haifagirlParticipant
When friend who is my age became a bubby, I suddenly didn’t mind being a girl.
And it’s my forte (French word meaning strength – literally “strong”) and not my forte (Italian word meaning loud – which, by the way, doesn’t have an acute accent).
haifagirlParticipantNo, I live in Haifa. According to weather.com it is currently 82 and feels like 86 (that’s Fahrenheit, by the way).
haifagirlParticipantCouldn’t help you. I don’t own an air conditioner. And I don’t own a fan. What do I need it for?
haifagirlParticipantSometimes we don’t take it as a compliment.
It’s rough to be called a girl when someone 10 years younger is called a married woman. It’s even stranger to be called a girl when someone 30 years younger is called a married woman.
And it’s really difficult when someone 30 years younger is called an older single.
And as you can tell from my handle, sometimes we learn to accept it.
haifagirlParticipantNo, it is all in third person. Except attah.
Well, actually it can be either. Regardless, both the opening and closing of the blessing are in the first person, as is the entire remainder of shemona esrei. The only part that is clearly in the third person is lemaan shemo.
First person? I don’t recall the word “ani” in their anywhere. Please point it out. (Or do you not know that first person is I, second person is you, third person is he?)
haifagirlParticipantWhen I was a cleaning lady, I was extremely uncomfortable having to do things in the bedroom – change linens, etc. So I understand how you feel. I don’t remember if I ever had to deal with the husband’s laundry, but it would have made me uncomfortable, too.
haifagirlParticipantYes, we have a Grand Canyon in Israel. You can Google it.
haifagirlParticipantWhat a bunch of fakers, and hippocrates.
The Agudah is the father of medicine?
haifagirlParticipantWhy come to Israel to go to a mall? Toys “R” Us doesn’t look any different here!
But, since you asked, in Haifa, there is the Grand Canyon (supposedly the biggest mall in Israel, but that doesn’t mean much), Cinemall and Haifa Mall which are all large malls. Castra is the only one worth going to, in my opinion, because it is unique. There are also smaller malls: Horev Center, City Center, and several others that I can’t think of at the moment.
Kiryon, in Kiryat Bialik, is also a large mall, and then there’s Hutzot HaMifratz which is on the way to Kiryat Bialik, but I don’t remember exactly what that area is called.
If you really want to go shopping (and there’s nothing wrong with that), try going to the smaller stores. They’re much more interesting than the malls, which, other than Castra, look like all the malls in the U.S.
haifagirlParticipantObviously tzedakah.
Buy an apartment.
Help a whole bunch of friends make aliyah.
Go back to school. Permanently!
June 21, 2011 7:32 am at 7:32 am in reply to: Kula Creep – The Creation and Use of Non-Existent "Kula's" #779706haifagirlParticipantI highly recommend the movie America: Freedom to Fascism. You can Google it.
haifagirlParticipanthaifagirl, I have a question for you. Why is the h in the “haifa” part of your name not capitalized? (Serious.)
I never capitalize my user name. It’s just easier that way.
haifagirlParticipantYeah, how does that work?
June 18, 2011 7:56 pm at 7:56 pm in reply to: Yet another tznius issue (but probably not a crisis) #778297haifagirlParticipantI worded my original post badly. So I’m going to give it another try.
Would you wear, or let your high-school-age daughter wear, a blouse that is a solid, light color, with an eye-catching design right on the left side of the chest?
haifagirlParticipanther friend did not say it is assur for all.
this is what her friend said: When I mentioned I always see plenty of chareidim in the library, she said, “Well, they aren’t really chareidim. see haifagirls 3rd post or so.
you of course are welcome to enter a library.
Actually she did say it is assur for all. That’s when I responded about all the chareidim I see in the library.
haifagirlParticipantYes, I asked her. She said if the salads remain on the table they become fleishig. I asked my LOR. He said they’ll become fleishig if you take from them with a dirty spoon, but not from simply being on the table.
