    Miso soup, shmiso soup.

Everyone knows chicken soup is the most important of the 5 food groups necessary for sustaining good health.

    Especially Le’chavod Shabbos.

You can overdose by taking large quantities of Vitamin D.

Please speak to your MD before taking any vitamins, supplements or medications, even if you can buy them at your local supermarket with no prescription.

I know you say your doctor suggested you can’t take too much vitamin D.

I respectfully beg to differ and suggest people speak to their own doctor.

(Not to the nice lady behind the counter at your local health food place.)

Dovr, first of all- “lo am ha’aretz chassid.”

Second of all, a person doesn’t need TO BE a scholar, but if he’s not, and even if he in fact is, a person NEEDS a scholar- a Rav fluent in all areas of the Torah- to guide him and advise him.

Even a scholar, and most certainly the one who is not, cannot succeed in living a life of kedusha if that essential hadracha is lacking.

It’s interesting reading through some of these posts and watching people bend over backwards to be dan le’kaf ze’chus, when on other threads, discussing other members of Klal Yisrael, those same people are so quick to condemn and accuse others whose lifestyle choices offend them.

It’s that ancient shor she’nagach mixing in. Depends whose parah he’s goring…

Dovr, you want to do away with welfare?!

Do you have any idea how this country looked before there was welfare?

Have you ever gone to bed hungry? Really really hungry? And freezing cold?

If you want to do away with- or send off to work- young able bodied lazy good for nothings who are shamelessly taking advantage of the system and living off the benevolence of their hard-working peers, then I hear you.

But wanting to do away with welfare is a seriously bad idea. And not a very Jewish one either.

May we all be zoche to be from the givers and not from the takers. And may we all receive our sustenance directly from the benevolent hand of the One who is zan u’mefarness la’kol.

It’s easy to point the finger of blame at our Mosdos and walk away feeling self-righteous.

In reality they’re dealing with some really tough questions.

As DaMoshe points out, we are dealing with dinei nefashos.

Our schools are responsible both for the nefashos already within their walls, and for those on the outside who wish to enter. How do you decide who takes precedence? When you’re dealing with impressionable young girls growing up in an immoral society, the consequences of a bad decision can be truly frightening. How do you know who will influence whom? How far do you go to protect your student body from seeing or hearing about things you’re trying to shelter them from? And if by sheltering them you keep another Nefesh Yehudis out of the walls of your mossad- you have achrayus for the possible (should I say probable?) destruction of that soul.

Not simple. And not just a question of dollars and cents.

Anyone who ever had a thought that being a Mod is a cakewalk, should stumble onto this thread. Like I just did.

    The problem is obvious:

They both want to have the last word. And will no way allow the other guy to have the last word.

I humbly offer the Mods a possible solution:

Close the thread after you post this post. Since it’s impossible to satisfy both parties by giving them both the last word, your best bet might just be giving neither of them the last word.

    You’re welcome.

I can’t answer your questions, but I can tell you that my own experience was very similar to yours.

I was told a few years ago that I had a crack in a tooth. Dentist wanted to remove, replace tooth. This involved major dental proceedings over several visits. I was not eager to got through all that for a tooth that gave me no trouble.

Tooth still doing its job without any dental procedures, including several rounds of shmurah matza and honey-dipped apples.

Of course there’s a possibility frumguy and I have just had spectacular mazel with our teeth…

    Strongly disagree, Health.

I walked on a country road in the recent past.

It was necessary to do so in order to reach the home I was staying at.

Are you suggesting, Health, that I was oiver a lahv by walking home? Or by staying in a home located on a country road? Are you suggesting that I was supposed to approach this home only in a vehicle and not on foot?

Would you consider driving a vehicle on a dark, twisting, sloping road safer than traversing it by foot? Are you suggesting that it is only muttar to stay on urban roads? Statistically are there less traffic accidents causing bodily injury on city roads than on country roads?

I’m finding the discussion regarding the source of our obligation to take care of our bodies very interesting.

I’m finding Health’s comment disturbing in light of recent tragic events. In addition to being uncalled for, his conclusion is incorrect.

With all due respect to the OP, Canada is not the solution.

It’s interesting following some of the posters trying to muster up support for their favored candidate (though I think gifting Mrs C with “a true grasp of national and world affairs” borders on the grotesque). As for me- they both sicken me to the core.

For a long time many of us (myself included) thought we could make a go of it in the Galus of the Goldeneh Medinah. With our voting rights and our free speech in the land of democracy and apple pie, things didn’t look so bad…

Much as it hurts me to express any appreciation to either of these two vile candidates, I feel I have to offer some Hakaras Hatov to both of them (while simultaneously holding my nose and trying not to gag).

