January 31, 2020 10:47 am at 10:47 am in reply to: What happens if the Corona Virus spreads to the U.S. #1827689hujuParticipant
I thought the Corona virus started in central Queens.
hujuParticipantI have said this before and I will say it again: Why would anyone want advice from non-medical yentas on this or any other website?
And to southerner: Why would you refer to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia by its local nickname: “chop”? No one outside Philadelphia would understand the reference, and it’s a gruesome name for a hospital. Maybe it would be a good name for a veterinary hospital.
hujuParticipantctlawyer: If Trump is convicted of crimes and sentenced to jail in any jurisdiction of the US, I am sure that Putin will help resettle Trump in Russia.
hujuParticipantI never thought I would say this, but … milhouse is right, and I am wrong. There were numberings and chapters before the guys milhouse mentioned.
hujuParticipantThe chapter and verse numbering in the Pentateuch was established by the Greeks before the time of Hillel. What particularly puzzles me is that we Jews have our own chapterization of the Pentateuch – the parshas. And if we wanted further numbering, why did we not create our own?
hujuParticipantWhether it’s snoods or sheitels, the mitzvahs of ahavas yisrael and chesed require us not to be snooty or obnoxious to fellow Jewish women, regardless of what’s on their heads. So the snood or sheitel debate is secondary.

hujuParticipantThe obstacles to gun ownership are weak enough at the present time – and I am talking about New York. If Jews want to arm themselves, current – or even tighter – gun controls are not the problem. I don’t know whether it’s going to be a net benefit to synagogues to have more members packing, and frum shuls will need very secure lockers to hold pistols from Friday night to Saturday morning, unless there are rabbis who opine that carrying weapons on Shabbos is ok.
And, most important of all, will it help to have bullets flying in a synagogue? It’s hard to say.
hujuParticipantI don’t know whether a war with Iran is a good idea, but plenty of generals and diplomats have warned against it, both before and after the killing of Gen. Sulimani. Of course, we know the president is impulsive, does not read his daily intelligence briefings, and can’t find Iran on a map. So what could go wrong?
hujuParticipantI think the mo daf yomi the bettuh.
hujuParticipantA better title for this thread would be “With Trump through dumb and dumber”.
hujuParticipantblue shirt got it right. I would like to add that the opening poster’s story illustrates the thin line between yiddishkeit piety and obsessive-compulsive disorder. If we forget why Hashem wants us to do something, or that why we do something is because Hashem commanded it, we are just a bunch of screwballs.
hujuParticipantTo SyagLechochma: I infer from your comment that you received a kidney from a non-family donor. I am glad you did. How old was the donor when he/she made the donation, and how many children did he/she have at the time of the donation?
December 22, 2019 1:02 pm at 1:02 pm in reply to: What is the OTD situation in E.Y., how does it compare to the US? #1812851hujuParticipantFewer Israeli bochurim go OTD around Chanukah. The jelly donuts are better in Israel.
hujuParticipantI like a kosher Big Mac better than potato chips, but kosher Big Macs are hard to find in the New York area. There are lots in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv.
hujuParticipantJoseph: What does life insurance have to do with tznius? The halachos of life insurance is complicated, but I don’t think tznius is in the mix.
hujuParticipantThe OP sounds young. Life with only one kidney is dangerous, as you may lose the one kidney in an accident or illness. Save your kidneys for yourself and your family. And your kidneys are likely to match the blood and tissue types of a family member in need.
I know a father who gave a kidney to his son. If dad had given it to strangers or an “organ bank” at a young age, his son might have had to wait for a suitable donor, or never have received the needed kidney.
Donating organs is not like donating blood. Blood grows back, organs don’t.
December 16, 2019 12:56 pm at 12:56 pm in reply to: Why are the liberals going to bus dangerous youths from OOT into Flatbush? #1811115hujuParticipantOh, one other thing: I believe “OOT” means “out of town,” which I interpret to mean outside the New York City metro area. I believe the charter school will draw its students from the 5 boroughs. Evidently, the headline author thinks OOT refers to areas outside Flatbush and Midwood. That would make Borough Park OOT. Seems to be an awfully narrow definition of OOT.
