Gut Voch lilmod ulela!
If you look at my post you’ll see I wrote, “”Would posters say…” – I meant All posters. “Have we become…” – I meant all of us.
Joseph happens to be a prolific poster who generally answers all questions directed to him (or not).
You”ll notice I commented that I don’t always have that experience as far as anyone else goes…
But- thanks for asking!
November 11, 2016 3:18 pm at 3:18 pm in reply to: Television: A Cry of Anguish and Appeal to Our Jewish Brethren 📺 #1193002golferParticipantHere is an old thread Joseph linked to on a different thread.
So we see from here that Joseph was around stirring up 5-page controversies (that’s FIVE pages! I consider myself lucky if I get a reply…) back in the Early Stone Age of the CR.
In all these years, has anything been accomplished? Would posters say they’ve learned something? Changed an opinion or two? Changed or improved outlook/ hashkafa?
Have we become better people? More accepting, open-minded people? Have our eyes been opened to things we wouldn’t have be aware of?
Or just a lot of venting (and a few recipes)? Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, by the way.
golferParticipantNoticed that, Joseph.
And the Dow started today at a record high.
golferParticipantI would like very much to agree with you Comlink, and to answer in one word-
Yes
But I’ve heard there are riots going on all over the USA, and I don’t want to start one here in the CR.
golferParticipantComlink, that sounds a lot like Malcolm Gladwell’s book, Blink.
Even when we think we know how we’re making decisions, our brains can outsmart us.
Which makes a lot of the carefully modulated ideas about how to choose the ideal spouse when we’re dating, go out the window when we’re actually on a date.
golferParticipantMarkets dropped day after Obama’s election too.
Markets often drop the day after pres election.
Tell your trust clients they don’t need to “go nuts”. Surely they have experienced market fluctuations before. And know that the purpose of hiring a good investment manager is to help get them safely through the market’s recurring ups and downs.
(Not that I’m running for position of CR investment analyst/ financial whiz or anything. I don’t drive a Jaguar. But I once saw one at the zoo.)
golferParticipantCT, surprised at you!
Your comments always seem wise and fair, even if I might not agree with your viewpoint.
But, as ubiq already told you, saying you can’t complain if you didn’t vote is utter nonsense, especially in the US.
In a parliamentary system you might have a point. With our electoral college system putting power over the military and the economy in the hands of one person who possibly did not even receive the majority of the votes of the electorate in his country- you are just plain wrong.
To misquote a famous person, the canard of every man’s vote counting is the opiate of the masses.
(For those who don’t quite get it, I’m not suggesting anybody with the legal right to vote should not vote. Vote, but do so with your eyes open.)
golferParticipantSounds like an amazing idea Ctrl Alt D!
Are you at all concerned about planning a trip that can be, like Meno says- a waste of a trip if it turns out to be a cloudy day?
Do you live so close to the area that it’s not a big deal?
Or are you an optimist counting on blue skies?
golferParticipantJoseph, No.
Perhaps you’d like to reread the post about It is Time’s Zeide.
It seems clear he was a Talmid Chacham, not a B–s fan.
(I’m sorry it took me so long to answer you. It’s hard to notice posts or get a word in edgewise around here with all the discussion of who insulted whom, and who’s losing their Cheilek Le’Oha”b, and all the rest of it…)
golferParticipantIt is TfT, that is my absolute favorite Harachaman. Even in my fatigued bleary eyed state by the time I get there, those words always manage to get me to sit up straight and make sure I’m enunciating carefully.
As for what we really do there-
– Does anyone else know the story of the ba’al ha’agala who will always be going downhill? What we do up there has a lot to do with what we’re occupying our time with and where our thoughts are while we’re spending time down here…
golferParticipantDisagree, akuperma.
What Avi K said still stands (Thank you Avi K). “Shloma shel malchus” is still of great benefit to us.
There is surely nothing wrong with putting in a good word for one’s employees when davening, first out of hakaras hatov, as we benefit from their service, and selfishly, as a request that we should be matzliach in getting the service we are paying for.
And I can’t speak for anyone else, but when I daven I’m not concerned with sounding unamerican. As long as I don’t sound unjewish, I think I’m okay.
golferParticipantI bet It is Time’s Zeide could have given some solid good answers to the OP’s question.
golferParticipantJoseph, was that a rhetorical question?
In case not- I guess you might give them some credit as Limud Torah but it’s a bit of a stretch, no?
And you have to admit- the vast majority of the threads are not discussions that fit the bill.
There is the occasional nice little vort on the Parsha or Halachic thread discussing real Halacha, so I’ll give you a weak- yes, could be.
November 6, 2016 7:44 pm at 7:44 pm in reply to: CONFUSED: Orthodox Jews MUST Vote Trump..And MUST Vote Hillary?! #1189326golferParticipantDo we want her in the White House next to Hillary?
Yidden, this is not the time to consider personal issues or government programs!
The only consideration must be Acheinu Kol Bais Yisroel.
