But can you wear a colored shirt with jeans?
haifagirlParticipantEven in America I’ve heard people ask mothers of daughters, “How much did you pay for your son-in-law?” Especially if he’s on the “A list.”
haifagirlParticipantIt sounds like this might not be right for your daughter, but just today I heard about a new seminary, Shir Bamidbar. Since they are new, there is no history, the only information available is what you can get from their web site. It seems it is not for everyone, but for the right type, it looks pretty good.
haifagirlParticipantdo you only wear a hat when you daven
I hope he is also wearing a shirt. Even a colored one.
haifagirlParticipantThat’s my kind of Marxism.
haifagirlParticipantIn all seriousness, I’ve been to some very nice Chanukah parties at shul. The seating was separate. There were activities for the children. There was good food, and plenty of it.
I’ve also been to bad Chanukah parties.
I’m in favor of good parties. I’m not in favor of bad parties.
haifagirlParticipantI know I’ve said it before, but it bears repeating. Get out now! Get out while you still can!
haifagirlParticipantor mixed dancing
haifagirlParticipantAnd don’t forget Hilchos Shabbos! The more you know Hilchos Shabbos, the easier Shabbos is. How many times have I heard a parent say, “You can’t do that, it’s Shabbos,” when what the child was doing was either perfectly okay, or could have easily been okay if done with a shinui. Keep telling your kids they can’t do anything on Shabbos and how long do you think they will want to keep Shabbos.
If we want the girls to be good mothers, they need to learn Hilchos Shabbos.
I’m getting off my soapbox now.
haifagirlParticipanttzippi: I’ve seen it. It’s great. And unfortunately, so true.
haifagirlParticipant…unless you home school and have groceries delivered. Then you never have to leave the house.
And find a doctor who makes house calls.
haifagirlParticipantuseurbarin – A friend of mine belongs to a shidduch group. It’s a bunch of women who get together and try to help each other make shidduchim for their children and others. Some time back, they had a meeting where one of the woman was presenting her “notes.” She had just married off her last daughter and had notebooks filled with information about different boys. I was invited to the meeting as I am a quick typist and would be able to type up notes.
I heard almost no mention of midos. I did hear, however, whether each boy wore colored shirts and trimmed his beard. (Both of those are no-nos.)
I didn’t say anything during the meeting, but afterwards I did mention to my friend how disgusted I was that they seemed to care more about externalities than midos. She agreed that midos were important, but didn’t seem to think there was anything wrong with the way the information about the boys was presented.
haifagirlParticipantICOT – it’s a chicken and egg argument. People always say, “if so-and-so had any chance, the media would cover him.” And the media say, “nobody is interested, so we can’t cover the other candidates.”
I’m sure it the media would cover the alternative candidates, people would be interested.
haifagirlParticipantdemosthenes – I don’t recall seeing any of your posts before. I found this one quite enjoyable. I like your style.
haifagirlParticipanthaifagirl-
The media can’t control elections by allowing one candidate to explain his positions or editorialize without allowing his opponent(s) equal time. It also can’t accept advertising from one candidate without offering the other(s) a similar oportunity at a corresponding rate.
I imagine the NY Times(just as an example) would never accept Republican advertising if it didn’t have to.
The media cannot limit coverage to one candidate, but they do limit it to two. In most presidential elections there are at least 3 candidates on the ballot in every state, and some states have more. Why is it the media never cover them?
haifagirlParticipant. . . and doesn’t allow the media to control elections.
Don’t believe that the media don’t control elections. It was amazing that in the last election Ron Paul got any coverage at all.
In the 2004 election there were three candidates on the ballot in Illinois: Bush, Kerry and Michael Badnarik. The media covered Bush, Kerry and Ralph Nader.
On the day that Mr. Badnarik was speaking in Chicago, not one of the Chicago newspapers even mentioned it.
On election day I heard several people question who Badnarik was, since nobody ever heard of him until they received their ballot.
haifagirlParticipantICOT – I said “most” you said “every.” I won’t split hairs with you.
haifagirlParticipantActually, rikki, it’s not called communism. Communism is an economic system whereby the means of production are jointly owned by everyone. The word you meant to use was authoritarianism.