December 15, 2019 4:37 pm at 4:37 pm in reply to: Why are the liberals going to bus dangerous youths from OOT into Flatbush? #1810921hujuParticipantI know lots of members of “Conservative” synagogues. They are hardly a bunch of lefties. I don’t know why they chose to rent their unused space to a charter school dedicated to “at risk youth,” but I bet they are no different than most landlords, and so I suspect it was money and credit risk, neither of which are strong suits for yeshivas.
hujuParticipantI have always considered any walkout of daveners right before or during the rabbi’s speech/sermon/devar Torah to be an insult to the rabbi. And so (regrettably in my opinion), as long as there are rabbis, there will be kiddush clubs.
November 26, 2019 7:33 pm at 7:33 pm in reply to: Why are the liberals going to bus dangerous youths from OOT into Flatbush? #1804846hujuParticipantTo RebbeDebbie: Just my uninformed guess, but I would bet the school for at-risk utes outbid all the yeshivas.
November 26, 2019 1:18 pm at 1:18 pm in reply to: Is it illegal to walk around wearing a counterfeit “I Voted” sticker? #1804693hujuParticipantI wear a conterfeit “I’m vaccinated” sticker so people will daven with me.
hujuParticipantTo eek: Many schools can hook you up with a good speech therapist. Give them a call.
Most of the gifts I give to children originated in China, but Indonesia and Thailand are coming on strong.
November 25, 2019 7:03 pm at 7:03 pm in reply to: Is it better to be Chassidish or Litvish? #1804419hujuParticipantAre there only 2 choices. What about the Rotary Club?
November 20, 2019 2:55 pm at 2:55 pm in reply to: Is playing a musical instrument a negative??? #1802661hujuParticipantAre gentile musicians permitted at Jewish simchas? If not, some Jews have to know how to make music.
hujuParticipantIt is a mitzvah to love all Jews. It is easier to love all pizza.
hujuParticipantBochurs should not have beards if they need glue.
hujuParticipantTo Joseph: Non-halachic Jews are Jews, not gentiles. Where in Torah does it support your statement? Perhaps you should realize that non-halachic Jews are an opportunity.
hujuParticipantThe Jews I know in Denver are really good skiers and pretty good long-distance runners when closer to sea level.
October 19, 2019 8:51 pm at 8:51 pm in reply to: Black suits for brothers of chasson and kallah? #1793702hujuParticipantRe Joseph’s approval of Gadolhadorah’s comment: I guess the heavy winds of the last few days are from Godolhadorah’s breathing a huge sigh of relief that Joseph approves.
hujuParticipantThank you, lesschum.
hujuParticipantAnd the award for best comment goes to … drum roll … Goldilocks.
hujuParticipantTo Gadolhat: You comment that Kudlow is a talented professional, but you don’t say what profession. He does not have masters or doctorate in economics, and, if I am not mistaken, his undergraduate major was not econimics. I don’t think any credentialed economist takes him seriously. I guess his profession is smoothe talker about economics. He has consistently made the “best dressed” lists in Washington. He has long supported the idea that tax cuts pay for themselves, notwithstanding all the evidence to the contrary. Professionals do not ignore evidence, and, for what it’s worth, most professionals are average dressers.
Sekulow is a lawyer, and lawyers are supposed to advocate their clients’ positions, regardless of merit. He may be good at that, but that does not make him a good advisor.
hujuParticipantIt is interesting that someone is looking for an English-language edition of a Jewish newspaper. I think it shows the ascendancy of English as an everyday language of Jews. The attachment of some Jews to Yiddish is, I think, nostalgic and unsound. Yiddish is not a holy language. It was appropriate when Jews lived in central and eastern Europe, and there are many important writings in Yiddish, but those writings are not the Torah or Talmud. I think English is spoken by more Jews than any other language, and we should recognize that fact.
hujuParticipantTo lakewhut: Yes, Trump has a Wharton degree, but he clearly does not have a Wharton education. No one at Wharton thinks “trade wars are easy to win,” or that “tax cuts pay for themselves”. There are lots of things money can buy, including Ivy League degrees, but only genuine, honest work can get you an education, Ivy League or otherwise. My undergraduate education is from the University of Wisconsin – not Ivy, but not too shabby.
