April 4, 2012 7:22 pm at 7:22 pm in reply to: Why dont high school girls no how to spell and right ? #866154haifagirlParticipant
For the humor-challenged among us, it was obvious that the Goq was making a point with the title of this thread. However . . .
Every time we have a seminary thread here the soon to be high school graduates seem to lack basic spelling and writing skills why is this?
It seems the Goq could use some help with punctuation.
haifagirlParticipantSome of these are really good tips. Some, for example, the crying baby, are just hoaxes.
Don’t people know to check with snopes.com before forwarding stuff?
haifagirlParticipantREALIST, I am guessing you are young.
In the olden days, when I was young, the first world referred to the U.S. and other western democracies.
The second world referred to the U.S.S.R. and other developed communist countries.
The third world was all the undeveloped countries.
haifagirlParticipantI’m not sure what you mean by “I don’t have Hebrew on my keyboard.”
Does that mean you haven’t installed Hebrew or that you don’t have the letters on the physical keys?
If it’s the first case, just install the Hebrew. If it’s the second, type out a chart of where the letters are on the keys.
haifagirlParticipantHold the pickles, hold the lettuce,
Special orders don’t upset us
Have it your way (2X)
At McDonalds.
Hold the pickles, hold the lettuce, etc. was Burger King.
Yes, it was Burger King, and there’s something missing:
Hold the pickles, hold the lettuce,
Special orders don’t upset us,
All we ask is that you let us
Serve it your way.
Have it your way, have it your way,
Have it your way at Burger King.
haifagirlParticipantI remember a woman I went to school with who told me about the birth of her youngest child. She had had several children prior. She never had any complications with any pregnancy or childbirth. The pregnancy with the youngest was also quite uneventful. She was as low-risk as a person could be.
There was a complication at birth. I don’t remember what the complication was, however, had she not been in a hospital she wouldn’t have made it there in time. Both she and the baby would have died.
Better to be safe than sorry.

haifagirlParticipantNow, the other question is: Colorized or Black and White version?
Somebody colorized it? For shame!
haifagirlParticipantWhy do people call a kipa sruga a “knitted yarmulke?” It’s done by crochet! One hook only. Knitting uses a minimum of 2 needles. Sheesh!
Maybe they are native Hebrew speakers. The Hebrew phrase for crochet literally means “knitting with one needle.”
“Parve milk” – that’s like “military intelligence” (shades of the 60’s?) or “jumbo shrimp” (oops – a non-kosher example!!!) What’s the expression they call this type of juxtaposition?
Oxymoron.
“ATM machine” – there’s a word for this when you say the word that one of the initials stands for but I can’t remember this one, either.
Redundancy.
haifagirlParticipant“I started the thread to be funny”
PBA, I was laughing the whole way through 🙂
So was I.
In all seriousness, though, there are rabbis who hold you should not give blood indiscriminately, but wait until there is a specific need in the community.
In other words, before you give blood, ask your LOR.
haifagirlParticipantCheerios certainly has less sugar (not “no sugar”) than other cereals, but that doesn’t make it healthy.

March 11, 2012 10:58 am at 10:58 am in reply to: So, what was the best Shlach Monos you got?! #858767haifagirlParticipantI think that the last comma in that sentence is superfluous. 🙂
You’re absolutely right. Thank you. I was going to write “really, really appreciated” but forgot the second “really.”
haifagirlParticipantGoogle “suppress sneeze” (without the quotes) and you will get a lot of information. Not all of it is accurate, of course, but much is.
haifagirlParticipantThere was no “best,” but there were excellent parts of several.
A local rebbetzin gave me a small challah and a can of tuna spread, among other things. That was the first one I got in the morning, and I hadn’t yet eaten, and had no food at home, so that was really, appreciated.
A friend gave me three mini potato kugels which were very good and my next-door neighbor gave me some unbelievably good cookies.
haifagirlParticipantI’d rather have a loud sneeze than a burst blood vessel.
haifagirlParticipantNever, ever suppress a sneeze. You can do damage to yourself.
haifagirlParticipant“aprehend” is what they do to suspects.
Spelled wrong. However:
? ?[ap-ri-hend]
verb (used with object)
1. to take into custody; arrest by legal warrant or authority: The police apprehended the burglars.
2. to grasp the meaning of; understand, especially intuitively; perceive.
3. to expect with anxiety, suspicion, or fear; anticipate: apprehending violence.
