(for the purpose of the examples below, let’s assume all years have 365 days)
a) Odds of a couple sharing the same birthday: 1/365
b) Odds of a couple and their child sharing the same birthday: 1/133,225
c) Odds of a couple and their child sharing the same birthday, and that day being July 19: 1/48,627,125
The article used number “c)” and it probably should’ve used “b)”

Welcome back!
Thank you, but I haven’t gone anywhere.
OK, to continue:
The first word on the second line is clearly “MONDAY”. This gives us the Y, leaving:
MEET AT ‘D MIDTOWN MANHATTAN
The last line pretty clearly is “SAY OK WHEN YOU DECODE”
This gives us the S, K, U and C, leaving:
MEET AT KD MIDTOWN MANHATTAN
SAY OK WHEN YOU DECODE
The first two words on line 3 are clearly “ILL HAVE”.
The cryptogram is now solved, except for the time.
Also, how did you link Joseph’s post to “this post?”
Like so:
<strong><a href="http://www.theyeshivaworld.com/coffeeroom/topic/the-riddle-thread/page/8#post-17125">this post</a></strong>
The “strong” tags bold the text, and the “a” tags make it a link.
And why did you use that post as an aid?
As a demo of “shortcut” usage in decryption.
Can someone explain in a methodical, clear way the continuation of the solution for the product/sum riddle above?
“Dr. Pepper” did so, where the riddle was originally posted. He started with odd/even and prime number logic similar to yours.

OK.
Typically, in cryptogram solving, you would look for things such as letter frequency, double-letters, frequent letter combinations, single-letter words and other pattern-related items.
Replacing all D, R, P and E left this:
Replacing all M and T left this:
Replacing all I, O, W, N and A left this:
MEET AT ‘D MIDTOWN MANHATTAN

The 16x PCI slot is what you’d use for your graphics card, since it has much faster throughput than the 1x PCI slot.
My old desktop has an ISA slot, which is a predecessor to PCI.
The graphic card specs will tell you if it’s PCI compatible; on Newegg, the following is a spec – “Interface PCI Express 2.1 x16”
What “ronrsr” says is true – you probably don’t and won’t need a graphics card.
Also, I’d be surprised if the number of USB ports isn’t enough – your new PC comes with several.

Although the candidates already seem to be in full campaign mode, it’s more than a year to the RNC convention, let alone the general election – I am not familiar with the candidates or their positions, only that Bachmann seems to be the Tea Party fave, and that she signed the Family Leader pledge last week.
As the election gets closer, I intend to read up on the candidates and have a better idea on who I like, dislike, and am scared of.
I plan on voting, since I think that’s a privilege and responsibility we should take seriously, but realistically recognize that as a New Yorker the electoral college makes that somewhat meaningless.

I’ll start with what’s probably a dumb question: Is your computer still under warranty? If so, have a pro fix it on their own dime.
Here’s advice from someone who’s not a “computer doctor” (that implies a level of professionalism and expertise), but rather a “computer potchkerer” (self explanatory).
Popping keys off and putting them back on is a risky proposition with laptop keyboards and their scissor-type key mountings. I’ve done it several times as a last alternative, with about a 60% success rate. Don’t try it except as a last resort.
Desktop keyboards are constructed differently, and I’ve had a 100% success rate removing and replacing them – I’ll even do it lechatchila just to clean underneath them.
OK, now for the bad news.
Keys that stop working, “overwork” (create repeat strokes for a single keypress), or type the wrong letter have always, in my limited experience, indicated a “shot” keyboard that required replacing. This has occurred when something spilled on the keyboard. Even when the spill dried, the problem remained.
There’s nothing to lose by trying to blast under the keyboard with compressed air, and I’d probably try it before operating, but don’t get your hopes up.
Now, the (possibly) good news.
If you Google “<your model> replace keyboard” (sans quotes), you’ll likely find instructions with pictorial illustrations that some kind person(s) posted. It may not be that big a deal to replace the keyboard. Personally, I’ve changed my keyboard three times (don’t ask ) and removed a circuit board to solder, all using how-to info posted by someone else. A mini screwdriver set from Radio Shack may be the only tool(s) you need. Obviously, there’s some risk involved.
A replacement keyboard can usually be bought pretty cheaply. I got two new ones for $20 – $25 apiece, and a used one for $12 – $13.
Since I need my laptop PC for work, I borrowed a USB keyboard from my job and used that until I changed the notebook’s keyboard – perhaps you can do that as well, for now.
If you’d like to post your model number here, maybe someone can take a look at the keyboard replacement procedure and opine on the degree of complexity involved in its replacement.

