GoldilocksParticipant
I visited Disney World as an adult and loved Magic Kingdom, Animal Kingdom and Epcot.
Here’s my list of recommended attractions: It’s A Small World and Splash Mountain (Magic Kingdom), Mission Space and Soaring (Epcot) and the bird show (Animal Kingdom).
Take along a camera and be prepared to have an amazing time! (Oh, and if you’ll be riding Space Mountain, take care that your shaitel doesn’t go flying like mine did…)GoldilocksParticipantCheese blintzes can be made using corn starch or potato starch in place of flour (the rest of the recipe stays the same).
GoldilocksParticipantMaybe speak to someone who has actually been there and ask them what it’s like?
Rosh Hashana is serious; if you arrive at Uman and find that you don’t like it, there’s no “redo” option.GoldilocksParticipantI don’t have regular internet access so I can’t post here often.
To clarify: I’m not planning to drink a whole lot. But I’m by nature the type of person who can handle alcohol well, so I might feel fine and actually be fine, but still might get into legal trouble if I’m stopped for any reason while driving.January 9, 2018 3:23 pm at 3:23 pm in reply to: Why did Hashem create onions? Who needs it? 🌰🌰🥔🥔 #1446606GoldilocksParticipantOnions make me cry … a lot!
So I guess they were put into this world to teach me that even something that makes me cry can be wonderful and bring so much flavor into my life.GoldilocksParticipantJust curious – what would you say about a parent changing their baby’s diaper in public?
Would this be considered a greater or lesser offense than nursing in public?GoldilocksParticipantI watched the eclipse from the Chabad house in Columbia, South Carolina. There were some clouds that blocked the sun part of the time, but we still has a pretty good view of most of it. It was beautiful and a really nice experience.
The next total eclipse will be in the summer of 2019 and will be visible from Argentina and Chile – is anyone making travel plans yet?GoldilocksParticipantI don’t have a computer at home, and my life is too busy for me to visit the library as often as I would like. When I do visit the coffee room, the topics that interest me have usually been “done to death” already.
GoldilocksParticipantI’ve heard (I don’t remember the source) that the word “cancer” stems from idols. Apparently the disease cancer was named after a constellation which was named after an idol. That might be one reason why people don’t want to say it.
GoldilocksParticipantI’ve had leftover chulent right before a fast. It’s tasty and doesn’t cause any problems at all.
Really, unless you have specific health issues, you should be able to eat anything you please before a fast without any trouble.
Just make sure to drink enough (and maybe avoid coffee), and you should be finel
GoldilocksParticipantTry to find a small shul with not too many members.
Many introverts (like myself) find it easier to come to Shul just a bit early; at that point it’s almost empty, and you can adjust to the crowd gradually as people show up. Also, by the time the shul gets crowded you’ll already be absorbed in your davening and won’t notice the crowd as much.
GoldilocksParticipantRumor has it that sardines and herring are the same fish.
GoldilocksParticipantJohn Kerry is way more dangerous than air conditioners.
GoldilocksParticipantI’ve read Oz Vehadar Levushah, and I would highly recommend it. It’s well written, interesting and extremely informative.
GoldilocksParticipantI know someone who wears nail polish in very bright colors.
The truth is, it looks really pretty. So pretty, in fact, that when I walk into a room and she’s there, the first thing my eyes focus on is her bright-blue or bright-purple fingernails.
Say what you like about tznius……but is that really what you want? Do you want your fingernails to be the very first thing people notice when they see you?
May 1, 2016 6:40 pm at 6:40 pm in reply to: If you wondered if you were seeing me this Wednesday (Chol HaMoed)… #1150145GoldilocksParticipantProbably!
I was at the waterfalls in Paterson, New Jersey. There were lots of strange – looking people there! 🙂
GoldilocksParticipantWhy would it be problematic?
You may agree or disagree, but why would you have a problem with someone raising a good question?
The ArtScroll Women’s Siddur states that women should not make a mezuman, although they should answer Amen when men make one. Practically speaking, I don’t know many women who would answer amen to a mezuman; I also don’t know why not.
