Do you have space a bit higher up for extra shelves?
haifagirlParticipantModerators. The people who the posts and either approve or delete them.
haifagirlParticipantFirst of all, try stuff by the Three Tenors. I haven’t had time lately to look into this more thoroughly.
haifagirlParticipantI used to have a student whose father was an FBI agent. He was kind of creepy.
haifagirlParticipantAdore –
Re-read the post. What he said is No (comma), (I’M) planning on it either way.
And yet again we see why good grammar is important. When you aren’t used to reading good grammar, when you see it you get all confused.
haifagirlParticipantI get the impression that haifagirl mastered 1 thing in this world, and is flaunting it, as apparent by her constant nit picking and corrections.
that being said i really dont care at all i mean i just find it a pain to conatantly be grammatically correct especially when posting on sites like yw where no one knows proper grammar anyway…soliekyea
Simple. She wears a wig. The sefer condemns women wearing wigs and advocates that women cover their hair with a techil or the sort. However, she feels she cannot give up her wig.
I interpreted your post to mean:
I wear a wig and I can’t imagine covering my hair with anything other than a wig.
In other words, I said exactly what you said. Since we both said the same thing, why the argumentative tone?
The moral if story is YOU need to spend more time blogging and texting in order to understand people:)
Physician, heal thyself.
It is important to use accurate grammar, spelling and punctuation even on a blog. It improves the message that you are trying to express and makes it far more understandable for the reader. Also, if you don’t bother using proper English when blogging, it can carry over to your daily writing and one can become sloppy. If most of your writing is on blogs, it is even more important. If some of the posters here who make terrible errors in syntax were to send a letter of application to me, it would end up in the “circular file”. These people may have the best of qualifications, but many employers would not see beyond the misuse of the English language. It may not be important if you are applying to drive a bulldozer, but it is incredibly important if you want any type of office or business position. And when blogging, you should always take an extra second to check for spelling errors or typos, before pressing the “send” button.
Right on! (And write on.) 🙂
haifagirlParticipantGrammer is importent in real life but on a blog why bother?
1) Please forgive me, I thought this was real life and not some fantasy.
2) Don’t your fellow members of the CR deserve enough respect to try and communicate with us properly?
haifagirlParticipantMy grammar is very good she baked me oatmeal raisin cookies.
Tsk, tsk. That’s a run-on sentence. But I hope the cookies were good.
haifagirlParticipantI’m an English teacher. Surprise!
haifagirlParticipantWhat kind of game? An outdoor sport? A parlor game?
haifagirlParticipantThere used to be a commercial on the radio for a language school that taught English to native English speakers. It went something like this:
You are judged by the way you speak. Do people see you as a professional?
That’s true. How do you want to be perceived?
haifagirlParticipantWhy settle for just Orthodox? Can’t you make the commitment for Ultra Ortho? And once you’ve aced that, you can strive for Toldos / Meah Shearim English!
(sorry, that was a carry over from the oxymoron thread)
No apology necessary. That gave me a good chuckle for the morning.
August 16, 2011 5:20 am at 5:20 am in reply to: How do you know you're in school for the right profession? #797958haifagirlParticipantSo interesting you should bring this up. I recently read an article by Marty Nemko (all his stuff is worth reading) called “A Blueprint for Reinventing Education.” It’s available online.
Please allow me to quote a couple sentences.
“200,000 students each year who graduated in the bottom 40% of their high school class go to so-called four-year colleges. Of those, 3/4 of never graduate, even if given 8 1/2 years! “
“A new report in the Chronicle of Higher Education, The Great College Scam, indicates that 60 percent of the increased number of college graduates from 1992 to 2008 work on jobs requiring just high school!”
“Not only do most of those students not graduate, learn little, and be no more employable than if they hadn’t gone to college, they incurred huge student debt, and suffered the boredom and ongoing assault to self-esteem that comes from being forced to spend years studying academic material for which they are unprepared.”
haifagirlParticipantyeah haifagirl calm down this is a forum not an entrance exam. You understood exactly what (s)he was saying and so did everyone else.
Sorry. I speak Orthodox English. I don’t go in for any of that Conservative or Reform English.
haifagirlParticipantAm I paranoid, or do I have a valid point. It seems to me that whenever I am on line at a local grocery store or bank or post office, the people behind the counter are speaking a different language. Are they talking about me ?? , if not then why not speak english ?? I have heard so far, Russian,Spanish,Hungarian,
and recently Portuguese !!! I think since we live here in America we can all talk english.
Thanks.
Wow! Such creative punctuation.
haifagirlParticipantIf by running you could get to where you are going in 3 minutes, and by walking it will take you 10, you are better off running. The extra amount of rain that will fall on you in those 3 minutes is less than the rain that will fall on you in the extra 7 minutes of walking.
haifagirlParticipantI guess maybe i can convince myself that some non-jews have an interest in this site.
