March 2, 2022 1:03 pm at 1:03 pm in reply to: NPR Is a Joke and Shouldn’t be Funded by Tax Dollars! #2065610hujuParticipant
A number of posters have correctly stated that NPR gets approximately 10% of its funding directly or indirectly from federal government sources, for the most recent year for which financial statements are available. And NPR is not a joke. Its reporting is generally accurate.
I would be curious to know the extent to which other news media get revenue from federal advertising or other sources of federal revenue.
hujuParticipantTo GadolKadofi: To answer your question – Chabad cares about the silly views of non-frum Jews. It reaches out to change their silly views. Frum Jews (and all other Jews) need all the Jews they can get. What, if anything, are you doing to help.
hujuParticipantI am a registered Democrat and unregistered liberal, and the Hunter Biden business smells awful to me. But Trump and the GOP-led Justice Dept. had 4 years to investigate him, and they failed to do so, or did investigate and found nothing. Same thing with Hillary, whom I dislike as much as anybody else dislikes her.
As for Joe Biden’s handling of Ukraine, it’s too soon to say, and it is a hard matter to handle. Do you have family in the US Armed Forces? I do, which does not make me any smarter than anybody else, but I am glad our president understands what it means to lose a family member in combat. It’s worse than bone spurs, though I do not have those either.
hujuParticipantIn addition to what the OP said, Trump is a coward, with or without bone spurs. Also, he is monumentally stupid, and I am starting to think that maybe, just maybe, Putin has information about Trump that would embarrass the otherwise shameless Trump.
And would the Trumpkopfs among us explain why Israel’s “greatest friend” has so many supporters among the anti-Semitic militias, and how the frum Trumpkopfs reconcile that with their support for Trump.
hujuParticipantI thought superbubbles were what Superman used for a bath.
hujuParticipantTheGoq’s comment from 2011 is still on point.
hujuParticipantIrish. So silky, friendly, trainable.
hujuParticipantFull of bull. Being an [donkey]. Chicken. Pig. Horse’s rear end. Monkey’s uncle. Dirty dog. Turkey. Ham actor. Udder fool.
hujuParticipant1. Saran Wrap.
2. Liquid Prell.
hujuParticipantPeople were showing off their money long before social media. Consider handbags covered in someone else’s initials, overpriced automobiles, overpriced homes, overpriced tallises, elite universities, shirts with reptiles or horses on them. I grew up surrounded by that junk, but I learned that it was, well, junk.
hujuParticipantTo the Mods: Do the first 5 posts comply with your rule for making the posts in English?
Well, the first three are really 2, and the last 2 seem to be English. Did you mean the first 2?
hujuParticipantParticipant’s joke about wanting to play the violin badly goes back at least to the time of Abraham (Lincoln). He said when he first saw Mary Todd at a dance that he was immediately smitten and wanted to dance with her in the worst way. And she told him he did.
February 16, 2022 12:45 pm at 12:45 pm in reply to: question for competent lawyers and anyone else who knows law #2061016hujuParticipantTo CTLawyer: I know a bit of aviation law, and you have nicely and correctly summarized it. Unfortunately, you are preaching to the unsaved, who believe what they want, whether it is correct or not.
February 9, 2022 6:15 pm at 6:15 pm in reply to: President Biden’s Supreme Court nomination #2059063hujuParticipantTo Gadol Hadorah: I well remember Republican Senator Roman Hruska’s plea for mediocrity, but I have forgotten the last part of the comment you referred to, i.e., that all judges cannot be Brandeis’es, Cardozo’s or Frankfurter’s. It is curious that he picked 3 Jewish justice of the Supreme Court to single out as examples of some elite group. I have no idea whether Hruska was being anti-Semitic, anti-elitiest, pro-stupid or something else altogether.
