Refraining by Jewish people from reading most secular literature is already well established. A book leads to magazine leads to music leads to a play leads to a film leads to a theatre leads to an opera leads to a ballet leads to a wrestling ring leads to contests. All forbidden.

And all of this leads to mixed dancing. 😉

And what’s wrong with Ayn Rand? She is an amazingly good writer, almost astounding considering English wasn’t her first language. And while she considered herself an atheist, if you’ve read her work, you’ve seen her pintele yid is quite in evidence.

However, in spite of that, her books are not appropriate for 11th grade girls.

If you go to the American Mensa web site, hover over “Learn,” then click on “Mensa for Kids.” On that page you will see something about and “Excellence in Reading Award” program. You don’t have to participate in the program, but if you look at the reading list, you will find many appropriate suggestions.

Why do some people repeat words like “do you know what I mean?” over and over and over again the whole time whenever they talk? Do you know what I mean? Are they trying to gain thinking time? Why do they do it? And what other phrazes have you noticed other people repeating endlessly for no reason (besides how are you)? Do you know what I mean? Kind of? Basically?

I have a friend who used to do that. He doesn’t do it that much anymore. I started answering, “I know exactly what you mean,” each time he said it.

Why do people, at their Shabbos meal, have a large white bread, and a small whole-wheat roll, then keep the roll to themselves and give the guests the white bread? Maybe the guests would like whole-wheat, too?

And that’s why everyone should learn hilchos Shabbos thoroughly. Too many times I have seen people tell their children, “You can’t do that on Shabbos,” when it was something permissible. There are enough things that are prohibited on Shabbos without adding extras.

there are certain diagnoses (thats not a misspell)

“Diagnoses” was spelled correctly, then you missed an apostrophe in “that’s” and used the verb “misspell” instead of the noun “misspelling.”

One out of three isn’t bad. (For the CR, it’s amazingly good.)

AARGH! I’m sure the mods won’t let this through, but I have to do my part.

US abortion rate is 41%, meaning that nearly 2 in 5 pregnancies in the US are terminated

Forty percent is equal to two in five. Therefore, more than 40 percent is more than two in five. Since 41 is more than 40, that would be more than two in five, not nearly two in five. (Yes, I know math, too.)

. . . less boys are being circumcised nowadays.

Less is for things you count. Fewer is for things you don’t count. Just because we don’t count Jews doesn’t mean we are not able to.

It’s not always so easy to cash an American check.

The easiest way to do it is to open a separate account and give her an ATM card. Let her know you will put $X in each month and that is what she has available to spend.

I don’t think anyone was happier to see the beginning of the zman than I was.

When I would be on my way home from work, it was very disheartening to get on a bus at 10:30 p.m. when it was packed with everybody who had to come to Haifa bein hazmanim. And even when the bus wasn’t packed, I was still unable to sit because children were sitting in all the seats. I guess in Yeshiva they don’t teach parents to teach their children to give up a seat to an adult.

Now it’s Elul, and tonight I got to sit down.

I happen to love English. It has such precision in its words. It’s a shame that most people in the CR have no concept of the language. And we can include the OP and title of this thread as examples.

The way most of the posters here abuse the language is like throwing tomato sauce on a beautiful painting.

Why in England do they say “…was taken to hospital” as opposed to the way WE say it “…taken to THE hospital”?

In England, you go to school, you go to prison, you go to hospital.

In the U.S. you go to school, you go to prison, you go to THE hospital.

Or, on the other hand, why do WE say it the way WE do???

    That’s an excellent question.

in reply to: Best & Worst Grade School Memories #977571

I have three worst. The first was in kindergarten. Someone said to me, “Heidi is wearing funny shoes,” and I said, “Yes, she is.” I didn’t really think the shoes were that funny, I was just being agreeable. However, I was the one who was made to stand in the corner for saying Heidi was wearing funny shoes.

The second happened in sixth grade. One of the boys in the class had a birthday and brought gum for everyone. The teacher wasn’t that happy, as she would have preferred that he brought cupcakes, or something similar. However, she agreed to let us chew the gum. At the end of the day, I was going to my locker to get my coat, and another teacher saw me chewing gum and told me to spit it out. I told her Mrs. L. was letting us chew gum that day, but she said, “Mrs. L. never lets people chew gum,” and she made me spit it out.

The third was from eighth grade. I had a rotten teacher that year who was quite incapable of teaching. For math, we had a program that consisted of a series of booklets we were able to work on at our own pace. I finished all the required booklets and three of the four optional booklets. I was nearly finished with the fourth, but during math period he always found something else for me to do and wouldn’t let me finish that fourth booklet.

I have three best memories. The first was in first grade when my teacher discovered I could already read our reader. She realized it was pointless for to keep me in a group that was reading a book I could already read, so instead she let me advance quicker.

The second was in sixth grade when I received the “sixth grade math award.” That was the only grade that had a math award.

The third was in eighth grade. That year they instituted two “eighth grade math awards,” one for a boy and one for a girl. I got one of them. I really think the reason they made two awards is because we had a male teacher and he didn’t want it to look as if a girl was smarter than all the boys.
