Than I.
haifagirlParticipantAs I said, the one I bought was very cheap (about $35 or $40). It didn’t have anybody dancing.
haifagirlParticipantYet more from Google translate:
I have a doctor’s appointment today. Her first name is Tovah. The English version of the screen with her info lists her first name as “good.” Okay, that one’s not so bad.
Today’s date is “Bet tribe Ts”a.”
On the screen listing all the medications I’ve bought, ??????? ????, which should be translated as “member co-payment” is “participation boyfriend.”
haifagirlParticipantIt’s been years since I’ve had a PDA, but I have no problem with the calendar on my phone (a Nokia, but I’d have to look up the model). What does your PDA do that the phone doesn’t?
haifagirlParticipanti’m not sure how you could answer this question without knowing the situation
You got that right. I was once in a cell phone store and while I was waiting I saw a man buying a cell phone for his son as a Bar Mitzvah present. I couldn’t figure out why a boy that age would need a cell phone. But as the father gave the phone to his son he said, “Now your mother won’t be able to stop me from talking to you.”
That was a case where the boy definitely needed a cell phone. And it taught me not to be so quick to judge.
haifagirlParticipantI knew someone named Pesach and during Sukkos some of his friends would call him Sukkos.
haifagirlParticipantThe one I used to own did not have words. Most of the songs on there I didn’t recognize. I enjoyed it a lot. It was the cheapest one I could find. I bought it online. It was the kind that hooked up to a tv and didn’t need a special game console.
haifagirlParticipantAnd that doesn’t answer my question of how do I turn off the tapping?
haifagirlParticipantIt’s a laptop. Why would I need a mouse?
haifagirlParticipantThanks 80. That’s what I Googled, too. However, when I click on control panel->mouse, there is nothing about turning off the tapping feature. There is, however, a mouse driver installed. I’m guessing my computer guy installed the mouse driver so he could use a mouse while he tested the computer. If I delete the mouse driver will I run into any problems?
haifagirlParticipantWhen I got my computer it had Vista and I was able to turn off the “tapping” feature. Now I just changed to XP and I can’t figure out how to do it. There is a mouse driver installed (I’m guessing my computer guy did it as I don’t own a mouse) and I’m wondering if that is preventing me from turning off the tapping feature.
Is there a way to turn it off?
haifagirlParticipantAs an older single, I would have to agree with the other singles on this thread that the Age Gap is not the primary cause. If it were up to me, I would have more mixed events where people could meet each other. Not just singles. Singles events feel too contrived. An event that is open to PEOPLE will have a good mix of singles and married people. The singles will meet each other and will meet married people who might know other singles who aren’t there.
A good type of event would be some kind of shiur with a refreshment/mingling period after. This also gives people an automatic topic to talk about (the shiur) so they have something to fall back on if conversation has a lull.
haifagirlParticipantOne night my friend put her daughter to bed (she was about 3 at the time) and an hour later her daughter was back downstairs in the living room. My friend asked her what she was doing out of bed and she replied, “I sleeped already.”
haifagirlParticipantMost people I know freeze large containers of soup. If you freeze your chicken soup in ice cube trays or small containers, if you need a single serving for someone who is sick, it defrosts much quicker.
haifagirlParticipantI just got my computer back from the guy who fixed it. It’s a Toshiba computer and it had Vista. I was having terrible problems and last week it just starting locking up all the time. The computer guy told me it’s a known problem that Toshiba computers don’t work well with Vista and he gave me XP. I’m thrilled to be back!
haifagirlParticipantRabbi Lawrence Kellemen has a shiur you can hear online about when his son was born. He talks about the feeling that he’s davening and nobody is listening. It’s very inspirational.
haifagirlParticipantNot exactly a tip (sorry 80):
I just got my computer back. It seems the problem was that Toshiba computers have a problem with Vista. Something to be aware of.
haifagirlParticipantDenial, Anger, Bargaining, Acceptance & Depression.
Let’s see, when I lost my mother I went through Acceptance, Depression, Acceptance.
When I lost my father I went through Acceptance, Denial, Acceptance, Depression, Acceptance, Depression, Acceptance, Depression . . .