Try a dictionary before “correcting” someone.
haifagirlParticipantHaifagirl: Please read the thread Shidduch Segula – one I have not seen before.
As I mentioned in another thread, I did it last year.
If you want, please fax me your name to be mispallel for you and others you might know, for anything needed, at the Shotzer Rebbe Z’TL kever on Friday, Shushan Purim.
Probably too late at this point to get you my name, but somebody davened there for me once before.
May H’KBH grant you all your tefillot le tova always! Amen!
Thank you.
Wow, it really bothers you THAT much?
Yes.
haifagirlParticipantI never used a different name. I just couldn’t stand trying to decipher all the cryptic posts. I have another place in cyberspace where I also hang out. Since over there the people rarely have typos and almost never have grammatical errors, that’s where I choose to spend the bulk of my online time.
haifagirlParticipantand finds the scene a bit disorientating
He actually found the scene a bit disorienting.
haifagirlParticipantgo on a Jewish dating sight.
Thank you. I never thought of that.
haifagirlParticipantI said all of sefer Tehillim last year on Purim night. It took me about six hours. I’m still single.
haifagirlParticipantVermont
haifagirlParticipantAre you suggesting that those who use English as a second language (ESL) or never learnt English first-hand or are from non-English speaking countries or from non-English speaking homes be banned from commenting on YWN?
No, I’m not suggesting that. I’m suggesting they use a spelling checker or Google translate, or [gasp] a dictionary!
haifagirlParticipantHey! I’ve got a thread named after me. Cool! Now I just have to read it.
August 21, 2011 2:55 pm at 2:55 pm in reply to: Kohanim not being able to go to exhibits with real dead people. #800203haifagirlParticipantI dont know who here besides me goes to museums, but the Museum of Natural History and The Metropolitan Museum of Art in NY, The Franklin Institute in Philly and the British Museum in in London are truly fascinating .
I love museums.
haifagirlParticipantMods:
Can we please start enforcing the rules of the CR? I specifically mean this one:
5 – Please try to post in a language somewhat resembling English. Visit spellcheck.net if you need help. Mozilla Firefox browser also offers a spellcheck option. If your comment is not written in normal English, it will not be approved.
[emphasis added]
haifagirlParticipantdo you understand how annoying un-asked for help is. how about dis-asked for. ya i made upa word. it means when you are driving the whole CR crazy and you are repeatedly asked to stop but continue to add punctuation where no-one wants or cares for it. get off your high horse.
You are 100% right. It is annoying.
Now, do you know how annoying it is for many of us to try and read things that are totally ungrammatical and misspelled? It is especially annoying given there is a written rule about it:
5 – Please try to post in a language somewhat resembling English. Visit spellcheck.net if you need help. Mozilla Firefox browser also offers a spellcheck option. If your comment is not written in normal English, it will not be approved.
Have you ever bothered to read the rules of the CR?
haifagirlParticipantmods- no more grammar police please.
If you are driving over the speed limit and you get a ticket, whose fault is it, yours or the police officer’s?
There’s one certain way to stop the grammar police.
haifagirlParticipantwe can decipher posts our own
Why should people have to “decipher” posts?
From dictionary.com:
decipher
1. to make out the meaning of (poor or partially obliterated writing, etc.): to decipher a hastily scribbled note.
2. to discover the meaning of (anything obscure or difficult to trace or understand): to decipher hieroglyphics.
3. to interpret by the use of a key, as something written in cipher: to decipher a secret message.
4. Obsolete . to depict; portray.
Haven’t you ever learned that you are supposed to make things easier for the next person, not harder?
August 20, 2011 6:55 pm at 6:55 pm in reply to: disproportion, misconception, and utter craziness #800076haifagirlParticipantAn assault is a threat of any kind. Physical contact would be battery. If someone threatens you and hits you, that’s assault and battery.
haifagirlParticipantThe husbands minhagim become her minhagim,
I know a couple – sefardi woman, ashkenazi man. She always said a bracha before bentching licht. Her husband wanted her to reverse that. So he asked his Rosh Yeshiva. He was told al pi halacha, he’s right, but al pi shalom bayis let her light however she wants.
haifagirlParticipantWhoever is on duty right now doesn’t seem to like me. He (she?) is approving post that came in after mine.
Don’t make me go into the mods’ lounge and do something nasty.
August 19, 2011 7:47 am at 7:47 am in reply to: disproportion, misconception, and utter craziness #800074haifagirlParticipantthis guy would have been very capable of assaulting Yossi.