“what about dina dimalchusa“
As far as the legal monetary obligation potentially being higher than the halachik one? A while back, “Joseph” said that in such cases, with two Jews, halacha takes precedence. I asked Rav Belsky if that was true, and (IIRC) he didn’t answer yes or no, but said the two parties should work it out, which sounds like a “yes” to me. If one of the parties isn’t Jewish, I have no idea what the halachik obligation would be – i.e. if it would be the dina d’malchusa civil obligation or not.
I can only tryMemberAs far as the chiyuv of the mazik to make good for the actual hezek, I can’t imagine how this would be mesira.
The issues I see here are:
1) Would the mazik suffer additional penalties, such as losing his/her license, or even more severe penalties for hit-and-run? If so, would this constitute mesira?
2) Halachikly, I believe the only chiyuv the mazik has is for the lessening of the value of the damaged object, while U.S. law may carry a greater obligation; that of restoring the damaged area into a like-new state. Does the fact that the mazik may be civilly liable for a greater amount than halacha dictates play a part here?

Airlines are notorious for posting one number as a fare, but then adding all kinds of “fees” and “charges” to bring the real number up quite a bit. This also makes it difficult-to-impossible to comparison shop different airlines, since their real fare is hidden.
Senator Schumer has been fighting the airlines for a while now in an effort to force them to honestly and openly post the true price of tickets.
Out of curiosity:
1) What was the “real” fare for the Florida tickets?
2) What fees and charges were added to bring it up from the $89 advertised fare to whatever the true cost was?

1) Get witnesses’ names.
2) Take pictures of the damage, the cars’ positions, and any other pertinent info.
3) File a police report.
There was a fellow in yeshiva whose parked car was hit by a truck. The truck driver was very apologetic, gave his info, and promised to pay for the damage. He then got two friends to lie and claim that they were witnesses, filed a false police report that the yeshiva guy had been pulling out of the spot when he was hit, and caused him major headaches.
Another frum person who had an already damaged car was in a minor accident with a relative. The chrome trim on the already damaged car was held in place with tape. He proceeded to remove the tape, let the trim fall to the street, and when the police came he claimed that it had been torn off in the accident.

Once you open that page, select “Dell Vostro 230 Mini Intel Dual-Core E5800 3.2GHz Mini Tower Desktop w/ 22in LCD $399”
It’s a very basic desktop PC for $399, free shipping, plus tax.
It comes with a large LCD monitor, a DVD reader/burner, USB keyboard and optical mouse, 64 bit Windows 7 home premium, 15 months of free antivirus, and a stripped-down version of MS Word and MS Excel.
It does not have a dial-up modem, card reader and other items that come standard with better machines, although you can pay more on the “customize” options and get them.

It’s also true that if five “push” pieces is the default, a variance of 2 would put the range from 3 to 7, not 3 to 9.

“Moderator-80” is correct. The hardware manual for that model does specify four memory slots.
Here’s the link to the manual page, select the “Hardware Replacement Guide”:

I remember that there was/is certain memory type that required matched pairs, but for most memory types, the only requirement is that all the memory modules should be the same speed.
Also, if you have different sized memory modules, the larger one should go in the first slot, for efficiency’s sake.

If buying from Dell or Lenovo, only buy what they have on sale. If it’s not on sale, you probably overpaid. (This applies to buying from them directly.)
I’ve bought refurbs a couple of times and done well, but I also have heard from people who had bad refurb experiences. Usually the warranty is a lot shorter than what you’d get with new – most commonly 90 days vs. a year.
I won’t say you should or shouldn’t buy a refurb, only that you should be aware of the pluses and minuses involved.
I had a bad experience with a dishonest salesperson once when purchasing from Best Buy. I’ve also had unpleasant, rude, lazy and inattentive salespeople in the Bay Parkway store in Brooklyn. I know it’s not fair to hold it against the entire chain, but when I buy from them now (and I still do, occasionally), I make sure I have all my info before buying, and I don’t simply trust what the salesperson says.

No problem.
Plus it’s always nice to see new words, and I think this is the first time I’ve seen “brusque” on this forum ?
Dell and Lenovo both have very good names as far as reliability.
Newegg is a company I’ve been buying from for several years and I’m very satisfied with them (and amazon and buy).
If you have a pretty good idea about the specs and price you’re looking for, I suggest checking out Deals2buy and Techbargains for good prices, then reading specs and reviews (both professional and man-on-the-street) to see if it looks like a good machine.
The more tech-savvy you are, the more I recommend buying based on model instead of just the brand. A little-known company can sometimes make one particular machine that offers the best bang for the buck.
I can only tryMemberModerator-80-
