    Joseph,

Would it be considered the minhag hamakom if the men at a certain shul all wore hats and jackets? Or are they simply choosing to do so?

    DaasYochid,

Would you say a man wearing a hat and jacket in a place where they don’t typically wear those items is wrong?

He is not conforming to minhag hamakon in such a case either.

Usually clothing is a very good prevention method for tick bites.

You should be aware though that bugs may attach to one’s clothing and be carried into the home only to bite later.

    Check out CDC website.

    Prepare.

Go to a minyan regularly for several days before and tell the gabbai you have a yahrzeit coming up.

Do research on where you would like to send tzedakah and just write and mail the check on the day of your liking.

Sleep well for several days before so you can utilize each hour of the day properly.

85%+ of medical diagnoses are made via proper history taking. A physician needs to form a trusting relationship with a patient in order to obtain a comprehensive history. A patient will not divulge all details to a doctor they deem even potentially untrustworthy. I would argue that forging that rapport would require a handshake on initial visit.

Pretty much only through mosquitoes, but also possible, though unlikely due to screening, through organ transplant (including blood transfusions).

Some white blood cells, specifically natural-killer cells, can target virally infected cells that have a major histocompatability complex displaying an epitope that the body deems to be non-self. An epitope is a small portion of protein that can be thought of as a cell’s ID card that shows what sort of stuff is being made inside that cell. Viruses inside the infected cell make proteins, which are cut up and displayed by the MHC-1 (which are found on all nucleated cells in the body). The NK cells recognized the viral epitope as foreign and secrete the cytokines necessary for that cell to undergo lysing.

Theoretically, if only a few cells were infected by the virus the immune system could clean it up by killing all those infected cells (This happens on a regular basis. Some cells are infected and killed by the immune system. Such a case would likely be considered subclinical, with no symptoms/evidence of being sick). However, someone that has fallen ill and has symptoms due to a virus likely has more that just a few cells infected, and would make it nearly impossible to eradicate all the virally infected cells.

The other viruses within the family of Flavivirus are considered ARBO-viruses, meaning they are ARthropod BOrne, transmitted by mosquitoes and other insects. Malaria, not a virus but a parasite, is also transmitted by insects. Not too many are common in the NY area, though.

There is antiviral therapy available, but their use is mainly for serious life-threatening viruses, like HIV or HepB. These drugs interfere with the virus’ mechanism of infection, whether it be through blocking reverse transcription (building DNA from RNA precursors) or inhibiting protease action.

Even our wonderful immune system cannot thwart off viral infection.

Some vaccines are preventative bacterial infections, such as diphtheria, pertussis, and hemophilus influenza.

Rebyidd23 is correct. “Antibiotics” within the medical community typically mean antibacterials.

    Antibacterials work against bacteria.

Antibiotics can also refer to antifungal or anti-mycobacterial (TB), but these are usually furthered specified as such.

Viruses are only preventable, through use of well tested and researched vaccines. Anything that your physician would give you (in the US and Canada) is a well researched and tested vaccine.

West Nile Virus is part of a family of viruses known as Flaviviruses, along with other known viruses such as Hepatits C, St Louis Virus and Yellow fever.

West Nile virus is transmitted by several species of mosquitoes. Most humans infected will only have minor, if any, symptoms.

More serious cases can cause symptoms of headaches, fever, muscle pains (this is not a full list of the symptoms).

Very rarely does is have extremely serious complications such as meningitis (inflammation of the brain coverings) or encephalitis (inflammation of the brain itself).

Serious infection is more common in immunocompromised people, like people with HIV or people on some sort of immunosuppressive therapy for a chronic disease, like cancer or Crohn’s disease. People with high blood pressure or type 2 diabetes are also at higher risk.

There is no vaccine against this infection. The best way to protect yourself is to wear insect repellant on days spent outdoors.

One can argue that animals that humans typically kill for food are not consciously aware beings. If someday we have empirical data to the contrary, that question would be quite appropriate.

    gavra,

So if our morality is not in line with what to Torah says, how would we resolve such a conflict?

Today, if it was not illegal in the country in which one lives, you would say that it’s perfectly okay to buy and sell humans(Vayikra 25:44-45)?

    You say morality evolves.

Do we not get our morals from the Torah? Isn’t the Torah true and perfect for all times?

About point 3, How do you know this was the case? Let’s say it was a step down?

About point 4, I believe that Kohanim have different responsibilities, not “more rights.”

Yes, and all the chokim as well, but that is a different story.

But more simply, how can the Torah condone give advice on “avdus?” (the word slavery has already been discredited as being to reminiscent of the antebellum South). It was never considered a chok, and therefore should be able to be comprehended by man (and woman).

    catch yourself,

Tynenol, generically called acetaminophen, acts by inhibiting the cyclooxegenase-2 (COX2) pathway within the body. Without this COX2, the body cannot synthesize the necessary arachidonic acid metabolites for inflammation. This inflammation, a humoral response by the body to fend off infection, is what causes headaches. So inhibition of the mediators of headaches prevents (or relieves) headaches.

    Now you know.