The candidate to vote for, while this may be unpleasant to many, is clear.
If we have our priorities straight and our hearts straight we know what to do.
golferParticipantLittle Froggie- +1
No, on second thought, +1,000
Joseph- you’re kidding, right?
I’m going to be dan l’kaf adam normali and figure you said that in the spirit of LF’s comment to be malbin our sheenayim.
golferParticipantThank you adocs!
November 4, 2016 2:04 pm at 2:04 pm in reply to: A Different Way to Read Rashi (Parshas Noach) #1189070golferParticipantGut Shabbos SiDi!
And may we all make it through our own personal disasters with our Emunah intact!
golferParticipantWhen do people in chu”l start saying it this year?
November 4, 2016 12:49 am at 12:49 am in reply to: Pareve versions of dairy foods are not worth the calories. #1191028golferParticipantI was surprised too Neville C, at how upset iacis got with you.
Lately everyone around here takes everything so seriously…
I can see all the existential angst coming into play when deliberating, for example, women’s roles in Gan Eden and the like.
But lest any of us lose our solemnity for a moment when discussing, for instance, pareve ice cream… beware!
I for one did not take offense when you suggested you were staunchly opposed to pareve desserts. And I also did not consider the possibility that you were going to boycott or harass or attack (verbally or otherwise) those who might on occasion consume them.
(I’ve also heard non-FFB’s complain that they can’t get used to, of all things, gefilte fish! A food, I might add, that many FFB’s I know prefer to avoid.)
golferParticipantOr someone who is not Tiger Woods or Jack Nicklaus and…
One minute…
November 3, 2016 3:57 pm at 3:57 pm in reply to: Pareve versions of dairy foods are not worth the calories. #1191016golferParticipantPlease check labels; read ingredients and nutrition information.
Pareve versions of dairy foods are often very high in trans fats (aka hydrogenated oils). From a nutritional standpoint these foods are completely useless and extremely harmful.
But they taste good so does it really matter 🙂
golferParticipantTry to remain focused.
And try not to post on the CR too often.
November 2, 2016 11:44 pm at 11:44 pm in reply to: They should sell just the cookie part of the ice cream sandwich #1217670golferParticipantI’m with LU!
She’s absolutely right!
golferParticipantLU, you seem like a very caring kind person. But it doesn’t make much sense getting attached, or feeling as if you have a personal relationship with people you meet in the CR, or anywhere online.
I’m sure you realize that Sparkly could have been two bored yeshiva guys who have found something else to waste their time with… Or a similarly bored 9th grade girl having some fun and now moving on to other amusements… Or any number of possibilities.
golferParticipantTake the sentence, the chillen ruint the new sofa.
By,
Apushatayid
Just making sure nobody misses this 4 year old gem!
There was a girl on the CR flying to Los Vegas.
Unfortunately, looks like the Mods sent her away. She is gone.
Pity. Could’ve found a perfect match right here on this thread.
golferParticipantWikileaks is a constant reminder that some day all of our own personal classified files that we were so careful to hide out of sight will be opened up and studied.
Vai lanu de’oisa busha !
golferParticipantWhat really got to me wasn’t the apple throwing.
It was the guy climbing up on the Table!
And walking on it!
Right in front of his Rebbe!
Derech Eretz??!
golferParticipantNot trying to nitpick Meno, but I would say more like-
Dadada Vroom
Da da da da Dah
Dadada Vroom
Da da da dah da da
Seriously though, I’m always a little taken aback at the welcome we give the Chassan Kallah when they come to dance after the Chuppa and yichud (and pictures of course).
Would you, for example, have the band strike up this tune on Motzei Yom Kippur after an inspiring Ne’ilah?
(I have actually heard some beautiful niggunim sung joyously at that time. None of them sounded like they were stolen from a rock band, or heavy metal, or whatever category the talented members of Europe fall into.)
golferParticipantThank you, benign!
Appreciate the clarification.
golferParticipantLF, I don’t think there’s a pasuk anywhere with the words the OP used in his title. I think he was trying to quote the pasuk from Va’eschanan,
“V’Nishmartem me’od le’nafshoseichem…”
In the context of that pasuk, the words are not instructing to watch our physical bodies.
Can someone explain how we came to use these words to learn that we have to stay safe / stay healthy?
And can flatbusher tell us what he was quoting?
October 27, 2016 2:36 am at 2:36 am in reply to: How can a woman get schar for learning Torah? #1196056golferParticipantNashim b’mai zachyan?
The one piece of Torah learning every single Bais Yaakov graduate takes with her.
Your explanation, Joseph, while not precisely correct, and lacking some detail, is certainly on track.
golferParticipantOK, LU.
I stand corrected then.
I was curious why you were so offended by that long ago teacher that you can’t see your way to forgiving.
But I wasn’t there and realize I might just not get it…
golferParticipantLithuania
golferParticipantNon of yo b,
Shira yevanis, I’m guessing you’re asking about.
Probably not the best use of your time, your auditory nerves, and your thoughts.