And what a kiddush Hashem it would be if those non-Jews could say, “Wow! Those religious Jews really write well. They don’t have typos, and they use perfect grammar.”
haifagirlParticipantI once read that you get less let walking because you are standing straight, as opposed to running, in which you will have more surface area exposed. However, if you run, you may get to where you going and get out of the rain faster.
haifagirlParticipantHealth: You couldn’t have stated it any more perfectly. Great job!
haifagirlParticipantanon1m0us:
“According to that logic, one really does not need to give Tzedaka or feel bad for Kollel people because as you pointed out “Hashem will help them”.”
Are you serious? We say Hashem will help the poor – does this mean that we never give any tzeddakah?! According to your logic, we should never have to help anybody – after all, doesn’t Hashem help everyone?
But obviously despite the fact that Hashem is indeed the One who is truly helping everybody, He wants us to help others too.
anon1m0us: You forgot to use your sarcasm font. mw13 took you seriously. Watch that next time. 😉
haifagirlParticipantHaifa girl; you’re unfortunately not all that proficient at punctuation. If you really enjoy it and want to learn how to punctuate correctly I would suggest the book ‘Eats, Shoots, and Leaves’. It may help you hone your skills.
Please point out my mistakes. I’m always happy to learn. And by the way, I use the American standard of punctuation (period inside the quotation mark), not the British version. I suggest you reread the book as she does mention American standards differ from those in the U.K.
And what’s with the semicolon after my name?
haifagirlParticipant“it” is a typo that should have read “is”. “eat” was a typo that I intended to delete before submitting. “excersize” is a misspelling that you surely understood the meaning of. Replace the commas with semicolons if that makes it easier to read. And note that it is a reply to the comment immediately preceding it, namely the posters point about “because everyone else is”.
Thank you. Now I understand. Following is your original, with translation into English. Please note the correct forms of verbs and the correct punctuation.
There’s nothing wrong to sit and learn because everyone else is, there’s nothing wrong to work because everyone else it, and there’s nothing wrong to eat excersize because everyone else is.
There’s nothing wrong with sitting and learning “because everyone else is.” There’s nothing wrong with working “because everyone else is.” And there’s nothing wrong with exercising “because everyone else is.”
haifagirlParticipantWhats the deal with these Oh Yeah! bumper stickers and ads? Anyone know what its referring to?
Care to buy an apostrophe? (Or two?)
haifagirlParticipantMods: Could you please correct the spelling error in the title?
Thanks.
Done. Added apostrofey.
Cute.
Let’s try again. I said spelling error, not punctuation error. And I’m really sure you’re joking about the spelling of apostrophe.
Dow Jones “Coincidence”?!
Please tell me you don’t think Dow Jones gets an apostrofey
haifagirlParticipantMods: Could you please correct the spelling error in the title?
Thanks.
Done. Added apostrofey.
haifagirlParticipantI don’t understand ur problem haifagirl is it bc Nd (bt it probably is and, and the a is next to shift
There is so much more than just “Nd.” Try proofreading.
haifagirlParticipantThere’s nothing wrong to sit and learn because everyone else is, there’s nothing wrong to work because everyone else it, and there’s nothing wrong to eat excersize because everyone else is.
I can usually translate the most awful gibberish into English. Not this time. Please explain.
haifagirlParticipantThanks for remembering 🙂 I listened to 3 of them so far…there’s no words…it was driving me insane
You didn’t say you needed words. That’s bit tougher. Give me a couple days.
haifagirlParticipantjust like nobody new in advance how Obama would turn out.
Assuming you mean nobody knew, I would have to disagree. Some of us did and left the country.
haifagirlParticipantThis thread makes me sad. I hate to have to focus on chestoinois. So instead of talking about where it apears more Nd in which circles, everyone just try To take this to heart nd if Ur someone who does that stop it! Nd enforce it with Ur children.:) Nd u never know who will set what u did it can make the biggest kiddush Hashem, most non Jews when they take something off the shelves they don’t go to put it bck, but we are a nation raised above everyone else. Verrumantanu mekol haleshoins. A non Jew can see u do that Nd say wow Jews are amazing! Also for a Jew to see they might b inspired to act in the same way. We can take this thread to a whole new level.!!!:)

haifagirlParticipantRecently I was at a museum and saw a woman climb over the rope to put her toddler son in an exhibit so she could take his picture. I told her it was a chillul Hashem. She looked at me as if I were from Mars.
