    Pac-/Man-

I don’t have firsthand experience or knowledge about this, but a quick Google search for “mobile broadband no contract” brought up several matches, including a Verizon offer.

My experience with Verizon’s coverage (cell phone, not broadband) in the Catskills has been very good.

The downside is you may need to purchase a $129 hardware device from Verizon before you can even start purchasing minutes.

for anyone who may want to get me off the hook… er, I mean take a crack at solving “Dr. Pepper”s earlier riddle, it’s reported below

Let’s say you have a table with equal distant parallel lines running the length of the table, as follows (viewed from above):

    ???????????????????????
    ???????????????????????
    ???????????????????????
    ???????????????????????
    ???????????????????????
    ???????????????????????

You randomly drop a pencil onto the table.

What are the chances of the pencil hitting a line?

Extra Credit- If the length of the pencil is shorter than the distance between two consecutive lines- what famous constant will you estimate?

(No asking “squeak”. you may ask “I can only try”, as he is typically clueless. [no, that’s not exactly how it was posted originally ?])

in reply to: Black & White and read all over #883636

    1) A piano with a nosebleed.

    2) Pravda (this is an oldie. if you’re under 30, Google it. trust me ?)

    3) President Obama’s health care plan.

    4) Tomato rice soup. With a fly in it.

    5) An African-American astronaut. In his spacesuit. On Mars.

    6) A Bloody Mary, made with the aforementioned whiskey brand.

    7) Three painters. A Caucasian named “Black” who’s painting a firetruck. His partner, an African-American names “White”. And, the new hire, a native American, who came to work dressed as a crossword puzzle.

    Dr. Pepper-

    I’m afraid I’m totally stumped.

I tried to Google various things to help, including the constant you referenced, but no luck.

The factors I can think of are width of the table, width of the lines, width and length of the pencil, spacing between the lines, and the probability of the angle between the pencil and the lines.

Why don’t you repost it here? Maybe some of the sharp new folks can solve it.

in reply to: Good Shabbos! #1135688

I took a quick look at the Mishna Berura 108.

He gives examples of when not to daven a makeup Shmoneh Esrei, from which it seems pretty clear that in the case of one forgetting it by Shachris, not davening Mussaf, and then remembering it by Mincha time, he can say an extra Shemona Esrei then.

If one davened Mussaf, there is no makeup.

in reply to: Good Shabbos! #1135684

    blinky-

If you’re in the Eastern time zone, it’s too late for Shachris and too early for Mincha.

Does anyone know what one is supposed to do if they remember they forgot Ya’ale V’yovo after the zman tefilah?

Is it the same as missing Shachris, where one says two Shemona Esreis?

Is it any different for a man or a woman?

in reply to: Good Shabbos! #1135682

    Gut Shabbos.

in reply to: The Riddle Thread…. #1069647

    am yisrael chai-

I like halacha riddles because they teach worthwhile info and count as talmud Torah.

I have no clue, but here are a couple of guesses:

    1) Before Simchas Torah Mussaf, after someone has had a “few too many”, and needs to sober up a bit for davening.

    2) One who has forgotten Havdala on Motzei Shabbos, and needs to make it later in the week without aish and besomim? (don’t know this halocha well)

If, as I expect, the above two answers are incorrect, can you answer the following:

    1) Is it davka coffee? any drink? any food?

    2) Is it davka Shemona Esrei or a full tefilah?

    Ctrl Alt Del-

No, it isn’t necessary – it’s a personal preference, or a double harchoka if you will.

However, you may want to consider writing G-d instead of spelling it out, and you should definitely capitalize “Hashem” (or any other reference to H-shem, including “He”, where appropriate).

    Y.W. Editor-

It’s easy for those of us who don’t know the time, effort, and expense that you put into maintaining this site to request that you take down this thread as “bombmaniac” has requested.

Nonetheless, he put his heart into writing what he did, and it would likely do significant good if it could reach a wider audience.

As a possible compromise, would it be possible to take this thread down for now and then restore it after it appears in print media?

in reply to: Hatzolah in Manhattan #774003

As “John Doe” said, there were Hatzolah ambulances and many Hatzolah members active in lower Manhattan on 9/11.

At least one ambulance was destroyed by the collapsing towers.

A Google search for “Hatzolah 9/11” will bring up some of the chilling pictures taken that day.

It was only due to chasdei H-shem that no Hatzolah members lost their lives.

    BSD-

The “split ductless” units you describe are in many yeshivas and shuls.

Why don’t you see one there and decide if you like it?

The advice “emlf” gave is spot-on.

You need to know what your requirements are; room size, sun exposure, under a roof, flat roof, etc. – otherwise it’s like buying clothes without knowing the person’s size or even if it’s for a man or a woman.

As a kid, I was a big reader and I still enjoy reading when I have time.

Also, trivia, how things work, and history interest me, and I read the news daily so some stuff gets retained.

Basically, this gives me a broad but shallow range of knowledge on a variety of subjects.

Three statisticians are deer hunting with bows and arrows in the woods. They spot a deer and the first one shoots. His arrow goes flying ten feet off to the deer’s left. The second guy takes aim and shoots, but his aim is off. His arrow goes flying ten feet to the deer’s right. Suddenly the third statistician starts jumping up and down excitedly and yells, “We got him! We got him!

I’ve always been taught that ???? ??? ends at 6000 max…do you know differently?

I learned that Moshiach will come by (our calendar) year 6000.

After he comes, I believe there are differences of opinion as to what the world will be like.

I didn’t factor that in my earlier reply.

When I was a kid, I would show a 1961 Lincoln penny upside down and say “look – they put the date upside down by mistake”.

Several people agreed, at least for a few seconds.