For what it is worth, I think we are overdue for a justice who is not from the 5 Boroughs (e.g., Kagan, Sotomayor, Ginsburg, Scalia), the Northeast, Harvard or Yale or a prep school. The possible nominees so far include a woman who went to a state university and state university law school. I think her time is long overdue, whether she is black, white or other.
hujuParticipantTell nearby shuls that this guy is a fantastic mentsch, and hope they encourage his to quit your shul and join theirs.
hujuParticipantTo the opening poster: Are you talking about American bochurim or Israelis? Going to Israel from America is expensive. If that is who you are talking about, I think those bochurim should learn how hard it is to earn the airfare from the US to Israel.
hujuParticipantI am fairly certain that all the explanations of Whoopie Goldberg’s name discussed above are wrong. And of course, ujm’s story is wronger than most. Was he trying to be funny or factual? He/she is not good at either.
As for her given name, Caryn, how ironic – “Karen” is slang for an annoying white woman who considers herself entitled to special privileges and likes to complain about black people.
January 30, 2022 3:18 pm at 3:18 pm in reply to: Joe Biden is not the 46th President of the United States of America. #2056086hujuParticipantTo the OP: You listed Cleveland only once, he served one term after Benjamin Harrison in addition to one term before Benjamin Harrison. He is commonly counted as the 22nd and 24th president. That may or not make sense, but that is how the historians count presidents.
January 28, 2022 12:15 pm at 12:15 pm in reply to: YWN CR Poasters. Do you believe that the Tianamen Square Massacre happened? #2055725hujuParticipantTo ujm: Your response to my request for 3 reliable news sources is senseless. How can you have any idea what goes on in the world if you don’t think there are 3 reliable news sources?
As for your suggestions: I subscribed to and read the Economist for about 10 years. It is sensible and reliable, and conservative. I read The Wall Street Journal for about 30 years, when it was owned by the Dow Jones people. Now that its ownership is affiliated with Fox News, I do not trust it and rarely read it.
The Washington Times is unabashedly biased, as far as I know, though I have no access to it.
Thanks for the laugh.
hujuParticipantThe best part of Panama is the hat, and you can get one on line, without going to Panama.
January 27, 2022 8:13 am at 8:13 am in reply to: YWN CR Poasters. Do you believe that the Tianamen Square Massacre happened? #2055316hujuParticipantTo ujm: Name 3 news sources you consider reliable. (I need a laugh.)
hujuParticipantTo rightwriter: You cannot call yourself rightspeller until you learn the differences between “busses” and “buses”. The former means two or more kisses, the latter means two or more motor vehicles capable of carrying many passengers.
January 26, 2022 12:51 pm at 12:51 pm in reply to: YWN CR Poasters. Do you believe that the Tianamen Square Massacre happened? #2054930hujuParticipantTo takahmama: A poaster is a household applicance that heats pread to make it into poast.
I believe that the Tianamen Square massacre happened because (i) it was reported by reputable and responsible news services, e.g., New York Times, Washington Post, Reuters, and (ii) I knew a woman who was there and told me about it.
As for the Kent State massacre of 1970, see clause (i) of the previous sentence.
hujuParticipantChabad is excellent for you and all other Jews.
hujuParticipantTo ujm: Where do you get your “information”?
hujuParticipantBest joke of the first 34 is no. 34, Participant in the collision on the bridge.
hujuParticipantThe first few opening posts (and maybe many more I did not read) illustrate either an inadequate secular education or students who should of worked more at it. The spelling is aaaaaahhhhhtrocious. And yes, there is a mistake in my first sentence which illustrates a mistake I see secular teachers make.
hujuParticipantTo coffee addict: Let me clarify or correct what I posted. I would not vote for or otherwise support a Hilary candidacy in the Democratic primaries and nominating process, but if, C”V, she becomes the Democratic candidate and Trump is the Republican candidate, I would vote for Hilary. If Hilary were the Democratic nominee and the Republican nominee were Liz Cheney or Mitt Romney or even Chris Christie or Curtis Sliwa, I would vote for the Republican nominee.
hujuParticipantTop 3 jokes so far: joshua01, Kuvult, and Participant. huju’s was stupid.
hujuParticipantHow many Jewish doctors does it take to write a prescription? 4. One to write the prescription, 3 to write the commentary
January 6, 2022 7:19 pm at 7:19 pm in reply to: Classics and Beyond Bo – Cups, Captivity, and Calculations: #2048901hujuParticipantThis discussion reminds me of that guitar player who had an amplifier that he could turn up to eleven.
hujuParticipantAll these comments have convinced me to go with, “Have a nice day.”
