Blinky, is there a point to your sarcasm?
HomeownerMemberBlinky, actually eating excessive amounts of fatty foods is bad for you. I eat pizza occasionally and my total cholesterol is generally in the 120s.
Jam, you are correct. I had a rebbe in yeshiva who told us that he believed were the Sanhedrin around today they would asser smoking.
I have an additional question, unrelated to health. How can you put something in your mouth if you don’t know if it’s kosher? For that matter, how about on Pesach?
HomeownerMemberThere must be something wrong with my browser. I thought I was reading “The Yeshiva World.” Instead I seem to have stumbled upon “The Neturei Karta World.”
HomeownerMemberAt Kloten Airport, there is a Swiss Rail (SBB) station under the terminal buildings. You can take the train directly to the Zurich Hauptbahnhof, the main station, sort of like Grand Central. Go second class as it’s a very brief ride.
From there,I would walk down the main street, the Bahnhofstrasse, to the Paradeplatz, and then to the lake.
Here is a listing of different tours (in English) from the city website:
http://www.zuerich.com/en/page.cfm/excursions/individuals/zuerich_city/zuerich_city_x
If you are looking to buy any grocery products, there is a Co-Op supermarket near the train station and along the Bahnhofstrasse several department stores like Jelmoli and Globus have food departments.
Please note that in my experience you will very often see Swiss products that are exported to the United States with a hechscher (e.g. certain chocolates) sold without a hechscher. (In Europe, many products have no MARKED hechsher but are known in the Jewish community as being kosher.) Discuss with your rav whether or not you should buy them.
HomeownerMemberJohnnie Walker, any label will be fine.
HomeownerMemberSMS007, how is your baby doing?
HomeownerMembercoke,
Why are you unable to READ THE LABEL on the bottle?
Or if the type is too small, since you’re already using the internet, why not take a look at the product website? Isn’t that smarter than crying for help on a discussion page?

HomeownerMemberBPTotty, and in the 60s, we were dismissed early from yeshiva every October 31, lest we get beaten up on the way home.
HomeownerMemberhomell,
Despite the gibberish you posted, it seems like you are suggesting that one can get a heter to commit tax evasion.
Are you nuts?
Please delete this chilul Hashem from CR.

HomeownerMemberapushatayid, only if he were born in Mexico. 🙂 (Sorry, old joke, couldn’t resist.)
HomeownerMembersms007, I am sorry, but no one has contacted me. I’d like to help you out but I don’t want to get kicked off this site, so I don’t know what to do.
Suggestions?
HomeownerMemberMdd, please stop with the personal attacks. I don’t make the law, I just explain it. You live in a country whose legal system is based on the Constitution of the United States. Supporting a law that will unquestionably be ruled unconstitutional is a foolish exercise, not that it would be passed anyway.
HomeownerMemberTheChevra, guess again. Ever hear of freedom of expression?
HomeownerMembermissme sad, “Even the goyim realize the terrible outlook of this! Let this be an example for us and how we can handle this situation.”
Actually, that’s goy, singular not plural. He still has to convince the city council.
As for your suggestion, if by “we” you mean anyone reading this website in the United States, you have this small problem standing in your way. It’s called the Constitution.
HomeownerMembersms007,
I have a spare. Yours for free. Set it up with Yeshiva World.

HomeownerMemberBP Totty, there are a variety of skin conditions that can be improved by shaving chest hair. A dermatologist can confirm this.
Also, swimmers shave their chests to improve speed. (What am I thinking? You’re probably going to asser swimming.) 🙂

What is the secret formula for inserting HTML codes that you are using?
Obviously, the real codes like word for bold, etc. don’t work here.

If you daven three times a day and accept the Taryag Mitzvos BUT you (apparently) don’t believe in “dinei d’malchusa k’dina” since you get convicted of tax evasion and money laundering, are YOU still a Jew?
Obviously I agree with ronsr.