He did assault him.
he started yelling at me to get away from him and threatening me if i didn’t
What else would you call that?
haifagirlParticipantTo have a good time, I go to work. I love my job. I sometimes hang out there even when I have finished teaching for the day. I’ll even clean out the cabinets just to find an excuse to be there.
haifagirlParticipantis marring hard ?
It depends on what you want to mar, and how badly you want to damage the item.
i m marring in 1and half month to i have why to be nerves my kalah lives in another city so its new pepole new family and house evrything is diffrent is it normal to be a litle bit nerves ?
Oh! You meant marrying.
Or, in other words:
I am marrying in one and a half months, so I have a reason to be nervous. My kalah lives in another city, so it’s new people, new family and house. Everything is different. Is it normal to be a little bit nervous?
Yes, it’s normal. The most important thing in a marriage is communication. So I would suggest working on improving that skill.
Mazel tov!
haifagirlParticipantno lead pencils only regular ones with sharpeners
And I thought I was old. I remember lead pencils back in the early 60s, and some of the ones we had at home from from the 50s.
haifagirlParticipantI really don’t know what goes on during color but that part about using talents and promoting achdus sounds good. Why can’t that be done without trauma? Can’t someone just say, “You’re on team 1 and you’re on team A and let’s start”?
haifagirlParticipantI never had the privilege of going to camp, or to a frum school, so I never experienced color war. First of all, I don’t get it at all. Second of all, I don’t understand why whatever this thing is it needs to be started by traumatizing people. Perhaps someone can explain it to me.
haifagirlParticipantHaLeiVi: That’s a good catch. In fact, here are some more rules that are frequently broken.
Topic and tone
1 – All posts must be kept on topic.
2 – If your post was deleted, please don’t post asking us why your post was deleted. It was deleted because we felt that there was something inappropriate, off topic etc. Do not resubmit deleted posts.
3 – Do not use excessive CAPS.
4 – Before starting a new topic do a quick check to see if the topic exists.
5 – Please try to post in a language somewhat resembling English. Visit spellcheck.net if you need help. Mozilla Firefox browser also offers a spellcheck option. If your comment is not written in normal English, it will not be approved.
6 – Yeshiva World encourages people to start new threads. Please make sure to put that thread in the correct section of the coffee room. If you think that we should add a section , please email one of the moderators.
haifagirlParticipantWhat is a “patrol groan?” 🙂
That’s the noise we make whenever we find out we’ve been assigned to the YWN CR again. 😉
(On the other hand, we reach our quota of tickets quickly.)
haifagirlParticipanttwo guys of a certain european ethnic group
Some of us just call them Densans.
haifagirlParticipantHere’s one that’s frequently ignored: Don’t use an apostrophe to make a plural. 🙂
haifagirlParticipanthaifagirl, don’t you go crazy trying to teach English in Israel? I guess it can’t be any worse than the CR
I recently wrote a sentence on the board that one of my friends had posted as her FB status. My Israeli teenage students knew right away that it was wrong and why.
I wouldn’t even attempt to test them with the stuff I see here. Although, now that I think about it, it might be fun.
haifagirlParticipantThank you. I guess I didn’t proofread so carefully this time. I apologize.
haifagirlParticipantThere are 10 types of people in the world: Those who think this joke is old and those who still don’t get it.
haifagirlParticipantMinyan gal: That is a wonderful article. Thank you so much for sharing it. It was quite long, so I’m afraid some people here may not have read the whole thing, so I want to stress one paragraph:
“As important as your words are in shaping your behaviour, they are even more important in the way they shape the behaviour of others,” Heehler writes. “Your manner of speaking is, if nothing else, the central factor upon which people form assumptions about you. Whatever your ultimate goal in life, chances are good you’re going to have to communicate your way to it.”
haifagirlParticipantExactly in other words its not that hard to understand so again what’s your problem
Read the OP again. I understood what she meant. You understood what she meant. But, as I said before, my Rav didn’t. He’s an extremely intelligent man with a very good grasp of grammar (I was his secretary for many years). If he didn’t understand it, I’m sure he’s not the only one. Does LuVmyFaM really want people to think she is grappling with the issue of wearing a wig vs. not covering her hair?
haifagirlParticipantQuestion for the mods:
Here is one of the rules of the CR:
3 – We generally can not post links to other websites.
But I have seen that many posts do go through with links. So, what is the criteria?
