Comlink, yes, we got that, the Gaon is the source.

But I think what son may have wanted to ask you was–

For those of us not proficient in all the writings of the GRA, can you tell the mareh makom for what you’re quoting?

Please listen the wise voice of Syag.

You’re much too young to try being a mashpia, which may have the added consequence of leaving you friendless at a new yeshiva.

Wishing you hatzlacha, and hope you find a place that’s a good match for your talents and aspirations.

GrepsilB, since none of the kind members here were interested in my suggestion, there’s no way around this mess. The route you describe is a 10 minute walk and a 20-30 minute drive. (60 minute drive if you include the time it will take you to find parking.) Unless you feel some deep emotional attachment to your car, I suggest leaving it alone at home. You do the math and decide.

No question there are too many cars on the road around here. And it’s incredibly stressful just trying to get from point a to point b. What I suggest is that most (or dare I hope all?) of you stay off the road.

I am offering free coffee (this is after all the coffeeroom), free gefilte fish (a recent obsession here) or free chulnt (seems to be the current obsession here) to anyone interested in getting off the roads when I need to be on them.

Oomis, in spite of your beautifully written post, surely you must realize that Joseph’s very brief post above is so right!

Which committee will decide which women’s photos are permitted?

And when they decide – they’re going to hurt some feelings in a big way.

If I wake up one morning to find myself in a Very Important Mainstream Orthodox Publication, I’ll be horrified and go right back to hide under the covers. Permanently. As that can only mean that in addition to have (suddenly overnight) become a very Chashuva Rebbetzin, there is also no chance whatsoever (due to advanced age, advanced weight, or some other unpleasantness) that any man can find my appearance even a tiny bit agreeable.

Let’s just say Mammele would get it right for sure.

Unlike Mammele, I thought you were worried about the Leviasan…

And that would depend on whether it’s going to be used to make the world’s largest gefilte fish or the world’s largest sushi roll.

    Yes, yes Hakatan.

Also we don’t eat the gid hanasheh because the Zionists provoked the Sar of Eisav to fight with Yaakov Avinu.

Thay also persuaded Paroh to enslave us, Amalek to attack us, the Plishtim to engage us in battle, the Bavlim to destroy the Bais Hamikdash and the French to burn the Talmud.

Mimz, doing Teshuva is one of the 613 Mitzvos.

We do Teshuva for the same reason that we observe Shabbos, make a Pidyon Haben, eat Matzah on Pesach, and help the needy.

Student of Torah, to answer both of your questions:

    — The “koshi ha’shibud principle”. The terrible hunger made the 200 feel like 400.

    — The reason he didn’t eat for so long was because the thestrals ran out of blood and ate up all the chrein. Gryffindor only eats gefilte fish. But he couldn’t eat gefilte fish without chrein.

Zahavasd, the fact that you are not offended by improper behavior does not make it refined or decent.

My four year old grandson politely said, “That’s not yummy to me.”

But I heard echoes of, “Beheima asher lo tehora…”

    Joseph,

I believe your picture is in the dictionary next to the entry for:

    “dogmatic”

On the other hand, you have answered a question I’ve had for a while.

Someone once told me that b’Achris HaYamim, the whole world will have the status of Eretz Yisrael. Now supposing that were true, I still had figured out the little street in Yerushalayim where I wished I’d be allowed to live. (I’m sure that street will still exist in Yerushalayim HaBnuya, albeit perhaps with some slight shiputzim.)

And I wondered, who’s going to want to live in Australia, or Switzerland, or Costa Rica?

    Now I know…

in reply to: My daughter is in Sem in Israel and I'm scared for her #1111879

That is a rather large number:

    Seven hundred and thirty-seven.

Of course we need to know:

-How many Jews are there in the United States?

-What was the nature of the hate crimes? (I’m sure nobody will equate having a swastika painted on a garage door with being stabbed or shot.)

Main thing here is- statistical analyses are interesting, but let’s not lose sight of what’s important:

We need to daven for our children, for all Jewish children, and for Acheinu Kol Bais Yisrael, wherever they happen to be.

Zahavasd, I’m admitting that I’m not quite sure what you’re talking about, but your post has me confused. Someone is suggesting a hashgacha for MEDICAL marijuana? Why? Is there a hashgacha on medications taken for high blood pressure, diabetes, chronic pain, bacterial infections, seizures, hypothyroidism etc? If someone needs to take marijuana to help cure or manage an illness, does it need a hashgacha?

Using the plural form of ‘you’ is a form of respect. You will also hear the plural form of ‘you’ used by speakers of French (vous instead of tu), German, Yiddish, to denote respect to the one being addressed.

Cherrybim, those four little words – “is not worth it” – bother me.

You might be right about that, Horrified.

But me personally, I think RFDOS will figure prominently in the new serial Mishpacha is starting in their Sukkos issue, about Bayla Genendel, who has a daughter, Shira Bracha Leah, in shidduchim, who is afflicted with a severe case of RFDOS, and is trying desperately to hide this from the neighbors and the neighborhood shadchanim, while simultaneously dealing with her son, Baruch Ber, who was learning in a top Yeshivish Yeshiva but has been secretly going to the tish of the local very Chassidish Rebbe Friday nights and chapping shrayim (he’s addicted to the smell of the lokshen kugel), and her other son, Feivish Mendel, who is attending a top Yeshivish high school, and has been bullied since second grade by the local bully (the son of Bayla G’s second cousin) and as a result he’s started wearing a clip on his yarmulka and listening to CD’s that are not approved by Badatz, and her 5 year old triplets, Chynka, Chaya and Reva, who are disturbingly beginning to show early signs of RFDOS as well. Or are they just picking up the behavior from their older sister while their mother is on the phone with shadchanim?

The serial will end on or around Rosh Hashana 5717, at which time (we hope) crazybrit will have come up with a different syndrome that Mishpacha can use to occupy our hearts and minds.

    (Crazybrit, may I suggest- SMMPOSWTMCS?)

Yidesh_k, thanks for joining us and raising the median age (which sometimes seems to hover at around 16).

    As for your comment-

Yes, HKBH is of course able to change a person’e girth, height, wealth, and any other physical property, as you mention, in a flash.

However, for the most part, what you see is what you get.

The Frumguy was not suggesting that a wise person will pay most attention to the physical attributes of a prospective spouse, as opposed to to what is truly deep down. He merely stated that it seems to him that overweight is the new poverty. And he may in fact be correct.

Whether or not that proves that young people in shidduchim today are shallow, superficial, short-sighted and vapid, is up for discussion.

(Some of the more learned posters here, may shoot down that idea by quoting sources that date back many many years suggesting the advisability of a man choosing a wife that looks nice to him.)
