haifagirlParticipant
Mods, could you please change the word “adults” in the title of this thread to “parents.”
Not all adults are parents, and it could be painful for someone who is childless to open this thread and discover it is really directed to parents and not all adults.
haifagirlParticipantI don’t know how it is possible to avoid “non-Jewish” music. I was once at a friend’s house and she had on a CD of Jewish music. I recognized almost all the tunes, and they were all “non-Jewish.”
Once, during a piano lesson, I had a student learning an easy version of Brahms’s Lullaby. She recognized it immediately. “Oh,” she said, “it’s Hamapil!”
haifagirlParticipantDispensers.
haifagirlParticipantThe fact is that they won’t let you join the itinerary in NY, when the ticket originated in Houston.
You totally missed the point. Nobody ever mentioned joining a flight in NY if it originated in Houston.
In the case you cited, the person would fly from NY to Houston. Take the flight that originates from Houston in Houston.
THEN, on the way back, instead of flying to Houston back to NY, just get off the plane in NY and skip Houston.
haifagirlParticipantI recite Shakespeare.
haifagirlParticipantIt just depends on what variables you’re looking at.
Which, not what.
haifagirlParticipantI don’t quite get your description. If you miss the first leg of your flight, the airline will usually automatically cancel subsequent legs. So you couldn’t do that.
Check the OP again. It was about missing the LAST leg of the flight, not the first.
haifagirlParticipantWHY ARE YOU YELLING?
May 2, 2013 4:33 pm at 4:33 pm in reply to: Upgraded from a smartphone to a kosher phone? Tell us how your life improved! #950050haifagirlParticipant” It doesn’t ask how your life was affected, it asks how your life was “improved.””
Lol, you’re really nitpicking. Seems to me that if your life was improved, it was affected, wouldn’t you agree?
Obviously, yes.
However, if your life declined, it was affected, wouldn’t you agree?
May 2, 2013 10:13 am at 10:13 am in reply to: Upgraded from a smartphone to a kosher phone? Tell us how your life improved! #950035haifagirlParticipantThis thread started as something very simple: I was asking people who moved from smartphones to kosher phones how it affected them.
No you weren’t. Did you read the title? It doesn’t ask how your life was affected, it asks how your life was “improved.” That’s a value judgement.
haifagirlParticipantI’d rather have the people who advertise via pop-ups pay for this site than have to pay a membership fee.
haifagirlParticipantThere are several people who know who I am. What surprised me was that there are so many people who haven’t figured it out.
May 1, 2013 9:17 pm at 9:17 pm in reply to: Upgraded from a smartphone to a kosher phone? Tell us how your life improved! #950025haifagirlParticipantI have a regular phone–neither kosher nor smart. As soon as I can afford it, I am going to get a smartphone. There is an app available that shows exactly when the bus is going to arrive at my stop and exactly where the bus is at any given moment. That would be very useful for me.
haifagirlParticipantJust my hapence: She could weigh the same as a duck.
ROFL!
haifagirlParticipantAha! Give her my love.
haifagirlParticipantSyag Lchochma, I get the feeling you know me. Do I know you? Can you give me a hint?
haifagirlParticipantI think I remember from whom I heard it, but I’ll have to wait until I get home to contact said person.
haifagirlParticipantI once read somewhere (I forgot who wrote it) a wonderful vort on the subject.
Hashem is One.
The gematria of ???? ???? is 612.
So, all you have to do is wear a black hat and believe in Hashem and you have all 613 mitzvos covered.
haifagirlParticipantWhy would somebody call 20 minutes before Shabbos to invite me for a meal? Didn’t she think I already had prepared my meals? Did she really think I did everything at the last minute and hadn’t started yet?
haifagirlParticipantI’m not registered for any party. In the U.S. I usually vote Libertarian. Here I usually vote Yahadut HaTorah.
haifagirlParticipantMy report cards always said something like “can’t sit still and is easily distracted.”
Meanwhile . . .
When one of my siblings was 5, I paid them $5 to read Macbeth so they they could say that they read Macbeth at the age of 5 in preschool.
I know one “they” was supposed to be “that,” so I let it go.
In my school my principle goes through all . . .
I’m very happy your school has a principle. So many don’t these days.
haifagirlParticipantYes, she was an atheist. But you are simplifying her philosophy to the extreme.
There is nothing antithetical to Torah about rewarding accomplishment rather than incompetence. At least, not that I know of.
haifagirlParticipantCarolyn Keene is not necessarily a woman. That’s a pseudonym for a whole group of writers, some of whom are men.
haifagirlParticipantThat reminds me of a time I was working with another person on seating arrangements for a banquet. I knew some of the people and she knew some of the people. When she would ask me about someone I would say “about my age,” and she would respond, “oh, old.” At the time I was 40.
haifagirlParticipantAbsolutely not frum, but a great writer: Ayn Rand.

haifagirlParticipantTry Kosher Challenge.
haifagirlParticipantI’m not sure, but I think reading books by women could lead to mixed dancing.
haifagirlParticipantWhat’s wrong with Amisloy?