October 21, 2010 5:21 pm at 5:21 pm in reply to: Spooky: FDA says no right to choose what you eat? #702520HomeownerMemberVnishmartemmeod, thanks. Fortunately, I rarely eat challah other than for kiddush. Also, I generally order water challah, not egg challah.
HomeownerMemberLots of incorrect information on the law here but no need to correct it.
It all boils down to this: the present administration seems to believe that there is no discrimination that needs to be prosecuted other than discrimination against African Americans.
White people intimidated by Black Panthers at the polls? Attorney General Eric Holder did nothing.
Massive amounts of age discrimination in employment? Nothing?
A Sabbath Observer (note this includes other religions besides ours) can’t get a job in a company that is open 24/7? Nothing.
The question was raised why Congress has never acted to clarify the law after TWA v. Hardison. If you are a shomer shabbos Jew who works for a living, ask the following:
What did Senators Chuck Schumer or Kirstin Gillibrand do to help you with employment discrimination?
How about Congressman Jerry Nadler?
The answer is a big ZERO.
Why do frum Jews keep voting for these Democrats who won’t even INTRODUCE a bill to help us?
HomeownerMemberIn the event the MTA puts the tefillin up for sale, could we take up a collection here (of course, under the Yeshiva World supervision) to buy the tefillin?
Then, after a suitable period (whatever the psak halacha is), if they are still unclaimed, perhaps they can go to a poor Jew who needs a new pair of tefillin or to a yeshiva as a “spare pair.”
October 21, 2010 4:49 am at 4:49 am in reply to: Spooky: FDA says no right to choose what you eat? #702516HomeownerMemberSacrilege,
No worries. As you can see from my other posts, I am a big proponent of healthier eating in our community.
In that regard, I buy nothing from the bakeries other than challah. Most people with this attitude do so because they have questions regarding kashruth. In my case, it’s because the bakeries rarely provide two things I want: 1) lists of ingredients; and 2) nutritional information.
Stay well.
HomeownerMemberCHAIMBERLIN702, fortunately, when I have wanted to daven while visiting Arizona (and therefore not having a jacket left in shul), I have been allowed to participate in the minyan.
You can daven without a jacket, really.
HomeownerMemberIf you want to insist on wearing a “bekishe” on Shabbos, go for it. But please consider the feelings of others.
By the way, would it be safe to assume you are not engaged in kiruv work? 🙂
October 20, 2010 3:39 pm at 3:39 pm in reply to: Spooky: FDA says no right to choose what you eat? #702514HomeownerMemberSacrilege, there is no reason to be snide. I certainly haven’t said anything rude to you.