Somehow I missed out on the Anger and Bargaining. And the reason there was Denial with my father and not my mother is probably because I was there when she died but not there when he died.
haifagirlParticipantYou know who matured early? – the boys who grew up on farms, in the shtetls of Europe, in places where boys AND girls had real responsibilities from the time they were toddlers. They learned how to be mature, because they had to grow up quickly.
You know who also matures early? The boys (and girls) who serve in the IDF.
haifagirlParticipantIn a similar vein, I know someone whose son wanted to dress as Achashverosh, but she didn’t want her son dressed as a rasha. So she let him dress as a king, but told him he was really Mordechai wearing the king’s clothes.
haifagirlParticipantVery few travel that great a distance without being fairly certain that it is VERY shayach.
I have to disagree. I know several young men who did a lot of traveling to many different cities, many times. Maybe people in NY don’t travel much, but from other communities they do.
haifagirlParticipantBut if you want to discuss proposals, here is a far better one. No shadchan should get one penny until three years of successful and happy marriage. That would clean up the so called industry overnight.
I second the motion.

4 cups brown rice
5 cups water
pinch sea salt
Wash the rice and put in bottom of pressure cooker. Add water and salt. Cover and bring to pressure. Put a flame tame under the pressure cooker and lower heat to medium (enough to maintain pressure). Cook 45 minutes.
Best rice ever.
haifagirlParticipantOkay. I admit it. I like ABBA. So it was a pleasant surprise to her “The Winner Takes It All” on YWN Radio. Okay, so the words were different, and it was Dedi singing, but I know ABBA when I hear it.
January 7, 2010 5:44 am at 5:44 am in reply to: Recipes for People Who Don’t Know How to Cook #672178haifagirlParticipantwho doesn’t have a rice steamer?
Feh! Rice turns out best when cooked in a pressure cooker.
haifagirlParticipantwhere’s haifagirl when you need her
Asleep!
haifagirlParticipantDoes AC change directions?
haifagirlParticipantWhy not just supply new electicity to the light with one wire?
I know absolutely nothing about electricity. But don’t you need a complete circuit for the electricity to flow? And with only one wire, wouldn’t that be like breaking a connection somewhere in the middle?

haifagirlParticipantas long as the father is the genetic father of the baby.
Okay. I confess my ignorance. Why would that matter? After all, it doesn’t matter if the father is a [non-Jew].

January 5, 2010 3:44 pm at 3:44 pm in reply to: Yeshiva Principal Enforcing No-Cell-Phone Policy; Proper Or Not? #673508haifagirlParticipantWOuld you feel the same way if it were random drug testing?
Absolutely not. If the choice is empyting pockets for a cell phone or random drug testing, I’ll have to go with emptying pockets.
Emptying pockets is demeaning and an invasion of privacy.
Random drug testing, is much worse as it requires people to submit their bodily fluids.
If there is a reason to suspect a particular student is using illegal drugs, that student should be dealt with. But to do a random search without cause is not a way to engender respect for the hanhala. Why treat all the students as suspects?
The one possible exception to this would be a yeshiva for “problem” boys. But in a regular yeshiva where they have standards of admission and the boys come from good families I don’t see any reason to treat the bochurim as possible criminals.
haifagirlParticipantI’ve known a few Betzalels. No Sroya, but a few Sroyohus (they’re all related).
haifagirlParticipantIf you don’t care about English speakers, Haifa is beautiful and affordable.
haifagirlParticipantHaifa is beautiful and there are some interesting places here.
January 4, 2010 7:41 pm at 7:41 pm in reply to: Yeshiva Principal Enforcing No-Cell-Phone Policy; Proper Or Not? #673487haifagirlParticipantB&H, for one, has a strictly enforced rule prohibiting the use of cell phones for employees: and that’s for adults!
Most people on this thread do not have a problem with cell phones being banned.
The question is, does B&H have their employees empty their pockets?
haifagirlParticipantAnd you seem to be as disconnected to reality when you rant and rave about government insurance — the HCR bill that passed the Senate creates no new government insurance program.
You’re right. The bill has no new government insurance program. But it does have the creation of a new department along with a bloated bureaucracy. The people in that department are not volunteers. They need to be paid. And where do you think the money will come from?