Arguably not the worst either.
golferParticipantAm I the only one wondering how 2 people (LU and– me!) managed to take up so much space on a thread that technically has nothing to do with them?
I don’t actually show up in shul (on time or not) every morning.
And I don’t even daven with a minyan (most of the time).
I expect same goes for you, LU.
Apologies for taking over a thread from the ones who, rain or shine, snow or sleet or hail, never miss a morning, or evening. Even if they’re not always exactly on time, the credit is theirs.
golferParticipantLU, I’m getting a little confused trying to figure out what you’re saying.
Does one prioritize himself (or- oneself) ?
Sure, I put myself, and my own needs, on my list of priorities. I wouldn’t be breathing otherwise.
There are a lot of other people on the list of priorities most people have. The more the merrier, most would agree.
We all start with parents (though they don’t make it onto a list of priorities until we develop some cognizance and a sense of responsibility). That’s an important priority, as in Kibbud Av v’Eim. Siblings. Friends, some closer than others. Spouse- that’s a major one- ishto k’gufo, as another poster mentioned, and a wife has a major obligation to keep her spouse on that list as well. Your spouse’s parents may or may not be included in the Kibbus Av v’Eim obligation, but they’ll be somewhere on the list too. Then (Mazel Tov!) your children park themselves prominently on your list of priorities and make sure you don’t forget they’re there.
We all learn to do a complicated juggling act, without chas v’shalom dropping any of the balls. We weigh our own needs and those of all the other people on the list, and act accordingly. I prioritize my own needs, and won’t, for example, give up a few nights of sleep because I have a lonely friend who wants to stay on the phone with me until 3 am. Or because I’m baking cakes for my best friend’s vort. I will, however, give up many night’s sleep for a child who isn’t feeling well, or needs 1 and 4 am feedings.
Your husband’s Torah learning is a very important thing on that list. For you and for him! Between the two of you, you’ll figure out how to make sure he fits your needs as well as his learning into your daily lives. He doesn’t necessarily have to take care of one to the detriment of the other.
golferParticipantSo it was all pretty icing with no mammashus, CT?
Alma d’shikra !
As an attorney I’m sure you’ll agree that’s Emmes
golferParticipantYserbius, your 1st 2 sentences are priceless!
(Perhaps not totally befitting the first days after the Yamim Noraim, but giving a person such a good laugh must be a mitzvah- Milsa d’bedichasa… Maybe not one of the 613, but thanks anyway!)
golferParticipantSorry, Joseph, I’m not able to answer your questions.
I feel bad though that you opened such a worthy, timely thread and you’re being ignored.
That happens to be something I am able to help you with!
Change the title of your thread to any one of the following:
Shidduchim and Arba Minim
A Mehudar Esrog is a Segulah for Shidduchim
I Need Help Choosing a Seminary and an Esrog
PBA Buys an Esrog
PBA Changed his name because of a Stolen Lulav
Rabbanim Ban Esrogim and Lulavim from Chol HaMoed Concerts
Trump is giving away Esrogim for Free on 13th Avenue
I hope that was helpful!
golferParticipantWhat do feinschmeckers break their fast on?
What do they hang in their Sukkahs?
And most important what kind of aravos do they use to klapp on Hoshana”R?
golferParticipant+1 Lilmod U
+1 Gofish
Sincerely hoping your kind words are not lost on the person who needs to really hear them.
golferParticipantThat sounds so painful, babbler.
I could tell you all the stories about the power of mechilla & etc…
But I know from my own life’s experience that it’s really a hard parsha- for reasons you posted above, and others as well.
While my circumstances are very different from yours, I’ve struggled with this myself.
I didn’t pipe up here to offer you any brilliant advice.
Just to say- I hope things get better for you and that the coming year is filled with Shefa Brachos for you and your family!
golferParticipantInteresting.
Even though I never thought to ask –
– along the lines of: if this is what’s being done then this must be the way it’s supposed to be –
I’m joining everyone above waiting to see if someone has an answer.
golferParticipantLilmod U,
Feinsh’s wear pure silk, never polyester, no faux anything whatsoever, bespoke suits, handmade shoes, and have their garments shipped directly from Paris and Milan, never China.
Even when they go camping under the stars the butler huffs and puffs up the trail behind them shlepping their Frette linens and their Hungarian goose down comforters.

Sometimes the CR gets a little confusing like that…

golferParticipantMazel Tov oomis!
golferParticipantAgreed, babbler, nice!
But what’s even nicer, and astonishing (!) is that you found this 5 year old piece in time for 10 Yemei Teshuva!
golferParticipantThank you CH!
golferParticipantThank you so much for posting that, ilyae!
I will be sure to revisit and reread when I have more time to absorb…
Babbler, that’s a very tall order! I can’t imagine how Rav Kirzner’s words can be summarized. But I can assure you it’s very worthwhile to take the time to read through it.
I wonder if the mods would allow ilyae to post a link (if there is one) where the shiur can be heard.