You should know, it was Chol Hamoed, the museums are free and crowded, and most of the people there are not frum. That lady was.
haifagirlParticipantIf you read what I quoted from jmj613’s post, he called the person who claims he doesn’t take out the garbage a lier. That means the person is in bed, on a recliner, waiting in ambush, or something else similar.
He didn’t call him a liar.
haifagirlParticipantif a guy tells me hes not hes a lier
Wow! I’ve never seen anybody taking out the garbage while reclining. Neat trick!
haifagirlParticipantHere, here! I second that!
Hear, hear! So do I.
haifagirlParticipantWhat’s a casio? An instrument?
Casio is a brand name of an electronic keyboard.
haifagirlParticipantRemind me after Tisha B’Av and I’ll recommend some loud, “beaty” music.
You forgot to remind me. Luckily I remembered on my own. These might not all be to your taste, but give them a try. In no particular order:
Radetzky March – Strauss (Stay away from the Karajan version.)
Ruslan and Lyudmila Overture – Glinka
Tritsch Tratsch Polka – Strauss
Hungarian Dance #5 – Brahms
Russian Dance (Trepak) from The Nutcracker – Tchaikovsky
Die Fledermaus Overture – Strauss
Polonaise from Eugene Onegin – Tchaikovsky
Entry of the Gladiators (also known as Thunder and Blazes) – Fucik
Candide Overture – Bernstein
Sabre Dance – Khachaturian
Les Toreadors from Carmen Suite #1
Bugler’s Holiday – Anderson
The Typewriter – Anderson
War March of the Priests from Athalia – Mendelssohn
Mars: Bringer of War from The Planets – Holst
Jupiter: Bringer of Jollity from The Planets – Holst
Hungarian Rhapsody #2 – Liszt
Nearly anything by Sousa
Oh, and here’s a squeaky clean rap: Fear the Boom and Bust
haifagirlParticipantMy rabbi takes out the garbage at his house. But so do the kids.
haifagirlParticipantstop baiting haifagirl…
Good advice.
remember there’s 8 notes in an octave, not 7 ?
There are (or, if you prefer, there’re) 8 notes in an octave.
haifagirlParticipantthanks everyone for the advice. I am in my early twenties.
I realize this is painful for you, but give me a break. How many years have you been dating? If you are in your early twenties, I started dating before you were born. I know other people who have been dating nearly as long.
There are still plenty of available men who want someone your age. Stop complaining.
haifagirlParticipantRegular posters, I think.
haifagirlParticipantI usually don’t feel old, but it is a bit disconcerting when people in their 20s complain about being old.
haifagirlParticipantA couple people figured out who I am. I was really surprised by people who didn’t.
haifagirlParticipantThere are other instruments without notes, as well, I think tuba.
I think you mean trombone. Unless, of course, you are referring to the fact that valved instruments can create more than one note with each combination of valves.
August 11, 2011 4:07 am at 4:07 am in reply to: What would you like to be when you grow up? #1045032haifagirlParticipantWhy not find a guy that is nice, kind, maybe not so handsome,
or settle in some other way, and marry him, (if you are considering whatever else u said) if u want it that bad why not settle a little. As long as he’s a good guy, what else do u need?
Fine. Not a problem. Find someone. There aren’t so many single guys out there. And of the ones who are, most don’t want me. In general I don’t say no to a shidduch, but the men do.
But you yourself should say no. Being a single parent is no picnic
Spoken by someone who isn’t childless. And you should never know what that’s like.
haifagirlParticipantOn the side point, I think it is pretty clear in the shidduch world that the girls need to be more appreciative when they have a date than vice versa, considering the guys are getting a lot more requests for dates than the girls. Which is another reason it works out better for her to travel to him. She has less dates thus has less times she would need to travel. If he would need to travel for many of his dates (and he has many more than her), it would be a lot more expensive.
Not to mention she has fewer dates and thus has fewer times she would need to travel. And speaking of dates, he has many more the she.
August 10, 2011 8:18 pm at 8:18 pm in reply to: What would you like to be when you grow up? #1045018haifagirlParticipanthaifa what do you mean with a rabbi who lets u be a mommy by urself?
I’m not prepared to do that without a written psak. My rabbi won’t say no, but he won’t say yes, either.
haifagirlParticipantI was working, so it wasn’t until I got home after 10 p.m. that I could finally turn on WFMT. Ah!
haifagirlParticipantAnother tip: Give choices.
Examples:
Do you want to pick up your toys before you put on your pajamas or after?
Do you want to put your toys away or do you want me to give them to a gemach? (And you have to follow through on that.)
haifagirlParticipantSummer camp is much more intensive than our regular, yearly program.
And I wasn’t offended, except by the whoever thinks “English” doesn’t need to be capitalized. 😉

Find me:
a) my zivug
b) a rabbi who will let me be a mommy by myself
