“you know what you had edited from that post of mine? was i at least right?”

-You’re right to an extent, but there are other extremely serious issurim involved.

These are questions you should probably not ask an unknown blogger on this or any other site.

I think it would be hugely helpful for you if you had someone trustworthy who you knew would never betray your confidence to speak to with questions and issues like these.

Your reluctance to be preached to is understandable – I am talking about individuals with whom you can talk honestly and be yourself.

We can all use a non-judgmental, sympathetic ear at times.

    That’s a good question.

In order to fulfill “Al todin es chavercho ad shetagia limkomo”, I’ll need to investigate.

Make mine extra cheese with mushrooms (I may even qualify for the “runners” thread, due to my zrizus in retrieving the evidence).

Your guesses were right on target, but the one-at-a-time constraint only allowed the first letter you submitted (F) to be validated.

    amichai-

what did you do, open a dictionary and pick out a word?

-A dictionary was used to confirm the spelling, but not in choosing the word. This word was picked because: 1) It has lots of letters, including common and less common, making it fun to guess. 2) It’s long, decreasing the odds of a hanging-man result. 3) It’s a somewhat uncommon word, which requires additional thought. 4) It’s an “upbeat” word – see its adverb usage.

Your recollection of the “raid” line is quite likely more accurate than mine.

I thought I remembered the “cockroaches surviving nuclear fallout” theory being debunked recently, so I turned to my knowledgeable friend, Prof. Google PhD, and he told me that although roaches are not as resistant to radiation as originally thought, they are much more resistant than humans. There are other bugs and microbes that are much more resistant than roaches, including some microbes that can live in irradiated meat. Now, enjoy your melava malka 🙂

    Hi.

No apology to me is needed. On any mainstream news site one can read things worse than what I asked the moderators to remove. Since this is a frum site where the standards of nikiyas haloshon are high, I thought those words were inappropriate.

A subject often mentioned here is hypocrisy.

In my mind there are several different levels:

    3) One who rebukes others for their transgressions and really means well, but occasionally slips up himself. Once again, an example I can think of is there are some shushkers in shul, who are usually quiet but may occasionally slip up.

    4) One who rebukes others for their transgressions and does not violate that particular aveira, but knows that he himself is far from perfect in other issues. For instance, he may be very careful with shul decorum, but his appearances at minyan are not very frequent.

    My two cents worth is:

In the first case, the person is an absolute hypocrite.

    Moderators:

Please take these words off your site ASAP – they don’t belong here.

    4) How do you get rid of yeshivish roaches? with Frummeh Raid (not my own line)

“Overall, I still would be hesitant abut allowing a free exchange of email addresses. (Am I a hypocrite?)”

    – No, sensible. I’m not advocating free exchange of email addresses, as that can cause problems as well (dai lechakima berimiza). I am pointing out that in some cases it may make sense, where it can clearly be beneficial, to allow contact.

    Joseph-

…(without agreeing or disagreeing with your point)…

    – Feel free to disagree – it’s your right and I won’t take it personally.

Another “contact” circumstance I was thinking of bringing up was posters meeting for lunch, but I decided not to mention it.

    …until now. ;p

in reply to: Revealing Personal Info in the CR #634007

    Joseph-

In both cases you give, I think it would be extremely unlikely that an individual with ulterior motives would know frum lingo and be so driven to put on such an act.

In the case of the runners, they can meet in, let’s say, Mendelson’s, with male relatives present. Alternately, find common friends or acquaintances. I’m sure there are other ways as well to filter out creepy poseurs.

In the case of someone who claims to be a shadchan, let him/her provide proof that they are indeed what they claim to be, via references, a known Rov, etc. before even considering contacting them.

Please realize that the “Ride Sharing” thread is already allowing contact for a good reason, even though a stranger in your car is potentially more risky – obviously in all these cases common sense and caution are important.

in reply to: Revealing Personal Info in the CR #634002

    intelligent-

I can understand that some people may be uncomfortable about meeting or even speaking to strangers they only know from this site.

    1) There are a couple of girls who found a common interest on the “running” thread, and wanted to meet up to go running together.

    2) The offer (not accepted) my wife and I extended to speak with a parent who was considering a school that I know quite well for her daughter.

    3) A couple of guys who are interested in the same sugya getting together to learn (I haven’t seen it happen yet, but definitely a possibility).

    4) People who may have helpful advice on touchy and personal issues (medical, family, etc.) based on their own experiences (such as one person who posted about the difficulty their son was having finding a yeshiva that met his needs).

    – Once again, how can I possibly not offer to help with something as important as this? The rabonim / conference call arrangement described above can apply here, too.

    5) A shadchan who may want to pass along his/her info to a single on this site based on stated interests and hashkofos.

Many people, probably including you, will disagree with some or all of my thinking.

Basically, in all of the above cases, I am weighing the good that can be done vs. the risk of contacting someone unknown.

