can only tryMember“Mother to Son” by Langston Hughes – welcome to the real world, kid. Not too many crystal stairs here.
“Richard Cory” by Edwin Arlington Robinson – no one knows yenem’s pekel.
“The Charge of the Light Brigade” by Alfred, Lord Tennyson – makes an incredible militiary fiasco sound heroic and noble.

That’s a good point – if there was no atmosphere, the brochos on lightning and thunder (no weather) shiluach hakan (no flying) would also be affected, among many others.
I was specifically asking about Shabbos and Yom Tov.
The answer is – there would be no bain hashmoshos. That means that Shabbos and Yom Tov would be shortened slightly for someone living on the equator, and by a larger amount the further one moved from the equator.
Currently, since the equator is moving fastest, its twilight period is shortest.
Atmospheric refraction is what causes the sky to remain somewhat light after the sun dips below the horizon (and lighten before sunrise), but without it daybreak and nightfall would be instant.
Beams of light traveling thru the air are only visible because of water vapor, smoke or dust in the air that they illuminate, which is what I think is what you meant (the moon, with no atmosphere, has a night and day).

It will never freeze.
Freezing means dropping to 32 degrees, and then losing enough energy to change states to solid.
Energy is lost during evaporation, which can drop the water’s temperature, but once something freezes evaporation can’t occur.
I assume that once water is at a temperature that it wouldn’t change states either way, evaporation would be minimal.
Also, the cold air, even at 0% humidity has a much lower absorbtion capability of water than warm air, so I doubt it would have much of an effect.
Several years ago I read how “wind chill” is measured, but I don’t remember specifics.
I seem to recall that not everyone agrees how it should be measured, or if it is a useless number, since it isn’t really an accurate measurement of how someone bundled up for winter would feel.
Is this the measurement that has two thermometers side-by-side, with the bulb of one in wet cotton, or is that the relative humidity test?

“O Captain! My Captain!” is only pretty much the most famous American poem – and I managed to forget it. Oh, well.