They have done us a favor by showing us just how low a human being devoid of morals can sink, and for proving that the only logical solution is to daven hard to be redeemed from this long and painful Galus.

    Person1- WHAT?

Whether we are a married couple settling disagreements, an indidvidual driving to the mall, a couple disciplining their child, a couple getting a divorce, a couple going out to dinner, a woman buying a dress, a young man going on vacation with his friends, a young lady talking on the phone to her classmate, an individual walking into the bank, or a thirsty individual looking to buy a drink on a summer day-

We always aspire to involve the Shulchan Aruch.

What exactly does “Shivisi…” mean to you?

Do I ever do anything impulsively, distractedly, negligently or unthinkingly? Yes. Is that who I want to be? No.

If there’s no Yiras HaRommimus in the relationship, it’s not going to lead to good things…

LU, you phrased your question clearly and with great care. No possibility to misconstrue to find any type of offense, tznius-wise or otherwise.

Unfortunately, I can’t help you here.

True, but if you think about what the question is asking, it may be a bit more personal than you realize and they are demonstrating tznius by refraining 🙂

Lilmod ulelamaid, I was extremely disturbed by something you wrote. I realize everyone here is just having fun and nobody knows (for the most part) who anyone is. Nobody with a drop of seichel or integrity is using the CR to pasken shailos or solve their hashkafic dilemmas.

Still, you write that you teach Halacha and Hashkafa, and then you drop a bombshell like that on us- I couldn’t let it pass.

You begin by quoting what a poseik told you, namely, “Hashem doesn’t want us to be depressed,” in a discussion about text messaging. Then you extrapolate from this statement what your Rav would say about eye shadow. And you don’t even have the good grace to express any doubt or hesitation. You “are positive he would tell you…”

    First of all:

You never ever try to draw comparisons and determine Halachic rulings from what a Rav tells you; not for yourself in different circumstances and definitely not for anybody else. The psak Halacha you received is to be regarded as binding for you in your present circumstances and that’s as far as it goes. If you are told the spoon is Kosher that does Not mean your neighbor’s spoon is also kosher. If you are expecting twins and are in your twenty-sixth week, and you receive instructions from your Rav as to how you should handle Tisha B’Av, you absolutely may not pass on this advice to your sister who is in exactly the same position.

It is far more than presumptuous of you to say that you are positive what your Rav would say about any Dvar Halacha. Hopefully your Rav is completely familiar with 4 Chelkei Shulchan Aruch and the full body of Torah literature that expounds upon it. He has watched and listened to his own Rabbayim. You cannot fathom the calculations that go into a seemingly simple psak. There is no way you can extrapolate from what he told you, what his opinion is on something else.

I know the subject is just a simple bit of eye shadow. But I could not ignore your statement. Especially in light of the fact that you state you are a mechanech or mechaneches.

    End rant.

Actually, Syag, somebody does see your hair.

And that’s the only person you really care about when it comes to looking nice.

Still no reason for shadchanim to make you feel ugly and degraded.

In this season of trying to be dan l’kaf z’chus, I guess maybe you could say they were trying to be helpful. But what they told you is so unhelpful and counterproductive that is borders on being brainless.

Everyone knows that besides all the other attributes too numerous to list, (some of which, justifiably, won’t make it past our vigilant Mods) what makes a person look most attractive is that feeling of self confidence that it seems the shadchanim you dealt with were doing their best to eradicate.

Lucky (I deduce from your posts) they were spectacularly unsuccessful in keeping you away from your zivug.

    Very enjoyable enlightening thread.

Lightbrite, your point is well taken, but your conclusion is flawed.

The only conclusion that logically follows your premise is that Yeshiva bochurim are retaining their inner spirituality and not letting the kedusha be drawn out to the impure world.

But my favorite post was from yeshivishe kup. Mr yehivishe kup, I think it’s just great that someone with your name would comment on punkt this thread. And as the bearer of that name, yours is the opinion that carries the most weight.

    Agree, Veltz.

That last question you guessed, is really your question.

Your opening question is for your brother, your sister-in-law and your niece.

In most cases you have to respect your family members and allow them to make their own mistakes. If there is indeed a sakanah involved to guf or nefesh (I’m not in a position to comment on that) then you may need to get involved; but you have to tread very carefully. Passing out unsolicited advice, as in suggesting a learning program in Sifrei Mussar, might not be your best option.