And as far as kiddush and havdala are concerned, why not? I have made kiddush and havdala many times and don’t really see a problem with it.
GoldilocksParticipantI went shopping late last night. I went to a shopping center that had both a supermarket and a pizza shop – the pizza shop had more customers than the grocery!
May 1, 2016 6:23 pm at 6:23 pm in reply to: guest for yom tov brings chametzdik cake, puts it on the table #1150053GoldilocksParticipantI don’t see why, when inviting guests, you cannot politely ask them not to bring any food along with them.
GoldilocksParticipantYou might be the next Dr. Seuss if you are willing to put the same kind of effort into your writing as he put into his.
Dr. Seuss wrote and illustrated over a hundred pages for every 20-page book that he published.
Even if you are a natural genius, producing lasting writing (or lasting anything) does not come easily.
GoldilocksParticipantA better question is why the rubik’s cube doesn’t have pink.
GoldilocksParticipantIndeed, there is too much traffic.
Someone had better stop construction!
If that is indeed what those people were doing on Maple Avenue, they have my blessing. I hope they succeed.
GoldilocksParticipantI’ve always pictured Haman’s hat as resembling George Washington’s hat (which also had three corners).
Does anyone have any other ideas?
GoldilocksParticipantI always wear one outfit the entire Shabbos. If it’s clean and I like it, why not?
However, if you are going away for Shabbos, it make sense to take a second outfit along in case your first one gets dirty.
January 11, 2016 7:27 pm at 7:27 pm in reply to: Who made the Purim story and where is he from? #1132441GoldilocksParticipantIf you want to know who made the story happen, the answer is Hashem.
If you want to know who wrote the story, I believe the answer is Mordechai.
And today is indeed Rosh Chodesh Shevat, but it’s okay; seforim of Tanach can be studied at any time, as long as it is not Nitul or Tisha B’av.
GoldilocksParticipantDid you ever consider Jill’s Ceramics in Nyack? If it’s not Chanuka or midwinter vacation, there shouldn’t be too many people from Monsey there, and it’s a really cool place.
Nyack also has a great park near the water with a long hiking trail…it’s beautiful!
GoldilocksParticipantMy favorite Jewish proverb,
“Tea and Tehillim will never hurt…but in order to help, they need to be warm.”
December 22, 2015 6:43 pm at 6:43 pm in reply to: VaYigash: 70? there are only 69 people listed! #1117929GoldilocksParticipantNow that is an interesting theory!
I always thought that Dina’s daughter was Osnat (who married Yosef).
Was I mistaken about that?
As to how Shimon could have married Dina: I once heard that Dina and Yosef were about the same age. Rachel was pregnant with Dina and Leah was pregnant with Yosef. During the pregnancy, Leah davened that her baby should be a girl, so Hashem made a “nes” and swiched the babies.
So Dina was partly Rachel’s daughter…therefore she was allowed to marry Shimon.
Did anyone else hear this?
GoldilocksParticipantthis week?
what is the outcome?
December 20, 2015 7:13 pm at 7:13 pm in reply to: The differences between Yeshivish and Chasidish marriages #1118182GoldilocksParticipant“…doesn’t the Gemora say that a woman would rather be married to a bad husband than to not be married?”
Keep in mind that at the time the Gemora was written, it was almost unheard of for a woman to hold down a job, or function in society in a meaningfull way if she was not married.
Things are a bit different nowadays.
GoldilocksParticipantthe snakes and scorpions were afraid of him….but the potential buyers weren’t????
December 6, 2015 7:38 pm at 7:38 pm in reply to: In Advent of Sunday Evening: the Lesson of Chanukkah #1115374GoldilocksParticipantAvi K, I don’t think there was such a thing as “Ashkenazim” back in those days…
GoldilocksParticipantJoseph, I have heard that there is a reason for bottled water to have a hechsher. Companies sometimes process the water on machinery that is also used to process milk.
