    qwertyuiop-

    That’s a registry entry.

    It appears on the right-hand window of the regedit application, under the “Name” column.

    I’m getting a little concerned – if you can’t find this easily, or find the instructions difficult or confusing, it may be time to back off and get help.

    Here’s quick-and-dirty HTML that you can use to test your simple code.

    Cut and paste everything below, and save it as file “Tester.htm” on your computer’s desktop.

    You can then use it to try simple experiments (fonts, URLs, colors, etc.)

    <html>
    <head>
    <title>HTML Tester</title>

    <SCRIPT LANGUAGE="JavaScript">
    function showhtml(){
    /* alert(form1.htmlcode.value);
    div1.style.borderWidth='44px'; */
    div1.innerHTML = form1.htmlcode.value;
    }
    </SCRIPT>
    </head>
    <body>

    <form id=form1>

    <p>Enter some HTML code here, then click DISPLAY to see it rendered

    <br />
    <input type="button" value=" DISPLAY " onClick="showhtml()">
    <br />
    <textarea name="htmlcode" rows=12 cols=100>

    Just remember…

    -This is not guaranteed to work.

    -If you come across something you are unsure of, stop. I’d hate for you to end up with a dead PC. In most cases, my philosophy is “go for it”, but with registry edits it’s “better safe than sorry”.

    RoshYeshivah-

    The backtick is required both before and after your art.

    teen-

    I’d replace the embedded backticks with apostrophes, since they’re more similar. Obviously asterisks are fine as your personal preference.)

    Once again, you’re very welcome – good job picking up the “teaching” baton.

    Mods/Editor- I attempted to send this info several hours ago, but it didn’t post. I’m assuming it was skipped or deleted accidentally, since it contains nothing objectionable, and no URLs (although it contains registry info, which to a cursory read-thru, may look like a URL). If I’m missing something, when you don’t post this I’ll get the hint.

    qwertyuiop-

    Googling windowsi386lang brought up several hits.

    The info below is from one that I thought was useful, and addresses your issue:

    First, set folder options to see hidden and system folders. Go to the Control Panel/Folder Options, and on the View tab, set the advanced options so you can see hidden and system files.

    Specifically:

    – Enable (check) “Display the contents of system folders”

    – Enable (check) “Show hidden files and folders”

    – Disable (uncheck): “Hide protected operating system files (recommended)”

    I also recommend that you disable (uncheck) “hide extensions for known file types”. Then open Windows Explorer to C:Windows and see if there is an I386 folder here. You should also see on that is called ServicePackFiles if you have installed either SP1 or SP2. If they are in these locations, continue on. If not, you need to determine where they are before proceeding.

    Now, click start/run and type regedit, click ok. Expand the plus (+) signs to reach this key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionSetup

    Click on the setup folder so you can see the associated strings in the right pane. Double-click on the one called sourcepath, you should see “C:Windows” (without the quotes) in the valuedata line, but you probably just see your CD drive letter. Change it and click ok. Now check the ServicePackSourcePath, it should read “c:windowsServicePackFiles” (again without the quotes). It probably does, but if not you need to change this one as well. Click ok, then close the registry editor.

    Now retry adding the appropriate language(s). What we’ve done here is to redirect the system to look at the hard drive store of the system files rather than prompting to insert the CD. Manufacturers like Gateway commonly place the system files on the hard drive, the recovery CD is provided only as a backup to reinstall the operating system and cannot be used like a retail CD to add system components.

    If you are unfamiliar with the registry or regedit, I suggest you don’t try this. Either get someone more knowledgeable, or a pro, to perform the update. If the registry gets “messed up”, you may end up with a dead computer, that will need everything (operating system and software) reinstalled.

    Hatzlocha.

    I haven’t had much luck googling Hebrew language without cd xp ime, and other such combinations.

    The only eitzas I saw that I would suggest trying are:

    1) When prompted for the cd, try pointing to the windowsi386lang subdirectory.

    -or-

    2) Borrow a friend’s xp cd, and see if you can find a lang subdirectory that you can point to.

    Please let me know if either of these options is feasible (and if either works).

    2) do you no the true html for changing to fixed width font?

    “Courier” and “Courier New” are the fixed-width fonts I know of. The “font” tag can either be used by itself, or together with other tags.

    Here is a plain-vanilla “font” sample;

    <font face="courier" color="blue">This would be blue text.</font>

    Ta-dah! Good work.