December 30, 2021 4:55 pm at 4:55 pm in reply to: The world should take action on Israel’s treatment of charedim #2046716hujuParticipantTo ujm: I thought every Jew is part of Klal Yisrael.
hujuParticipantTo ujm: Sanctions are imposed by government executives, e.g., the US president. The best of them listen to experts. The rest them play politics or listen to their gut instincts.
hujuParticipantRepublicans love divorce. The only two US presidents who were divorced are Reagan and Trump. Children of divorced couples are more likely to commit crimes.
hujuParticipantDiplomats, high-ranking armed forces personnel, and foreign policy experts have been evaluating the effectiveness of sanctions and military action for at least a hundred years. They will reach better conclusions than the rest of us, especially, me.
hujuParticipantTo ujm: I agree with your comment that women should not be cops. No male cop ever killed anyone unnecessarily.
hujuParticipantPeta is my third-favorite bread.
hujuParticipant“You voted for Trump.”
hujuParticipantTo OrangeCountyChap: If he had a legitimate conversion, why does he also need to be a mensch? Plenty of jerks get a shidduch. Just ask my wife.
December 12, 2021 10:42 am at 10:42 am in reply to: Does a convert adopted by frum parents have a bashert? #2040694hujuParticipantTo “rational”: If you truly believe that Hashem runs the world, you chose the wrong screen name.
hujuParticipantIf you are from Poland, go back now and infect the gentiles.
hujuParticipantI have been on more than half a dozen trips to Europe and Israel in the last 15 years. I have never encountered any anti-Semitism nor have I seen frum-appearing people treated any differently than the rest of the passenger. In particular, when there has been davening in the aisles, the cabin personnel were courteous and never interfered with the daveners, and the daveners were careful not to interfere with the other passengers.
hujuParticipantPearl Harbor was not “invaded.” It was attacked and the US naval fleet there was substantially destroyed. Six months later, the US won the first of many naval battles to reestablish US naval and political power in the Pacific region.
hujuParticipantTo akuperma: There is clearly something wrong with what you listen to. I know a lot about Tel Aviv (visited 3 or more times), and I don’t know anything I could not talk about on YWN. E.g., there is a shop that sells Golda Meir’s personal blend of coffee. It is delicious. Wish they would export it to the US. E.g. 2: It is where Israel declared its independence in 1947. Visit the room where it happened, then watch a recording of the event.
hujuParticipantSince ujm has given me permission to discuss constitutional law, I will raise this question:
Halacha requires abortion to save the mother’s life. So if the Mississippi law is upheld, and a pregnant Jewish woman develops a fatal medical problem after 15 weeks of pregnancy, and abortion would save her life, the Mississippi law would prohibit the woman’s free exercise of her religion. This poses two issues:
1. Would the right to free exercise of religion prevail over the Mississippi statute?
2. And if so, and a non-Jewish woman were in the same situation as the Jewish woman in my example, would she be denied equal protection of the law, because the Jewish woman’s life can be saved, but the non-Jewish woman’s life cannot?
This problem strikes me as a major problem to the Mississippi statute, or any similar statute.
hujuParticipantThe first 22 posts constitute the most uninformed, incoherent discussion I have ever read on YWN. Nobody got the Halacha right, nobody got the US Constitution right. Even the grammar and punctuation were awful.
hujuParticipantTo akuperma: It is not up to you or me or anyone else to define who is Jewish. Hashem decides that, and He always gets it right.
Edited (are you trolling the mods today?)
November 28, 2021 11:07 am at 11:07 am in reply to: Poasters of YWN Coffee Room- Are you employed? #2035061hujuParticipantI employ my poaster every morning to make toast, so I call it a toaster. My neighbor reads a mediocre New York tabloid newspaper, so I call her a poster.
November 28, 2021 11:06 am at 11:06 am in reply to: Caterer charging an extra “chanukkah fee” of $400 for our simcha. #2035060hujuParticipantSpecial Chanukkah fee? I know a kosher caterer who charges a Xmas fee in December.