January 4, 2010 1:06 pm at 1:06 pm in reply to: Yeshiva Principal Enforcing No-Cell-Phone Policy; Proper Or Not? #673473haifagirlParticipantI’d like a few more details. Does he randomly have the bochurim empty their pockets? Is it all the bochurim or does he randomly choose certain ones each time? Has he been doing this in response to a particular problem?
If there hasn’t been a problem then he is probably going overboard, although I would like to hear his side before making that determination.
In general, I feel that if the students are treated with respect they will respect the rules. If the students aren’t respecting the rules, there are bigger problems there than just cell phones.
haifagirlParticipantSince usually (at least at all the weddings I’ve attended), the music people walk down to is instrumental. Therefore, the words would seem to be irrelevant.
The mods probably won’t let this next part through, but I’ve always thought it would be really cool to walk down to the second section of Chopin’s funeral march. I figure those who don’t know it will just think it’s a beautiful piece of music, and those who do know will be amused.
haifagirlParticipantI do know someone who posted several pictures around the house. The mouse went away. After the exterminator came.
haifagirlParticipantI just heard a song on YWN Radio – Hela by MBD. Can anybody translate that for me or tell me where I can find the lyrics? I am curious as to why “La Marseillaise” is quoted.
January 4, 2010 7:54 am at 7:54 am in reply to: Yeshiva Principal Enforcing No-Cell-Phone Policy; Proper Or Not? #673469haifagirlParticipantAt the school where I used to teach, the girls were allowed to bring cell phones to school, but they weren’t allowed to have them in class. When they came in they had to leave their phones in the office. They could use their phones in the office when they weren’t in class, and they could take them at lunch time. If any girl was caught with a cell phone in class, it would have been confiscated. I don’t know if any girl ever had one in class. The policy really seemed to work.
haifagirlParticipantPhyllis: Osnat is not that uncommon in EY.
hello: I’m with bear on this one. I don’t speak Yiddish, but fruehling is German for spring. So his explanation makes sense.
haifagirlParticipantanonymrs:
As far as I know, oomis is correct:
If there was a miscarriage in the first pregnancy, there is no requirement for a pidyon on the next baby born if it is male, since a pregnancy has already exited the womb previously, even though it was not viable.
I never heard about a pidyon being required for a second child if the first was by C-section.
Also, I believe, but may be wrong, a pidyon is not required if the bechor was delivered by C-section.
haifagirlParticipantI believe it has to do with how far along the pregnancy is. If it’s less than 40 days it doesn’t “count.”
haifagirlParticipantIt’s not the age gap?! Shhh. Don’t tell AZ.
haifagirlParticipantOriginally the firstborns were supposed to be the kohanim. After the golden calf they lost that honor and it was given to Aharon and his descendants since they were from the tribe of Levi and the Leviim did not participate in the golden calf.
Because the firstborns are no longer the kohanim, they must be redeemed. Leviim and Kohanim do not need to be redeemed as they are still eligible to serve in the beis hamikdosh.
haifagirlParticipantestherh: You are so right. Several years ago I had a virus. (The doctor couldn’t find any other explanation, so she decided it must be a virus.) It began slowly. One knee hurt a bit. Then the other knee hurt. It wasn’t long before every joint hurt. Walking was extremely painful. She was probably right that it was a virus, as it eventually went away. I love to walk. And since that time, I am grateful for every step I take.
More recently I had an illness that wasn’t terribly serious, but it kept me in bed for over a week and I could barely eat. Erev Shabbos during that time I had to go out and buy bread and wine. I barely made it to the store and had to take a bus home. Two weeks later I was able to complete all my errands. I didn’t do anything extraordinary that day, but I realized that we need to thank Hashem that we can get through an ordinary day. Just being able to do what’s ordinary is a tremendous bracha that we so often do not appreciate.
I’m very glad that you recovered from that reaction and pray that it never happens again and that you have a speedy refuah shleimah.
haifagirlParticipantb. ben Gurion DeLorean
haifagirlParticipantI have a Yiddish name, so no Israeli is able to pronounce it. It isn’t an unusual name, but they usually just skip it and call me by my middle name.
haifagirlParticipantWow! You two are good. Didn’t take you long at all. I’m really impressed!
