I know somone who just “knew” on the second date that if he went through the shadchan the girl would say no to a third date. He also had a strong feeling she would be too embarrassed to say no if he asked her directly. So before the second date ended he asked her for a third date.

She was too embarrassed to say no, so they had that third date. Not only did they get married, but they are still married long enough that they are grandparents.

And later on he found out he was right about something else – she would have said no to a third date if he had gone through the shadchan.

Tzirel (I knew a Tzirel who was convinced her parents made up the name, so she used her middle name. Eventually she discovered her parents didn’t make it up. But by that time everyone knew her by her middle name.)

Osnat is fairly common here in EY.

One of the most unusual names I ran into was a non-frum man whom I spoke to on the phone while I was at work. His parents gave him and his brother Jewish names, but of course, they didn’t use them. Probably a good thing. His name was Rochel and his brother’s was Gitel.

I understand the problems. I never said she should seek it out. I just felt she shouldn’t dismiss someone JUST BECAUSE he is a BT.

If she had had a bad experience with her grandparents I could understand her attitude. But in her case, she did not have those problems with her non-frum grandparents. They were very supportive and attended all the siddur parties and chumash parties, and all other simchas. They were thrilled to have so many grandchildren (and it was a huge family) and wanted to celebrate with them.

Which reminds of a young lady I know. She is now happily married with a bunch of kids, but I knew her before that, in the days when she was looking.

She once told me she would never consider a BT. I replied, “Really? It’s a good thing your father didn’t feel that way.”

Is this a done deal, or there is a chance that it will still not go through?

The House passed a bill and the Senate passed a bill. The two bills are similar, but not identical. Now the two bills have to be reconciled into one agreed-upon bill. Then it will go to Obama for his signature.

And, heimesheyid, I don’t want to offend you, but your question shows why the Jewish schools need to have more secular education, especially history and current events.

I hope you’re not a betting man. In the US I am uninsurable. No way would I want to forcibly take money from someone else to pay for my care. (And if you don’t think taxes are taken forcibly, why do those who enforce collections carry guns?)

Also, study a little history. The number of medical schools was limited years ago by the AMA in an effort to keep down the numbers of doctors, thereby eliminating competition for health care dollars.

Helping over thirty million Americans without insurance, most of whom are uninsurable, is a good thing.

charliehall: What about all the millions of Americans whose taxes (not to mention insurance premiums) are going to go up to cover this? Shouldn’t we care about them, too?

Most persons for whom such decisions must be made are currently covered by Medicare and this will not change.

Hard to believe that it won’t change, since the government has already said that they are cutting quite a bit of Medicare coverage.

    Poster,

I can’t answer all your questions, but I do know a (very) little.

The insurance that people must buy is not government insurance. There was an option for people 55 and older to buy Medicare, but that provision was deleted.

Currently, the proposed fine for people not buying insurance is $750/year. For most people that is cheaper than buying insurance. So for a young, healthy person, it pays not to buy insurance and pay the fine instead.

If that uninsured person gets sick, he can then buy insurance, and since the insurance companies are not allowed to turn anybody away for pre-existing conditions, he’s guaranteed to get insurance.

Since the insurance companies are going to be insuring a lot more people, many of whom have pre-existing conditions, the premiums for everybody are going to go up.

I know this just barely scratches the surface of the 2000+ page bill the Senate just passed, but I hope it helps.

What if someone wanted to marry his pet? Maybe he really LOVES his dog!

A bit off topic, but while going through some old e-mails, I found a video someone sent me of a “bar mitzvah” for a dog. This party cost the owner $10,000.

If people can make a “bar mitzvah” for their dog, can marriage to it be far behind?

As I’ve said before, teenagers need SUPERVISION when using Facebook. Today I found some very disturbing things that one of my “Facebook friends,” the teenage son of a friend of mine, had posted. I immediately sent the information to his parents.

This is not the first time I’ve seen things on Facebook that would not be there if parents were supervising their children. I’ve contacted parents in the past, and once, when I didn’t know a girl, I contacted the principal of her school.

Facebook is a wonderful tool, but like all tools, teenagers need SUPERVISION when using it.

I had a funny experience with Google Translate. I was looking for an apartment and reading through ads online when I discovered Google Translate. Oh happy day! I could read the ads in English, which is infinitely easier. But one ad made me realize that I had to verify everything in the original Hebrew. One ad said:

    ????? ????? ????? ????? ??????? ??? ???

    Google translated it as:

Instead of a Central Bus Station close to water heater.

Here’s a recipe for the pie:

    Prep Time: 20 minutes

    Cook Time: 15 minutes

    Ingredients:

    Preparation:

Heat the oven to 425F/220C/Gas 7

    Make the Pastry

The dough can also be made in a food processor by mixing the flour, butter and salt in the bowl of the processor on a pulse setting. When the mixture resembles breadcrumbs, add the water, slowly, through the funnel until the dough comes together in a ball. Wrap in Saran wrap/ Clingfilm and chill as above.

    Assemble the Pies

Mince pies are delicious served hot or cold on their own or with Brandy Butter.

Mini mince pies make delicious “Petit Fours” served after dinner with a cup of coffee. Make as above but use a canape-sized bun tin and cut circles accordingly.

Many Jewish groups objected to the Seinfeld show precisely because he WASN’T openly Jewish. His character never identified himself as Jewish, none of the girls he dated ever were identifiably Jewish, and there were no signs of jewishness around his home.

Just a slight exaggeration. I can’t remember if his character ever identified himself as Jewish, but there was at least one girl he went out with who kept kosher. And after Elaine was told by a rabbi that she has “shiksappeal” she asked Jerry if that were true.