This is also factoring in that this is a frum site and most posters have left somewhat of a trail as to what they’re like, how they think, and what their hashkofos are.

The Mishna Berura in question can be seen here:

    http://www.dailyhalacha.com/MBerura/Images/383.jpg

The entire sefer can be viewed or downloaded from:

    http://www.hebrewbooks.org/14170

(Yasher koach to “hebrewbooks” for making the entire Mishna Berura [as well as many other seforim] available online).

Nothing that was said here merited rudeness, rancor, or disrespect. There are no opinions or corrections expressed here in a strident manner that could not have been made equally well politely. Machlokes over halocha or learning leshaim shomayim can be invigorating and geshmak. Unpleasantness between frum people is disturbing.

I was not referring to you. I was originally not going to confirm or deny any “who are you referring to” questions, but not at the expense of leaving someone else feeling bad. The poster(s) I was referring to said nothing wrong, but would not want their identit(ies) revealed because of the personal nature of info they revealed.

    charlie brown-

Thank you. It’s nice to see people being so concerned about yenem’s kavod and feelings.

    People-

There are some issues here that don’t have a “one size fits all” answer.

    For instance:

“If you’re afraid of being unmasked, never post anything that could be embarrassing”

    What about..

    1) – a baal teshuva who was frum-from-birth, went off the derech, and is now back who would like to give helpful advice from a been-there-done-that perspective?

    2) – someone who experienced an abusive spouse and wants to explain that simply “not telling” when it comes to shidduch info is not always the correct approach?

    3) – someone who is having agmis nefesh from a child, be it academically, behaviorally, or hashkafically? The questioner and the answerer undoubtedly would like their privacy kept.

    4) – a young person who is having serious issues or doubts and needs someone to speak to, but doesn’t know where to turn?

    5) – someone who is having physical or mental health issues and/or questions and would like to find someone to speak to?

    6) – someone who is having difficulty with a social acquaintance, coworker, or family member and could use some advice?

    “Never give out contact info”

    What about…

    1) There are a couple of girls who found a common interest on the “running” thread, and wanted to meet up to go running together.

    2) The offer (not accepted) my wife and I extended to speak with a parent who was considering a school that I know quite well for her daughter.

    5) A shadchan who may want to pass along his/her info to a single on this site based on stated interests and hashkofos.

There are many, many more instances where it may be sensible to make exceptions.

I wish the editor and moderators much hatzlocha in making the correct judgments and decisions.

in reply to: Revealing Personal Info in the CR #633971

I agree for the most part with what “charlie brown” is saying.

I think that some people may try to find out someone’s real-world name because they find the person interesting or have formed an online friendship, and are afraid that one day the person may vanish, leaving no way to ever be contacted again.

There are also those who “unmask” other posters just for the vicarious “gotcha” thrill.

In both cases, this is not right (although the first is a lot more understandable).

As frustrating as it might be, the best thing to do is view friendships and associations formed on this site as ephemeral – an enjoyable diversion, but nothing of real substance.

At least one poster on this thread has revealed something personal that would preclude him/her from ever meeting someone from this site in the real world and revealing their SN(I can’t say anything more for obvious reasons).

It may even be a good idea to have a throwaway SN, or if you slip and reveal something personal, to create a new SN and abandon the old one to preserve privacy.

I requested on another thread that the mods not “bust” multiple SNs with the same IP, because potentially real harm can be caused.

I’m sure anyone who causes tzar to another person by revealing info that unmasks and embarrasses them feels rotten – this is a serious issue and the fact that it is being addressed is appreciated.

    Keep up the good work.

“Dulce et Decorum Est” is not one I ever heard of, but I don’t know much about poems (most of those I remember are from school assignments, or randomly stumbled across, a la “Mimsy Were The Borogoves” in the sci-fi short by the same name).

I can see that it paints a clear and vivid picture of the misery of a WWI infantryman, and the denouement of the “heroic death” sentiment expressed in the title reminds me of “All Quiet On The Western Front” – when the soldiers tricked into joining the army get to confront their old schoolmaster, “Territorial Kantorek”, about his exhortations to join up.

Do not go gentle into that good night by Dylan Thomas – an entreaty against the acceptance of old age’s infirmity and death’s inevitability. Ironically written by a shikkur who drank himself to death at a young age.

I Have a Rendezvous with Death by Alan Seeger – haunting, well written, and prescient poem by an American volunteer fighting in WWI. As he foretold, he died in combat while still in his twenties.

    Typing in Hebrew:

Microsoft has instructions for enabling Hebrew typing on a Windows XP computer here:

    http://www.microsoft.com/globaldev/handson/user/xpintlsupp.mspx

I set it up on my computer, and can now toggle back-and-forth from Hebrew to English by pressing Alt + Left Shift. The cursor in the “post” window that I am now using to type this looks like a golf flag on a stick, with the flag pointing right when I type in English, and left when typing in Hebrew.

