The time for “Put Up or Shut Up” is past. Now, Trump supporters, just Shut Up.

There are plenty of anti-Trump Republicans and conservatives, e.g., William Kristol, Bret Stephens, the Republicans who run The Lincoln Project. It is not enough for a politician’s views to align with yours. He/She must also be competent, educated, experienced in governing, moral, honest, and even-tempered. Trump fails all those tests. Plenty of Democratic and liberal politicians also fail those tests.

Religious right-wingers – Jewish, evangelical Christians, others – chose to overlook Trump’s incompetence, et al. I would like to hear from some YWN readers why they did so.

Yeah, Jews should not be comfortable in America. We should go some place safe, like Germany, or anywhere else in Europe, Africa, or Asia. Have there been any anti-Semitic incidents in Antarctica? Just bring that heavy wool talis.

So far, 36 of 38 courts where Trump’s lawyers – should that word be in scare quotes? – have sought relief have found insufficient evidence and have thrown the cases out of court. (I don’t know what is happening with the 2 cases still pending, but they will not have materially adverse outcomes for Biden and Harris.) Those of you looking at the evidence that Trump’s lawyers present in press conferences are looking at the wrong forums. You can kid yourself as long as you like, but on January 20, 2021, Joe Biden and Kamala Harris will become the president and vice president of the United States.

I am pleased to report that I bought a jar of half-sour pickles on Friday, I just tasted the first one out of the jar, and they are in fact half-sour. I attribute this to an improved shipping schedule as a result of the election of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris.

Some of the commenters have overlooked the fact that the question is purely hypothetical. My reaction if Trump legitimately won: First I would break out in hives, then I would move to Canada, if they would have me. America would become a failed democracy.

According to a lawyer I know who practices in New York, Trump has a reputation for not paying his legal bills. Any lawyer taking Trump’s election cases should insist on being paid in full up front. Not that that would improve the outcomes of Trump’s election cases.

I think the pollsters underestimated Trump’s support because they underestimated the reluctance of many Trump supporters to admit that they would vote for Trump. The Trump supporters in the Coffee Room may be shameless, but lots of Trump supporters worry about drawing criticism from Trump opponents.

Trump supporters have been chanting, “Lock her/him up” for 4 years. Trump supporters should now realize that (i) there were no valid criminal charges that could be pressed against the targets of their chance, and/or (ii) Trump is so incompetent that he failed to lock anybody up except for (A) Hispanic children whose parents wanted to come to America and (B) his former lawyer.

in reply to: how the frum olam voted #1917803
    huju
    Participant

The frum voters are such a teeny weeny portion of the electorate, and in only one state – New York, which in presidential elections, is reliably Democratic – that no candidate cares about their votes. I think Trump pretended to care, and made some nominally pro-Israel policy decisions, only to get the financial backing of Sheldon Adelson. Not that there is anything wrong with that.

But keep in mind that Trump also got support from anti-Semites like the “Proud Boys” and right-wing anti-Semitic militias. On balance, Trump’s loss is good for the Jews.

No one has mentioned this, so I will: Scientific evidence suggests that toieva occurs in twice as many men as women. That means that there will always be more women than men looking for marriage. What has amplified the crisis is the rise of social media in the last 10 years, enabling more discussion of the impact of the excess supply of women and the resulting number of unmarried women. If the science is correct (and I am not certain that it is), then no amount of effort would to make a serious impact on the number of unmarried women.

in reply to: character vs policy Which is more important? #1916818
    huju
    Participant

You cannot evaluate a candidate separately on policy vs. character. If a candidate has bad character, his/her policy proposals are malleable and can be changed by undue influence like money under the table or blackmail. And unexpected developments will require a candidate, when elected, to make new policy decisions. With bad character, the interests of the public is more likely to be overlooked when new issues, new information, or new technology emerge.

To CTLawyer: My one experience with homemade pickles ended badly. A good friend brought her homemade pickles to my parents’ house. The jar could not be opened, so my father punctured the lid with an awl, and the juice sprayed everywhere – ceiling, windows, father, floor. The pickles were good, but not worth the mess.

And, fyi, I like jarred gefilte fish, though the homemade I have had is better. Who makes the pickles and gefilte fish in your home – if it’s your wife, you should have given her credit.

In Israel, among my Mizrahi mishpacha, they joke about Ashkenaz gefilte fish – too much sugar. That’s ironic, because my Ashkenazi mispacha who visit Israel claim the Israelis, especially the Mizrahim, use sugar in their gefilte fish, which tastes weird to their Ashkenazi palates.

Well, it is now time for hindsight about October surprises, and YWN commentators’ expectations of October surprises. Seems like we all (including me, notwithstanding my extraordinary astutivity) missed the surprisingest surprise of all: Trump gets hospitalized with Covid-19.

As for the outcome of Tuesday’s election, we will have to wait until at least Friday, November 6, for a reasonably reliable vote count. The polls say Biden has a better chance of winning than Hillary did in 2016. For me, that is ice cold comfort.

Wasn’t Barack Obama going to destroy the Jews when he was elected in 2008? If I went back to the comments and Coffee Room discussions prior to his election, I would not be surprised if an Obama victory was viewed in the same dire terms as Biden victory is being discussed now. So how do we take the doomsday expectations of the pro-Trump commenters now? With a grain of salt? Or a hearty laugh?

in reply to: Supreme Court Packing #1911032

There are several tricks – appointment of biased judges and court packing – to affect Supreme Court decisions. There is one democratic method method – amend the constitution as authorized by its terms. Right wing unhappiness with the Supreme Court goes back to the school desegregation decision of 1954, and continued with the decisions upholding rights of criminals, prohibiting the death penalty, recognizing a right to birth control, and rights against gender discrimination.

If Roe v. Wade is overturned, I would hope that supporters of abortion rights seek to amend the constitution. It takes a long time, takes super-majorities, and lots of money to drive the campaign for the amendment, but I think it could be done. Messing with the court itself, using political tricks, hurts the court and hurts democracy.

As long as the coronavirus is out of control in the US, the virus will adversely affect the economy.
