I recently read in a reliable source that the US is – is – is – the world’s leading producer of oil and gasoline in the world. But the US position is not so strong that it can have much impact on the prices of oil and gasoline. Mining on US lands would not increase the supply enough to have an impact for the foreseeable future on gasoline prices at the pump.

To AAQ: Thank you for trying to understand my point. My point is, under current fracking costs, fracking does not have a market impact if the price of gasoline less than $5.00 per gallon. And we are all wishing for gasoline at much less than that, so fracking is not an answer.

And government is not hostile to fracking, but, so far, government has recognized that there are many considerations besides the cost of gasoline to consider when deciding whether to all fracking on government lands, and private lands with nearby neighbors who don’t get royalties.

in reply to: GAS PRICES #2108256

For you folks who think fracking can help lower gas prices: Fracking is a very expensive way to get oil, or methane, out of the ground. It does not pay at current prices, and it surely won’t pay when gasoline costs less than $4.00 per gallon.

And one of the problems with fracking is the damage it does to properties adjoining the fracking site. The owners of those properties may not receive royalties from the fracked oil or gas, but their properties are damaged, and they have to sue the frackers to get themselves compensated for the damage to the property. And that further raises the cost of fracked oil and gas.

The wholesale price of gasoline has fallen about $0.80 per gallon since it hit its peak about 3 weeks ago. The retail price has not fallen yet, but I would expect it to fall in the next few weeks. I also expect news coverage of the price decline to be much lower than the rise. So lets stop carrying on like Chicken Little and watch what happens with gasoline prices.

To ujm re updated geopolitics of oil. You are correct that my information about major oil producers and international markets for oil are 10 years old. But I did some checking today, and I believe that the US still cannot materially influence the world price of oil. We may have large reserves, but the cost of getting the reserves out of the ground is high relative to the price of getting Saudi reserves out of the ground, and so there is no short-term solution for easing oil or gasoline prices.

To common saychel: No, I am not nuts. Last time I filled my gas tank and went to the grocery store was this morning. I don’t like the high prices any more than anybody else.

When was the last time you studied economics? The economy is measured by far more than food and gasoline prices, and the US economy is currently strong by most measures. Inflation is cutting down the value of some of the economic growth, and high gas and food prices are in part a serious consequence of Putin’s war on Ukraine.

One other thing: common sense is a fall-back when we do not have sufficient education or expertise to discuss a matter knowledgably.

To ujm: The public official who brought down inflation in the Carter-Reagan years was Carter appointee Paul Volcker, head of the Federal Reserve Board. Learn some facts.

As for oil prices, they are set by world markets. If American companies find more oil, they will sell it at world market prices. And, no, if American companies find more oil or gas, it is unlikely to increase world supplies so much that prices go lower. Only Saudi Arabia can pump or withhold enough oil to impact world prices.

One other popular proposal – eliminate gas taxes – is a temporary fix at best, as we need tax revenue to maintain the roads.

Reb Eliezer’s list of issues is in line with mine, which of course means it’s pretty good. Here’s why I will vote for Biden supporters in the Midterms:

Economy – is strong despite difficult circumstances of high fuel and food costs.

Inflation – is largely the province of the Fed, and Biden will not stand in their way; and it’s a world-wide problem.

Gun control – is opposed by Republicans, and the Second Amendment is substantially misunderstood by opponents of gun control.

Covid – the Centers for Disease Control know better than the rest of us what should be done; yes, I am tired of wearing a mask, but it’s better than getting a serious disease; Republicans, e.g., Gov. DeSantis of Florida, are mostly foolish about Covid.

Ukraine – Russia and its dictator, Putin, are a serious threat to democracy throughout the world. Non-Trumper conservatives want Biden to fight harder for Ukraine, and they are right.

Many commenters have made an important point: Memorial Day has lost its meaning as a day to remember the soldiers who died, and focused more on potato salad.

And I think akuperma made a mistake when he said Memorial Day began as a memorial to dead Union soldiers. I believe it honored all Civil War soldiers, Union and Confederate.

And some commenters believe that frum Jews do only 3 things: Eat, sleep and learn. No one limits him/herself to that. Otherwise, among other things, the frum community would not be growing.

in reply to: Slavery Reparations #2092293

The level of stupidity and immorality on this thread is remarkable. Let me try to explain why.

Slavery is an abomination, whether it is ancient Egypt, ancient Rome, or 18th Century England and its American colonies. Reparations are not payable to the owners because their “ownership” of other human beings is immoral, whether or not recognized by government. Any discussion or reasoning that does not recognize this fundamental principle about slavery is, at best, meaningless, and, at worst, well, … words fail me.

I think YWN would be well-advised to take down this thread, as the comments show no regard for Torah or any other moral system, nor any knowledge of history by the commenters.

I read the first 7 comments. None of them contains any specific, factual examples of what they are talking about. Abstract principles without connections to actual experience are nonsense.

“actual experience” – Why did I use those 2 words? Doesn’t experience have to be actual? How can experience not be actual? Maybe I used “actual” to make it clear what constitutes experience.

    1. I think nOmesorah correctly named the journal I referred to.

    2. ujm’s comment confirms that his yeshivah did not do an adequate job teaching science. Of course, if he went to public school, they don’t always do a good job either.

    3. If Torah is eternal and was and continues to be true (which I believe), why do Torah scholars have so much to say about it? Maybe it’s too complicated for me. I am not as smart as I pretend to be.

in reply to: Global warming #2091710

The opening poster partially answered his question in his last sentence, i.e., some frum Jews support any nonsense that liberals oppose. Another part of the answer, I believe, is the mediocrity of science education in yeshivas. And a different part of the answer is the failure to educate ourselves about how to reconcile the teachings of Torah with the teachings of science.

There is a journal dedicated to the interface of Torah and science, edited, I believe, by a Chabadnik named Yermiyahu Branover, who is a scientist educated in Soviet Russia, who became frum when he left the Soviet Union in the early 70’s. If you want to genuinely learn about Torah and science, find that journal.