Most communist governments are also authoritarian. But so are fascist governments.
haifagirlParticipantstarwolf: You are an exception. Or you did something wrong. I’ve seen it done. I’ve done it myself. I’ve seen people who have had miraculous cures done via practitioners who rely on muscle resistance testing in their diagnoses. And I’m not using the word “miraculous” lightly. And these were all people who had tried every conventional (allopathic) treatment first.
haifagirlParticipantYou can Google “muscle resistance testing” or “applied kinesiology.”
haifagirlParticipantanon: Muscle resistance testing is a way to determine sensitivities to various substances. You can do it to yourself, but it’s easier to have someone do it to you. This sounds strange, but it really works.
Lie down and extend your left arm so that your left hand is toward the ceiling. Have someone try to push down your arm while you try to resist. Most likely you will be able to resist their push. If not, you have some deficiency and need to fix that. Try drinking some water. It could be you’re dehydrated.
Anyway, once you are able to resist, hold a suspected item in your right hand, and repeat the procedure. If the item (for example an egg) is something you are sensitive or allergic to, you will not be able to resist the push on your arm. The person will have NO trouble whatsoever pushing your arm down. If you are not sensitive to that item, you will be able to resist as you were before.
In between items rub your hands together several times to that any energy that was transferred to your hands is wiped away.
Again, I realize this sounds strange, and those practitioners of allopathic medicine will tell you it’s baloney, but it really does work.
haifagirlParticipantYes hud, jphone was joking. In a journalism workshop I once attended, the professor said, “Unless you’re Mike Royko, don’t write satire. He’s the only one who can get away with it. If anybody else does it, people take it seriously and don’t realize you’re joking.”
I’ve seen time and time and time again that professor was 100% correct.
haifagirlParticipantAny possibility of getting a private bus service?
haifagirlParticipantplonisalmonis: It sounds like you might be allergic to something in your house. You leave for an extended period and it gets better. You come home and it comes back. If I were you I would do muscle resistance testing with everyting in the house, and every place else you frequent in the neighborhood.
haifagirlParticipantNone of those things mentioned constitute a hate crime as currently defined. Threatening another person is called assault. Instigating a riot is just that. I’m not sure about “other dangers toward others.” I have no idea what that means. How are my words posing a danger to someone else.
Anyway, this is really off topic. If you want to discuss the Bill of Rights, or any other political topic, I’ll be happy to join you in another thread.
haifagirlParticipantOh yeah. I remember when I was on Lisinopril. Couldn’t stop coughing. Made me nuts.

So Rav Dovid Cohen wrote an entire book about Yiddish being a holy language, and never discusses sources or even if it’s a Mitzvah? A real poseik never takes anything for granted. He always looks at the sources. so I ask you, what are the sources? Hoisen?
Cherry: I have to agree with Jothar. He never said Rav Cohen is not a a real poseik. He is just asking a question. There is an implied syllogism there:
A real poseik looks at sources.
Rav Cohen is a real poseik
Therefore Rav Cohen looks at sources.
Now, Jothar wants to know what are those sources.
haifagirlParticipantMysay: If you go with bein_hasdorim’s old school Jewish teme, be sure to invite me. I’m especially looking forward to hava nagilah. Haven’t heard that in years.
haifagirlParticipantEequalsetc. – Huh?
haifagirlParticipant“perhaps a perversion of Karl Marx’s ‘Sell a man a fish, he eats for a day, teach a man how to fish, you ruin a wonderful business opportunity.'”
ronsr: I think you have it backwards. I think Karl Marx’s vesion is a perversion of the original.
The original is attributed to Confucius. He lived a little bit before Marx.
haifagirlParticipantI was never much of a lurker. I found the CR and started reading the top thread. It was “Random Questions.” At that time it was something like 86 pages. I didn’t want to post something that had already been posted, so I read through the whole thing. Of course, I quickly discovered other people didn’t have any qualms about posting stuff that was already posted as I was reading the same things two or three times. (It’s even worse in the “A Humorous Item” thread.)