    Re: “why was the POSTED 9 MINUTES AGO included in the link?” – I looked at the source for this page, and don’t see a closing </a> tag.

    teen-

    We knew you could do it!

    Re: “my question is…is the code the same for every site or is it exclusive for YWN?” – there are some tags that are true HTML, and some that are interpreted by the bbPress software and replaced with HTML tags (bbPress info courtesy of “Joseph”). That means that the backtick character that works as a displayable field on other sites is translated here as a code delimiter, and there may be other differences as well. Once clear difference is that tags that would display pictures, change colors, and/or change fonts are stripped out.

    Lesson 6 – my ASCII drawing collapsed when it posted!What happened?

    Remember, the first backtick “turns on” fixed-width formatting, the next backtick turns it off, etc.

    If your art has backticks embedded in it, it will in all likelihood “mess up” the way it appears once you post it.

    What to do:

    a) if the art is your own, don’t embed backticks.

    b) if you are cut-and-pasting, first paste your art into notepad, “replace all” backticks with apostrophes, then cut-and-paste the resulting art into the post.

    Your “Porsche” has embedded backticks.

    Lesson 5 – What’s with the period on the upper-left of ASCII art drawings?

    For some reason, the first line of any ASCII art drawing loses all leading spaces, even when a backtick is placed before the picture.

    Putting any character after the backtick seems to prevent this from happening.

    Since the period is the least obtrusive character, that’s what we use after the backtick, to preserve leading spaces on the first line of our art.

    If the drawing is starting in position one of the line anyway, no period is needed.

    That’s it.

    You all know as much as I do now.

    May I please be excused? My brain is empty (and I’d ? some sleep. Lullaby, and good night ??????…).

    Lesson 4 – Typing in Hebrew:

    Microsoft has instructions for enabling Hebrew typing on a Windows XP computer here:

    http://www.microsoft.com/globaldev/handson/user/xpintlsupp.mspx

    I set it up on my computer, and can now toggle back-and-forth from Hebrew to English by pressing Alt + Left Shift. The cursor in the “post” window that I am now using to type this looks like a golf flag on a stick, with the flag pointing right when I type in English, and left when typing in Hebrew.

    The instructions from Microsoft’s site (sans MS’s illustrations)(for XP computers):

    Add Language Support

    1. Go to Control Panel.

    2. Click on Date, Time, Language, and Regional Options.

    3. Click on Regional and Language Options.

    4. The Regional and Language Options applet appears.

    5. Click on the Languages tab.

    6. Under Supplemental language support, select the check box beside the applicable language collection. Install files for complex script and right-to-left languages. (The complex script and right-to-left languages include Arabic, Armenian, Georgian, Hebrew, the Indic languages, Thai, and Vietnamese)

    7. Click OK or Apply. You will prompted to insert the Windows CD-ROM or point to a network location where the files are located (on my computer, the files were found and installed without my needing to specify a location – ICOT). After the files are installed, you must restart your computer.

    Add Keyboard/Input Method Editor

    1. Follow steps 1 – 5 from “Add Language Support” above.

    2. Under “Text services and input languages,” click on the “Details…” button.

    3. Under Installed Services, click “Add…”

    4. In the Add Input Language dialog box, click the input language and keyboard layout or Input Method Editor (IME) you want to add.

    5. You should now see a language indicator in the System Tray (located at bottom right hand corner of the desktop by default)

    NOTE: You can switch between different input methods by pressing the left Alt + Shift keys or the right Alt + Shift keys

    Going to the Microsoft page and making sure you are comfortable with their instructions is strongly recommended. If you find this confusing, you should probably not try it, or, let someone more knowledgeable perform the update; better safe than sorry.

    I just switched to the Firefox browser, and the page looks fine. When someone creates a “li” tag without a “ul” or “ol” tag first, the rest of the page does not look good in Internet Explorer (IE). IE has a problem telling that the rest of the posts are not list items. One of the early posts on the page used the “li” tag in this manner.

    Lesson 2 – fixed font vs. proportional font:

    When trying ASCII art, a fixed-width font is needed. that means each character takes up the same width. Proportional fonts are more visually appealing on a letter, but wreck picture-drawing attempts.

    1) Fixed-width vs. proportional:

    a) Fixed width-

    wwwwwwwww

    iiiiiiiii

    b) proportional-

    wwwwwwwww

    iiiiiiiii

    Notice any difference in how the “i”s and “w”s line up?

    Another problem with the default appearance of posts is that multiple spaces between words is truncated to one space.

    a b c becomes a b c.