A picture that can be helpful with the key layout until you actually mark your keys can be found here:

    http://www.qsm.co.il/Images/keyboard.gif

The instructions from Microsoft’s site (sans MS’s illustrations)(for XP computers):

    Add Language Support

    1. Go to Control Panel.

    2. Click on Date, Time, Language, and Regional Options.

    3. Click on Regional and Language Options.

    4. The Regional and Language Options applet appears.

    5. Click on the Languages tab.

    6. Under Supplemental language support, select the check box beside the applicable language collection. Install files for complex script and right-to-left languages. (The complex script and right-to-left languages include Arabic, Armenian, Georgian, Hebrew, the Indic languages, Thai, and Vietnamese)

    7. Click OK or Apply. You will prompted to insert the Windows CD-ROM or point to a network location where the files are located (on my computer, the files were found and installed without my needing to specify a location – ICOT). After the files are installed, you must restart your computer.

    Add Keyboard/Input Method Editor

    1. Follow steps 1 – 5 from “Add Language Support” above.

    2. Under “Text services and input languages,” click on the “Details…” button.

    3. Under Installed Services, click “Add…”

    4. In the Add Input Language dialog box, click the input language and keyboard layout or Input Method Editor (IME) you want to add.

    5. You should now see a language indicator in the System Tray (located at bottom right hand corner of the desktop by default)

NOTE: You can switch between different input methods by pressing the left Alt + Shift keys or the right Alt + Shift keys

Going to the Microsoft page and making sure you are comfortable with their instructions is strongly recommended. If you find this confusing, you should probably not try it – or let someone more knowlegeable perform the update; better safe than sorry.

    Don’t give up.

It can be very frustrating to spend lots of time formatting something and then not have it come out properly, but as many posters (including moi) experienced on the HTML thread, eventually perseverance pays off.

It looks to me like the problem with your post is that your spacing was lost.

    I suggest:

    1) Start with something simple (to avoid the frustration of lots of lost time on failed attempts).

    2) Don’t forget to prefix your art with a backtick (the character below the tilde [~] on the upper-left of your keyboard that looks like an apostrophe). This will preserve spaces between characters, and force the use of a fixed-width font.

We probably should start a second HTML thread – any volunteers?

    qwertyuiop-

I like puzzles (especially the logic type) and trivia. When my youngest “twists my arm” I’ll occasionally play hangman, but it’s not my favorite.

    havesomeseichel-

The only ways I know of writing the Hebrew letters are:

    1) Use the “Character Map” application as described above. The “Times New Roman” font has Hebrew letters that can be cut-and-pasted into posts.

    2) Do a google search for “hebrew typewriter”. That’s how I typed the post in another thread quoting the Biur Halocha from the Mishna Berura.

Either way it is a laborious process and took me a while – you may want to just cut-and-paste from above posts. Don’t forget to precede your posts with the backtick character if you’re making the “squares” I did, in order to force a fixed-width font.

Oops – forgot to force a fixed-width font:

    There are two ways:

“Hangman” isn’t my cup of tea (sorry!) but since several people appear to be interested in playing, why don’t you take turns “hosting”?

To answer the question you asked here:

    http://www.theyeshivaworld.com/coffeeroom/topic/the-laboratory-try-your-html-formatting-experiments-here/page/5#post-24126

    “Why is everything under points?”

Because the site software doesn’t handle it very well if you include the <li> tag in your post without having a <ul> (Unordered List) or <ol> (Ordered List) tag beforehand.

    In other words:

    <ul>
    <li>Red
    <li>Orange
    <li>Yellow
    </ul>

    will display just fine:

    • Red
    • Orange
    • Yellow

    <li>Red
    <li>Orange
    <li>Yellow

Will make a mess of the rest of the page by assuming all of the following posts are list items.

Sorry for not answering your question on the HTML thread before it closed.

    Joseph-

Thank you for the info/confirmation – those were guesses on my part.

Re: the IP info we were discussing on the other thread: agreed, most of the revealed info is useless for those playing detective. For those living in cities with a relatively small frum population (i.e. Phoenix, Dublin, Denver, Jo’berg etc.) the location can be much more revealing. Also, a particular IP can and has revealed multiple IDs using the same access point. (For the truly paranoid, a “war-driver” can pick up an unprotected WAP and get your IP from that as well. This is not a realistic concern.)

    Joseph-

I’m guessing that we’re not allowed to edit our own posts because that would provide a way for a sneaky individual to bypass the moderation process.

I’ll further guess that a one-minute window is the minimum interval for self-editing that the site software allows – otherwise it makes no sense (to me) for such a short interval to exist.

(nossond- btw – your divrei Torah are excellent).

    Thank you.

From a “square” such as yours truly, this is about as imaginative as it gets.

    kapusta-

You’re very welcome. I am not a pro, but I am happy to pass on any knowledge I have picked up over time.

To address your questions in order:

    2) Moving quicker in between sites: if you mean going to a different site within the same browser window, this is probably a connection speed issue.
