Thanksgiving strikes me as a good day for Jews (or anyone else) to give thanks to America for giving us Jews a safe place to live and thrive. No country (other than Israel, which so heavily depends on the US) has been more welcoming and provided more opportunity for Jews. Try to imagine the fate of world Jewry during and after the Holocaust, or the next attempt at a holocaust, without a nation as big and powerful and welcoming as the US. Until Moshiach, I am staying right here.

To ujm: If you have 10 men ready to start davening, and two are dark-skinned, and you think they do not count for a minyan because they are Ethiopian, what is the polite way to say to the dark-skinned men that they are not Jewish and therefore do not count for a minyan?

And if the other 8 men, white and known to your satisfaction to be Jewish, want to count the dark-skinned men for the minyan, what do you say to the 8 white Jews?

And will ujm, and everyone else, remember that Hashem knows who is Jewish, and if you miss a day of davening, that alone will not send you to gehinom. But repeatedly insulting or being unkind to anyone will increase your chances of going to gehinom.

I am confident that Hashem is not as pickey as most of the commenters. Hashem knows what is in your heart and mind. Davening is as much for the benefit of the davener and Klal Yisrael as it is for Hashem.

The OP puts too much emphasis on race as evidence that Ethiopian Jews are not Jewish. Race is an unsound genetic construct. If the genetic links among different groups of Jews are as the OP says, then race does nothing to support his/her position. I am not familiar with the genetic links among various groups of Jews

To Abba_s: I think I remember that Connecticut incident. It was a chimpanzee, which is way cuter than a gorilla (but not as cute as tiger cubs, which, after a short while, become tigers), so cute does not help. And the face ripped off was a neighbor’s, not the owner’s. Not that these details matter, but some people have trouble grasping the obvious, e.g., wild animals, even cute ones, are … wild.

A major financial supporter of my shul is a woman doctor with a highly profitable practice. Should the shul turn down her contributions and give back the money she has donated over the years? Is she taking money that rightfully be going to a man like ujm?

Years ago I had a friend who lived in Israel until he was in her early teens, moved to the US, got very well-educated, got an engineering PhD, moved back to Israel. She said back then – early 1970’s – that life is hard in Israel, but she wanted to live there. She was secular but she loved Israel and lives there to this day. If you are thinking that life in Israel is one long picnic – or maybe a long Kiddush or tisch – think again and stay in the US. You are not cut out for it.

I have seen some men wearing hats covered with plastic shopping bags when it is raining, presumably to protect the hat. Two problems:

    1. If the hat is felt, it does not need protection from rain. Felt is made to recover from being rained on.

    2. Putting a plastic shopping bag on a hat looks … well, … stupid, hardly the way one would stand before any king, especially the King of kings.

Another thing: One of the posters referred to a certain hat as “hamburg”. I believe that hat is worn by the counter personnel at fast food restaurants.

To ujm, re your comment, posted 10/18, 2:22 pm: Your first paragraph refers to “everything the Republicans did for him [Powell]”. Evidently, you think Powell gave Republicans nothing in return. I think he gave them plenty.

Your second paragraph begins, “Obviously evidence will, by definition, not be left visible ….”
If evidence is not visible, how do we have evidence of anything. And you refer to a “careful analysis,” but you offer only conclusion with no analysis. You don’t name a single “more qualified” person to fill the positions he did. And, whether you know it or not, you state that Republicans appoint unqualified people to important positions. Is that the party you support?

First of all, I never knew that fate had a mayor. If it does, I would expect Hashem to elect her or him.

As for the New York City mayoral race, like many elections in a two-party democracy, the electoral choice often comes down to the question of who is less stupid. Adams is clearly less stupid.

And I cannot take seriously anyone who would take Sliwa seriously.
