I heard the story from a repuatable source. I don’t remember where the shul was. I think someplace in NY. (That narrows it down, right?)

I heard of someone who was in a shul, and was wondering why there was a delay in the middle of layning. He was told the ba’al koreh answered his cell phone. Obviously not Wolfishmusings’s shul.

This is not a complaint. I just want to say I’m frustrated because I’m guessing that most, if not all, the mods are in NY and therefore nothing will be posted for an extra day.

NY Mom: I think you’re reading more into it than what Jax intended (although far be it for me to know what’s in Jax’s mind). I think he was just trying to say one is gold and the other is silver and that’s that. But I could be wrong.

I know a non-Israeli who does the same thing. Also gorgeous. She has fabrics hanging like drapes on three walls, and a tapestry-like fabric on the fourth wall. She also has pictures up and lots of lights.

Someone else I know has two chandeliers in his.

Any chance you wonderful mods, who do such fine work when you’re here, could come up with a schedule so that there is more coverage?

chochmas odom: So what you’re saying is the music in and of itself is not bad. It’s only the lyrics. Or did I misinterpret “ believe [it] is not so much the actual music but the lyrics, they are so trashy [it’s] astounding!!”?

And as for Beethoven, the difference style between him and whom? Mozart? Chopin? Gershwin? And . . .? Could you please finish the thought?

No words? Beethoven’s 9th symphony has words. Fidelio has words (can you imagine an opera without words?). He also wrote several lieder.

Whether or not these pieces have a bad hashpoah is debatable. But they certainly have words!

NY Mom: Thanks. Can I add a word about fire extinguishers? Put them in a GOOD place. I once was in someone’s kitchen and they had their fire extinguisher so that you had to reach over the stove to get it. It should be in the kitchen, near the door, away from the stove.

It also doesn’t hurt to have one in the hallway near the bedrooms.

I was told by the esrog dealer I usually go to that the more bumps it has the more beautiful it is. I told her if she had bumps she wouldn’t be beautiful. But then again, she’s not an esrog.

I recently saw some that were about twice as large as what I’m used to. I’m not sure what kind they were.

All those Jews in shul and no doctors? You’d be amazed at how many people are trained nowadays. And the shul (and most of the other shuls in the neighborhood) had plenty of “first aid” equipment that is even more difficult to use than an AED. Ever try starting an IV?

Bemused: I made my views well known. Offered to contribute quite a bit (for me) if other people would also contribute. Everybody told me not to waste my time, the AED was something we didn’t need.

NY Mom: That story was what reminded me. Every shul (and every place where people gather) should have at least one AED.

The biggest problem is that the government was too involved in the first place. We all want children to be safe, and taken care of in a safe environment. However, most people feel the way to ensure that is to have government licensing. There is no need for that. Instead, there should be some private body that certifies day care providers. If you want your child in a certified day care – fine. If you want your uncertified neighbor to look after your child for an hour in the morning – again fine.

There is no need for any law covering this situation in the first place.

Okay. I’m off my soapbox now. Everybody can resume what they were doing.

In the area where I used to live, I always complained that the shuls did not have AEDs. If I had money, I would have donated them, but I’m not wealthy and didn’t have enough to donate even one to my own shul. I used to say that the shuls will get AEDs as soon as someone has a heart attack and dies in shul, but I don’t know who would want to volunteer to be the one.

My friend’s father was niftar in shul. The next time I was in that shul, a few weeks after, I saw an AED. I just wish other shuls wouldn’t wait for someone else before they get them too.

I’m not 100% sure, but I believe adrenaline is produced in one of our endocrine glands. So you can’t use it up. Not quite sure how it works though. I’m too lazy to look it up on the internet and all my books (at least the ones I kept) are in storage right now.

I know a young woman who has no sense of direction and can’t read a map. She went out on a first date with a young man who is similarly afflicted.

He picked her up and then spent the next 2 hours lost on his way to the restaurant.

After the date, when he told his friends what had happened they asked what her reaction was. He told them she didn’t complain. She didn’t seem to mind at all.

They told him if she really didn’t mind being lost for 2 hours he should marry her. He did.

In general, a divorce will probably hurt the children’s chances for a shidduch. However, depending on the state of the marriage at that point, staying together could do irreparable harm to the children’s mental health.

So I’d say it depends on how well the couple can get along.

Not exactly on the topic, but having to do with shidduchim:

I used to work with a young lady who said she would never marry a BT.

I replied, “It’s a good thing your father didn’t feel that way.”

BTW, she is happily married. To an FFB.

I have a friend who called the shadchan and described her daughter: learning-disabled, slightly overweight, a bit different. The shadchan thanked her. She said this is one girl who she will remember. She is the only one on the list who isn’t gorgeous and at the top of her class.

I haven’t been out on too many dates because I’m way too picky. But luckily I have friends . . .

This happened a long time ago. Both my friend and her date are from the same out-of-town town. This was in the days before there were sensors in the highways to tell the traffic reporters where the traffic jams are. There was a traffic reporter office on the observation floor of a tall building. Her date had taken her to that building and arranged for a “tour” of the traffic reporter office.

Before it was time to meet with the reporter they were looking out one of the windows. He said, “I wonder what would happen if you just kept walking straight.” She replied that you would end up in the next state.

He asked what you happen if you kept going and she named the state after that.

He asked what you happen if you kept going and she said, “Eventually you’ll end up back here because the world is round.” She said he looked at her like he had no clue what she was talking about.

Then it was time to meet the reporter. He explained all the various things in the office and told them about how they have certain landmarks at which they aim the telescope. “For example, when the telescope is here you can see the [famous landmark in that city.]” Guy then grabbed the telescope, turned it so he could look through it and said, “Where is it? I don’t see it.”

That was their first and last date.

I have to add to Just-a-guy’s question. What about music that was goyish but then the lyrics were changed to make it “Jewish”? Since there are several “kosher” artists who do that, it apparently has someone’s haskamah. In which case, I would argue it has nothing to do with the music – the problem would be the lyrics.

On the other hand, what about Mattisyahu (and I would argue that what he does is not music)? He recorded with a xian rock group. Is that music kosher or un-kosher?