October 19, 2010 9:16 pm at 9:16 pm in reply to: Spooky: FDA says no right to choose what you eat? #702498HomeownerMemberSacrilege,
I’m responding to you immediately before I read any other posts.
You asked if I eat margarine. Chas v’shalom! On the rare times when I want to spread something on toast, I use Benecol, Smart Balance or a similar item. Not only does Benecol not contain trans fats, it’s even good for you and it has an OU pareve designation.
October 19, 2010 5:17 pm at 5:17 pm in reply to: Spooky: FDA says no right to choose what you eat? #702481HomeownerMemberSince the subject of cigarette smoking was raised, I have a few questions:
1. Since cigarette smoking is definitely bad for you, who decided that it is mutar to smoke?
2. Who gives the hashgacha on Marlboros?
3. For that matter, how are you allowed to smoke on Pesach when you have no idea what is in the cigarette?
HomeownerMemberEsther,
If you want motivation, in addition to the other suggestions given, try this. Find a good internist who is not in Borough Park or any other frum community. (In other words, he or she won’t listen to someone saying fressing is a mitzvah.)
Go for a physical. Get your blood tested. See the doctor for the results. Ask him or her about your elevated cholesterol, glucose and hemoglobin A1C. Ask about your risks for diabetes (which you may find out you already have), heart disease, stroke, etc.
THEN see if you are motivated.
By the way, ask the doctor how much weight you are advised to lose. It could be less than you think.
I too was 50 pounds too heavy. But no more. Now my body mass index (BMI) is close to 23 which is well within the normal weight range.
There are many different approaches to weight loss but all come down to one simple truth: you have to burn more calories than you consume.
Good luck!
October 19, 2010 3:33 am at 3:33 am in reply to: An important lesson from last weeks parsha for married people #702532HomeownerMemberWhy be selective? Why choose only one thing for which to emulate Avrohom?
HomeownerMemberMosherose said,
“You think that R. Moshe’s rebetzin would have made “Scarboro [sic] Fair Chicken?” based on the goyishe song?”
I am puzzled that you criticize the song “Scarborough Fair” which became popular in 1966 when it was sung by two Jews, Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel, while at the same time you yourself use the title “Defender of the Faith.” If there is any title that is “goyish” it’s that one. Google it and see.
HomeownerMemberMinyan Gal, Hatzlacha on your efforts. Tragically, many people in our community eat with no regard to their health. It is not a mitzvah to eat high cholesterol, high fat meals! Let’s not let heart disease and stroke do to our people what the Nazis could not.
HomeownerMemberI, too don’t care for cholent. Vegetarian chili, however, is great.
HomeownerMemberzaidy78,
Read some more. Lots of things were sent down to the minors. How do you think the television camera got there?
HomeownerMemberSacrilege,
Some of the disputes here remind me (I guess it’s obligatory to insert the word “l’havdil”) of the story of the right wing reverend who objected to John Lennon’s music being played on a radio station.
When the station owner asked him to explain his objection, he said “John Lennon’s song says ‘there’s no Heaven.'”
“Wrong” said the station owner. “The lyric is ‘IMAGINE there’s no Heaven.'”
It’s these little details that are so important. 🙂
HomeownerMemberJust regarding the Yankees, I was at game three of the series with Boston on Chol HaMoed Sukkos (which the Yanks took 4-3 in the tenth) and there was a minyan outside the stadium after the game.
HomeownerMemberWellInformedYid,
I don’t know what you found on Google or whether it was accurate or not. (Sometimes searches turn up material that was edited out of the “final cut” of a film.)
I can tell you this that I remember no sex scene from the film. I have a different explanation than yours. I believe that either there was none or it was very insignificant.
Hakatan,
I believe you are well intentioned but I disagree with you.
First of all, a number of the actors were definitely Jewish.
Second, if you truly believe that watching a film of actors playing Jewish soldiers killing Nazis makes (in your words) “yourself a lesser person as a result of watching it” then I can only say you are lucky that my father, my uncles and my grandfather are in Olam Habah and not here to set you straight. As Holocaust survivors, they all would have loved the movie.
HomeownerMemberMyfriend, really? So you recommend no college and then try your hand at business with a high school diploma? Tell me more of this game plan.
Sacrilige, Google is your friend. There is much controversy over who created Facebook including more than one lawsuit.
Marc Zuckerberg did not make billions of dollars while in Harvard. Even if he had, you missed the point. My point was tha he is an exception.
HomeownerMember1987, who is allowing his or her kids to use the computer unsupervised?
This thread is supposed to be about movies. Last year I saw “Inglorious _______” a movie set in World War II about a group of American soldiers on a mission to kill as many Nazis as possible.
Quite honestly, I enjoyed it.
If anyone really believes it’s assur to watch such a movie, tell me why.
HomeownerMemberMichelleNY,
Yes, indeed, there are people with college degrees who are not very competent. And, of course, there are people who never completed college who have done extremely well.
Before you bring up names, Bill Gates did not complete college. Neither did Marc Zuckerberg.
But, let’s be very, very clear: THESE ARE RARE EXCEPTIONS.
I am delighted that you have done well so far without a university degree. I sincerely hope you continue to be successful. But I read in your post at least a hint of a suggestion that a college degree is optional these days to succeed in the job market. Such advise is, respectfully, quite misguided.
Since this is The Yeshiva World, “Ain somchim al ha ness,” i.e. “don’t rely on a miracle.”