    How can a fixed-width font be selected, and spaces be preserved?

    Prefixing a backtick before the post, and appending another backtick at the end takes care of this.

    Lesson 1a – using quotes in the anchor tab causes the link to not work properly. Let’s try it without the quote marks:

    Apparently you had two quotes inside your tag in the previous post. I fixed it and also provided links within your lessons to the next parts. – YW Moderator-42

    Thank you for the extra 10 threads and posts per page.

    Just curious – is it possible to have a different number of threads per page and posts per page? You seem to change them both at the same time.

    Lesson 1- the basics:

    Each one of these is a HTML tag that is used to notify the browser that special formatting is needed. Most tags need to be used both before and after the text you want to mark, and two only need to be used before the text.

    Here are brief descriptions of each tag, and samples of how they work:

    Sample:

      Colors

    • red
    • orange
    • yellow

    <ol>Colors
    <li>red
    <li>orange
    <li>yellow
    </ol>

      Colors

    1. red
    2. orange
    3. yellow

    Let’s see how the above turns out.

    Depending on if it’s OK or not, the next post will either attempt to correct errors, or go on to lesson 2.

    SJSinNYC-

    I can’t claim to be an expert, either.

    I know a bit about household plumbing, which is where my knowledge of water hammer comes from (both water pipes and steam-heat systems).

    Tom Clancy gets the credit for my “cavitation” knowledge, since he mentions it in at least two of his books.

    in reply to: The Boxing Glove Shrimp (not kosher) #634915

    SJSinNYC-

    I’m not at all familiar with “bubble collapse” water hammer, but that does sound like part two of cavitation (part one being when the cavity forms).

    I’m sure Con Ed engineers are more knowledgeable than yours truly about fluid dynamics, as well as other things needed for power generation (hydroelectric, steam generation for Manhattan, etc.)

    SJSinNYC-

    I’m not sure what you mean by “two types”.

    Do you mean condensed water in a steam-heat system, as well as water in regular hot and cold water pipes?

    in reply to: The Boxing Glove Shrimp (not kosher) #634911

    SJSinNYC-

    Not really.

    Water hammer is caused by liquid (which is not compressible) coming to a sudden stop. The force of this jolting stop can actually break pipes. There are “air cushions” (I forget their actual name – they are basically empty tubes, sometimes twisted in a spiral, installed upside-down to keep their air bubble) that are sometimes installed by a sink, atop the hot and cold water lines, specifically to allow air compression and prevent “water hammer” when the faucet is suddenly flipped off.

    What “feivel” is describing is cavitation, which occurs when something (i.e. a submarine’s screw – this is a bane of submariners trying to avoid detection) is moving thru the water so quickly that the water separates, leaving a “bubble” that quickly closes again.

    “hakol min hashomayim” together with “gam zu letova”.

    If you see a deeper meaning, you over-darshened my post.

    Your point about “hakol min hashomayim” is on the money – I’ve had an occasion or two myself where something seemingly bad happened that later turned out for the better.

    2nd stanza:

    some like it in the pot, covered in mold” 🙂

    When I have a pot that has burned or baked-on cholent, stew, or soup, I find that letting water sit in it overnight makes most of the stuff come right off with minimal fuss. Of course, scrape it out over the toilet, unless you have a garbage disposal in the sink.

    Sorry, I’m not into cholent much. I’ll enjoy a good one, but it’s not one of my favorite foods.

    “get real there’s no one like that.”

    -I’m better at cold logic than at “warm and fuzzy” thinking, so let’s look at this logically:

    1) Many, many young adults (like yourself, I remember when I was sixteen, your thought process is not that of a young child) have questions, uncertainties, and guilt from things they have done.

    2) There are individuals and groups who know where you are coming from. Believe me, unless you’ve committed murder, they won’t be shocked. Their “ulterior motive” is to help out young people who are having a bumpy takeoff into adulthood.

    3) Their effectiveness is based on trust. Those who confide in them need to know that what they tell goes no further. If this trust is violated – even once, even with one person, word-of-mouth will let “the street” know that this person can’t be trusted. His effectiveness will be gone forever.

    4) Given the above factors, don’t you think it pays for such a person to keep your secrets? Don’t you think if he had betrayed a confidence you’d hear about it?

    I agree that a total stranger who you don’t know personally may well be a better choice – in the secular world most people want doctors (both physical and mental health) to be someone they don’t know, to avoid social embarrassment.