June 17, 2011 3:07 pm at 3:07 pm in reply to: Yet another tznius issue (but probably not a crisis) #778294haifagirlParticipantIf you would see these uniforms you would understand. Unfortunately I can’t post pictures here.
haifagirlParticipantUnfortunately, the chumras I mentioned are things my friend actually believes. When I mentioned I always see plenty of chareidim in the library, she said, “Well, they aren’t really chareidim.”
And I’ve eaten many Shabbos meals at her house. She always insists the salads be removed from the table before the meat is brought out.
haifagirlParticipantA parve salad will become fleishig by sitting on the same table with meat.
I should have specified that’s even if nobody touches the salad while the meat is on the table.
haifagirlParticipantA lot of shredded cabbage
Assorted frozen vegetables of your choice
A can of mushrooms
A large can of ground tomatoes
A clove or two of minced garlic
Water
June 16, 2011 5:59 pm at 5:59 pm in reply to: Yet another tznius issue (but probably not a crisis) #778269haifagirlParticipantThey were high school girls. If I had a daughter, I would not let her wear those blouses. The seminary girls wear uniforms, but there is no writing on them. Why do the high school girls need writing on their blouses.
haifagirlParticipantThe fact that you knew to even ask indicates you know that there is.
Not necessarily. I have a friend who’s a chumrah queen and is always finding something wrong with nearly everything. When I ask my LOR, it usually turns out to be one of her made-up chumrahs.
June 16, 2011 4:58 pm at 4:58 pm in reply to: Yet another tznius issue (but probably not a crisis) #778264haifagirlParticipantDo you want your daughter walking around with items that attract the eye to the chest?
June 16, 2011 4:33 pm at 4:33 pm in reply to: Yet another tznius issue (but probably not a crisis) #778262haifagirlParticipantAnd thank you ChanieE.
June 16, 2011 4:32 pm at 4:32 pm in reply to: Yet another tznius issue (but probably not a crisis) #778261haifagirlParticipantSo many people have shoulder patches on their uniforms: police, security guards, EMTs, etc. Why can’t school uniforms have shoulder patches?
June 16, 2011 3:36 pm at 3:36 pm in reply to: Yet another tznius issue (but probably not a crisis) #778255haifagirlParticipantI am serious. I think the uniform is disgusting. They could have the logo on a shoulder patch. Why don’t they?
haifagirlParticipantYes. There is a wonderful shiur on Yeshiva Migdal Torah’s web site called “Schindler’s Fish” about loving a fellow Jew. (It’s about 20 minutes long.) Well worth the listen.
haifagirlParticipantsuppose its you with the 135 and your friend with the 110. how do you think that would go.
That’s the relationship I have with many of my friends and we get along very well. I just don’t hang out with them when I’m looking for intellectual stimulation.
The high IQ members of MENSA that I’ve met are all nuts,
You haven’t met too many members, have you? And isn’t that loshon hora?
140 and above, guiness.
Hey! I’m a beer! Cool!
haifagirlParticipantAccording to the free, online test I just took, it’s 149. Of course, each test uses a different scale. The percentile score is a more accurate representation. On real tests I’ve taken in the past, I’ve scored at or above the 98th percentile.
haifagirlParticipantI would rather be popular, and then my friends can help me along in the brainy areas. [edited for spelling and grammar]
What makes you think you will have smart friends? Smart people like to hang out with other smart people.
haifagirlParticipantIf you’re coming up to Haifa and looking for places to eat, unfortunately, unless you hold by Haifa rabbanut, the pickings are mighty slim.
For milchigs, try All-American Pizza, and for fleischigs try Falafel Amar. Both are on Bar Kochbah St. There are a few other places too.
haifagirlParticipantAnd nobody mentioned Haifa? It’s the most beautiful spot on Earth!
Walk along the beach (there are various promenades).
Take in the view from the Louis Promenade at the top of the hill.
The zoo is small but quite beautiful.