April 12, 2013 9:45 am at 9:45 am in reply to: Contest: How Long Can You Go Without Chometz? #944705haifagirlParticipantI finally had chametz on Wednesay since it was Rosh Chodesh and I bought myself a treat.
haifagirlParticipantWho says vocal music is not called music?
Read through this thread:
http://www.theyeshivaworld.com/coffeeroom/topic/music-thats-supposiveley-aka-pella
haifagirlParticipanthaifagirl- cuz halacha differentiates them
I understand there is a difference in halacha. That’s not what I’m asking.
I am asking: why is INSTRUMENTAL music called “music” and VOCAL music not called “music”?
haifagirlParticipant(How about Haifa?)
I was just going to suggest it.
If you aren’t zocheh to live in Eretz Yisroel, go for Chicago.
haifagirlParticipantWhy do frum people think singing isn’t music? There is rhythm and melody. If there are two or more people singing, there is also harmony. Those are the three elements of music.
Just go and tell Placido Domingo what he does isn’t music. I dare you!
haifagirlParticipantAARGH!
aka = also known as – used when listing someone’s alias(es).
Example: Joseph, aka [insert all of Joseph’s other names here]
aka pella – also known as wonder?
a capella = in the style of the chapel – vocal music (yes, singing is music) without instrumental accompaniment
supposiveley? What’s (note the apostrophe) that? The word you are looking for is supposedly.
haifagirlParticipantNow let everyone explode: In one of the Satmer communities they are told ONLY to give C.Z. diamonds.
Why would this make anybody explode? I don’t think most people have any problem with CZs. The problem is if the girl doesn’t know it’s a CZ. I imagine that all the Satmar girls know it’s a CZ if that’s their minhag. (Dare I say, “Duh!”?)
It’s so sickening the trend of trial marriages nowadays.
Okay, I’m stumped. What’s a trial marriage?
haifagirlParticipantyo if u sy, dj is where it’s at.
What does that mean? Could someone please translate?
haifagirlParticipantFor what?
haifagirlParticipantI don’t turn mine over. I seal it off and use my Pesach kitchen.
March 20, 2013 9:42 pm at 9:42 pm in reply to: Stuffing Your Face w/ Marror, Red as a Tomato #940608haifagirlParticipantThe problem with horseradish is it isn’t bitter. It’s sharp. They are not the same.
haifagirlParticipantTrust in Hashem and happiness follows.
haifagirlParticipantBein hazmanim is when everybody feels the need to come to Haifa. The buses are so crowded; there are lines in all the stores. These are probably the same people who think there is no frumkeit in Haifa and therefore not a good place to live.
March 15, 2013 2:34 pm at 2:34 pm in reply to: Nurse Refused To Initiate CPR, What Is Your Opinion? #938833haifagirlParticipantPlease detail the times when CPR is inappropriate.
The only situations I know of are when a DNR is present.
and when death is obvious.
Otherwise how can you make a decision if it is appropriate or not?
I don’t know about any other situation, but I do know what happened with my mother. When she deteriorated to the point that it was more likely that CPR would do more damage than good, that is it would be likely to hasten death, the rav said to issue the DNR. I don’t remember the exact time frame, but it was several hours before she passed away.
The hospital had been asking about (pushing?) a DNR for several months as my mother was in-and-out of the hospital.
haifagirlParticipantI dunno, maybe their posts were censured or somethin…
Oh my, the mods are getting tough. The worst they’ve ever done to me is censor.
haifagirlParticipantI love the typo in the title. Kiruv is all about souls, isn’t it?
haifagirlParticipantAt this point, the MKs are not responsible to the voters, but to the parties and where they are placed on the list. Geographic representation would make them responsible to specific voters.
I happen to disagree.
If I live in an area that is heavily Sephardi, Shas would win. They don’t represent me.
With the current system, Yahadut HaTorah is responsible to the Ashkenazi Charedim. ALL the Ashkenazi Charedim–not just the ones in a particular geographic location that is heavily Ashkenazi Charedi.
haifagirlParticipantI have trouble understanding the problem with the brocha.
Let’s take an analogy:
The brocha on celery is ha’adamah. Now, if I make tuna salad, in addition to the tuna I might put in celery, pickles, onions, mayonnaise, garlic, maybe a few other things. When you are at my home for a meal, I would offer you some “tuna.” I wouldn’t say, “Would you like some tuna with celery, mayonnaise, etc.?”
So, if I offer you something called “rice,” why isn’t the brocha what one would make on rice? Is it because I say “rice” in Japanese instead of English? Does that really make a difference?
haifagirlParticipantI’m going go answer the question posed in the title:
Everyone Must Answer: Your Favorite Song
“Gretchen am Spinradde.” I especially like Elly Ameling singing it.
haifagirlParticipantHow many times does Ferd have to say his name is Ferd and not Fred?
haifagirlParticipantDiscrimination doesn’t equal bigotry.
Absolutely right!