Anyway, as soon as I got through ALL those pages, I started posting right away. And I can’t eve begin to tell you how much time I’ve wasted in the CR. Right now I should be cleaning the kitchen.
haifagirlParticipantI realize Eretz Yisroel is different from the US, but in the Bayit Vegan section of Yerushalayim, they play music for about 5 minutes before licht bentchin. Then the music stops and they blast the siren. It’s really quite a pleasant way to give a warning that it’s getting late.
haifagirlParticipantsunflower: Rene Descartes was a French philosopher. One of his most famous quotes is, “I think, therefore I am.”
Did you have trouble with any of the other jokes?
haifagirlParticipantThe back button works if I go directly to the last post. However, if I’m trying to catch up on a 5-page thread that I’m looking at for the first time, I’d have to hit the back button a whole bunch of times.
haifagirlParticipantI hope this isn’t a repeat:
A priest, a minister, and a rabbi go into a bar. The priest says to the others, “Hey, did you hear the one about us?”
haifagirlParticipantBear: Pre-1A? Isn’t that like 4 years old? What about her apgar score? When did she start walking? Talking? If you just check from pre-1A on, you miss a lot of very important information.
haifagirlParticipantI don’t know of any place in the U.S. where just saying things is a crime. I’m not saying such a law doesn’t exist, just that I don’t know of one. If you do, please specify.
I think what you are saying is your right to extend your arm stops at my nose.
People do have a right to smoke. People also have a right to choose what behavior is appropriate or inappropriate on their property.
The problem with smoking bans is that governments have now declared what behavior is appropriate on private property.
I am not a smoker. I am just a lover of the Constitution and of liberty.
haifagirlParticipantMods: Is there a quick way to get back to the coffee room page without having to scroll back up to the top?
haifagirlParticipantI agree that this is just the beginning. Don’t wait until it’s too late. Get out now. I have extra room in my apartment if anyone wants to come to Haifa.
haifagirlParticipantI took a tour of a shmura matza bakery once. Before they set the time and mixed the flour and water, all the employees yelled out, “L’shem mitzva matzah.”
So I think it would be appropriate before cutting the material, stitching it, pressing it, etc., it would appropriate for all the employees to yell, “L’shem mitzva chultzah lavanah.”
haifagirlParticipant80: Thanks.
haifagirlParticipantMods: Can you please tell me what’s wrong with the jokes I tried to post? If I know what the problem is, I won’t do it again.
haifagirlParticipantAccording to Bartlett’s, it’s a Chinese proverb.
haifagirlParticipantYour name is similar?
haifagirlParticipantI love Yiddish. It expresses things in a way no other language can. I just wish I could speak it and I hope it never dies. But holy? I would doubt that.
haifagirlParticipantI haven’t really gotten into this thread, but I’m thinking it’s a nice idea. It would be especially nice to know which, if any, mods are here.
Anyway, I’m here. But I’ll be leaving soon to go to a shiur.
haifagirlParticipantOne woman I know who makes a lot of sheva brachos tells the guests (and the chosson and kallah) that her husband has to leave for his shiur at 8 p.m. (of course, that only works if your husband really does have a shiur at 8 p.m. as hers does). If they don’t bentch by the time he has to leave, they won’t have a minyan.
This usually works.
haifagirlParticipantIt also helps if you know the doctor’s philosphy. I had a doctor who was a phramacist before she became a physician. She was always quick to prescribe drugs. Other doctors are not necessarily like that. In general, I have found that DOs are less likely to prescribe drugs than MDs. But that could just be my experience.
haifagirlParticipantWhen the mods are on, they’re great. But we need some mods who either live on the other side of the ocean, or who are insomniacs.
check, check

Food usually works to attract people. Imagine someone standing out there offering to make kiddush for these people and giving them food. Any way we could get some cholent (I forgot, what is the approved CR spelling?) out there too?
