As someone who as never been to NY, I am frequently amazed by what I hear coming out of New Yorkers’ mouths. They seem not to know anything outside of NY. (Notice I said “seem” not that they really do not know. I’m sure some do.)

A woman I know who is from Chicago, said when she was a girl at camp, a girl from NY asked her if she and another girl went to school together. She said, “I live in Chicago, she lives in Cleveland.”

To that, the New Yorker replied, “Right. So do you go to school together?”

(For those of you “in-town,” Chicago and Cleveland are a 5-hour or so drive apart.)

jphone: I think what he really meant was the amount of time a horse breathes a certain number of breaths, which is the opposite of what you said.

Example 1: How long does it take a horse to breathe x times? Then that would be y amount of time of sleeping.

Example 2: How many times does a horse breathe in x amount of time? Irrelevant. How does that determine how long a person has to sleep for?

I have a friend with a lot of tuition expenses. She looked at the possibility of getting a job. Because of where her husband’s income placed them in the tax bracket, if she had gotten a job, it would have pushed them in to the next bracket and they would have ended up paying more than she was making. So for her to get a job would have cost them money.

Before a woman gets a job, she should look at the tax ramifications, the amount she will have to pay in day care for her children, transportation costs to get to and from work, and any other expenses that she would not have if she didn’t work. In some cases, working just doesn’t pay.

I’m going to be in trouble now, but yes, I wash negel vasser if I go to the bathroom in the middle of the night. I was told by my Rav not to, and given really good halachic reasons, but I just don’t feel clean if I don’t.

I actually wanted to start thread on grammar, so I was thrilled to find one had been started for me.

I am wondering why it is that most of the people that post here cannot put together a proper sentence.

    people that post here

Nobody seemed to notice the mod’s comment. He (she?) got it. Should have have been:

I am wondering why it is that most of the people WHO post here cannot put together a proper sentence.

As a frum female English teacher

“For every necessary comma ommitted, there is one superfluous comma added.” Ditto for apostrophes.

And there’s the necessary comma that was omitted. (Notice the use of “that” when referring to a thing, as opposed to “who” when referring to a person.)

    Should have been:

As a frum, female English teacher . . . (Two or more adjectives in a row need commas separating them.)

If you want your message to be understood by those who understand txt language, feel free to use it.

However, if you want your message to be understood by everybody, it is best to use proper grammar (not grammer). That way there is less room for confusion and misinterpretation.

And while we’re on the subject, do we all know the difference between people and things? When referring to people we use the word “who.” “That” is reserved for things.

Wrong: The man that was walking down the street . . .

Right: The man who was walking down the street . . .

A man I know in my previous city wanted a gun and his wife was against it. He finally told her he had one after it had been in the house for 3 years. I don’t recommend that method.

I will echo a lot of other people and say you should take your wife for a gun safety course and get her used to it.

I don’t currently own a gun as I don’t feel I need one. But there was a time I did. I made sure I knew how to use it.

And finally, I would recommend that people see the video “Innocents Betrayed” which was produced by Jews for the Preservation of Firearms Ownership. It’s about various governments that enacted gun control laws and what happened after.

Maybe it’s just time to get “mehadrin” buses in NY. Or perhaps, maybe it’s time for all Jews to move “out-of-town” to EY. Although, to be honest, you won’t like a lot of what you see on the buses here either. (And that goes for Yerushalayim too, not just Haifa.)

It is about gratitude for the bounty we have been given. This seems like a very Jewish theme to me.

But here’s the problem. People will say, “What’s wrong with Thanksgiving? It’s an entire day set aside to give thanks to Hashem.”

To which I usually reply, “And what do you do the other 364?”

ronsr and starwolf: There are many Christian churches who hold Thanksgiving Day services, complete with special Thanksgiving hymns.

If you’re looking for the quintessential secular, American holiday, try Labor Day. It was made up because workers didn’t have any days off between July 4th and Thanksgiving.

A friend of mine went to a certain mekubal. He didn’t really want to, but he knew his wife would be upset if he didn’t take her. He had a list of 4 questions. But before he went in he decided not to give him the list, and instead to ask the questions himself. He did, however, hand him a list of the names of everyone in his family. The mekubal then proceeded to answer every question that was on the first list. When he left, he checked his pocket to make sure he hadn’t given the wrong paper by mistake. It was still in his pocket.