(Be sure to ride the Carmelit – our subway – when you go up to the promenade or the zoo. It’s worth the experience.)
The Haifa City Museum will tell you about the history of Haifa (and it’s small so it doesn’t take much time).
A walk through German Colony is also very nice. (The Haifa City Museum is there.)
The Hecht Museum is great if you like archaeology (and it’s free!).
There are several other museums, too. The best ones are the National Maritime Museum and, next door, the Clandestine Immigration and Naval Museum is a lot of fun.
There is also Madatech, the national science museum, but I’ve never been there.
If you like art, Castra is a great mall. We have many other malls, too, but if you’ve seen a mall, you’ve seen ’em all. 🙂
There are several routes marked on maps for various scenic walks throughout Haifa, but I don’t know how old your grandmother is.
There is Eliyahu’s cave where he hid for some time. (Frankly, it’s a bit disappointing.)
And of course, you can just walk around the frum neighborhoods and see how friendly all the people are.
haifagirlParticipantWhen I make a French roast I put onion slices (about 2 or 3 onions, depending on their size) and carrot chunks (about 1″) from 3 or 4 carrots and 1/2 lb. mushrooms cut in quarters in the bottom of the pot. Then I put in the roast, season it with pepper and garlic powder. Then I pour in a bottle (yes, the whole bottle) of burgundy wine. Bring to a boil and simmer for about 3 hours or more (I usually take a nap as the fumes make me sleepy).
Remove from the pot and let it sit for a bit.
Meanwhile, add one can of tomato paste to the gravy and stir until smooth.
Slice the roast and add it back into the gravy until ready to serve.
Sometimes, if I’m lazy, I’ll had some potatoes (cut in quarters lengthwise) with all the other vegetables, and then I don’t have to make a potato side dish.
haifagirlParticipantI can’t imagine living anywhere else.
The easy way to get rid of all your stuff is to think about what you would need if C”V the Nazis were after you and you had to leave with only what you could carry. It’s a good way to find out what is really important to you.
haifagirlParticipantI’m much more interested in how he drives than in what he drives.
haifagirlParticipantMaybe this is a message that y’all should come here?
haifagirlParticipantWhat’s wrong with blue?
haifagirlParticipant1) My bashert
2) Bibi Netanyahu
haifagirlParticipantI have neither.
haifagirlParticipantphillybubby:
To Mod-80
What air conditioning?
mod-80:
see my post above wherein i shamefacedly admit my ignorance.
dont rub it in.
If I’m not mistaken, the seminary down the block from me (Seminar Bais Yaakov) has air conditioning. At least, they do in the room where I saw a video last year.
haifagirlParticipantIf I was ever the one who offended you I apologize.
haifagirlParticipantWhere in Israel?
haifagirlParticipantBTW, I did tell her that she could go to the library and use the computers there for free.
(I hope you’re all sitting.)
She said going to the library is assur.
As I sit here I’m wondering if I should tell all the frum people that we are all doing an aveirah! (Two, actually. Going to the library AND using the internet.)
haifagirlParticipantIn Manhattan they are walking on an isle. The rest of us walk down an aisle.
haifagirlParticipantLeftover cholent!
haifagirlParticipantI have as much right to get an invitation as anyone else in the office.
I’m really sorry you are feeling bad about this, but nobody has a right to be invited to a simcha.
haifagirlParticipantSo many foods, so little time.
Among my favorites:
tuna salad on hand matzah
tuna salad on rice cakes
tuna salad on whole wheat pita
tuna salad plain
any kind of meat wrapped in dough
any kind of meat made into egg rolls
Burger Buddy from Ken’s Diner!
haifagirlParticipantI’m also a fan of Madeline Kahn. 🙂
haifagirlParticipantI know of someone who lit for her husband’s kids and the kids got quite angry since their mother already was lighting for them. That marriage didn’t last very long, but I can’t say whether that’s the reason. 🙂