As for fake news, the fakest news these days is anything that Trump says about nearly anything. Unfortunately, you and I cannot have a sensible discussion since we do not agree on the facts.
hujuParticipantThe high number of comments on this topic tells me that the posters who oppose the temporary suspension of the statute of limitations on six crimes against children have little faith in the yeshivas to screen out the problem- atic teachers/rabbis. I have no idea of the scope of the problem of child abuse in yeshivas, but I think it is good that the secular authorities have increased the recourse of victims to seek civil relief.
I also have no idea how many unscrupulous Jews would bring fake lawsuits – i.e., real lawsuits with fake facts – to pick up some extra bucks at the expense of the yeshivas and the teachers/rabbis who work in them. Clearly, though, many of the posters think that number is high.
hujuParticipantSo the problem with Trump is, not enough frum Jews? Too many otd Jews? I think the trouble with Trump is that he’s lazy, uneducated, arrogant, insecure, and a lying liar. All the rest is commentary.
hujuParticipantTrump bumper stickers in Hebrew are an excellent idea. That way, gentiles and most American Jews won’t know that the frum drivers of the cars are Trump supporters.
August 23, 2019 2:10 pm at 2:10 pm in reply to: Over saturated professions in the Frum community. #1778653hujuParticipantLeast saturated occupation in frum community is rich father-in-law.
hujuParticipantI have noticed – on YWN and elsewhere – that many Associated Press stories lean anti-Trump, and others, sometimes covering the same event, lean pro-Trump. AP sells its content to a broad range of markets, and I guess it is helpful to AP to have products that appeal to all its customers, some who lean left, others who lean right.
As for YWN, I have no doubt the editor(s) lean pro-Trump, but not brazenly so. I have not doubt, also, that Trump is not good for the Jews. When the white nationalists he encourages run out of immigrants and brown folks to bash, they will turn to their favorite and long-standing target, the Jews. An American embassy in Jerusalem won’t help Jews in Boro Park.
May 25, 2019 11:00 pm at 11:00 pm in reply to: Are gun rights protected by the First Amendment? #1732869hujuParticipantIf you have to ask ….
hujuParticipantThey should learn to putt before they learn to drive.
hujuParticipantOK, time for an old joke (prompted by CTlawyer’s mention of Yekkes): What do you get when a Yekke marries a Chabadnik: Children who are exactly an hour late.
hujuParticipantWould the OP prefer a fly? Would the OP be OK with the soup if it were her husband’s finger?
hujuParticipantDonald Trump is not the first, and won’t be the last, adulterous president. But he might be the first to brag about it.
March 31, 2019 1:12 pm at 1:12 pm in reply to: Ice cream called “big gay” certified kosher-what’s your take? #1705482hujuParticipantI don’t know all the in’s and out’s of kosher certification, but Big Gay Ice Cream surely will not sell well in frum neighborhoods, where heckshers matter. And in neighborhoods where Big Gay Ice Cream does sell well, nobody will be looking for or even notice a hecksher.
hujuParticipantHe should have stayed with his band. I especially liked “Livin’ in the USA,” which expresses ideas contrary to his immigration policy.
December 16, 2018 4:54 pm at 4:54 pm in reply to: What ate the best chedarim in Yerushalayim for teaching math? #1645629hujuParticipantThe thing that ate the chedarim that were best at teaching math was a giant godzilla-like fire-breathing dragon. It didn’t actually happen – it is based on a movie with a cult following, called “The Thing That Ate Chedarim in Jerusalem.” The movie is on a lot of lists of the worst movies of 1954. One of the supporting actors was Bernard Schwartz, who later changed his name to Tony Curtis. How bad was the movie? Jerry Lewis turned down a chance to play the lead because he thought it was stupid.
October 3, 2018 9:59 pm at 9:59 pm in reply to: Why are there no Gibson guitars in Jewish Music bands #1598269hujuParticipantTo Daas Yochid: funniest comment ever on YWN, including all of mine.
