Curiosity, is a hat covering hair not tashmishei kedusha since it serves a mitzvah of covering hair (and worn specifically for that purpose)?
gornitMemberOn the non-kosher cruises the minyan is usually after the daf yomi shiyur, not.
gornitMember147, apparently the talis koton is not “meyuchas l’tefila” since it is worn all day, but my hat (or a gartel or kittel) is more choshuv because it is only worn for tfilah. Makes me wonder, if a person wears special shoes for tefilah, do they become like a gartel or kittel!?!
January 10, 2013 3:51 am at 3:51 am in reply to: Shoshana – who was first named Shoshana? Any famous people named Shoahana? #918997gornitMemberSorry, should be “Yaakov’s son Levi” – kind of like Back to the Future.
gornitMemberKovodHabriyos, my LOR says P.C.’s gotta be male, as the poskin say, because women aren’t part of minyan, but then he told me something wild and strange:
The Chasam Sofer on Kesubos 7b D”H B’makhelos says: a woman, slave or minor children are also valid P.C.’s!!!!!! In fact, the K’hilas Yaakov on Kesubos (Likutim) s. 1 writes that if P.C. is to add simcha to chosson and kalah, then a minor child qualifies!!!
But my LOR made clear that the poskin do not follow these views.
gornitMemberI asked my LOR if P.C. is plural why not require 2 P.C.’s? He answered (are you sitting down?):
Although most poskin say one is enogh, indeed some hold you need TWO P.C.”s (told me Tshuvas Avrohom ben HaRambam s. 86 & s. 100 in name of his father the Rambam holds this)!
Then he told me something weirder: In Tshuvas Ma’ri Halevi (brother of Turei Zohov) s. 37 says that tow P.C.’s are enough only if the two P.C.’s are very choshov [like R’ kavevsky and R’ Shtienman], but if the P.C. are regular people – TEN are required!!
To me, that is kind of “interesting”.
gornitMemberI just thought of a REALLY stupid question: The words “ponim chadoshos” (new faces)is PLURAL, so why aren’t TWO p.c.’s required?????
gornitMemberMy shul hat is like a gartel – LOLOLOL!!! Here’s the problem – if I can’t wear it to the bathroom, what do I do when I go to the washroom, since that is the hair covering (instead of a sheitel or head shmatte)???? Do I wear the hat or uncover my hair???
gornitMemberI heard my LOR tell a bochur to say the segulah fpr finding lost object and he will find his shidduch (“Omar Rabi Binyomin hakol sumin etc.”) because chazal tells us that the man seeks his “lost object” – his missing rib. I thought it was hysterical till a few weeks later this bochur was engaged!

gornitMemberCuriosity, I noticed you called me arrogant, you also called the OP a troll. Name calling is a form of bullying. It is infantile and symptomatic of underlying issues. Leading me to suspect that the real issue is with the one wearing the yarmulka.
gornitMemberI suppose if you wanted to, you could wear an orange suit and white shoes but don’t be surprised if others thought that you are “interesting”.
gornitMemberAh langeh Shemone esrei is when the bocher gets married in his twenties. Someone joked that is the reason in Yeshiva they make a hoyche kedusha for mincha, to teach bochurim to keep the Shemone esrei short
gornitMemberEliyahu Hanavi is going to appear riding on a donkey? I thought it be moshiach (rashi in chumish “HaChamor” – same one as Avrohom’s, Moshe’s and Moshiach.
gornitMemberThe cheapest and nicest mishloach manos is when it is done b’shutfas – several friends (I try to get 10 of us) who have mutual recepients, all chip in a couple of dollars each and put together a $20 shlach monos “from all of us”. I think this spirit of achdus in giving is part of what S.M. is all about!
gornitMemberI think it depends on the situation and the context. If a bochur in Brisk or the Mirr or Stamar walks in with a knitted kipah, he is making a statement. calling for attention, rebelling or crying for help (he may also be suffering from mental health problems. I compare this to a BY girl who suddenly streaks her hair pink and purple.
On the other hand, some yidden should be applauded for wearing ANY yarmuka at all.
So really it depends who is under the kipah to know if the hat fits.
January 8, 2013 2:08 am at 2:08 am in reply to: Women's Aseifa at the Palace, can someone summarize please. #917932gornitMemberRecently, an Israeli start-up company has begun marketing and selling special glasses in charedi neighborhoods such as Meah Shearim. The purpose of the glasses is to prevent charedi men from seeing immodestly-dressed women.
Yedioth Ahronot reports that the glasses, designed for the charedi community, are intended for charedi men who must go to places where women will be present.
The new patent cost the inventors only NIS 25. The patent includes non-prescription glasses and the obscuring stickers.
gornitMemberI hate trolls! However from shmendrecks posts I learned things I never knew. His topics were weird yet interesting. Certainly the posts were outside the box. In a trollish way, he made me think. At times I agreed or disagrede, at times I accepted or mocked, but usually I was forced to think and I when I left the coffee room, I was a little wiser. Yehi Zichro Boruch.
gornitMemberEven a regular employee who does “mundane” work is mandated in mishna-halacha to shorten his/her davening and curtail his/her bentching to avoid “stealing” time from the employer, kal v’chomer when the employee is in kli kodesh – teaching Jewish or secular subjects (which is also a mitzvah) to multiple “employers”/students.
However, if the recess is so short that she is unable to get to the teacher’s room (which I am a bit skeptical about but accept at face value), then I assume the recess is way too short for the students too, and this ought to be raised with the school’s menahel/ess.