November 15, 2015 6:47 pm at 6:47 pm in reply to: "What's your favorite color?" is bad chinuch #1114148GoldilocksParticipantMashiach Agent: Saying “cause” instead of “because” is terrible chinuch.
GoldilocksParticipantAfter last winter’s flopped blizzard, I’m finding it hard to take such warnings seriously.
And I’m very glad I left my sukka up for Shmini Atzeres!
GoldilocksParticipant$500 worth of chocolate!
GoldilocksParticipantWhy not?
GoldilocksParticipantYitzchak, I think you are missing the point of Simchas Torah. The idea of the yom tov is not dancing for the sake of dancing – it’s all about celebrating the Torah.
Dancing alone is pointless.
I like Simchas Torah, and I suspect that most Jews who like the Torah feel the same way.
GoldilocksParticipantHey, I daven nusach sefard – it’s not so bad! Give it a chance, you may come to love it.
By the way, your use of the word “viable” is gramatically questionable.
GoldilocksParticipantI have very positive feelings toward the people I work with, the people who live on my block, and the people who post here in the coffee room.
But those people are not my family.
I don’t have the same feeling toward them that I have towards the members of my own family.
I think that’s how most people view this matter.
GoldilocksParticipantScared driver delight – yes, that is indeed a strange custom. What do you think of that?
GoldilocksParticipantHaving faith in Hashem does not mean assuming that Hashem will do everything you want him to do. Hashem is not your servant!
Having faith in Hashem means telling yourself,”I don’t know what Hashem has in store for me, but I know that everthing Hashem does is good. It may not always be pleasant or easy, but it is good”.
Ideally, a person with perfect faith will never be nervous or anxious about the future. But people like that are very hard to find. The rest of us do get nervous sometimes….
GoldilocksParticipantSpeaking from a guest’s point of view – If I would ever find Advil in my welcome package, it would make me wonder if there’s something about the caterer that I don’t know about but should!
GoldilocksParticipantIt’s great that a rebbi raised money so that one of his students could go to camp. Maybe there were reasons why the rebbe felt that this student needed it.
BUT – The rebbi should have made sure to do it in such a way that NO ONE – not even the student himself – should have realized that the money was raised by the rebbi. Otherwise I’m sure other students would have felt bad about it. Especially the other kids who would have loved to go to camp but couldn’t.
September 4, 2015 4:32 pm at 4:32 pm in reply to: Professionally addressing Invitation Envelopes #1099063GoldilocksParticipantI helped my mother with the invitations when my brother got married.
We did it on the computer, which was a bit of a pain, since neither of us own one, and we had to go to a relative’s house to use hers.
After all the envelopes were printed and we were looking them over at home, we noticed that two of them had serious typing errors. My mother asked me to redo them.
I replied that it’s a waste of time to go back to the computer and pull up the program just for two envelopes. I said I could take a pen and do those by hand; it will take far less time.
My mother was concerned that people would be offended at receiving a hand writen envelope.
Dear Coffee Room Residents: If you would receive a wedding invitation, and the envelope was hand written: On a scale of one to ten, how offended would you be?
(just in case you’re wondering…no, I don’t bother my relatives every time I want to go to the coffee room. That is what libraries are for!)
GoldilocksParticipantYes, Trump is growing on me as well.
BUT – I think that anyone who commutes to work, or spends a significant amount of time driving on highways, should vote for Chis Christie.
You may not be able to afford the alternative….:)
GoldilocksParticipantThe issue with “Racko” is that a major part of the game involves finding cards in your “rack” that don’t fit into your sequence, and removing them. It involves the melacha of Borer (selecting), as you are removing the unwanted card from your rack.
GoldilocksParticipantHey…when did I get a subtitle?
Did anyone notice??
This is exciting! (and surprising!)
Well, it’s a really nice subtitle.
Who picked it out?
GoldilocksParticipantThere is much to wonder about. But I trust that Hashem will make everything work out.
GoldilocksParticipantAre people going to come back and be the same age as they were when they died?
If so, some people may have parents or grandparents that are much younger than them….
