Does anyone know how I can get these cute characters to work on a laptop w/ no numerics on the right?

Use whatever key is set up to turn on the “Num Lock” on your keyboard, then use those numeric keys.

in reply to: Inexpensive Family Vacations #769308

With the upcoming Memorial Day weekend, this thread may be useful.

If you’re looking for ideas of a place to go, there are several suggestions on this thread (including from yours truly).

If you’d like to add additional suggestions, they’d certainly be welcome.

If you have questions, perhaps other posters can help.

Some of the favorite memories people have are those of vacations taken with their families when they were kids.

It doesn’t have to be a long, expensive or elaborate vacation.

IMHO, if you have the opportunity to spend some time with your spouse and kids, “chap arein” (or “go for it” if you prefer English” ?).

    yid.period-

First of all, I commend your sesitivity and caring for yenem’s feelings, and hope this mida continues with your (IY”H, bs”t) future wife.

It’s not pleasant getting a “no”, but it’s part of the shidduch scene – just be as kind about it as possible.

It’s quite possible the girl doesn’t even know you’ll turn her down – usually the guy is asked if he’s interested first.

I understood your post was tznius related, and that it was something that you regard as quite black-and-white wrong.

Even in situations like this, simply saying “She sounds like a nice girl, but xyz is very important for me, so I’ll have to say no” should’nt be offensive.

There are many tznius-related factors – I won’t discuss them here – that different people have different levels of observance/hakpoda on.

I don’t think a shadchan would be offended if your personal preference for a shidduch is someone who’s more makpid/machmir on certain things than they are – I know I certainly wouldn’t be.

    Just be respectful.

in reply to: Describe Your Character #767803

People are a mixture of many qualities, both good and bad.

Even those who I admire have some negative traits, and even those who I despise have some positive ones.

All of the below traits are true for me, some at all times and some depending on the setting:

    analytical

    angry

    appreciative

    courageous

    cruel

    deceptive

    determined

    empathic

    encouraging

    fair

    fearful

    forgiving

    generous

    grabby

    grudge-bearing

    hard-working

    honest

    hot-tempered

    innovative

    intolerant

    kind

    lazy

    logical

    morose

    nervous

    obsessive

    resigned

    sarcastic

    selfish

    sharing

    sneaky

    sympathetic

    tolerant

    ungrateful

    unsympathetic

    upbeat

(despite the extensive list, I’m sure some were missed ?)

in reply to: Moving Tips #767838

    Also:

    – Box related items together.

    – Have the movers put the boxes in the appropriate rooms, to save you from excessive schlepping later.

    – Have more than one person available to watch and direct the movers.

    – Consider making arrangements to stay at your parents for the first night after the move, and possibly the first Shabbos.

    Good luck!

in reply to: Would you continue? #772368

    am yisrael chai-

It would really be a shame to allow a single unpleasant incident, caused by one person, to chase you away from something you enjoy.

The CR is a better place with posters like you.

Besides, from a totally selfish perspective, I’d hate to see someone who enjoys riddles and puzzles leave ?

    Would you continue?

Pretty much everyone here, including moi has been attacked, mocked and/or unjustly accused of something at some point.

It isn’t fun, regardless of who you are and who’s “attacking”.

Nonetheless, here’s my perspective on incidents like these:

    1) The person doesn’t know me, and their mistaken impression doesn’t change who I am.

    2) The person may have issues which I’m not aware of.

    3) The person may be a crank, who I won’t allow to affect what I do.

    4) Sometimes, if I feel there was a misunderstanding, I’ll try to explain myself in as dispassionate a way as possible. Other times, if I feel it won’t be helpful, or it will just further inflame the “attacker”, I’ll ignore it.

In an online forum environment, the CR is by far the most mentchlich forum I’ve seen.

Even so, not every person will be nice all the time.

So be it – the good still outweighs the bad by a wide margin, and it’s worth sticking around.

Not bad – I Googled your poem, and except for “Indeed” instead of “Perhaps”, you nailed it.

I never heard it before – it sounds a bit like the “Burma Shave” jingles (or maybe I’m just thinking that because of the word “billboard”).

I think that I shall never float

Something as lovely as a boat.

in reply to: What do you like about the CR? #967674

    Good question.

    There are several things:

    2) Enjoying the poems, limericks and stories written by the many talented writers who share their output here.

    4) The opportunity to help other posters with info I may have. Teaching other people new things.

    5) The opportunity to get info I need from other posters.

    7) Hearing points of view that differ from my own.

    8) Learning new stuff about topics I never followed.

    11) The many halacha posts and discussions that allow me to expand my knowledge and do a bit of learning while on this site. I will sometimes follow up something read here with my own research, so additional learning also gets done based on posts here.

There are a few ways to do it, but the easiest is just to press the <Alt> key and while holding it down type the “1” on the numeric keypad of your keyboard. The character will appear after you release the <Alt> key.

The numeric keys above your keyboard won’t work for this.

    <Alt> 1 = ?

    <Alt> 2 = ?

    <Alt> 3 = ?
